Actually, you should try the entire Menu not just the specials. That's what we ended up doing. Fortunately they were located just a block away which made it so convenient for us. Love that they are dog friendly in the bar and the outside area. Warm and cozy environment with lots of history to read about. We will miss this place.

They are proud of their namesake, which centres on the story of the black greyhound of Linlithgow, whose master was imprisoned on an island in the middle of the nearby Loch and sentenced to starve to death. Everyday the greyhound swam out to her master with food and ended up saving his life. The locals call themselves 'Black Bitches' after the dogs symbolic loyalty. A great local, if quiet, tavern serving a range of real ales. It also has a nice beer garden. Apparently there is a folk music night every third Sunday of the month too.

Apart from the bizarre cross-burning moniker, there's not too much to get excited about. A few years back my cronies and I would come out in Linlithgow quite a bit as we begun to look for a more serene nightlife experience. The Bitch wasn't always on our radar, but on the occasions we did come in it was perfectly adequate.

It's just one very modestly proportioned room, and they don't serve food (except nibbles). It's a station boozer, but a good one. There are three guest ales on offer, plus the usual assortment of lagers and other drinks. Most local patrons will be sitting at the bar, chatting with the elderly owner. Since I wasn't a local and the Scottish accents at the bar were wee heavy, I chose to sit at one of the small tables and observe the conversation. The owner is friendly and forthcoming, the beers are well maintained. The decor won't win Platform 3 any design awards, but everything that you'll need is there, including WCs - accessible *directly* from the bar room. It's just that small a pub.

I had a mixed experience really. When I went in everyone looked pretty unfriendly and the bar staff didn't seem eager to serve. But once I had been there for a while they seemed to perk up a bit. I still felt a bit uncomfortable however. The beer I had was a bit of a let down unfortunately. However the pub food they serve was surprisingly a touch above the rest. My only complaint was that it took a while to arrive. But once it did it I was a little more impressed by it than the usual pub affair. Supposedly the pub is under new management after a spate of awful owners who really let the place go to ruin. Maybe it' still recovering from those dark days. I would certainly like to revisit and have a more consistent experience.

That's where we were absolutely sold: they presented us with the BEST mac & cheese I think I've just about ever had. It came with a salad (also delicious) and garlic bread, and we had chips as well. Plenty of car parking space and, once inside, a very friendly welcome from behind the bar. Service couldn't be beaten. Drinks came promptly and, unusual for a pub, table service. Scampi and chips were ordered by us both and the quantity that arrived was so surprising for the price. OK, maybe it is because we are used to being fleeced dry in the south but we both noticed the quantity and pricing above Watford Gap is so significant. The Swan Tavern is a small town traditional pub with a local clientele but welcoming to tourists. When I popped in for a quick drink the staff were friendly and the other customers quite chatty. The pub could do with a lick of paint. It's beginning to look a little run down and some refurbishment could really pull this place back up. Notably they have a good ale selection, although ale seems to be something Linlithgow does well. In the back is a pretty sizable beer garden which seems to be in a perfect spot, and I enjoyed sitting out soaking the sun during my visit.
