In town for one night and decided to give this place a shot since it was right up the road from the hotel. I probably should have read more of the reviews on here before going. It was pretty slow from what i could tell. They have a pretty great beer selection which is nice. I ordered a Strip and baked potato with broccoli. The server came back pretty quickly to let me know they were out of the strip so i changed the order to a Filet, was in the mood for a steak. The food came out relatively quickly. The filet was much thinner than expected and cooked medium well to well done but I ordered it medium rare. The potato was hot on the outside but cold on the inside. I'm guessing they microwaved it? It was so under done the butter wouldn't melt. The broccoli was so over cooked and soggy it wasn't even worth another look. I'm not the type to complain but the server did notice i wasn't eating the steak and asked if it was cooked ok. I showed her and she immediately apologized and offered to have another one brought out. A little bit later the manager brought out the new steak and asked me to cut into it. It was very rare. At that point I'm assuming that someone in the kitchen is being a smart Alec and i have lost my appetite. I asked for my check and left. As i was leaving the manager followed me out and offered me a gift card. I don't live here so I declined but I appreciate the effort. The manager and server both seemed nice and eager to make it right. However the kitchen showed they are not capable of properly cooking a steak/potato/broccoli which should be pretty standard. If you go, check out the great beer selection and stick with food that is hard to screw up like pizza or something fried. read more

I have always been a fan of Barleys. The service has never been outstanding but the food is very good and consistently good quality. My favorite menu item is the buffalo chicken wrap but I have had many other things and they are all good. If you belong to their club you get 1/2 price apps Mon - Fri from 4-6 which is a great deal. Here's the down side. They have also been kind of expensive for what they are -- a bar and grill. I just went there Saturday night and they have a new menu which means $$$$$ My wrap used to be $8, now it is $10. $10 for a sandwich and fries is too much in my opinion. I'll continue to go there for the 1/2 price apps and boulevard wheat but probably won't be eating a full meal there. For our family of 4 with no beverages it was over $50 for bar food :-( Makes me sad. read more

I really want to love this place because it is so close to my house but there is always something that keeps me from giving the full five stars. Service: Not that great, they get slammed on the weekends and the servers we have had just don't seem to handle multi-tasking well. We waited about ten minutes to put our drinks in then another 20 to get them. They are however friendly. Food: KC Hopps does food well and Barley's is no exception but it is probably my east favorite of the Hopps restaurants. The quality is there but flavor is lacking. I had the Brick Chicken Sandwich with crispy Yukons. The sandwich needed more of the jam and maybe some caramelized onions. It was just a little lacking on flavor. The Yukons were crispy and delicious but a tiny portion. For me it was perfect, for the price should have been more. Their fries are amazing and so is the club sandwich. Children's menu is one of the best I have seen with lots of healthier options. We went with the grilled chicken sandwich, it is a small breast served on a slider bun. Choice of side, drink and ice cream. They were out of ice cream so they let her choose a mini dessert. Drink: I think this is more of a sit at the bar with apps and beer flights place because they have their drinks PERFECTED. Literally a book of beers broke down by type. And three different sizes for drafts. I had all 3 Octoberfest offerings and they were incredible. Misc: This is a go to if you want good beer and can't get a sitter. As I said above the kid menu is a great selection and price. The place is loud so they can be loud. They get crayons and a cute face mask. read more

We took my mom and step dad for Mother's Day and his birthday. The service was good and I could tell the server was frustrated. The buffet was never fully stocked the entire time we were there, except for the chicken bites. The pancakes were hard as a rock and never got refilled, they ran out of prime rib, cinnamon rolls, bacon and I think started serving steak. I got one biscuit with gravy, ran out of desserts and then they put out almost frozen blonde brownies and they were hard as a rock. Once the cookies came out they were raw and all melted together. It wasn't a great experience. I wouldn't go back for a Mother's Day brunch again. Not worth $33 a person. read more

Have you ever gone to the dentist where they take a mould of your teeth and thought, "y'know, I would like to find a culinary experience just like this"? Are you concerned that your spouse is a vampire? If you answered yes to both of these questions, then the Barley's Chicago Style Pizza with garlic selected as just one of your toppings can give you the dining experience you crave along with protection from being fed upon by a creature of the night for a mere $25 + tax and tip. I've always wanted to try a Chicago deep dish pizza, and I was excited to see they offered one at Barley's, so I ordered it through door dash. My toppings were Pepperoni, Italian Sausage, Mushrooms, Black Olives, Onions and Minced Garlic. I love garlic, and I'll put in what some people would call too much, but it's a seasoning, an enhancing flavor, not a theme. I got through part of one piece of the pie and it was too much, I put the rest in air tight containers to keep the smell locked in until trash day. Later in the evening I opened one and peeled back the layer of cheese, and unsurprisingly from what I had tasted earlier, I saw that the fresh minced garlic had been spread thickly across the entire layer. My wife came home from work several hours after I had eaten those few bites, brushed my teeth, and had something else for dinner and she could smell it as soon as I talked to her 5 feet away. My other complaint was the dough. As I alluded to in the beginning, it was not cooked through, it was almost like they somehow cooked the outer layer about 1mm thick, like searing a steak, and the rest was untouched by heat. Quite simply, it was gross as delivered to me. Without garlic and with a fully cooked crust I'm sure it would be good, but maybe a little underwhelming. read more

