We visited Eugene on a weekend for kids hockey tournament. We stayed in Eugene for two nights only, but came to this restaurant twice. What does this tell you? The food here is amazing! This is our first time to be in this area. We had a very tight schedule for hockey games, so didn't want to spend too much time on eating. We wanted to get something quick, but we didn't want to go for fast food. I did a quick search on Yelp, and found this place. When we came here on a Friday evening, we were surprised to see a packed restaurant and a long waitline. We ordered Special beef noodles, pork dumpling, and ShangHai Steamed Fried BaoZi to go. All of them tasted so delicious! They're authentic! I actually think their dumplings can compete with Din Tai Fung in Seattle. We finished them all quickly and forgot to take a photo. (When the food is so good, I just don't remember to take photos.) Before we left Eugene, we decided to come back here to buy some food to eat on our way home. This time, we ordered pickled beef noodles, Clear broth beef noodles, Shanghai Steamed fried BaoZi, and pork dumplings. For the second time, Shanghai steamed friend BaoZi and pork dumplings are still amazing. These two items are the "must eat" for this restaurant. For beef noodles, I kind of feel that the clear broth beef noddles was too greasy, though the taste was good. However, my husband got a different opinion. He actually liked clear broth beef noodles better than the picked one. He didn't feel it's greasy at all. I preferred the picked beef noodles over the clear broth one. My husband felt the picked one was too sour, but I thought it was just right. Both of us agreed that the special beef noodles was good. Hopefully we will have another chance to visit Eugene! We will definitely come back here to get some dumplings and noodles! read more

My out of town family and I love this place. Visit almost every time we are in Eugene. We have small children and, most recently, the hostess immediately engaged them and fabricated those child-friendly chop stick setups for them from rubber bands and paper. She checked on us constantly and even comped a dish that came out far spicier than we expected. We live near several heavily Chinese cities in suburban LA (Monterey Park, Alhambra, etc) and we have been very happy to find bao and other dishes that measure up. read more

This place is the BOMB. I had Mapo Tofu, a true test of restaurant quality for me, and it was outstanding. (My waitress and I had a convo about this...she felt like authentically this would have even more fire, and I agree, but the Bao Bao version has some spice and some of the characteristic mouth-numb feeling without being too much for the most people. Pretty great.) Also, it was PRETTY...not just tossed out there, it looked great on the serving plate next to a plate of white rice laid out like an art display. I was really excited to try this place after reading all the reviews. I ordered their 2 most popular items "Pork Baos and Beef noodle soup". The soup lacked flavor. I was really disappointed because it needed more spices and to maybe stew a bit longer. The beef was really tender, but the broth needed to be the star. The filling in the pork bao was actually not bad. It had a good flavor. However, the bread itself lacked the fluffy texture. The bottom is pan fried, which I didn't really mind, but the top tasted filmy. :( read more

We enjoyed: - curry beef bao zi: savory, not spicy -pork bao zi just like you would expect -pork steamed dumplings: filling tasted the same as the bao zi, so I recommend getting one or the other -chicken cheese bao zi: ok totally not Chinese mixing dairy and meat but tasty!! Awesome food. Haven't had this type of taste in a while. Would definitely go back 2-3 x a month or more if lived in Eugene.

I live and have been eating all around china for the past +20 years and can confidently tell you that this place is not close to authentic. I don't think they tweaked the menu items to appeal to the local, western palette but are just bad cooks or cutting corners/costs. 1) the "baozi" (水煎包）is supposed to have a nice, crispy bottom. They obviously did not want to spend the time to patiently allow the nice crisp to form on the bottom. The bun itself lacked the proper bounce in texture as a result of different type of flour (i ll give them a pass on that as it may be difficult to buy in eugene). The meat also lacks that bit of juice that usually collects in the inside. 2)pickled beef noodles: the soup doesnt taste like a broth thats been simmering for hours. It just tastes like some powders were thrown in the soup with some picked cabbage (酸菜). But the most offensive part of this dish was the beef. Never in my life have a had such dry and tough beef before! Proper beef noodle soup is supposed to use tender and juicy cuts of beef, not cheap lean cuts of beef. If you're going to us cheap, lean cuts of beef at least put in the time and effort to cook it until its somewhat tender. 3) "special secret made pepper chicken rice": this dish was lazy in that they basically took the soup from the pickled beef noodle and reused it as the base in this dish and then three in some sichuan peppercorn. Nothing special about that. I've never seen anything like this before in the thousands of meals ive had out in china and asia. I do not say that in a good way. The only thing going for any of the food items at this restaurant was the chicken meat in this dish was tender. Frankly, i dont know how this place has excellent reviews from chinese reviewers. I suspect that some may be friends of the restaurant or phantom 1-2 review accounts opened for the purpose of bumping this restaurant up. The waitress was very nice and friendly but i cant give them anything higher than a one star as the food is horrible! read more

Everything was great! I had the special beef noodle soup, the meat was more of a roast beef texture and it was delicious, my husband had the beef rib and rice and it was great to! It was a warm day in Downtown Eugene and I was craving something savory, easy, fast, and tasty. And that's when I remembered that there was the new Boa Boa House. This was my second visit to this location and it was just as satisfying as my first. They have plenty of vegetarian options, which I love. I go for the Veggie Dumpings, pan fried, of course, so I can get that crispy bottom. My husband assures me that their Pork Dumplings are delicious for all you carnivores out there. The restaurant space is also super cute. The walls are decorated with children's artwork and their menus are adorably decorated with hand drawings. This is one of my new Eugene Downtown staples. It is a small space so on popular evenings, like Fridays and Saturdays, you may have to wait a bit, but it will be worth it. read more

As I walked in, I was greeted with a big smile, and a crisply folded bag with my order. Wow! This place was incredible! My friend and I went here for our first time just expecting to eat some bao buns and be chill but we were blown away. We ordered the vegetarian bao buns and the mapo tofu. The flavors in the mapo tofu took us on this incredible journey. Every bite we we were so stunned by a new flavor. We had not been familiar with many of the different spices and it kept us guessing in the best way possible. Amazing. The buns, Oh MY Gosh so fresh and perfect in everyway. Did a takeout order. Food was ready on time, and they had an easy system to pick it up without having to enter the store. The pork bao buns were tasty, and I think contained some soup in the center, which made takeout a little messy, but it was still good. The sweet bean paste buns were a little tough on the outside, and the bread to filling ratio was too high, but would have been tasty otherwise. I think these items might have been more successful if eaten at the restaurant, but it's hard to tell. Only suggestion is to allow some mix and match of bao. Currently you are forced to get six of the same thing, which is inconvenient if you're not eating with multiple people, and prevents you from being able to try several things. This was our second time, we went once before COVID and ate inside, this time we did a pick up from a day of wine tasting. We were indecisive so got the bean paste bao, spicy chicken noodles (cold), wontons in chili oil and shrimp fried rice. They were all wonderful, the chicken noodles were flavor spicy, not heat spicy and having them cold was a nice juxtaposition to the rest of the food.
