My review is specifically for dropping off / picking up my Barbour Beadnell jacket at this location for re-waxing. Both drop off and pickup was such a quick and easy process. Much easier than if I had attempted to re-wax my jacket myself which would have only ended up in disaster. The cost was $50 plus $20 for shipping from / to the store to / from their repair center so $70 total, and I'd say that was worth it to me. When I picked up my jacket, they even gifted me a branded Barbour hanger which I will be sure to use going forward to hang my jacket. The quality of Barbour products is unmatched so I will be sure to come back to shop again. And the employees I dealt with on both visits were super friendly as well. read more

I resent receiving a gift from Barbour. Over the summer, I was given a dog jacket in the wrong size and had to return it, they charged a hefty return fee. Once it started getting cool I went to the store to buy a new one and was told they'd be in stock next month. A month later, I came back and they said they didn't carry the coats. I tried to order it online but there's no way to use store credit online because they're separate stores. The solution they offered was to order it from a store in a different state and then use the store credit, but I would have no way to know whether the coat would fit with my dogs harness because there's 0 info about the coats online. This gift has only been a waste of time and mental energy and since they charged the return fee my store credit wouldn't even cover a new coat. If I could give 0 stars I would. While the customer service person was nice, all she did was confirm that they're system makes no sense. I tried to leave a review on their website (which only features 5 star glowing reviews) but you can't actually leave a review there. read more

I have been a fan of Barber products for more than 40 years and have had several of their classic coats which I have used just as they were intended, in all weather and all field conditions. Early in the summer I brought a coat in to be reproofed and repaired. I was surprised at the time what the high cost was, compared to my previous experience sending coats in through Orvis. I was also surprised how poor the understanding was of the store personnel, and that they would have a significant shipping charge to return the coat to me. When I finally received the coat and started using it this fall, I was surprised at how poor the repairs were. One part of the lining I had designated was only partly repaired and other pieces not done as well as Barbour's previous standard. It is a shame when a valued, premium brand no longer has the same standards. read more

Barbour is a phenomenal brand to begin with, so it didn't take much effort on the behalf of the store to deliver a great experience. Barbour is the quintessential British hunting and outdoors brand. Their masterpiece is the waxed cotton jacket, and at Barbour by Peter Elliot you will find every single style available, in every color, in nearly every size. One of the great features here is that they will rewax your jackets (which they recommend doing about every two years). The waxing service is only $27, and it sure beats buying a can of the wax and attempting to do it yourself (very, very messy!). Another advantage to this shop is that, unlike Barney's or Bergdorf's, they stock way more than just the iconic coats. Barbour's full line is a collection of classic British cold-weather gear, with every piece being just as classically beautiful as it is practical. read more

This review isn't for Barbour but for this particular store. I bought a Barbour quilted jacket from this store a couple of years ago and was very impressed by the staff who were polite, helpful & very professional. I went back just a couple of weeks ago to look at a waxed coat and sadly, the staff seems to have changed. I had to wait for the two sales assistant to finish a personal conversation despite the fact that I was standing right in front of them. In the end, I had to interrupt them as it seemed their conversation wasn't going to stop anytime soon. I asked them if they would check in the back to see if they had a particular jacket in my size as I couldn't see one on the shop floor. I then stood bemused as they practically argued about who was going to go. Wow, sorry about asking you to DO YOUR JOB. Then just today, I went in to see if they had restocked. I had also seen a sign standing at the front of the store saying that if you donated a warm coat, $50 would be deducted from the cost of a full-price item. I had read this sign on 3 separate occasions - very carefully just to make sure I was understanding it correctly, and it said this offer was on until 31st December. When I went in today (12/26), there was no sign of said sign so I asked an older man (manager?) who very brusquely told me, no, that was just for Christmas. I told him the sign had stated that the offer was open 'til 31st December - he said no, it hadn't. So apparently, I'm either illiterate or a liar. Or maybe they are just shifty... Oh well, guess I'll be spending my hard-earned $400 at a different Barbour retailer. read more