Very friendly and casual place . More draft beer options then you can count. Food is very good as well. Had the ribs one night, fish and chips the second night. Both were very good and reasonably priced. Service at the bar was very good. read more

Really enjoyed our meal here. I ordered the turkey burger. It comes with grilled onions and goat cheese. I had them add grilled mushrooms. The hamburger bun was homemade and delicious. A very, very good turkey burger option. We also tried the fungi and fromage flatbread. Super tasty. Service was friendly and relatively fast. They have a great selection of brews too. Nice atmosphere and vibe. read more

Great food and a massive selection of beer. Had a number of different apps and great wings. Three different beers from Stella to Mothers three blind mice to Firestone's walker union and they were all fresh. Service is a little spotty. Larger groups get more attention; singles as I was that night are a little invisible. Still a very good place and I'd come back. read more

Ok, this one is a challenge for me because I have been to this Barley's at least 30 times. I keep coming back so 5 stars for me, but not every visit has been 5-star worthy. That said, today's visit was totally 5-stars. The garage doors were up die to the perfect weather, there was a musician on the patio (he was great), our server was AMAZING and attentive (and hilarious), and the food was prepared perfectly. My family shared the giant pretzel for appetizer, it was wonderful. I had the fish and chips, which was perfectly portioned and prepared. My wife had the chicken tenders, also perfectly portioned and prepared. My oldest ordered the club sandwich with fries. This is a staple at Barley's, and the one dish you WANT to have leftovers. My youngest had corn dog bites, and she gobbled them right up (kid's menu). The beers were also cold and delicious. My only criticism is they need to bring back bone-in wings! I'd go more often if they brought it back. read more

We had a large group of friendly coworkers out for drinks and snacks. Friendly enough but got confusing when trying to order just for myself ( a lot was ordered for the table to share) A bit loud but that is to be expected for a good BrewHaus! I will have to come back to KC and try it on a smaller level. We all had a great time. read more

Love this place, mostly for the outdoor patio with fire, servers, and excellent dark beer selection. Had the 7 hour slow roasted pork once. Delicious. Sides are good too. I've been 5 or so times. Always been a good experience. read more

We've been here many times and always loved it until last night. Service was fine but the food was awful and prices have gone WAY up! French fries tasted like they had sugar on them and the only thing I could taste on the Hawaiian chicken bowl was salt. read more

Update July 2019: seriously, avoid this place, their service is garbage. Service has gone down hill, food is good but not great. They don't have enough beer menus to go around which is pretty dumb. Servers don't write down orders and forget to bring things. Go somewhere else read more

Ordered a Windy City Pie take out from Barley's in Shawnee. Not only was it nothing like a Chicago deep dish, it was one of the worst pizzas I've ever had. I was really hoping it would be at least close to the real thing. Soggy, thin pizza. The only thing 'deep' was the charred, flavorless crust. read more

Here for restaurant week. I have been here several times before. Never have I ever loved anything more than the Shrimp and Grits. I have been around to several restaurants for Restaurant Week this year, and this is the best thing I have tasted so far. The grilled shrimp are cooked perfectly. The coffee and chili rubbed bacon has an amazing deep flavor. It is chewy and melts in your mouth at the same time. Just wow. The grits are cooked perfectly (this is coming from a Southern Girl who is quite particular about her grits). They were creamy, the sauce was just rich and creamy and full of flavor. Hey Management::: if you are reading this, please please put this on your regular menu. Please. I may eat this 3, 4, or 5 Times a week. Well done. Everyone else..come try this divine dish!! read more

We were excited for our carry out order based on pictures on the website, but were disappointed with the half full plastic containers.

