This piece was done at "Tattoo Culture" by artist "Gene Coffey"
D D.

It became clear to me that once I had finally made up my mind to get a tattoo that I was no longer interested in traditional tattoos. I came across work done by the Tattooist at TC via their old Flickr account and was really impressed with the work done by Gene, Loic, and Noon. Going in for the consultation, (my first) back in October 2012 at Tattoo Culture was easy. Like everyone getting a tattoo for the first time I had some ideas but for those who have had tattoos for years you know that not every sketch or idea can work. I decided to get my first piece from Gene because I love his ink blot style and surprisingly he was willing to "work" with my idea as long as he got the freedom to do what he wanted. They keep the shop and their equipment quite clean and more so than I have seen while I was considering other places. After each session, I got a small care package with printed instructions but for those of you getting large or extra large tattoos expect to buy more A&D ointment - Walgreen's typically has the large tube on sale for 4.99. You can pay cash or credit for their service and use your deposit towards the total cost of the tattoo. It was was a pleasant experience working with Gene. He doesn't talk much but the work he does is unique and demands his attention. The results of his efforts speak for itself (see the attached image below). I am definitely going to go back.

Danielle M's doll tattoo

I wanted a great tattoo from a place so clean I could eat off the floors. That place was Tattoo Culture. I spoke to Gene and showed him a picture of what I wanted--a tattoo of a little doll I've had since I was a baby (in honor of my grandmother who would fix her when she ripped). He sketched it, tattooed it, and I love it. I get compliments on it all the time, particularly about the vividness of the color and close resemblance to the actual doll.

Gene Coffey: Saguaro Blossoms

Cut right to the chase: DO IT! Atmosphere: First thing I notice is the people in the environment and it is very welcoming with a nice modern feel to it. I was getting a meaningful piece and I wanted to feel as comfortable as possible. This place definitely did that. Called a week ahead to set up a consolation, went in, brought in reference materials for him, talked for about 20-30 minutes, and I booked 5 months or so in advance. They are very professional and set up google calendar reminders (after the consultation) so that everyone is on the same page with dates. Artist: My artist was Gene Coffey which I highly recommend if your design involves flowers. He has a unique watercolor/brush technique, and with his use of fine lines, creates beautiful art work. I had 3 saguaro blossoms that I wanted to represent for each member of my family. Being a graphic designer, I had to let go and let him do his thing. I could tell that he had a lot of fun doing this piece because I gave him the freedom to do HIS style. NEVER TELL A TATTOO ARTIST HOW TO USE THEIR STYLE. Give them your concept, talk it out, and don't be an @$$hole. One thing that did make me nervous was that I emailed a week before to see the sketch and he replied that he usually doesn't work on the design until the night before. I respect that he was honest and knowing his skills along with the reputation he has built, I trusted him. The day of my tattoo, he had an amazing sketch (which is in the picture section) of a saguaro with blossoms. Only problem was that he had 3 too many blossoms and that I had only asked for 3 total. I don't blame Gene as I did book him 5 months in advance and it may have slipped his mind, but all in all, it was no problem as he hopped on his computer to cut the 6 blossoms down to 3. Within 30 minutes, he fixed it and I was under the needle. Some may get mad but one thing everyone should understand while getting a tattoo is, that it's not a race. Patience is virtue and after seeing his sketch, the extra 30 minutes to my 5 month wait was well worth it! Over all, I'm super happy with what I have on my body for the rest of my life! For the art you get, WELL worth the price (don't forget to tip)! Even though I told myself this would be the last one for a while, I see myself going back sooner than expect. See ya soon Gene!

HoG has been 25 years in my neighborhood, so I walked in there on a whim. Banna at the front desk was warm and welcoming. We talked about what I wanted, She showed real interest in a raw design idea of mine. A small thing of straight lines, concentric circles and a Chinese character that, as a whole, represented deeper things only to me. She recommended Mike G. who she said makes the cleanest lines and showed me samples of his work along with a couple of other artists'. My appt with Mike was a few days later. I had emailed my sketches and a reference picture for the Chinese character. He had the design ready. It was true to my idea and needed no alteration. He had it mocked up in slightly different sizes and even produced an in between size when I asked. Just around two inches was prefect. I was completely at ease with Mike from hello. And despite warnings from a friend who has several tats that the inner upper arm is a tender area, I gotta say, the screaming baby on the subway going there cause me more discomfort than Mike's needle. His lines are indeed clean, crisp, straight or even in all the right ways. Here is the character a half inch high looking like it was applied with a brush. At four weeks everything's healed very nicely. I thought I couldn't be happier with it, then I learned something special. The character which means "not yet" is also the character representing the "earthly branch" connected to my zodiac animal, the goat. I love this tattoo! Thank you Mike. Thank you Banna. And HoG, I hope you're there for another 25. Jules

