It seems to me that Spearfish is trapped in this culinary netherworld. It's not quite remote enough to have the tiny, home cooked, fresh from scratch, down home restaurants of yesteryear. Nor does it have the newer, chef driven foodie places that you'll find in larger cities. Instead, they have spots like... Chili's or Applebees. Ummmm no... But it's not all bleak! Progress has arrived in the form of a burrito joint. Imagine a gourmet version of Chipotle with an Indian twist. Basically it's the same exact formula that has made Chipotle famous. You probably know the drill. Enormous burrito or opt for the burrito bowl. Rice. Meat. Toppings. Only they have a much wider variety of options for each part of the process, including items like curry sauce. A sign on the wall says it's all sourced locally which is very cool too. Like this place a lot. Like the vibe a lot. If you are driving along I-90, I highly recommend you swing through town and check this place out. read more

There are a lot of giant burrito joints out there, but Barbacoa's in Spearfish, SD, is one of the better offerings. Featuring a great selection of fresh ingredients, bottled beer and an assortment of burrito/wrap/rice bowl selections, this is one of my favorite places to grab a quick lunch or dinner. Each menu item has a variety of options, including shrimp, steak, chicken, salmon and halibut. Various sauces, such Monterey cheese sauce, a pad thai like peanut sauce and a curry sauce give additional flavor options (I recommend the Monterey or the pad thai). Salsa's include various mild and medium selections, as well as some hotter choices. Try a single line of the "Chuck [Norris]" sauce, but be sure to get a bottle of beer to chase it down. Prices are reasonable and the restaurant is clean and spacious. Highly recommended. read more

We stumbled across Barbacoa's while driving to a different restaurant we had looked up on Yelp. Obviously this was some kind of cosmic intervention, because we ended up having a really good meal. For starters, when we arrived the employees informed us that it was $5 burrito night (chicken and a couple other options were available for that deal). Any time my family of 5 can eat out for under $30 I am trilled. I'm not going to lie, the ordering set-up is very similar to Chipotle. They did seem to offer a bit more variety and everything was very fresh and flavorful. I would say it is a bit better than Chipotle just because it doesn't have that mass-produced feel. The restaurant is spacious with plenty of seating. The staff was very friendly and helpful. I really liked this place and I'd highly recommend it to anyone visiting the area. read more

This is my new default for lunch. Let's be honest, Spearfish is not crammed full of culinary options. Still, Barbacoa's is not just a slightly larger fish in a small pond. Their burritos feature decent tortillas, well seasoned ingredients, and flavorful salsas with decidedly non-midwestern heat levels (you might live in South Dakota if you've ever been served a burrito con mayonnaise with a side of cole slaw). They also offer an excellent handmade Monterey Jack cheese sauce and some interesting variations on a theme (i.e. try the Pad Thai burrito, and get the bamboo shoots). They'd get five stars on flavor alone, but their prices are bit high unless you stick to veggies. Also, server friendliness is hit or miss. read more

Small restaurant with fun environment. I got the chicken bowl and my husband got ground beef. Both were quite tasty and the portions were generous. The Chuck Norris sauce is very spicy but also has excellent flavor. Spicy items were labeled and non-labeled items were actually mild which is nice for those of us sensitive to heat. Amazing!! We live in Spearfish and we go here often. Burritos are the best! Don't let it being in a strip mall fool you, great friendly environment. Employees are friendly and very helpful. Very sanitary and I guarantee you will be satisfied by the end of your visit. Also cookies and homemade brownies are pretty good, especially there honey habenaro brownies, Chocolaty and a hint of spiciness. Ingredients are fresh and delicious. I was not impressed. Normally eating a Chipotle style burrito is no big deal for me. But I left this one half eaten. I had steak, which was chewy, watery and not flavorful. Veggies weren't very warm. Overall there are lots of options and I like trying small-owner businesses, but I wouldn't choose this over one of the major chain options if they were side by side. Maybe just the style of "Mexican" food that goes through spearfish doesn't agree with me, as that's two strikes now for the Queen City. read more

SUPER disappointed. Driving through Spearfish at lunch time, I wanted a burrito. This place had some great reviews and I was excited to eat here. I had a normal burrito with chicken. We took our lunch to a park and tried to eat but it was so bad, my husband and I had a few bites and threw the rest in the garbage. How can a burrito taste so bad?? It just tasted weird. I can't pinpoint what it was that made it taste so strange...but nevertheless, it's the first burrito in the history of eating burritos that went in the garbage. Very disappointing. OH, and why does it say Asian Fusion in the description of the restaurant?? I looked all over the menu and couldn't see what they were talking about. Nothing seemed Asian to me. While there are plenty of different selections at Barbacoa - fish, chicken, pork and beef - the Barbacoa burrito is my favorite. Giant sized and spicy, it's one of the best bets for a quick meal when you are in the Black Hills. If you want something with fewer carbs, they will put all the ingredients on a fresh bed of lettuce. read more

This is like a Qdoba or a Chipotle only they dont seem like a chain (I dont think they are) and they offer ingredients into the burritos like blackened salmon, shrimp, etc. The sauces are also a good spice kick, like pad thai sauce and fresh and creamy queso. Cool enough, they also offer Odell Brewery beers. You wait in line to make your burrito/fajita/salad bowl and then it's self seating. Prices range $4-8, vegetarian friendly. read more

This place is like a Mexican subway only ten times better! The food is scrumptious! Healthy and good for you too! Different choices of meats, beans and veggies to pick from. And custom create your own burrito or rice bowl. You have to try the barbacoa burrito. You will not go away hungry. All the food is huge. This place has real homemade ingredients - none of the meats, veggies, or toppings come from a box - which means that everything is fresh and delicious. The food is always soo good but it is always hit-or-miss when it comes to who is dishing your food. Some of the employees give you big scoops of everything and others give you so little of everything that it is sometimes less than half the amount I would get if the other employees gave me my food. I don't want to have to pay the same price for different amounts of food. I hope that either they train their employees more to give uniform portions or they charge by weight. Well, we were on our way from NoDak (Teddy Roosevelt National Park) on our way to Wyoming (Devils Tower - hopefully soon to be renamed to Bear Lodge) when we somehow found ourselves in the middle of the Sturgis 75th.