Overpriced. I'm sure the beer is all good but this is about the food. I've been here once before and had a burger and was disappointed. Tonight I got wings and a side of fries. They brought out 7 small wings. The menu says a pound of wings which I thought would be at least 10. The wings had little flavor and no spice at all. With a beer it was $24. What a waste for truly sub-par food for one. Fool me twice, shame on me. read more

My husband and I visited your establishment the other day while in from out of town and I wish we could've left with a more pleasant experience. We vastly enjoy your large selection of beers and your staff seemed very knowledgeable as we spoke both with your bartender and manager, who offered nice selections. However on two separate occasions one of your servers (wearing a grey beer sweatshirt) felt incredibly inclined to interrupt our conversation with your manager. We found this to be rude, disrespectful, and made us feel as if our time or interest wasn't of value. Sad to say we will not be revisiting your restaurant again. read more

Good food and service. I've been twice both for business meetings and had the private Wheat Room. We had a buffet of apps of chicken wings, meat tray, slider buns, hummus, veggies, all sorts of goodies that were delicious. The wait staff kept our water glasses full and were on hand to take dinner and drink orders. Large drink menu and decent lunch & dinner menus. I had the hamburger 1st time and the the 2nd time the smoked club. All the food was very good. read more

Barley's has been a fixture in the area for many years. I've been to many after work get togethers, as well as company parties. Good times! Since they've redefined and rebranded themselves though, I'm left a bit confused. It's like they're trying to be something they're not. The space itself is still nice with a good patio area. Service is standard as always, and the beer selection is as great as it ever was. I think it all boils down to the revamped menu and the finished product coming out of the kitchen. The menu just puzzles me. Micro plates, small plates, appetizers, etc. You're left wondering what the actual portion size is really going to be. The menu is also littered with buzzword ingredients. We opted to start with three of the micro plate options for 6 bucks. Sounds like a good deal, but 5 olives, some almonds, and one meatball doesn't quite meet the price point. The olives were really good, but the almonds were missing the garlic. The meatball itself was good (it's plural on the menu), but the polenta seemed nonexistent and the Parmesan fondue lacked any flavor. The smoked sharp cheddar ale soup was good. It has a little kick to it. The flavor reminded me of a spicy queso. The New England clam chowder wasn't quite as good. I'm not sure what was up with the color, and it had a more thinner consistency than I'm used to. It definitely needed salt, and after a dash, it did taste good. The seared tuna tataki salad was a hit. The tuna was perfect and the salad was dressed well and tasty. For the slow cooked pork Napoleon, I really liked the jalapeño corn bread, and the pork was cooked well, but lacked seasoning. The cherry pepper aioli was okay, but a bit tart to me. I was missing the menonita cheese flavor, and where were the beer battered fried poblanos? I wasn't expecting the IPA pickles to be finely diced on the plate either. Just put the pickle on the side. I'll be back of course, but I think the menu needs to be simplified, and they need to deliver on all of the items that are on it. read more

Do not get the fried chicken special. We ordered curbside and called and told them when we w be there. We were on time. We live 1 one from the restaurant. Got the food home and was very disappointed. The chicken was physically cool to the touch. The gravy was horrifically terrible. Expected chicken country gravy. It was a brown watery, corn starch odd tasting liquid. The mashed potatoes were as dry as the paper cup they put them in and not even warm. I had to put butter and milk in them and reheat them. Biscuits were hard, slaw was very dry. Salad had 2 quarter inch pieces of tomatoes n lettuce. Had to reheat the chicken. IT was supposed to be a chance for me not to cook all the time.....total fail. We have been going to KC Hopps location's for decades. The last few years just haven't been as good as the many years before that we have gone to their restaurants. read more

Great food, great music and great beer! We love barleys and hope to go back soon! Recently redid the ladies bathroom!

We just recently moved to the Shawnee area. We had gotten a flyer in the mail telling us Barley's weekly specials & happy hour items. We decided to go on Wednesday to try out their Prime Rib night! We were seated immediately & our server gave us the low down on all their beers on draft (which is a lot!!) The manager came over and told us that they are not doing the Prime Rib Special anymore because they are changing their menu, so this was a huge bummer. It was surprising to us that they would send out flyers with all their special items when they were getting ready to change them in a week. We had to decide what we wanted instead. For starters, we ordered the fried pickles. Huge mistake. I should have asked for extra pickles because it was all breading and hardly any pickle. They were also super greasy. For our dinner entrees, I ordered the fish and chips and my boyfriend ordered the buffalo chicken wrap with extra lettuce. My fish and chips were pretty decent. Not too battered. My boyfriends wrap had absolutely no lettuce in it which was a bummer but we didn't want to say anything. We liked Barleys for all the different beer they had on tap but thats about it. Seems like a cool place to come on a Friday night to listen to the live band and enjoy a few beers but I won't be ordering the fried pickles again. read more

This place has a fun atmosphere and endless beers on tap. Their fish & chips are great but the menu options leave something to be desired.

