Barley's is tucked away on the western loop but is easy to find and easy to enjoy. A robust beer on-tap selection (with rotations and frequent vendor tappings) with an airy bar area coupled with a solid menu makes Barley's a very viable choice. The menu has familiar appetizer options but the portions are meal-sized. Burgers and sandwiches dot the menu and offer probably a dozen options. The wings, albeit limited in flavor choices, are well-prepared and pair nicely with a draft brew. Pro tip: try the 'ranch' dressing that accompanies the wings. I normally don't need sauces for wings, but that sauce is just really good for dipping anything. For lighter selections, the turkey burger was flavorful and snuggled in nicely on a brioche bun Prices are pretty standard, maybe a touch higher than a bar & grill, but the fare delivers. The dining area is a bit dim, or maybe that's just how it appeared, but it's still a nice place. A group of girls met at Barleys for corned beef and cabbage. All was undercooked and tough to eat. We said that to the waiter and he didn't seem to care. Asked for the manager and we think another server was sent to us. Not totally sure. Only thing ok about the $20 meal was the potatoes and mustard sauce. I worked at a hospital the next day and they served an incredible corned beef for $6.99. When we said something to the "Barley's manager" they took off 10% off something that was inedible. read more

Two stars here for pleasant service and extensive beer list. But, not sure there's much else to celebrate. Place seems to be trying to be upscale beer bar and grill. Upscale pricing, but rest of the experience left something to be desired. TVs all over the place with sports, but despite multiple live playoff games in progress, only one of nearly a dozen had a live game, like they turned them on at lunch to NFL and Golf Channel and never thought about them again. Requested a channel, never happened. Beer menu (via QR code) had no prices with anything, left you guessing before an order. Food menu has sandwiches a la carte at $10-$15 without a side. Added a $4 side of grilled zucchini to one order and it had like 8 pieces, which for the price was insane (on its own plate, it also looked small). Had it been included with the entree even at a higher price we probably wouldn't have noticed, but when you price everything separately, you expect the portion to match the expense. And, honestly be a quality that is special. An entree salad came out with different ingredients than listed on the menu, only to be told by staff that it was now prepared a new way. Other items that friends had come for were no longer on the menu. Things change, just not sure they are changing for the better here. All in all, the food was not terrible, just not up to upscale standard. Beer selection is indeed impressive. But, feel like there has to be something else in the area that can be worth this expense and be memorable for more positive reasons. read more

A small group of us had dinner on a Tuesday night--different entrees--and everyone was impressed by their meals. However, they weren't without some miscues and surprises. A pork chop was prepared differently than described and the server acknowledged that before the diner noticed. A steak arrived cooked past the requested medium. Again, the server noticed, apologized, and offered a redo. Asparagus was the skinniest we'd ever seen so several had to be taken together to get the full grilled flavor. Overall, these were small things to us and mattered little. Our salads and main dishes arrived in reasonable time, and the service was very good. We came to Barley's because of an advertised Crane brewing company happy hour. Being a huge fan of Crane & trying new places it seemed like a win-win! My husband and I started with the fried cheese curds and ordered some crane brews. Bizarrely the beers in the flight ended up being full price- not much of a happy hour. This was disappointing since it was the reason we decided to go to Barleys. The beef-fat fries that came with my husbands burger were yummy. I ordered their house made sausage which was good but the sauce it came with was just honey and brown mustard, seemed pretty plain. This is a really good place to come eat. Atmosphere is a bit loud, but it's a Brewery like atmosphere! So no complaints. Food was really good, I just had the best fried pickles over ever had (and Ive fried a LOT). They make homemade sausage, and it was really good as well. It was a really busy time when I was in here and I sat at the Bar. The bartendress Katie took care of me and she was in super high speed mode with so much going on. But I didn't go dry and she made sure I still had all the attention I needed. Great service from Katie. Props. I have no complaints at all about this place, not sure why only 3.5 . Barley's off of Midland was mediocre in my opinion. We went with a rather large group and they stuck us in a tight corner with benches and a wooden table. The waiter took forever to come to our table and the food took long as well. I remember not enjoying what I ordered. If I remember correctly, they have a veggie burger, and compared to some that I've had, it just didn't stand up. I like the location and the interior is nice and clean. We ate here for Restaurant Week because the menu options sounded good. Everything was disappointing. My app was the meatballs in parmesan fondue. Predominant taste of meatballs was salt and the cheese sauce tasted like glue. My entree was the thai chicken salad. The "peanut sauce" dressing was tasteless and there was way too much of it. My husband had the coconut shrimp appetizer. the shrimp was good but there were only TWO. He had the thai chicken pizza as an entree and it was also tasteless. Crust was reminiscent of cardboard. Our lunch was delicious! I was very very surprised at how delicious our food was because it has been a very very long time since I ate here. The schnitzel pork chop sandwich was HUGE! The pasta with salmon was nice and light and not to heavy on the stomach. You can opt to eat outside but it's way too hot out to eat hot food outside personally. My cider beer was so delicious it was so hard to remember that there was alcohol in it, but they have a HUGE menu for beer, mixed drinks and wine so you can't go wrong there either. read more

