Stumbled upon bar bete online and based on reviews decided to give it a shot and so glad we did. My husband and I both agreed that this was one of our favorite meals in Brooklyn. Amazing service, the people here are so nice. The food is delicious too and well portioned. The yellow cake however is overrated in my opinion. The components were delicious but the chocolate frosting is overwhelming and drowns out the natural flavor of the cake. Loud flavors in a quiet space Dish after dish came out swinging with punchy, bold taste. This is probably appropriate for a restaurant whose lineage descends from a bar: the small plates menu is really all overgrown bar snacks; you need heat, acid and salt to keep up with the alcohol. Nothing even slightly forgettable seemed to be allowed out of that kitchen. The curried cashews show that Bar Bête knew what it's doing; it's elevated above just spicy bar-snack nuts; hot, sour cashews are doused in curry powder, but then accompanied by fried whole curry leaves, whose crisp, wafery consistency provided a great contrast to the meatiness of the nuts. Soft cheese with bread? Bar Bête insists on feta with pickled blueberries and tarragon, paired with hunks of pillowy sourdough. A leek vinaigrette with hazelnuts was my friend's standout, but I thought the little salad dressed with fronds of dill was even better. The ricotta gnudi was my least favorite, but I can't complain; it was smoky, cheesy and comforting. The yellow cake dessert had a rich squelch of thick black chocolate frosting on top and the tang of coarse sea salt; it was so big that it had to be laid on its side. They just don't do subtle here. As a meal, it's relentlessly interesting, if a little much. Ironically, the ambiance might be the one part of Bar Bête that DOES actually do subtlety: a sun-splashed interior with big windows and a minimalist aesthetic that isn't too slick to be approachable, along with friendly, smart service. No cutesy irony or pat theme, nothing that will get in the way of some wine with friends. I came perilously close to five stars for Bar Bête; I'm not sure why I held back. Overall, the meal was good. What I'm having the most difficulty with in writing this review is that it just wasn't overall super memorable and didn't seem to have a distinct identity. Started with the tuna toast. Not typically my vibe but this was a cannot miss and easily the best dish of the night. Duck fat potatoes also wasn't something we would typically ordered and these were...okay. A strange amount of aioli for the amount of potatoes and I wasn't totally sure what to do with it. Also on the saltier side for a spread to be put on top of fried food. We grabbed the little salad. This was also .... fine. Shallot crisps on top could be a nice addition but it also just made the dish a bit salty. For mains: ricotta gnudi was... theme of the night...fine. A little thick rather than creamy and the sauce a skosh too buttery. Finally, the sea bream. I truly do not understand the addition of cooked grapes... The fish was cooked nicely. Good food, fine vibes. Tables pretty close together so I knew everything anyone around us was eating and talking about. I didn't think there was much else on the menu I was interested in trying. The staff is extremely friendly. I went here 2 times over 3 months apart and the bartender remembered me and my sister and asked about a trip we took that we mentioned before. This has been on my list since late last year after I saw an instagram post. My sister beat me to here and only had raving reviews. We made a reservation for two for 6:30pm. It wasn't too busy but it was also pouring out so I'm sure it's usually really busy. I really appreciated the hand towels in the bathroom. At first I was surprised by the limited cocktail menu. I got the DARK. It was done so well that I could see how it's better to have a few amazing cocktails than several average ones. It was also a plus that the cocktail was only 15 dollars. My partner and I shared the following: 1) Duck fried potatoes - expertly fried which came with a large aioli dipping sauce. There was no way that one could finish all the sauce, but I felt challenged to. 2) Tuna toast - we both thought this was the best plate of the evening. It had different flavors of garlic, and spice than the usual soy sauce/sesame oil with the tuna flavor still resonating. 3) Little salad - we needed a vegetable dish. I thought it was a little too mustard forward. 4) Ricotta gnudi - If I knew gnudi was a thing, I would always choose it over gnocchi. It's softer and more pillowy and made perfect the delicious corn, sea urchin butter sauce. 5) Spiced swordfish - Not a bad option for the main protein dish. Excited to try the others 6) Creme brulee - Not the best creme brulee, but definitely satisfied our sweet tooth. The crispy caramel was almost too crispy and was nearly impenetrable. This is such an underrated spot that deserves to be on everyone's list. Starting with the tuna toast. Fresh fish tossed in fermented chili with a fragrant chive spread. So much flavor in one bite If I had to choose one dish, it's the liver parfait. The earthy richness of the chicken liver is paired beautifully with the sweetness of the stewed peach. It's buttery & creamy, just beyond words. Also these toasts are massive and last the whole dinner. Duck fat potatoes - also amazing. I've been hearing about Bar Bete for the past couple years (the opened Dec 2019...) but came for the first time this past weekend. We got here at 9:30 PM on