The place was teeming with associates doing all kinds of things, which I actually loved. I was seated quickly and started looking around. It was comfortable and familiar, even though it was my first time there. Then my server greeted me, called me "baby," and suddenly I felt like I had walked into my auntie's house. Okay. We were off to a good start. I ordered an Arnold Palmer and some catfish nuggets. Now, I knew I was in the right place when my server brought me TWO glasses of the most perfectly made Arnold Palmer. Two. Glasses. Start the happy dance. While I waited for my food, I looked around at the old photographs and magazine covers featuring Mama J's. It all made sense. The restaurant felt familiar because it felt like somebody's dining room. A place that has history. A place where people have been eating, talking, laughing and coming back for years. Then my catfish nuggets arrived. HOT. Golden. Crispy. When I tell you I did a happy dance... I ate those catfish nuggets with a knife and fork, humming to myself and saying, "This is the best catfish I have eaten in my life." And mind you, I eat out at least twice a week. So I ordered the crab cake sandwich with a side of macaroni and cheese. We were not particularly focused on vegetables because my server could not promise me the collards and cabbage weren't cooked with chicken broth. It's fine. I didn't really want my vegetables anyway. Then my plate arrived. HOT. I ate that macaroni and cheese and literally had to rock, hum and say to myself, "Woo. This food is good." The crab cake sandwich and fries were so good that I immediately knew some of them were coming home with me for lunch tomorrow. Because I may love food, but I also believe in planning ahead. Now let's talk about this crab cake. First, the brioche bun was EXACTLY the right bread. I am not a sliced-white-bread kind of woman. I need a brioche bun sturdy enough for the remoulade to hold onto. And then there was the crab cake. Enunciate that K. Fresh crabmeat. Maryland could NEVER. I know, I know. Maryland swears they have the best crab cakes. No ma'am. No sir. The best crab cake is sitting on Clay Street, about a mile from the James River, in Jackson Ward, the Harlem of the South. And the fries? HOT. You know that perfect fry: crispy on the outside, soft in the center? Yeah. Those. At this point, I was full and getting sleepy at 4 o'clock in the afternoon. But apparently that wasn't enough because I ordered some potato salad to go so I could top off tomorrow's lunch. Because priorities. I left Mama J's full as a tick. Came home. And promptly took a several-hour nap. That is how good this meal was. Mama J's, you have officially set the bar. 7 out of 5 stars. I am going back. Fortunately, I am a great cook like a homemade chef, however when it comes to treating yourself, I think this spot in the historic Jackson Ward neighborhood is a highlight here. This is way better than Lillie Pearl which is pretentious and does not have the soul, grounded, and kindred spirt of MJs. I loved the atmosphere, interior design/decorum, and vibe of the joint cool bar section and tables with seats. It would be nice if they had booths that were more comfortable, but again I won't hold it against them.

Very disappointed about the hidden up charges when ordering. No where on the menu or posted anywhere within the business does it say anything about an up charge when you order the combo! I ordered the two meats and picked the brisket and spare ribs and two sides. Went to go pay for my food and I was told the total was basically $36 for that little potions of food. Two little slices of brisket and two bones of spare ribs! After I had paid and the food was being prepared, I went and double checked the menu about my order. It said $24 for the two meat combo. So I asked the person that rang me up and was blown away when she said "there's an up charge of $5and some change for the brisket and $4 and some change for the spare ribs" This is unacceptable because NOWHERE on the menu does it say anything about any kind of up charge!!! Yes I am very PISSED and NEVER will return again! I feel like this is a scam depending on what the customer looks like determines the price you're going to pay for your meal!!!! read more

Went to Sunday brunch at Bar-Q and had a great experience overall. There was no wait when we arrived, which was a huge plus for a weekend brunch spot in Richmond. Service was quick and friendly, and the food came out fast. There was a small mishap with the mimosa flight at first, but the staff corrected it promptly and handled it professionally. The giant pancakes absolutely lived up to the hype. They were massive, fluffy, and genuinely delicious. Definitely something the table needs to share unless you come very hungry. I can see why people rave about them. The portions overall were generous, and the brunch menu had a really solid mix of comfort food and BBQ options. The atmosphere was casual and lively without feeling overwhelming, making it a good spot for both groups and a more laid-back brunch. Would definitely come back for the pancakes alone. read more

The fries were awesome and cooked for the right amount of time where they held their shape, while still being tender and sweet on the inside. The Mac was on point, perfectly balanced, noodles cooked perfectly, not mushy. And what can I say about that pie. Defined by an amazingly firm crust, cooked through and the filling had the right amount of sweetness to balance the iced topping. Looking forward to trying more items from this menu. We ended up getting 1 pound of pulled chicken, 1 pound of pulled pork, two pints of Mac and cheese because it's that good, potato salad and the southwest Cole slaw. We also got the rolls for sandwiches, Swayze sauce and the house sauce. For kicks we added a pound of rope sausage. So much food and so tasty! I've had all of their meats now and enjoy them all. The sides are also exceptional. My husband and I said we want to come and just have a meal there soon. I want to try their tacos. Anyway, we're lucky to have such good food right in our neighborhood. I got the Carlisle combo which came with 5 shrimp, 2 ribs, 2 whole chicken wings and 2 sides. The lady taking orders was super welcoming and friendly. Everything was good but the shrimp and the ribs were the highlights for me. They had a sauce similar to mambo sauce which was good as well. Not to mention, the pricing was pretty affordable too. Whenever, I come back to Richmond, I'll be sure to stop there and grab a plate!

It's a traditional mom & pop looking place with decent parking on both sides of the building. Staff was friendly and they seemed to have a steady flow of customers while we were there. I ordered 3 piece fried chicken, yams and collards. My significant other had chicken livers smothered in gravy and onions, mac & cheese, cucumber salad and potato salad. He THOROUGHLY enjoyed his chicken livers!! The container was COMPLETELY full of JUST THE LIVERS! The sides came in separate containers. We enjoyed all of the sides. The fried chicken was good although a little salty. Overall we had a pretty good experience.

The smoked-then-fried approach is stellar. Pulled pork is solid. Brisket is better than any I've had in town. Service was killer. It was a slow, late Saturday afternoon and the owner was working, and he couldn't have been more inviting. A pleasure to chat with him. Spot is little out of my way, but will have to find a way to work it into regular rotation.

They didn't over smoke it likes some places do and they allowed the slow process to create a genuine pork product and not forcing seasonings to hide an inferior smoke process. They have nailed it!