Patio in decent weather, pull up a chair to the fire, beer or wine in hand and your set for a good evening at Barleys. The food is franchisey, little to no flavor but salted heavily and half of it comes out hot the other cold. If you find your self here and hungry I would go with the turkey burger. Juicy turkey, grilled onion, suppose to come with goat cheese, but that wasn't what I tasted but still ok. Pickle, lettuce, and tomato it came with were fresh and crisp. For a $1 I upgraded to sweet potato fries that were cold and a nuked like texture. Steer clear of the fishy grilled trout, fishy is all that is tasted, and the green beans were cold. Service started out strong and than disapered, the other waitstaff were awesome, bringing us our food, refilling drinks and locating our waiter who showed up to pick up the check. read more

The beer selection is fantastic - if you can find something in the menu that is actually on tap. Between 4 adults, we asked about 4-5 beers before finding one that was actually available. The Three Blind Mice brown ale was delicious! I ordered the Napa salad (-blue cheese!) and added salmon. My husband ordered a buffalo chicken wrap, grilled, which came fried. The odd thing was that the meals came out of the kitchen one at a time. Kids meals first, which I can be agreeable with, but as the adult meals came out one at a time it was a little weird. Saturday night, fairly busy, short-staffed. Reservations recommended to get a timely table. Details: I ordered a BLT, my wife had the veggie sandwich, we split an order of truffle Parmesan fries, and our daughter ordered the pasta with salmon. I also had a Sierra Nevada pale ale. Very good beer selection. The sandwiches and fries were excellent. On the flip side, the salmon was a little dry and the pasta was fair at best. Service was very spotty. Food took awhile to get to us, which was probably due to how busy it was. We waited and waited and waited for our server to return to get our bill and a couple of take home boxes. You know, so we could leave? The young man who came to pick up my dirty dishes was no help. I finally found the manager and a minute or 2 later we had success. Turns out they were short staffed and had our server working different sections that were worlds apart in the restaurant. We've frequented this and other locations of Barley's in the years we've lived in the KC area...mostly the OP location, but ever since moving to Lenexa, we've visited the Shawnee spot more frequently. Their beer selection is usually pretty good; lots of varieties on style and price. They can usually be counted on to have a good selection of sour ales (our favorite style) which is a HUGE draw for us. As with other KC Hopps restaurants, they refresh their menu every so often, but you'll find the standard burgers and pizza here. Great happy hour specials (half price appetizers) and enough elevated bar food to keep it interesting. On this particular visit, we stopped by after a day at the KC RenFest for what I'd hoped would be a quick dinner. Unfortunately, I apparently chose the one entree that takes the longest, and our wait was WAY longer than I was expecting. That being said, when it finally came, it was still pretty good. I had the 7 hour slow roasted pork, and it was terrific...but it seemed to take 7 hours from the time we ordered it! If I'd known it was going to slow down our whole table, I'd have ordered the fish & chips. After several apologies from our server, we finally dug in to dinner. Overall, we did enjoy it, and I'm hopeful that the slow service was a glitch in an otherwise good experience. read more

We came in as a party of 11 on a Saturday night. Our waitress, Veronica was amazing. Everything was perfect. We all loved the food. I especially enjoyed the ale soup, which has a little spice to it. They sang 3 generations of Rock N Roll - everyone appeared to really be enjoying themselves, and I know I and my party really had a great time! The band name was Velvet Stinger. Valentine's dinner for two was not the greatest last night. We ordered one of each appetizer (gnocchi and cauliflower soup), and for entrees we ordered the pan seared chicken with risotto and flank steak with sautéed grapes. The appetizers came out with the entrees, so by the time we got to the entrees they were cold. I will say the gnocchi was amazing, but less could be said about the undercooked risotto to which mostly went uneaten as it was far too aldente. The chocolate lava cake was good, but it looked like half of it was not served and left in the pan, it was tiny and deflated. Really disappointing experience in a night of celebration. read more

We took my mom and step dad for Mother's Day and his birthday. The service was good and I could tell the server was frustrated. The buffet was never fully stocked the entire time we were there, except for the chicken bites. The pancakes were hard as a rock and never got refilled, they ran out of prime rib, cinnamon rolls, bacon and I think started serving steak. I got one biscuit with gravy, ran out of desserts and then they put out almost frozen blonde brownies and they were hard as a rock. Once the cookies came out they were raw and all melted together. It wasn't a great experience. I wouldn't go back for a Mother's Day brunch again. Not worth $33 a person. read more