Friday, and the restaurant was fully busy. The service was really great. The manager in the server were really attentive the entire time. We had a nice table with a good amount of space surrounding us, I didn't feel too cramped, but cozy. We started with the tuna toast, and had the goose fat potatoes, the clams, and the salad. Literally, everything was amazing. The tuna toast was so beyond delicious. Everything from the freshness of the fish, the perfect balance of flavor, and the sourdough bread. Literal perfection. We heard a table next to us who was sat at 10 PM that they ran out of tuna toast... Tragic. We kept it light and didn't try any of the main proteins, but the sea bass looked amazing. We finished with the yellow cake, which you must also do. I love the mix of highbrow / lowbrow food, and this was the perfect bite. I caught myself laying in bed at midnight wishing I had another bite of the yellow cake. OK, not to go on and on about the tuna... But it was the best thing I've eaten this month at least. Their menu changes from time to time, I look forward to trying all the new dishes soon. The one thing I will mention, the restaurant is so loud. Well this is a bit of a tough review for me. I came here for my birthday dinner about a month back and was disappointed. The service was solid and the vibes were A+ but the food was tough. Here's the thing.... If you order any of these dishes by themselves they are great HOWEVER I wanted to order a little bit of everything and all of the dishes had the same exact flavor profile which was just an absurd amount of salt. It was one of the saltiest meals I've ever had. We ordered the Liver Parfait, Tuna toast, leek vinaigrette, duck fat potatoes and the ricotta gnudi. If I only ordered one of the dishes, I may have enjoyed it but as the courses kept coming it just got worse and worse. There was no break from the salt. It was a festival filled with so much salt. I didn't even intend on ordering this food but the waitress was set on telling me my original order wouldn't be nearly enough. PRO TIP: if you come here, don't let the waiters upsell you. Only order 1 or 2 things and grab a drink because the atmosphere is very pleasant. I would not recommend this restaurant if you are looking for a big meal, maybe just a quick bite. We finally made it on Friday with a 1.5 hour wait, but passed time at Barely Disfigured with a nice cocktail. Faves: - oysters: already dressed with chili oil and lemon so you don't have to squeeze yourself. They're quite pricey at $4 each, but a nice starter - chicken liver parfait: still thinking about this dish. It's served with incredibly thick BUT AIRY/LIGHT pieces of bread. It's not only pate, but also with pistachio butter and prune jam. DROOOOL - duck fat potatoes: this was recommended by our server and apparently one of the dishes they're known for. i can def see why - yellow cake: I was very hesitant to get this, but glad we tried! It's a classic yellow cake with DOLLOPS of dark chocolate frosting and sea salt. I started with the chicken liver pâté, which was actually quite good--rich and well-prepared. The fried potatoes were okay, but heavily salted. The salad was overly salty and lacked freshness. The biggest letdown was the sea bass, which was borderline inedible due to how salty it was. For the price point and reputation, I expected much better execution. My husband and I got the tuna toast, duck fat potatoes, anchovy and French butter terrine, and Spanish mackerel. It was a super hot day so I got a chilled red wine and he got a white wine. Great pairings with the food! The tuna toast and duck fat potatoes were some of the best dishes I've eaten all year!! The tuna was perfectly seasoned with a chili oil type sauce and on top of crispy toast. The duck fat potatoes were so light, airy, and crispy! Although it is on the expensive side, this place is a must-try. The decor is beautiful and casual in an elevated way. The waitstaff is very knowledgeable and gave us recommendations based on our tastes. The food is great and the menu is set up to share (if you want), but the real star of the show is the yellow cake on the dessert menu. I am not a cake person. I'm also generally not a dessert person. Bar Bete!!! How you absolutely blew me away (but wait - only 4 stars?? This is a tale of two dining experiences. Stay tuned below). To those perusing the menu and saying, salad? Foie gras? Leeks? Why the fuss? Their menu is a masterclass in underselling because everything is PHENOMENAL here. Each dish has some surprise element that just makes it pop. A little horseradish or dill in the gem salad, a streak of rhubarb jam in the parfait....just incredible. One quibble with Bar Bete: cocktails, please! Sexy ones. With only 2 hum-drum drinks on the menu, they are more or less discouraging the cocktail drinks from bothering, but the wines by the glass were all just fine (we had quite a few between us and, well, I would have preferred a well-orchestrated cocktail to whet our appetites). No matter: the star of the show is truly the excellent plates. Try many: they are all incredible. So, why only 4 stars? We dined a second time at Bar Bete last night and it was pretty darn miserable. Yes, the food was still excellent, but this apparently is the difference between a Tuesday night in the Spring (first time dining) and a Saturday night in Summer (last night). Here goes: Loved Bar Bete but probably won't return for a weekend dinner until they can do something about the heat/blinding light in the