THE SCOTT CALVIN COCOA CAKE ROLL
Michelle M.

We stopped in here to see a band and having never been before, had no idea what to expect. It is really big and rustic, when we were there it was decorated for Christmas and they went alllllllll out! They have a huge selection of beers and a few ciders on tap. We didn't have a reservation so we had to stand around for about 45 minutes, but they did get us seated on what the server said was the busiest night she had ever seen (Thanksgiving Eve). We shared a burger and a piece of their chocolate cake, it was all delicious. The service was really slow but, they were slammed and it was extra crazy with the band playing. We will definitely go back!

Went to Barley's for dinner on Friday night and had an amazing experience from start to finish. We were seated right away, even on a busy night, and there was live music that created a fun, lively atmosphere. We ordered the made-to-order cream cheese pizza, and it was hands down the best pizza ever. The service is what truly made the night unforgettable. Melanie was absolutely incredible--the BEST server. She was friendly, attentive, and checked on us just the right amount. She had such a positive attitude, knew the menu well, and made us feel genuinely welcomed and taken care of. You can tell she really loves what she does, and it made the whole experience so much better. We'll definitely be back, and we'll be asking for Melanie!

Came for the fish and chips. They have live music on Saturdays. Service is always great. We have come here lot... for the fish and chips.

Came here for KC Restaurant week after seeing this delicious food on their Facebook! It did NOT disappoint and was full of flavor. I liked how open the restaurant was and the screens with different sports. Our waitress was super on top of our meal too. I will definitely be back!

I'm going to start this off with off with I was there right before a musical group was going to perform that I knew draws a large crowd. So some of this review may not be a typical experience. If you come in and are expecting a table to eat or sit out PLEASE check in at the hostess stand!!! I had gotten seated at a table and was waiting on the rest of my party to show up. I had RUDE guest try and get me to move so that they could sit together as a large party, steal my chairs because I was by myself at the time. However the Staff was AMAZING!!! Our Waitress Bri (not sure is spelled correctly) and the manager handled all the rude customers like champs and were on top of it all night long!! Bri checked up on our table better that I have had an most places when they weren't busy, we almost never had to wait on a drink or food or anything and when we did it was a very short wait. I got the Cheddar soup as and App while I was waiting on everyone, It was a good size portion and had really good flavor. For my main I got the Fish and chips and my friend got the Bourbon Glazed Salmon. All food came out amazingly quick and were large portions. The fish and chips looked like I have two full size fish. I didn't try the Salmon but it looked really good as well. Drink wise they have a handful of signature cocktails and a full list of Spirits. If I remember correctly they had 99 beer options. Yes that is a lot but they have not only beer folders for the table for you to look at but also the TV displays that scroll the beer options. Again even with a crowd we had very little wait for beers. The staff did an amazing job!!

Potato skins

$16 for such small potato skins was surprising. Delicious hot chocolate and flavorful fries Service was fine and staff were polite

We came in with a larger group. We did make a reservation well in advance so they knew we were coming. The service was slow at best. The food was great. I got a mushroom swiss burger and it was delicious. Cooked well and the fries were great too! Great food, decent service.

I have been here before and since I was in town my friends brought me here. The place is huge and well thought out. It's a beer house type of place. The food is good and tasty although today the server forgot to bring my friends soup out until the dinner and it was not hot. My BLT was real good (I added avocado) but today the bacon was super salty. Still, I will go back cause this was the 1st time that happened. The server, although distracted was still a very nice gal.

We were in town for a hockey tournament and our team manager gathered all the players and parents for an after game late lunch at Barley's.. It was literally walking distance from the hotel that we were staying so it's very easy to access. We entered the place and we were immediately directed to a large area. The ambiance inside is really nice, the feel of real sports bar can easily be distinguished. The server was very knowledgeable and catered to all our needs, apparently they are very well versed with a hockey team coming in for a big group dining. our server was very nice and very organized, he is the only one who handled everybody's order. We were 30 at a minimum so that was very impressive. Our order came in and it was served still hot, which is nice. The cheese curds with the dip is so god. I can't remember the last time I've had a fried cheese curds but these were really good. I asked for a list of their draft beers and the server said there are over 90, but suggested Yuengling.. so I got one and it's still very cold when served, felt like the glass was in a freezer. I ordered just the spicy chicken wrap and it's ok, nothing too special about it.. I like wraps because it's easy and clean to eat, nothing dripping like sandwiches or burgers. My wife ordered the Cuban sandwich and she liked the taste and the serving was really big, she can't finish all of 'em. My youngest ordered the alfredo pasta, and he liked it.. but was too sleepy to finish so we boxed it and ate it at dinner. The stay was nice overall and it was an easy 20% tip for our server for doing such a good job of keeping up with all of us who dined in.

Great service and there are vegan options with modifications. The veggie patty is vegetarian, NOT vegan. However, the salads are fantastic option and you can add avocado or additional vegetables for a small up charge. You can also get the bean deal and remove the cheese! We have someone in our party who is a huge club sandwich fan, they did claim their club sandwich is one of the best in the KC area. However, ask for it not toasted. Great place for live music and the staff is very accommodating.

Strawberry Limeade cocktail- so good!