In town for one night and decided to give this place a shot since it was right up the road from the hotel. I probably should have read more of the reviews on here before going. It was pretty slow from what i could tell. They have a pretty great beer selection which is nice. I ordered a Strip and baked potato with broccoli. The server came back pretty quickly to let me know they were out of the strip so i changed the order to a Filet, was in the mood for a steak. The food came out relatively quickly. The filet was much thinner than expected and cooked medium well to well done but I ordered it medium rare. The potato was hot on the outside but cold on the inside. I'm guessing they microwaved it? It was so under done the butter wouldn't melt. The broccoli was so over cooked and soggy it wasn't even worth another look. I'm not the type to complain but the server did notice i wasn't eating the steak and asked if it was cooked ok. I showed her and she immediately apologized and offered to have another one brought out. A little bit later the manager brought out the new steak and asked me to cut into it. It was very rare. At that point I'm assuming that someone in the kitchen is being a smart Alec and i have lost my appetite. I asked for my check and left. As i was leaving the manager followed me out and offered me a gift card. I don't live here so I declined but I appreciate the effort. The manager and server both seemed nice and eager to make it right. However the kitchen showed they are not capable of properly cooking a steak/potato/broccoli which should be pretty standard. If you go, check out the great beer selection and stick with food that is hard to screw up like pizza or something fried. read more

Ok, this one is a challenge for me because I have been to this Barley's at least 30 times. I keep coming back so 5 stars for me, but not every visit has been 5-star worthy. That said, today's visit was totally 5-stars. The garage doors were up die to the perfect weather, there was a musician on the patio (he was great), our server was AMAZING and attentive (and hilarious), and the food was prepared perfectly. My family shared the giant pretzel for appetizer, it was wonderful. I had the fish and chips, which was perfectly portioned and prepared. My wife had the chicken tenders, also perfectly portioned and prepared. My oldest ordered the club sandwich with fries. This is a staple at Barley's, and the one dish you WANT to have leftovers. My youngest had corn dog bites, and she gobbled them right up (kid's menu). The beers were also cold and delicious. My only criticism is they need to bring back bone-in wings! I'd go more often if they brought it back. read more

I really want to love this place because it is so close to my house but there is always something that keeps me from giving the full five stars. Service: Not that great, they get slammed on the weekends and the servers we have had just don't seem to handle multi-tasking well. We waited about ten minutes to put our drinks in then another 20 to get them. They are however friendly. Food: KC Hopps does food well and Barley's is no exception but it is probably my east favorite of the Hopps restaurants. The quality is there but flavor is lacking. I had the Brick Chicken Sandwich with crispy Yukons. The sandwich needed more of the jam and maybe some caramelized onions. It was just a little lacking on flavor. The Yukons were crispy and delicious but a tiny portion. For me it was perfect, for the price should have been more. Their fries are amazing and so is the club sandwich. Children's menu is one of the best I have seen with lots of healthier options. We went with the grilled chicken sandwich, it is a small breast served on a slider bun. Choice of side, drink and ice cream. They were out of ice cream so they let her choose a mini dessert. Drink: I think this is more of a sit at the bar with apps and beer flights place because they have their drinks PERFECTED. Literally a book of beers broke down by type. And three different sizes for drafts. I had all 3 Octoberfest offerings and they were incredible. Misc: This is a go to if you want good beer and can't get a sitter. As I said above the kid menu is a great selection and price. The place is loud so they can be loud. They get crayons and a cute face mask. read more

Have you ever gone to the dentist where they take a mould of your teeth and thought, "y'know, I would like to find a culinary experience just like this"? Are you concerned that your spouse is a vampire? If you answered yes to both of these questions, then the Barley's Chicago Style Pizza with garlic selected as just one of your toppings can give you the dining experience you crave along with protection from being fed upon by a creature of the night for a mere $25 + tax and tip. I've always wanted to try a Chicago deep dish pizza, and I was excited to see they offered one at Barley's, so I ordered it through door dash. My toppings were Pepperoni, Italian Sausage, Mushrooms, Black Olives, Onions and Minced Garlic. I love garlic, and I'll put in what some people would call too much, but it's a seasoning, an enhancing flavor, not a theme. I got through part of one piece of the pie and it was too much, I put the rest in air tight containers to keep the smell locked in until trash day. Later in the evening I opened one and peeled back the layer of cheese, and unsurprisingly from what I had tasted earlier, I saw that the fresh minced garlic had been spread thickly across the entire layer. My wife came home from work several hours after I had eaten those few bites, brushed my teeth, and had something else for dinner and she could smell it as soon as I talked to her 5 feet away. My other complaint was the dough. As I alluded to in the beginning, it was not cooked through, it was almost like they somehow cooked the outer layer about 1mm thick, like searing a steak, and the rest was untouched by heat. Quite simply, it was gross as delivered to me. Without garlic and with a fully cooked crust I'm sure it would be good, but maybe a little underwhelming. read more
