From my seat I could see sushi being prepared and the daily workings and prep. The seating is deceiving as there are 2 seperate sections of the restaurant. Service was a bit slow even sitting at the bar and my water glass was never refilled even when asked but I'll chalk it up to a busy Friday. Will definitely be back!

Unlike others, we felt the portions were not too small. Overall a very respectable dinner showing from Almanac. I kind of regret ordering a pre fixed cocktail because his Omakase was so on point to what he asked for and was delicious. I love rhubarb and Gin is my usual spirt of choice, so I didn't want to pass up the Hanamachi Rikki, but while I found the tart rhubarb refreshing, it fell flat when placed next to the Omakase. While I enjoyed the music choices, he did not and it was also INCREDIBLY dark/moody which isn't our preference, but makes sense for the intimate vibe they are clearly going for.

I guess I shouldn't be surprised, since they are located right about Ogawa (also amazing)! We tried the omakase cocktail, which was really fun and creative. Although if I'm paying $25 for a drink, I do expect a bit more of a presentation... The scallop crispy rice was absolutely a favorite, we had to order two! The toro was also a standout, although how can you go wrong with toro, uni, and caviar? The wagyu dog itself was great, but the roll it was on was dry. In my opinion, the bread makes or breaks a sandwich, so points off for that one. The ambiance was cozy, if a little dark at times. Our waitress was knowledgeable and attentive and gave us good recommendations on what to order. I will absolutely be back for the crispy rice alone!

Seating was pretty prompt, and a menu was provided - I ordered: +2 rolls of California maki rolls +and, a Chicken Karaage The rolls were well-made, although the lettuce threw me off; it was fresh, and the avocado was perfectly ripened! The karaage, on the other hand, was way too large for me, so it did freak me out; the spicy mayo sauce that it was served with did complement the chicken well. I just wished they used white meat cut into small pieces, as they were all dark. Service was a bit of a miss - it was difficult getting drink refills and getting the check to pay. The edamame was standard, and the takoyaki and pan-fried dumplings didn't taste homemade. Rather they both reminded me of what you would pick up at the frozen section at the food market. Nevertheless, they were passable. After all, we were here for the ramen. I opted in for their Terakawa special. The broth was flavourful, and the chashu was the most tender and juicy chashu I've ever had. As for the girlfriend, she opted in for their spicy ramen which was also spectacular. I absolutely loved her wavy noodles. I would have loved to have swapped out my straight noodles for her wavy noodles. They have a nice bounce and slightly chewy texture. Their marinated eggs were to die for. We put in a few extra orders for these. Overall, a great experience. The staff seemed to be right on the ball, and this small and cozy restaurant definitely makes you feel transported to Japan.

My first omakase experience at Ogawa was both memorable and flavorful. Located in the heart of Old…read moreCity, you're welcomed into an intimate 12-person counter with a small seating area in the front. While there isn't a formal coat check, there are designated racks where you can store clothing and belongings. The restaurant shares a space with Almanac, its upstairs cocktail bar. Despite being catered as a social atmosphere, I never felt that its presence (or playlist) disrupted my dining experience. There's service staff moving about the stairwell behind the Ogawa counter, but I felt you can still clearly hear and immerse yourself with the chefs during the meal. I visited with my partner for their Midweek Omakase Experience, which provides an abridged four set, 16-course meal perfect for a date night. This particularly stood out to me, since it's a $250-per couple offering that makes it more affordable and welcoming for veteran diners or first-time omakase enjoyers. The Food Breakdown: First Set (4.5/5) - The appetizer dishes were a great start to our meal. I thoroughly enjoyed the selections of cuts with the pickles on the second plate. The scallop was also seasoned incredibly well, and the brush of soy helped elevate each bite. Second Set (5/5) - Flavors from the chawanmushi helped warm the palette, especially with the chutoro of the bluefin tuna presented in this course. I felt that this set had the greater diversity of textures between bites, which made savoring it more worthwhile. Third Set (4/5) - Miso soup was a great start before we were served delicious otoro cuts of fish. The portion sizes were also excellent, and Chef Andy did a fantastic job describing each bite in full detail. My only note was that I felt the handroll sizes were very slightly inconsistent in their filling. Fourth Set (5/5) - All of the desserts were delicious and light, which made for an excellent closer to the meal. While traditionally omakase ends with a tamago-style dessert, we were also provided a vanilla ice cream and homemade chocolate to round out our experience. Chef Andy was welcoming, knowledgeable at every step of our meal, and demonstrated a clear passion in his preparation of each bite. It was a great and affordable experience for an omakase!

We were seated at the sushi bar, which ended up being one of the best parts of the night. We got to watch the sushi chefs prepare dishes up close and even chat with them a bit, which made the experience feel more personal and fun. I would recommend requesting this if you are a party of one or two. The restaurant itself has a very clean, sleek look, with mostly white decor. It feels modern and upscale without being cold. The space is large enough that it doesn't feel crowded, but still intimate enough for a nice dinner. Our server was fantastic and gave great recommendations for cocktails, sake, and dishes. I tried a sake flight and ended up not enjoying it, and he kindly brought me something else with no issue and didn't charge for the flight, which I really appreciated. The sushi was fresh, and every dish we had was seasoned perfectly. They have seasonal tasting menus if you are more adventurous. The dishes are beautifully plated. Overall, this was a great experience and I'd definitely recommend Morimoto for a higher-end dinner in Philly, especially if you're a fan of TV chefs or just want a memorable sushi experience.

What happened to the real Morimoto?…read more I came here years ago and had an exciting, innovative meal. Today the menu still has those classic old Nobu-inspired dishes from the 1990s - crispy rice with spicy tuna, hamachi carpaccio, miso cod - but there's not much of anything novel. Worse, we made the mistake of ordering a sushi assortment. There were five kinds of fish: cooked shrimp, fluke, salmon, tuna, and yellowtail, just like at any corner sushi joint. The server called the yellowtail kampachi, but it lacked the usual springiness of amberjack; it was just regular hamachi as far as I could tell. And apart from a tiny unidentifiable topping on the fluke, there was nothing special about this fish at all, nor was the rice particularly good. Apart from an inside-out spicy salmon roll, nothing about this said Morimoto. The service was okay (though our main dishes took forever to arrive), and the prices weren't over the top. The decor is a time capsule, just like the menu. Morimoto is phoning it in - could the chef answer the call himself?

The first impression was not especially auspicious. The restaurant is tucked away in the basement beneath a building on Walnut Street in Philadelphia, and at first glance the menu prices gave me pause. I ordered the 9-piece tasting menu with uni for $68, and every single piece of nigiri was exquisite. The fish practically melted in my mouth, with outstanding freshness, texture, and flavor. Each bite felt carefully crafted and perfectly balanced. The service was equally impressive. The staff was warm, cheerful, attentive, and made the entire experience feel welcoming and relaxed. I arrived toward the end of the evening, so the restaurant was pleasantly quiet, which made the meal even more enjoyable. This was truly a memorable dining experience. Every course was exceptional, and I would highly recommend this restaurant to anyone who appreciates outstanding sushi.
