The Bridge Cafe - Got that local brew for breakfast

We didn't have enough time for a sit down lunch so we got a couple of sandwiches to takeaway. It…read morewas 2 slices of white bread with a slice of ham in the middle. That's it. When they bragged about making their sandwiches on site, I expected something more...my fault...it was okay for a quick bite at a quick stop along a tour. The staff were definitely very friendly and the cafeteria area and gift shop looked very nice; maybe if we'd had more time...just average for me this time...

The more surprising thing is that this oversight hadn't even occurred to us until we sat down for lunch at the Bridge Cafe and saw that a couple of different breakfast plates were on option. It was not too late! I think we both went with the "Wee Yin," which was only £6 and came with an egg, meat (lorne sausage for me), bacon, a tattie scone, beans, and toast. I don't think I have a small appetite, but this was plenty. (The "Big Yin" adds additional good stuff for £2.5 more: haggis, black pudding, and mushrooms. I'd have to wait till the next morning to get some haggis and black pudding...) This was simple but hearty eating, and very satisfying at the midpoint of a drive from Skye back to the Edinburgh area. Spean Bridge is a charming little place, and this spotless cafe is colorful, has plenty of natural light, and a cheerful air to it. At one point, a couple of the young servers picked up instruments (acoustic guitar and accordion) just behind us, and I thought we were going to be subjected to acoustic jam versions of pop songs, just like those dreaded at a certain chain sandwich shop in the States. But this was pretty great, just an interlude of a couple of sprightly yet gentle instrumentals, and then they were back to their tables. Excellent spot.

Each starter had their own great flavor profiles and set our palates perfectly for what was to come. Be sure to meet Will who fully understands the menu and was quite fun to banter with a bit back and forth. Abbey was wonderful! She made excellent suggestions for our mains so we went with the venison, monkfish and lamb. Each was better than the last! Venison melts in your mouth! Monkfish was grilled perfectly and the lamb was pressed and almost like a confit!! Desert was just a awesome!! Raspberry sorbet with lemon tart, chocolate mousse and caramel as well as affagato using brown butter ice creme!! The experience was outstanding and the food was incredible!! Don't forget to get one or two Old Fashioned's from Matt who had been with the restaurant for 30 years!!! Don't miss this wonderful place on a quaint little alley on the west end!!

A Hidden Gem on Ashton Lane…read more Located on the fabulous and trendy Ashton Lane, this place is anything but typical. From the moment you step in, you can tell you're in for something special. The atmosphere is gorgeous -- a bright glass ceiling, lush plants all around, and a rustic stone floor that creates the perfect mix of romantic and relaxed. It feels ideal for a date night but also welcoming for families and friends. The food here is definitely on the high-end side, and while the portions are small for the price, what you're really paying for is excellence. Every bite showcases the chefs' skill, creativity, and attention to detail. The quality and flavor are absolutely superb -- the kind of dining experience you simply won't find anywhere else. We ordered the Pigeon Breast, Bramble, Chicory, Walnut , the Tenderstem Broccoli and the Organic Arran Leaf & Herb Salad with Mustard Vinaigrette, and both dishes completely blew us away. The flavor combinations were thoughtful, unique, and perfectly balanced. This is one of those special spots worth treating yourself to at least once. Whether it's a romantic evening or a celebration with friends, it's an unforgettable dining experience on one of Glasgow's most charming lanes.