One word describes our experience there today horrible. Just to get a drink order was a chore. Hot tea water not hot. Coffee not hot. Waitress apologized that they did not have any clean teapots and she even asked us to pour the cream into our cup so she could refill it since there also were none clean. When our order was finally taken we questioned just what would come out of the kitchen. Did I mention there 6 of us with 3 of us there to celebrate our birthdays?! Out comes the cinnamon roll. Big but burnt on the top , a bit dry and just lukewarm. Then the food....mostly breakfast type but all cold. I had a chicken sandwich and fries. Yup, cold The ice tea drink never did show up. The birthday cheesecake was not the best showing of a dessert. We are usually a pretty laid back group but this was just plain and simply bad service with bad food. Regardless we tipped the 20% as the waitress certainly was trying her best against the odds of the kitchen and dishwasher. The place was not crowded for a Sunday lunch time. That should have been our first red flag. Trying to get a simple HOT cup of coffee and tea should have been our second. I have NO desire to ever go back again. Sorry. read more

This was my last "last chance" for Barley's. Every time I am duped into believing that the last bad experience was just a bad night. 7/10/18 - Temperatures in the high 90's all day, but at 5 p.m. the manager finally decides to turn the thermostat DOWN to 70 degrees. Really, was it set on 80 degrees before then? It was so hot in there that when I asked if the air was on, the managers response was, "You think you're hot? How about me, I am working in this heat. Just so you know, I just turned the A/C down to 70 degrees". As if I were being unreasonable asking that question. This was after sitting at our table for 10 minutes without so much as water, or anyone asking if we would like something to drink. The heat and water situation aside, my last chances have always been about food quality. Every time I think it was just a bad night, next time will be different. Nope. Half your plate is always cold, and the other half is always overcooked, to the point of being scorched. So sadly, even though the atmosphere is awesome, and the beer selection is vast, I have to give up on Barley's. read more

I visited Barley's after work recently with some friends. I wanted to give it a good review. But there were a few problem. I joined our group late and was told later by my friends that the waitress was training, so I understand it's not going to be perfect, but didn't see who was training her and there were definitely a few problems with service. Our waitress seems very sweet, but a little overwhelmed. I love that they have specials, we went one $5 burger Thursday. I got the classic burger with onion rings. The waitress forgot to ask how we liked our burgers, which meant well done I guess. My burger was pretty dry, I normally do my burger more medium. We had to ask for all the condiments, which we got pretty quick. There was lots of confusion who ordered what and we all hard to switch the plates around. The onion rings were good, but not a lot of them. I felt like we were putting our waitress out when we would ask for more drinks. Also felt a bit rushed to finish when we were still enjoying out meal and visit when the waitress came and asked how we wanted to pay. It's a good location, and I did enjoy that they had a patio. There was a lot of alcohol to choose from. I was just a bit disappointed. read more

Barley's was one of the first places I was recommended to when I moved back to KC many moons ago. I'm long overdue for writing a review as they have always been one of my go-to Al Fresco dining places in the spring and summer and a favorite meet up with friends to sip on adult cocktails places. Last night didn't disappoint! I was meeting a friend there to let her try LipSense and have a few cocktails and catch up. On my way in two men (can't call them gentlemen because that is a big stretch of the truth) were on their way out and didn't bother holding the door, at all - and I was carrying a lot of stuff. Of course I said my choice words as I walked inside and found my friend and we sat down. A young man that worked there came over and I thought he might have been our server, but he wasn't. He was on his way in to work when he saw what happened with the door and just came over to make sure I was okay. WOW! Matthew - you're a true gentleman, and that act of kindness will keep me coming back! Now - that wasn't the only great thing! While they didn't have any of the vodka's that I prefer, they have a huge selection of craft beer. Our server, Noah, was awesome! I told him that I liked hoppy IPA's and asked him to choose one for me. The one he chose happened to have a free beer glass that went along with it. Bonus! We ordered the pretzels as I hadn't had them before and I just needed something light because I had dinner waiting for me at home. They came out toasty hot and fresh and OMG delicious! Will definitely order these again! As always the service was great, everyone was friendly, food was good and I will definitely be back. But most of all, a big kudos to Matthew who didn't have to come over and make sure I was ok, but was a true gentleman. read more

Sub-par food with a good tap list. However there are obviously non-beer folks writing the beer menu. Apparently New Belgium is a type of beer (???). If you are into beer then this place has to be at the top of your list. I believe they have over 75 beers on tap. And many hard to find beer in bottle. The food is as good as the day the first Barley's opened. I regularly eat and love the strawberry pecan salad and the Don Corleone Pizza. (which has a very thin crust very much like the crusts you find in Europe). Normally I do not love these thin crust pizzas, but every once in awhile a place makes it work. And Barley's does that with that dish even still 15 years later. The service at this location has always been attentive and knowledgeable about the food and the beer. They are quick correct problems and adapt to your needs. This place is my neighborhood bar and I really feel lucky to have such easy access to this place all these years. read more