The sales staff needs to back-off. I walked-in on Sunday to briefly look at the selection of vests and coats for my girlfriend. Within seconds of entering the store, we were pounced-upon by a salesperson. Rather than look at the selection, we spent our time trying to avoid this salesperson, who had shockingly little knowledge of the various products. For example, she initially explained that certain vests are true to size, which they are not, then reversed herself by saying that she is usually a 0/2 and wears a 4 in the vest she was wearing -- the very definition of not true to size. Then, another salesperson, clearly eavesdropping on our conversation, which we were intentionally trying to keep quiet, barges in to suggest that we shouldn't decide between a vest or a coat and buy both. This was the final straw -- bordering on the sleazy. Your staff needs to back the f**k off. Had we been left alone to search the various products, we most likely would have bought something. With the experience we had, we left as quickly as we could -- and bought Barbour products at another vendor, where we were left in peace to search and consider and make our own choices. read more

After waiting 7 weeks for my jacket to be patched and another 2.5 to get it waxed because they butchered the patch job I came to pick up my jacket from the Wooster location instead of Madison ave because it's closer to my apartment. I asked them to send it to Soho because I didn't want to deal with the rude people at Madison and because it is closer to my apartment. After reviewing the jacket before accepting I noticed that it looked like someone stabbed my jacket in the shoulder with a knife. It went through the garment bag and all the layers of the jacket. It seems like it was stabbed at the Madison store before it was shipped to Soho. The manager at the Wooster store admitted that they have been having trouble at the Madison store that is now under new ownership. They have horrible customer care I didn't write a review after my first incident with them regarding my jacket patching but I felt compelled to do so now after finally getting my jacket back a second time. This is one of two Barbour stores in Manhattan, the other is in Soho. This store carries its more traditional brands while the Soho store has its more contemporary pieces. None the less, I found what I was looking for and managed to snag a contemporary coat up here on the UES after they moved a bunch of coats to this location. It took a few minutes to get the attention of employees as the store was quiet busy but I was well taken care of and given a variety of options if I did not want the coat and wanted to exchange it for one at the Soho store. The staff are extremely knowledgeable and the product is superb. I am thrilled with my purchase and though the coats are not cheap, they do last a lifetime! read more

I really love my Barbour coats - extremely comfortable and very good quality. Currently own three different ones - two coats for the Fall/Spring (early and late) and one for the dead of winter. This location has a great selection of Barbour jackets to choose from. The staff is very good at making recommendations for you and they give honest opinions as to how the jacket looks on you which is nice to know. If they don't have something on display that they think will work, they'll even head back to the storage area and pull them out the selection they think will. Had that happen to me on my first visit which really impressed me. So yes, I highly recommend that you give Barbour a try. I'm sure you'll find a coat that is exactly what you've been looking for. read more

I first called the soho store for the Heron cape and they are all sold out so I was very disappointed & i said why do you have that on the website if its discontinue? i really like that jacket & the staff just went silent. Anyhow I stopped by the Soho store just to see if they have anything I like. The staff was helpful but didn't really help me find what I wanted. When I got to this store, staff was very helpful & Grace really helped me find what I wanted. Not helped me find the cape in my size I wanted but really helped me out picking out a good cost that fits me. She helped me understand I can change out the snaps colors and they can hem sleeves for me which means how ever you want it, it'll come out perfect. Grace had actually helped me find my size of the cape all the way from Boston. I can't thank her and the staff enough of how happy I am. When my coat arrived, there was a nice thank you card for purchasing. It was really impressive and I guess one of the reason why their merchandise are a bit pricy. Great quality and great service. If you do have the $ to spend for a good jacket, should give it a visit. read more

A COMPLETE NIGHTMARE! I went to exchange a coat, and took two shirts instead. Next day I returned to exchange one of the shirts for one smaller, because they didn't have it, and I agreed to go to the Soho store to pick my size where they supposedly they have reserved one for me. When I got to the Soho store from the Upper West Side store, they didn't have it, as they told me so. UNBELIEVABLE! I do believe they did that on purpose. Therefore I requested a refund, but because the sales person originally at the Madison store did the ticket as a store credit instead of an exchange, "the money couldn't be refunded" I had to fill a form "requesting my own money" to the Corporate Office of Barbour, so they could send me a check. I will never again buy at Barbour. They are a bunch of incompetents. They can't treat people like that. It just a cheap store with a known brand. read more

