Drinks were great, food was delicious! The pasta is made from scratch and really makes the food outstanding here. One note: their pasta menu is designed in the traditional way where pasta is a small/medium sized course before a meat entree, so the portion size may seem small compared to some other Italian places. Keep in mind it's handmade pasta though so quality over quantity. But I will say I was very content with the pasta portion size after sharing a couple appetizers with the person I was with, especially since they serve complimentary fresh bread and dipping oil as well. We have had dinner at Avalon several times and it was always okay. Tonight, we found the place to be extremely loud and the service to be inconsistent. My wife ordered a mint julip but had to send it back. The then ordered a martini extra dry with a twist, but it came dirty (olive juice) We had to ask if our drink orders were ready well after our appetizers were served. The really bad part was they brought the wrong food to our table, then the wrong order. They had to totally reconstruct the order for one of us. We were charged for the drink and our total w/tip was over $100. Not worth the hassle, the noise and the poor service. read more

My daughter and her friends, all 16 year olds, were looking forward to enjoying a nice dinner together. Unfortunately, it took almost 2 hours to get their food. Their waiter, a red haired guy with glasses, kept telling them telling them their food was "on the way". They asked to speak to the manager on 2 separate occasions and both times the waiter said she was busy but would come to the table shortly. Turns out he never talked to the manager. We had noon reservations for Mother's Day. After waiting for more than 20 minutes, and seeing other groups before and after us get seated, I complained to the hostess. She told me, "Feel free to go somewhere else." Really? That's how you're going to treat your customers? I understand it's Mother's Day but you don't talk your customers like that. So we did go somewhere else, were seated immediately, and thoroughly enjoyed our meal. We will never go back to Avalon. read more

Stopped in for happy hour on a Friday night. Sat at the bar with with great bartenders. Had the happy meat balls and calamari wow yum. Beautiful place and atmosphere with delish food. Really liked the old Avalon better. Wanted to like this place but things that really bothered us was the ATTITUDE of everyone there. They have this fantastic bar drink menu but when you order one of the pricey drinks you have to practically beg the bartender to make it for you. God forbid you want a second or if you order one from the inept young guy bartender. They have Stella on special but they frequently run out of it. The owner walks around not even considering saying hello to customers. Bring back the old Avalon and attitude. Everyone here gives you the feeling that you are a nuisance. Till they change, my girlfriend and I will stick with Limoncello. At least they have ULTRA friendly bartenders and the managers appreciate your being there which is why they don't need drink or food gimmicks to draw people in. read more

We were disappointed when we went last weekend. At the old location the place was so great. This was our first time at the new location for dinner. We had only had drinks at the Gay St. location before. We had a reservation made weeks in advance, but waited for over half an hour for our table. Then when we were finally seated, the service was not good. Drinks took a while, and the entrees took forever. Good thing the group had a lot to catch up on. And when trying to order, they were out of items that were regulars on the menu. It seemed everywhere we turned we were met with things being sold out - mussels, wine, entrees. The food was good. Jazz band playing in the entry area, nice atmosphere in their new bar area, not one meal or appetizer out of about 20 was even average let alone disappointing. My husband and I recently moved to the area from the city. After a decade there, we are accustomed to many different restaurant styles and atmospheres. However, the experience we had at Bar Avalon in West Chester is unlike anything I have ever experienced. Shortly into our appetizer course the table in front of us had been cleared and a new group sat down. While we appreciate a fun, loud restaurant, this group was extremely inappropriate. They were so loud they were yelling over each other to be heard, cursing, and screeching. Shortly after sitting down, they were recognized by friends at the bar, and said friends joined them for a bit. Everyone stood up around the table and the group was even more loud and rude. The group did not seem to take the subtle hints of everyone around them glancing at them for so rudely interrupting their meals. My brother-in-law eventually got up to use the restroom and spoke to a group of staff members about the table. Our server came over and asked if we wanted to move tables. Not her fault, but the table we were to be moved to was two tables away - it would not have made a difference and we were halfway through our main course. This table then received a wine tasting, were offensive again, but then received food and quieted down a little. Once they ate their apps, the distastefulness started up again. At this point, I asked our server if I could speak to the manager. At the same time, one of the females at the table flung her arms back so fast that she almost hit my brother-in-law. My brother-in-law and husband both asked the table to calm down. One of the males at the table said, "oh, are we bothering you?", my husband said "yes, you are being extremely rude". The manager came over at that time. He asked "Is there a problem?" (Management 101, this is not how you address patrons!) My husband said "yes, this table next to us is causing a scene". The manager said, "well, we offered to move your table", and then he had the audacity to tell my husband that he was the one causing the scene. (My agreeable, non-confrontational husband... causing the scene? Yes, my husband did raise his voice in that moment, but we were not causing the scene.) I stepped in and asked the manager if he could just speak to other table. Instead of even asking them to quiet down, he only asked them to stop cursing. Clearly the manager was of no help, so instead of ordering desserts for my husbands birthday, we asked for our bill at that time. Over $200 for the worst experience. (We gave our server her full 20% tip, we did not ask to have the bill adjusted for the experience, nor was it.) The worst part about this is that as since it was my husband's birthday, we were looking for a fun night out without our young child. Management should have stepped up and addressed this table before they even had put an order in, or if not then, when my brother-in-law had spoken to the staff members about the table. Food: okay, wine list: terrible (small list, not great wines, they ran out of the bottle we ordered, markup at 400+%), management: offensive, ineffective, shameful. Experience: horrible. Not sure how anyone can condone running a business in such a manner. read more