front of the restaurant and catastrophically loud sound in the space. It's impossible to hear your dining companions even when shouting. Even worse, the restaurant does not have any shades on the windows or sufficient air conditioning and the entire front space was in nuclear strength white hot light for the first hour of our meal. Ruined our dinner with friends: we were covered in sweat since the air was insufficient for a hot evening. Everyone around us was fanning themselves or just letting it drip. We were so excited to bring our friends for dinner and we all agreed the food is fantastic but we will not return in the summer as the restaurant is not equipped to handle the light and heat, nor will we return on a weekend due to the head-splitting sound. I recommend anyone who visits in the Summer to make a note on their reservation to request a table in the back as anything up front will leave you so uncomfortable it will be hard to enjoy your meal. read more

This review is an embarrassingly long time in coming. I would like to apologize to Bar Bête and to every one of my three faithful readers for not having extolled the virtues of this gorgeous, outstanding restaurant sooner. I love this place. I love Bar Bête so much that after having dined here twice immediately after they opened, I contacted them to plan a big birthday dinner for my wife (because not only is the food incredible, the service is also friendly and perfect). Unfortunately, it was March of 2020, and the stupid, stupid world got in the way. We left town for a while, had another stupid baby, and haven't gotten a chance to eat at Bar Bête again until recently (it's not really a baby-bringing place IMO). On Friday, we finally made it back for our first meal without either kid since the new one arrived, and our first restaurant meal indoors since the pandemic started. It was everything I ever hoped it could be. We started with cocktails (the White, Dark, and Citrus are all excellent, but the Citrus fits this heat wave we're in right now best...and yes, I tried them all), ordered most of the menu, and then drank entirely too much wine. Best of all, the food is exactly as stunning as I remember....both in flavor, and appearance. (Second best of all, not a single child interrupted my enjoyment of the evening.) The menu has changed entirely since our last visit (unsurprising, as it was over a year ago), but there wasn't a miss amongst the dishes we ordered. The summer squash toast was seasonally perfect; there was serious skill involved in the charcoal salmon cookery (love the cherry agrodolce); the flank steak brochette was a beautiful marriage of beef and bleu cheese; despite everyone else at the table being uninterested, the rabbit and crawfish sausage was amazing, with the tasso ham and vermouth sauce reminding me of New Orleans in the best way. And no one is ever sad about crispy duck fat potatoes. All that said, my three favorite bites of the evening were: 1. Shockingly, the Little Salad. Something about the heat has me craving fresh vegetables, and the kitchen here deserves all the accolades for the mushrooms a la greque, crispy shallots & mustard vinaigrette that make this a serious winner. 2. Again, I was blown away that a savory-leaning lad such as myself was so enamored with the Strawberry Sundae. It may be that I was drunk on orange wine at this point, but candied fennel? Streusel? Vanilla ice cream? Perfect. 3. The chilled scallop. In my opinion, the most eye-popping plate amidst many, and the best. The crustacean vinaigrette providing a gorgeous orange backdrop for the snap peas, fennel, and simplicity of the scallops. A little hint of chile, and we were drinking this dish down. Downsides of this meal? If any, it's that the menu changes, and they no longer have the mushroom brioche I remember well, nor the clam soup. Thankfully, they've got new and delicious items all over this menu, and they may have other new and delicious items next time we make it in. Which will be as soon as possible. read more

Such a great place!! I will say we had to wait even though we had a reservation, but besides that we had no issues with the service at all. The restaurant itself is super cute and tucked away in Cobble Hill. The drink menu is cute with only 3 cocktails and a variety of wine. They recommended we order 2-3 dishes per person and eat family style. Everything was delicious but our table favorites were the tuna toast, the leeks, and the steak. We found the duck fat potatoes the most underwhelming. We also ordered both their desserts, the cake with chocolate frosting and the strawberry shortcake. The strawberry shortcake was great until we got to the clumps of cream cheese, which weren't particularly pleasant. The cake was delicious, but you definitely can't eat more than 2-3 bites. This review is long overdue. Earlier this summer, I was getting birthday drinks along Smith Street and my friend suggested we get dinner. I'd passed by Bar Bete a bunch but it was always full or I was in a rush. No better time than a birthday celebration to splurge a little. Luckily, no wait on a weeknight (plus outdoor seating was available since it was the summer). Honestly, one of the best meals I've had all year. Everything was delicious, beautifully plated, and just a mix of all the best flavors. Among my favorite things were: - the chicken liver parfait with pistachios and stewed rhubarb - anchovy butter - duck fat potatoes with garlic aioli - caramelized duck They also serve the best bread ever. I would