Normally 5 stars, tonight was a 1. Unfortunately, Bar Smith stopped accepting state issued IDs. I have always had a great time at Bar Smith. The roof top vibes always get me moving. The energy, the lights, the music create an atmosphere that make it easy to find a groove. When I presented my new license using Apple wallet, the bouncer refused to acknowledge it. Some people just have a hard time with change... or accepting the ways of the future. I went this weekend for girls night and stepped to the side to allow the rest of my friend group to get ID'd because I was the first in line and one of the bouncers came up to me with the audacity to tell me to "step to the back of the line if I'm broke". I stepped to the side to be respectful to everybody walking in and out and to have somebody who's supposed to be there to keep me "safe" talk to me so disrespectful was absolutely crazy. Never again! We came on a Saturday night. We bar hopped around Phoenix and this was our last stop. Arrived around 1030. Bottom floor is hip hop and upstairs is Latin music. We hung out around the bar. Bartenders are friendly, quick, efficient. It started to get busy around 1130 and it filled up but not as full I know it could be. Music was . Dj had the crowd dancing all night. Good music spinning, an efficient bar, and always an interesting crowd. You never know what to expect here, so stay aware and have your antennas up on alert. My favorite is reggae night on the 2nd floor, and taking out of town guests there on a good ol' Thursday night when you can order bottle service, hookah, and food if you have those types of friends visiting...all depends on what you like. Whether it's a first date or a hangout with friends , their staff's priority is making sure you're taken care off. Treat the bartenders with respect, and that won't go unnoticed. We came it at 9PM when it was relatively quiet. Good enough to have a solid conversation. By the time 10-11PM hit, the bar filled in a ton, but was still well staffed. Jazz primarily assisted us and was very engaging/attentive, despite the crowd. She even recommended & mixed amazing drinks when we weren't sure what to get. Discrimination Alert On May 10th around 945 pm , me and my husband went to Bar Smith and the security denied him with his ID from Ghana and then said he can let him in if he gives him 20.00. I stopped him and said no he has a passport at our hotel (The Hyatt) which was right around the corner we came back to the bar and the security Denied him entry again with his passport that also had a K1 Visa with my name on it as his American wife this is totally Discrimination and we will be speaking to an attorney about this matter. read more

This is a two level club which plays hip hop on the first floor and EDM/electronica on the second floor. The second floor is basically a giant patio with a nice view of downtown Phoenix. I came on a Saturday night and the cover was $5 for ladies. It's a nice place with a view especially for $5, its neighbors were pricey. Next door to the left is Monarch Theatre which has a $10 cover charge, and its neighbor to the right is Sky Lounge which also has a $10 cover charge. So for $5 at Bar Smith you get the same view and a nice outdoor dance floor. read more

Came here for an event and they are not only disorganized but so unprofessional. a they made us wait outside for over an hour before letting us in even though we were told to come earlier to get ready for the event. They have the ac blasting to a point where it's like a freezer box in here. I would understand that if it was hot out and there are a lot of people in here but it's 60° out and there's a total of 10 people in here. Went to use the bathroom and not only do they have the door propped open, but they have half a fucking door to one of the stalls in the bathroom. After our microscopic martini's @ Hanny's, my bf tiff and I decided to walk over to Bar Smith and check it out. It was a perfect day and we sat out on the front patio. The bartender came out with a beaming smile to take our order. We asked what her specialty was and she said Citrus Martini's soooo.... Citrus Martini's it was. They came out promptly and were DELICIOUS! (see pics) We were also in the mood for something sweet so she also suggested the chocolate torte and we are so glad she did. It was decadent and purrrrrfect. The music was nice, the weather was as good as it gets in AZ, the service was great and the martini's were yummy. What more could you ask for?? Bar Smith is a cool different type of venue for very reasonable drink prices and mixture of music. It's right downtown in a cool spot with other clubs on each side. This is eclectic, dance, hip hop, and house music all in one. There are two stories each one with DJs playing different music. The top floor is outside on the balcony roof top with the entire wall images from a projection screen with a bar and decent size dance floor for a roof top spot. This place isn't pretentious which is always nice that you can just have a good night out and enjoy yourself without having to be dressed to the nines or try act hard and get bottle service for $1000 like you do in Scottsdale and people just staring for no reason. I won't get on my soap box here, not the place. DJ Senbad is the nuts!!! He is a freaking awesome DJ and all around nice guy that is very hospitable. I know this because I see him high fiving, hugging people and always happy when he is on the ones and twos. Always plays good music and doesn't skip a beat. The drinks are a great price. They do good pours and don't over charge you like some of these other places that try to stiff you with their lame pour counts. I would absolutely recommend going here especially if you are downtown and want to dance and enjoy a good crowd. Good placed to go if you want to get into a fight with drunk a-holes. My friend got punched in the face 3 times by a chick and then she proceeded to put her cigarette out IN HIS EYE. Thank God she missed at hit his eyebrow so he did not get hurt. After the bouncers kicked her out, she stalked us at the front entrance waiting for us to leave. We did not want to fight with her because, she would have gotten beat really badly. 3 men vs 1 woman? She must have been nuts. Instead of calling the police over to arrest her for assault, battery, and harassment, the staff let her stalk us for 20 minutes before they finally escorted us secretly out the back exit. Extremely over crowded roof top. Literally Butt to butt. There are actually some cool people who come here but the trashy people make it not worth it. My safety is more important. Oh and someone threw a glass beer bottle off the roof top directly into the line of people waiting to enter downstairs. Fortunately it missed and hit the ground, and no one was hurt. Lastly, $10 cover for everyone including women. Not worth it at all. Drinks are cheap at around $4 so that's the only plus. read more