Electric Anvil had an extensive selection of different types jewelry and the pieces themselves weren't insanely overpriced like some other shops in the area. our piercer named Jose had a calm, professional demeanor, yet was very easy to speak to and gladly answered all our questions even going so far as to give advise on and check our other piercings we hadn't even had done there and gave us detailed aftercare directions (we had a few random questions about jewelry size, checked if some of our piercings were still open, etc). each piercing Jose did was quick and painless, which was largely in part due to his competence and experience. he was extremely cautious when prepping and piercing us, repeatedly changing his gloves throughout and re-sanitizing everything he used, touched or even looked at. while i felt bad he had to go through so many pairs of gloves, it was very reassuring to see he took our safety and the sanitation process seriously--especially for a first time visit. we both had a 3rd hole pierced on one ear and all together it came out to be about $70 each ($40 for the piercing and $30 for the jewelry). there wasn't a single thing i didn't like about the experience we had at Electric Anvil and i would highly recommend it to anyone looking to get a piercing! 11/10

I have seen her work on Instagram and so I was not surprised by the quality of art that she is capable of. But when my piece was finalized, I was mind blown and speechless at the level of art that she was able to create. She was able to take the ideas I had and elevate it to a whole new level. She truly is a professional, never rushed and took her time with the smallest detail and I can't thank her enough for this master piece that she had created. On top of all that she showed great hospitality and was very accommodating. This was definitely worth every dollar I had spend and I look forward to more projects with Lynn in the future. I have some ideas that I want to share with my tattoo artist known as X. The shop is located in a quaint side of Brooklyn that surrounded by other professional workspaces. As i visited this location I could clearly see the difference in lost shops and how this one is laid out. It has an open floor plan which relieves the customer of that claustrophobic feeling with plastered walls and loose fitting curtains. It is very clean, well lit from natural light with at least 3 stations for tattooing. I met Luis who is an amazing artist from Venezuela. His work can be found on the web. One of their new artist is mine. She goes by the nickname X- she was working at the Hawaii location and just relocated to Brooklyn. Her work and journey to the tattoo industry is phenomenal! You can read a small window of her background in this link: https://issuu.com/flourishdigitalmagazine/docs/flourish_digital_magazine_-_september_-_october_f/13 Allow her to design your next statement. Now, I was a walk-in but I had emailed with them several times regarding price and availability. I appreciate that they told me to call before coming in (which I did) because I didn't want to go in vain. Big Mike is super nice, chill and very easy to talk to. I'm a teacher and he's a soon to be art teacher so we bonded over that. Really cool guy and very patient and understanding. Mike took the time to search for fonts that resembled what I wanted and then trying out different sizes, never once rushing the process which I appreciated. Once the tattoo outline was placed on my skin, he again asked me if the placement was what I wanted and size, again thanks for doing that. The second thing was the lack of correct equipment. He used thick rusty pliers (which is incredibly risky because this piercing is STILL HEALING!!) and scissors instead of ring opening pliers of flat nose pliers. My brand new, expensive jewlery broke in his hands without compensation. He stated "this is the risk that you take". However, no risk was stated and there was no debriefing done. I've had rings of a similar gauge opened just fine. I'm very disappointed because My jewelry broke before I could wear it out and it was a waste of money because I cannot wear it anymore. He stated to me that "i've never seen a septum piercing this large before" which i could understand, but to me it shows that he should've declined the job if he knew he didn't have experience in it. This is my second weird experience with my septum piercing at this shop. The first time was when the piercer tried telling me what gauge i was at (assumed 16) and debated with me about with me knowing it was a 12. Then proceeded to say 20 gauge is thicker and 16 is thinner, which is opposite. The people on the piercing side here do not know what they are doing.
