My boyfriend, his family and I went here for his wee brothers birthday dinner. I'm going to preface my review with the horrible fact that I'd left my phone at home, so there were no pictures taken of the gorgeous food we had that night. Poor on my part! Anyway, back to Bar Leo. What a great place. Reservations were made for the 11 of us (I love big families) and it being a Monday night, the restaurant as a whole was pretty empty. We took up a good portion of their back room, with plenty of seating to spare. It was snowing that night, so it was nice to be seated in a warm, cozy area of restaurant. Our coats were taken by the waiter upon arrival and we were all sat. It took us a while to look over the menu, some being a little bit slower to decide than others, but once we got the orders rolling, it wasn't too long before starters came out. Because my boyfriend and I are pigs, we started off the dinner with bruschetta and cheesy garlic bread. The bruschetta was absolutely divine, with toasted bread and fresh bright red tomatoes on top. I've never had a bruschetta that made me want to literally have that as a meal (aka order about 5 more servings of it). The cheesy garlic bread was pretty tasty as well. Across the board, the family ordered a wide variety of things. Some ordered the shaved meats and olives plate, some ordered the stuffed mushrooms, some ordered prawns and chorizo, some ordered garlic bread. Because my boyfriends sister in law ordered cheesy garlic bread and they brought out plain garlic bread instead, the plain garlic bread was given to us for free while she waited for her cheesy garlic bread. Class. For the mains, we all ordered a little bit of everything off the menu. I went with penne with tomato sauce and spicy Italian sausage. It's been a very long time since I've had proper Italian sausage, so I was well up for this meal. It was very delicious. My boyfriend ordered the calzone with chips. Ha! His older brother ordered the exact same thing. This thing was enormous, filled with everything but the kitchen sink. They both were in hog heaven! There was a mac and cheese ordered, a spinach and ricotta pasta dish ordered, veal, sea brine, risotto and pizza were all ordered as well. I don't think I heard one complaint from the whole table as we wolfed down our food. The wait staff was really nice and patient with us being such a large group. Service was prompt and food was hot made to order. The only thing I wasn't a fan of was the diet coke was flat. I didn't send it back though, so how would they have known. Anyway, we were all beyond stuffed when half of us ordered coffees/tea dessert. I didn't order any of either of those things, but those of us who did order, were well chuffed with the taste and quality of the desserts and coffees. All in all we had a really great night at Bar Leo. I'd never been here before, having only been to Linlithgow once before, but I will definitely come back here again as the food, service and over all atmosphere of Bar Leo was pretty amazing. Tiny shop front on the main street which extends a long way back to give a generously sized dining room. Lovely, modern decor, subdued without being dark or dingy. Mixture of booths and tables which I imagine would suffice for most. Enthusiastic and friendly staff. Some may consider them a little too ernest but never pushy or intrusive. Food is simple, standard Italian restaurant fare. But what makes them stand out is that it is exceptionally well executed, especially the deserts. Seems very popular, they took three or four phone bookings for Friday evening while we had our lunch there on Wednesday. My family of six adults and one infant was on a recent trip to Linlithgow And we ordered take out food one evening. Everyone enjoyed their meal so much, that we decided to use the restaurant the following night to dine in. Upon arrival there was a friendly greeting, and a quick response to get a high chair for the baby. We ordered starters of bruschetta, garlic bread and a meat board that was enjoyed by all. Our main entrees were pasta dishes, and pizza, and the restaurant was accommodating with an allergy request. Once again, we all enjoyed our meal, the portion size, and especially the taste. The service was efficient with the staff all working together with taking our order, brining out drinks, running out food, and clearing off the table. We all agreed that of gentleman in charge, went out of his way to make customers feel welcome. The restaurant even all joined in to sing Happy Birthday to a patron! Great restaurant whether it's for a pizza with kids or a full evening in a large group. Everything is fresh, Pizzas are good nice dough, but if there is veil on the specials it is amazing. Friendly staff always accommodating and welcoming. read more

I just think it is always a nice atmosphere the handful of times I have visited Bar Leo. Some times we have wine and nibbles others the full dinner menu, I am yet to be dissapointed with anything and If ....and its a big If..I were to be,I am sure the attentative staff there would be on hand to change it. The portions are large, the liver starter was more like a large main. I've had veal, steak and fish all have been delicious and I've yet to try a bad wine there. A lovely little Italian restaurant located on Linlithgow High street. They produce lovely pizza and their pasta is lovely.

Fairly conventional menu with a few specials that change daily. The food always seems fresh. Nicely decorated and well kept, it's a bit bigger than it looks from the outside. Attracts families, groups and couples but the layout accommodates the different wants of these groups well. Price wise it's ont he border between three and four "pounds" on the price range review. Last time we were there(August 2010) a three course meal for two with one glass of wine and two soft drinks was £52 plus tip. read more

I avoided this place after we were over-charged on our bill for a pretty mediocre lunch. The staff apologised but the 'mistake' was such that it could only have been deliberate. In any case, decided to give this another try after a lapse of about four months. The squid was from frozen and greasy with no cripsness and the whitebate lacked flavour and was under-cooked. The salad was not really a salad but some lettuce with diced carrots (hardly an Italian speciality). My wife, who is Italian, laughed at the so-called 'garlic bread' that was just white toasted plain bread with some olive oil smeared on it. It was burnt on the under-side and they tried to hide it by turning it burnt-side down. We sent it back and it came back as simply half toasted bread and white on one side. The waiter was ashamed but laughter issued from the kitchen. The prices for the drinks seem to be made up on the spot and we paid £4-95 for a small bottle of Peroni! The cooler for the ice-cream was dirty and light revealed long greasy smear marks on the glass - the prepared sweets looked soggy and old-needless to say I did not order a desert.