Off for a night of dancing the girls had selected Bar Smith in downtown Phoenix. My immediate concern was "What do I wear?" Again, "WHAT DO I WEAR?" I wanted something comfortable shoe wise but didn't want to get turned away at the door. (I'm from New York. You have no idea what pain and suffering we can go to. After a while you can forget your feet are numb from tortuous heels.) Turns out Bar Smith is very relaxed in the dress code area. Provided you're 1) of age and 2) wearing clothing YOU'RE IN! Given that I'm on the slippery hill to old age/death I painted on the face carefully. (Smooches to the bouncer who smiled when I passed my ID over.) Sneakers are ok. (Before you judge: I wasn't wearing white track shoes! Cute slip ons paired with an over the top cocktail dress.) Moolah The bar doesn't charge cover before 10pm. Mixed well drinks are $4. Nothing spectacular here as they are served in thin plastic. (Yes they will serve you a double for $8.) Open Tabs You can move between the downstairs and upstairs bars. Like a goof I didn't realize that initially and was returning downstairs to place my order. Just don't forget to pick up your card on the way out! The DJ's are a fun group on a Saturday. Plenty of people were doing the silly dance (come on, we're not on Dancing With The Stars) showered in darkness upstairs and downstairs. Actually the lighting was crazy. (See my photos!) We came out to celebrate our friends 1 year anniversary of freedom after divorcing a toxic individual, so we checked out a bunch of spots in downtown phoenix ... Bar Smith seemed to be somewhat empty for a Friday night, but the DJ's here seemed better than their neighboring competitors. The rooftop lounge area was cool, but once again it was pretty sparsely occupied. It was actually so slow in here that we really didn't stay very long ... Most of the crowd seemed a bit younger than my crew and lots of amateurs running about. The atmosphere is alright - it seemed pretty slimier to its neighbors for the most part though. There was nothing that stood out about this venue. It was just okay/average overall ... I would possibly stop in again if there was a specific DJ here spinning that I would want to see. read more

I love this place. I have been coming here for many years, mainly for the Saturday night Solstice party, but sometimes also for the other nights as the offerings have expanded. I really love the upstairs balcony dancefloor because you can dance under the stars and sometimes even the full moon. The crowd (in general) is very welcoming and unpretentious. Most people come to dance and enjoy the music. You can dress up if you want to or you can just kick it. This is one of the few places that I am comfortable, as a woman, going to by myself. I don't have to worry about being groped or harassed. It might happen, but the security crew in here is on point and very protective of their (well-behaved) patrons. The drinks are well-poured and well-priced. I love the heavy-handed bartenders! The owners of this bar expanded and own some of the surrounding properties, so they now offer even more musical choices, though BarSmith is still the epicenter. There's salsa, banda, house, techno, tech-house, hip-hop, grime, dub-step, progressive, minimal, ...even jungle and DnB at one point... I mean I can't even list them all. Plus things change, different people will run different weeklies at different times. This bar is an institution for downtown Phoenix. I remember when it was literally the only place to go. Even with new spots opening up this is still a stong hold for good music. The parties and the type of music played here can be kind of seasonal, with the exception of Saturday nights, which is the night that started it all, and kind of the foundation that the bar rests on. Saturday night upstairs is based in deep house but genres are so fluid, so upstairs has a healthy mix of deep-house-related music. On Saturdays the downstairs is a really solid hip-hop night too. It's nice to go between the two floors, they complement each other, like wasabi for your sushi. I could go on forever about this place! read more