Had a great night with friends, listening to The Stolen Winnebagos, & having drinks. Aaron, our server, warmed up to our large group and we had a lot of fun with him. Food & drinks were good but crazy expensive. For us this isn't a place we'd be able to afford very often but will definitely go to whenever the Stolen Winnebagos are there, even if the place is packed!

We went to Barley's on a Friday night and it was fairly busy. We got sat down with no wait or reservation quickly. We waited around 10 minutes before we got our waters/when our waiter approached us. We ordered an appetizer and never received it and the waiter realized she never put the appetizer in. It's a simple mistake and can be due to technology but we were a bit disappointed with those two events. I got the Spicy chicken sandwich which is my usual go to due to how amazing the sauce is! It's a sweet and spicy chili sauce and I always ask for extra sauce to drench the sandwich in. The fries were cooked perfectly! The alfredo pasta was a bit bland as it didn't have much seasoning. Overall, the food was mediocre and the service was the same.

Wanted to step out on faith and try a new Restaurant for Restaurant Week 24. Came early and sat at the bar for happy hour. (3:00-6:00pm). Our dinner reservations was at 6:15pm and we sat at a booth. The service was quick and professional. The ambiance was great. The food was great, our order consisted of Tank 7 Chicken and Chicken & Shrimp w Rice. The dessert was Mango Cheesecake and Brownie.

They have some pretty interesting beers on tap - we tried one with gin and a bunch of strange botanicals and while we probably wouldn't order it again we do appreciate the artistry and intrigue of something we've never conceived of tasting before! They truly do live up to their experimental Lab name! The sweet and salty pretzel bites were outta this world! They also were 'blowing the taps' which meant we get to try many of the beers that they were saying good-bye to. So, a little story. I was one of the first to wander into a place called Brew Lab years ago. I actually found the place because of looking for brewing supplies. There were a good amount of tools here but also these folks were serving their beer! So, what a great idea. I bought some grain... and had a few beers! I visited this place a few more times on the regular. Suddenly one day there was appetizers. And had the most divine pretzel bites that have ever existed. Next time was an amazing club sandwiches. And some pulled pork. All of the food has always been great bar food. And then there was the beer. So many delicious beers each time. Too many to try at once. But, that is all memory lane... Now... here is the news! Brew Lab is changing. The ownership remains the same however they have given up the brewing. They will have a few of their specialty beers that they keep on tap but they will have a lot more taps of beer from other breweries. On this visit they brought out a large amount of samples of the food that they will be adding/altering in the menu going forward. There were a lot of really delicious items and I am excited for when they have the full menu and I can order some of them. Most notably I am excited for the Catfish Po'boy sandwich. We will be back soon to try the all new... Tall Boys. Look for that review coming soonish!

She came back and took our drink orders and was back in a short time to take our food orders. Mom went with the Cuban sandwich and cole slaw. I had the Patty Melt with curly fries. There were a few tables that mostly already had their food, so it didn't take long for ours to arrive. Mom's Cuban was not really a Cuban sandwich. It might have had a few ingredients that you'd see on a Cuban, but it was not a Cuban. It was certainly edible, but needs a new name to avoid confusing expectations and reality. I had a small taste of the red pepper aoli on the sandwich and I liked it; she wasn't a big fan of the sauce. She liked the cole slaw, but it did have a different "flair" to it that I can't exactly pin point. I'm not a fan of celery seeds, so my tiny taste of it won't count. My curly fries were typical out-of-the-freezer fries. I'm not surprised, but they seemed to be the bottom of the bag with mostly tiny pieces. They had been overcooked a tad, which I appreciate them not being soggy, but they were just a tiny bit overly crunchy (likely because of them being tiny pieces), so they were a bit dry and could have used salt. Our table didn't have salt, I'm sure I could have requested salt since I did see some at another table. I made do with the ketchup. My sandwich was good. My preference would have been for the bread to have been toasted/grilled. It maybe had been grilled a bit, but not in a crispy way I'm used to for a patty melt. The burger was tasty and the grilled onions and mushrooms were really good. The dining room has high top tables at the entrance, then low top tables and booths if you go down a few steps to another area. They do have a door that is at street level to the lower dining area for guests who have difficulty with stairs. We don't end up in Shawnee for meals very often these days, but we appreciated the good service. The food was not bad; there are things we'd order differently, but it certainly was edible and not of poor quality.

But you're coming for the beer, and the beer is really great. Limitless has gone from a location in a light office park to its own standalone building, complete with patio and plenty of space. There are generally half a dozen or more of their own craft brews on tap ranging from IPA through porter/stout. You may have even had some of their flagship beers elsewhere, such as JoCo Juice, a hazy IPA or Rolling in the Deep, a double New England IPA. I myself go for malt over hop, so I find their Marzen to be one of my favorite beers. If they have their Mexican lager on tap, then I also suggest sampling that as well. A flight of four runs you $14-ish and is a great value, as the sample sizes give you plenty of opportunity to really get a feel for their offerings. If you find something you really like, then you can take four-packs home to go in cans. Limitless is open almost every day, at least until 7:00 and when the weather is nice, the patio was a must do. There are frequently people playing a board game or just enjoying the space, and while I don't want this to be just another noisy space, they could do with maybe a TV or two more. But that is just me being picky and since they are in the neighborhood, I like visiting whenever I can.