I had a very negative experience this Madison Avenue Brbour. I had every intention to buy one of a jacket nio this store. I walked all the way from my apartment at 42nd and 2nd to the store at 80th and Madison, in the cold, fully ready to buy a jacket. When I walked in the store the security guard greeted me but that was the end of your customer service. I was not greeted by any Sales Associate but then proceeded to help myself and try on 10 different jackets. At one point all three Sales Associates were free and no one came over to help me and even at one point the young man working there was buttoning jackets up right next to me but still did not offer to help me. There as an older man resting against the back counter chatting on with his co-workers. I was also getting frustrated because the hangers would say one size at the top but the hangtags on the actual jackets said a different size. I was so frustrated I left. For $300 quilted jackets they must sell very well on their own. read more

My husband and I were in NYC for the weekend celebrating my birthday and decided to stop in on our way to the art museum to look around. We were approached by a few of the friendly staff members. Ultimately, it was Merritt-Grace who was by far the most helpful. Turns out she's also the Store Manager of that store. We've always had good service at Barbour stores but, I must say, she's the best representative of the brand we've ever encountered. Agree with Matthew about the brand and history. It's a storied brand, very English, and has recently contemporized the brand's image. It's pricey stuff but you're buying the feeling of the brand and history, with a bit of the quality. It is indeed good stuff, but that doesn't mean its your only option and that there isnt comparable quality for lesser price out there. It just feels good to wear a Barbour. Quality craftsmanship, and the feel/smell of a waxed jacket is inexplicable, oozing romantic thoughts of carrying grandpa's shotgun through the English countryside looking for pheasant. Even though I'm in NYC, it still guards against the weather and the wax smell hides the smells of this city. Hard to explain till you wear one. The staff is very friendly and helpful, a treat given its Mad.Ave., and the selection ok. There's a lot more Barbour to be found out there, but the store has the basics. Get something, even a flatcap, and wax it yourself to experience the joys of owning a vintage process piece like this. read more

Once you purchase the item, the customer service level drops all the way down to zero. When they make mistakes, they are unapologetic and annoyed by you. Beforehand, they are helpful, but if you should have problems with the items or require assistance with the items after purchase, get ready to be treated like a 2nd class citizen. They put their best faces for getting into your wallet and not making sure you're a satisfied customer. And should you bring back an item that you didn't buy there because you need help, hold on to your hats because they are rude. I'd avoid going there and to purchase a Barbour coat from some other dept store that carries Barbour items (but have friendlier customer service). While the clothes might have some value, it loses its feeling of quality after being treated badly at the store. read more

I took a flyweight Chelsea jacket to this location which had buttons that were chipping, paint coming off and was flat. I was accused of drying the jacket at a high setting which made it flat (I don't think it was ok to use that tone with me but I digress) That was on 10/8. I was told by the manager it would be a week or two and that it would be messengered to my office. Yesterday I called the repair center in NH and was told they were 3 weeks behind and that it would be 4-6 weeks. When I asked if the store knew, he said yes and you should've been contacted. When I called the store they said that the manager was no longer employed and pretty much, tough. At this price point and as a 20 year customer I expected more. The day I took the repair in, I purchased a $349 Tartan jacket. I would have expected a little more empathy. I won't return the new jacket bc it's been worn but there are plenty of other shops in NYC. Never going back to this location. read more

I called her Saturday with my credit card. My jacket, liner, and hood shipped yesterday. They arrived at my home in VA this morning. Grace is the best! read more

Barbour has earned a reputation for high-end sporting wear and hunting garb (often for wannabees hunting wild game on Madison Avenue), even if of late the prices seem to have entered their own reality (compared to lower priced, but equally well crafted Filson clothing, or even LL Bean). The issue fo me is the Barbour Madison Ave store at 80th Street. The store itslef is cozy, but the sales people seem angry that they work at the store, and seem hostile toward customers. The sales person (with the British accent) was on the phone both times I was recently in the store, lost in some personal conversation that she obviously wanted everyone to hear about. The store manager was too busy in the back to deal with customers, so three customers wandered about aimlessly, at least for a while until two left with a look of puzzlement. The third sales person was clueless and was occupied folding clothing that had been already folded. I left after a few minutes, equally bewildered. When I returned a second time for some clothing repair, a service Barbour promotoes vigorously, I was met with contempt once the sales person got off the phone (this time she was talking to someone about Fresh Direct): how dare I ask a customer rep to look up the cost of repair. It actually was much worse than this, but if I go on I might seem light a lunatic. Suffice it to say this is an awfully unplesant store, and makes the customer service at J Crew or The Gap look world class. You'd do better to go online and avoid the sales tax. read more