recommend everyone go just for the duck fat potatoes. I don't care if you're vegan. I don't care if you have high cholesterol. Just go. And. Eat. Them. I also recommend doing family style like we did. Just get a bunch of smaller plates and share them all. Their wine selection is also top notch. Lots of chilled reds (my favorite on a summer day), organic wines, and oranges. Staff was great. All around one of the more memorable dining experiences of 2022! I saw a recommendation for this place on Tiktok and the food looked very interesting so i thought let's give it a try. And I'm super super glad I did! Everyday they have a different menu so I was stoked to see so many good options on the day I went. Island Creek Oysters: They had chili oil so had a small kick but were super fresh and a great start to the meal Duck Fat Potatoes: Everyone was recommending these and now I get why. You might think how good could potatoes be but they just are. Jonah Crab Toast: I originally wanted the Tuna Toast and was sad when I didn't see it on the menu but am So So happy with this, probably my favorite part of the meal. Crunchy yet soft where it needs to be and filling. Steamed Clams: Good portion, love the combination of bacon bits & crème fraîche and miso Black bass: Cooked perfectly with a crispy top layer with crunchy roe and whatever sauce that is, is so good. We were nearly licking the plate. I loved the ambience as well, it's large enough to not feel cramped and accommodate enough people but also still has an intimate vibe. There's an open kitchen where you can see the chefs making the food. There's still so much I want to try here from that tuna toast to rabbit sausage to vol au vent so I'll definitely be coming back. read more

French bar with modern yet comfortable feel. Nice selection of wines, beers, spirits, and cocktails. Bar seated about seven and most of the tables fitted groups of two to four. We dined in on a Wednesday night and we're seated at the bar. Service from the bartender was great. He was attentive and friendly. Kept the bar very clean so the area felt spacious. We decided to order tapas style. We shared the oysters, curry cashews, chicken liver pâté, tuna toast, duck fat potatoes, leek vinaigrette salad, and the swordfish. Most of the dish were on the savory side. I loved how the oysters were prepared with a couple drops of chili oil and a bit of mignonette. I'd definitely recommend a couple to get your meal started. Chicken liver was another one of my favorite plates. Great consistency and it was served with some fresh sour dough bread, a pistachio butter, and a jam. We had family visiting from out of town and was excited to try bar bete. It was very cute inside, but unfortunately it was a let down. We were a group of 7 and our server Ryan told us that for parties of our size, he recommended family style for ordering. A few of us ordered drinks. Maybe he thought our family liked to drink more than eat, but we don't drink much. We tend to enjoy food more than drinking. Our waiter's face fell when we didn't order more wine. We ordered based on his recommendation, however, most of us left still pretty hungry and had to grab food at a nearby deli. We couldn't even order more food since he said for parties our size we need to order everything at once in the beginning. It was really sad to try to divide each entree into 7 portions. And once he saw our family didn't drink his demeanor fell flat. We would have been happy to have all ordered our own entrees each, plus all the shared appetizers, which would've left us full and not so miffed. I would prob recommend this place as a cute date night spot instead of for a large group. Food was alright. We ordered duck fat fries, tuna toast, scallop crudo, leek vinaigrette, rabbit lobster sausage, black cod, chicken leg. Portions would've been fine for an individual, but not for group. read more

This place is EXCELLENT. For NYC, the prices are very reasonable for the qualify of food, service, and drink you get. Tuna toast is unreal. One of my favorite dishes The little salad is a true sleeper. It's one of those salads you keep thinking about (which is rare) The entrees I've had here have all been excellent as well. If I have ONE qualm, it's with their yellow cake. It's good, don't get me wrong. But it's overrated. It's a pretty dry yellow cake with a really good dark chocolate frosting. The cake itself is dry. It's a fact. But I still like it. The place is good enough to warrant 5 stars from the apps and drinks alone. Food is fantastic read more

Yeah, we're down. The food here was absolutely wonderful. Shockingly good, in fact, in almost every respect. To the point where we interrupted our meal just to order more food even though we already had more than enough to satisfy three people (it was only the two of us). So, without further adjective, here's what we loved: the chickpea crepe and the crispy potatoes. I know- just typical bar potatoes right? Don't miss this version. What we really, really liked- the chicken and crispy fish. Someone here has an excellent palate. 'Nuff said. What was also quite good- the rolled omelette. Perfect execution, if not a bit expected. My only complaint was even though the restaurant was quite cute, sitting by the window on a cold night made the ambient temperature a bit chillier than what we would have liked. Also, even though we were five minutes late they told us it would be another 20 minutes before our table would be ready. Turned out it only took five minutes, but still...