Had a reservation on a Saturday night, was seated promptly and attended to soon after we sat down. The environment here is terrible. Awful lighting, furniture, carpet that looks like it belongs in someone's basement. I'd have thought they would have udpated the decor once it turned over from Nonni's to Avalon, but they didn't. It is very very loud, which doesn't really bother me. For the price point, I'd rather go to a nicer looking place. We got the "Meat and Cheese" board which was great, but overpriced (around $30) and 2 pasta dishes. It was just eh. read more

We were underwhelmed. We came expecting a good range of vegetarian and non-vegetarian options, as per the normal menu, but the Christmas even menu didn't have a single vegetarian main dish on it! I would then have expected the chef to be able to whip up something fairly easily, but my vegetarian pasta was very disappointing - it was essentially noodles in a soup of olive oil and white wine, and I could have made something better myself. The rest of the food my family got was tasty, but all overpriced for the quantity. The cheese board looked like leftovers thrown together. read more

My wife and I dined here last night. I read a few reviews before we made our reservation. Here are my thoughts on our experience: First - Here is a question: Do restaurants actually honor reservations? My theory is that they take reservations simply to get a sense of how much business they should anticipate that night. It seems to be more of a luxury for the management instead of the diner. Of course, we waited 25 minutes for a table after we arrived at our reservation time. BUT....not a complaint. Just an observation. We were not in a hurry so all was good. We decided to head to the bar for a glass of wine. Bartender was very friendly and helpful. He had us try a couple for different wines before we made our selection. It was a nice touch. Unfortunately, there was a band playing in the bar. Music was good. But deafening loud. We could barely hear the bartended.....and certainly could not engage in conversation. For the life of me, I can't figure out why a restaurant would have something so loud and ear piercing. We were finally seated and greeted by the wait staff. I read some reviews commenting on how unfriendly the service was. Could not disagree more. We found the entire staff to be friendly, social, knowledgeable of the menu and specials, etc. Enhanced the experience. Our food was great. Grilled calamari was awesome. Tender and flavorful. We both went with Pasta dishes. The sausage in my dish was incredibly tender. The flavor of both dishes were great. All in all - a great experience. I really like the atmosphere of the room itself. Only complaint is that they need to do something about the music. A soloist is one thing. But a four piece band (with drums) in a room that size just does not work. I would certainly check the live music schedule before deciding to dine here. read more

Went to Avalon last night for dinner after not having been there for almost 9-12 months. At their former location, this was hands-down my husband's and my favorite date night restaurant. The food was amazing, the atmosphere was romantic and we were never disappointed. Sorry to say, I don't think we will be going there again after last night. The food was fine and the drinks were ok. The service was great. The restaurant was not very full with guests, yet my husband and I had a really hard time hearing each other because the acoustics are really poor and the sound was traveling like crazy. I was very unimpressed by the menu. Their old menu had tons of interesting options and their current menu looks like something from a bistro. They had 3 different kinds of fries and around 5 different kinds of pizza on the menu, but barely any seafood or pasta options - not my thing. It looked like something from a chain restaurant. I wound up settling on something although there was nothing that sounded appealing. Perhaps this change was intentional, but I loved Avalon the way it was. They were a step above many of the other restaurants in West Chester, but now they seem just like the rest. Nothing special :( Bummer! read more

I had reservations for Valentines day and had to call and cancel 45 minutes prior because of bad weather and would up being charged $60 because I could not come and they then told me that I could alleviate the $60 charge if I came to dinner in the next 4 days. I work in town on High Street and my wife and I were looking forward to coming to dinner. What a terrible way to do business. We had a disappointing dinner here on Saturday. From the beginning, the service staff were overwhelmed (but nice, and apologetic), despite the dining room not being full. Although they had almost an identical drink on the menu, they could not make the drink I ordered. Drinks took forever to arrive, which didn't go unnoticed by the table next door, who were more vocal than we were. Apparently the bartender called out. The servers practically ran through the dining room, which was already too loud and hectic to have a nice meal. I don't know where they were running to, since we didn't see our server almost the entire meal. The bread they bring for the table is rubbery (you could buy better at Acme!!) and served with the worst quality olive oil; they should be embarrassed, as an Italian restaurant. The pasta on the specials menu was tough, and the menu is WAAAY over-priced for the portions and quality they're serving. God help you if you order that $20 (!!) glass of Chardonnay... We ordered a glass of wine when our food was brought out, but we were done the meal when it finally arrived. On top of everything, they charged our credit card twice! read more