Have been going to this place for almost the last 2 years, it's actually the one bar I really go to Downtown. I receive text messages through out the week for free entry & drink specials for certain days (typically Thursday - Saturday). I have never had any issues with getting in using the text messages that I receive until this last Saturday (03/31/18). It was me, my friend & boyfriend..my friend & I get to the hostess/cashier girl we show her the text, she asked for our names then says we're not on the list. We again show her the text & explain with the text it's free entry before 11pm that our names doesn't have to be on a list. She looked confused said she doesn't know anything about this text message. She then called over the security guard, he looked at the text, shrugged his shoulders & said he didn't know either. She said she would let us in for free this time. While I was at the bar, I saw a few times girls showing the hostess their phones (assuming showing her the text too) so not sure if she let them or was giving them a hard time too. Again this is the first time this has happened to us & we've been getting these texts for the last year now. Please if you have new people let them know about this text or if these texts are no longer valid stop sending them. Also may want to look into having a bath attendant or someone to check on it through out the night...the women's restroom floor was completely wet & had toilet paper everywhere. When you enter the bar they have hip hop music playing and when you go upstairs they have sort of edm music playing. The area upstairs is outside so you just get a view of the tall buildings from their but it's cool. I have to be honest. I was reading the other BS reviews and I had no idea they served food. Where is the kitchen? I've been there 20 times. So take my review for what it's worth. Here's what Bar Smith is for me: You meet a girl in Scottsdale. She's typical. So you're like, "Believe it or not, downtown is where it's at..." Girl's like "Really?" And then you wink at her really awkwardly and grab her by the hand and whisk her away to Bar Smith. There she will see, in no particular order, members of the Latino community, mohawked audio visual specialists, a little guitar hero on the projector, people dancing in the middle of a watching circle, me in the corner crying, lesbians, women who are engaged who let me hit on them in front of their fiances without telling me they're engaged (apparently, little known fact, I'm supposed to look for a ring on some finger - whatever, too much work), and some dude name Bill Smith. I think his name is Bill. He introduced himself to me one time and in my head I'm like, "Dude, why are you introducing yourself to me at a bar at 1:00 AM using your whole name???" It occurred to me later the bar is his name sake and I bet he gets laid because of it from time to time. Good for him. Fun place. I wish I knew they had food. read more

Bar Smith has become quite a happening hot-spot in Downtown Phoenix. Several months ago, it was typically vacant and yet it oozed potential. Upstairs is where you want to be, but even then - it wasn't drawing much of a crowd. Now, it seems to be living up to its potential. I went here again tonight for Solstice (hosted by Tondra D.) which is held every Saturday and involves DJs, dancing, artists, and alcohol. Downstairs is a 3 star affair and upstairs is a 5. Solstice really sells the place though... perhaps too well as it's very crowded by the time midnight rolls around. It's a bit of an eclectic scene, so I'm not sure what they're going for. I think it's because downstairs draws a different crowd and they feel compelled to wander upstairs to check it out. Drink prices are a little high if you ask me, and the bathrooms aren't nice enough (or large enough) to warrant an attendant, yet there he is - handing me a towel and offering me gum and cologne and expecting a tip. Dude - you got to watch me piss... there you go... you're welcome. My least favorite part about this bar though is trying to park downtown. I do think it's a cool place. I definitely like it better when it's not as busy, but Solstice on Saturdays is a great event if you like dancing elbow to elbow to great music on the rooftop patio under the stars. read more

Yikes. I have been waiting on submitting this review since I just could not find the right words for this place. Like Si said earlier, this is not my typical scene. I am uncomfortable in bars. Generally, I am crying into my heinously over-priced, poorly mixed drink in the corner. But that is not relevant to this review at all. Pfff. I am not cool enough to understand why people like this place or why it is cool. This has to be one of the smallest dance clubs ever constructed. Are these cramped quarters good, so that someone is guaranteed to unknowingly grab your ass at some point in the evening? Also, the layout for the place, with two different mixes of house music permeating both floors, is obnoxious. It truly feels like the cool peeps are dry humping each other upstairs, and the not-so-great peeps are downstairs wishing they were upstairs. The cover was $7. WTF? I can think of millions of different things I could spend my cash on. But don't relax just yet, we haven't even explored the deplorable cost of drinks. This must be the place that Paul Rudd was referring to in 40 Year Old Virgin, when he states "Yeah, it is $9 beer night." $7 for a gin and tonic, that freaking Cocktail served us. I loved the fact that because I wasn't dancing vigorously or did not have huge, fake breasts, that it took him like 12 minutes to figure out we were there. This place is horrible. The icing is the fact that these huge bouncers plop themselves triumphantly in every corner, just waiting for the chance to push scrawny punks out of the way.
