Banyan Tree is a well-loved local boutique. They were recently honored as 2025 best women's clothing store. They also happen to be one of the more long-standing local boutiques in the city. I recently dropped in at their Tremont location after walking around in the midst of winter in Tremont, and developing a need for gloves. AMBIANCE: Banyan Tree currently has an inviting window display with a word "Joy." The storefront has two spacious rooms that feel cozy. Inside you'll find wood accents, and a comfy couch to recline while shopping. Checkout is available in the first room as you walk into the space. INVENTORY: The inventory is predominantly women's fashion. You'll find a unifying theme - comforting fabrics, sparkles, and lots of hand-knit accessories. The best way to describe the vibe is lounge chic. The clothes you'll find here will allow you maximum comfort as you venture out in Tremont and beyond. The clothing looks well made and unique while following the latest trends. The prices are on the higher end starting at about $90 something. Accessories are reasonably priced starting at $20 something. I'm not fully satisfied with the clothing inventory because the sizes go up to L and one size. I wear a plus size so I can only drool while looking at the clothing. I wish that I could also shop here and enhance my wardrobe. In that way, sizing is not inclusive. There are also smaller gifts and accessories at the store - journals, books, purses, statues, and more. Few categories have sales - ornaments and summer clothing. The sale is 40% off. MY PURCHASE: I purchased knit gloves from Banyan Tree. The price was $22. The brand is Figwood, was designed by Banyan Tree in Cleveland. It is a brand exclusive to Banyan Tree. It was sustainably produced in Bali. Imagine someone in Bali knitting gloves and knowing nothing about our winters. I find this very endearing. There are plenty other Figwood items for purchase that are made in Bali and Thailand. The gloves have a simple design but are chunky. They also have top of the glove removal so that you don't have to de-glove every single time. I found other glove designs to be awkward. They were missing top part of the fingertips which seems like the very reason you'd glove. Maybe I'm not on trend. They also have very few gloves in store due to the end of season. Seems like the season is just beginning and winter is ramping up. SERVICE: The service is attentive and personalized. I was offered assistance with glove shopping. The sales associate was really warm and friendly. I enjoyed my experience at the store. Unfortunately, I'll probably seldom stop in because the clothing sizes are not accommodating to me. I'll visit once in a while if I'm ever in need of well made accessories or gifts. They have an online store if like me you don't live in the Cleveland area. Their store is worth visiting though if you are in town. I don't know if the lady was the owner or not, but she offered superb service. When I went in a wife was looking around and a husband was acting like he was dragged in. He should have been looking at what she was looking at for future gifts, as many guys get lost when it comes time to get their lady gifts and there are tons here to choose from. I took care of 4 ladies on my list on one visit! What a time saver! Fun mugs! Great jewelry! And all for reasonable prices! That guy may have missed the boat, but I sure did not. I have been here 4 times now, and have had a good experience everytime. The staff is always really nice, and there are many cute apparel and accessory options. They also have home-y things like candles, wall decor, etc. There are two locations nearby- this one and one in Crocker Park. Both a very nice, but I like this especially for the area it is in. It's walking distance from Barrio and a great place to go when you are waiting for a table. I appreciate the apparel selection. You can walk out if Banyan Tree with a professional work or WFH outfit, a cute 'going out' outfit, or something casual/cosy. Great store for cards and gifts too. read more

Banyan Tree is indisputably cute. It's a beautiful, spotless store that has been thoughtfully curated. I completely realize that boutique fashion often caters to small sizes. On my visit, I didn't see a huge diversity of sizes. When I would find sizes more suitable for someone tall (like myself), despite the tag saying L, they still felt like S/M's. There's a lot that happens behind-the-scenes with businesses we don't know about, but I wish the inventory would reflect more inclusive sizes if it was at all possible (L, XL, plus size), especially that the size of the average American woman is now 12-16. Sometimes the people who walk in ready to spend some serious $$$ don't fit into a S/M. It's a hard feeling to want to shop local but realize you can't. I do have to give props for their accessories. Had I been looking for a gift for someone, I would've had a gold mine. I loved the Cleveland and Ohio branded barware and accessories for the woman or man that loves to entertain. They also had a bag that said "Bitch, I'm from Cleveland" which had me laughing pretty hard. I also loved their inventory of quirky and unique cards, which alone were pretty great. They also had some handmade soaps and products near the register which would make a great gift. The third location of a local boutique! Being a newcomer to the Cleveland scene, I can't compare it to the other two, but suffice it to say that I like what I see so far. If only I weren't on the grad school budget. Banyan Tree has a cozy ambiance, with lots of warm, earthy hues. Soft leather, cashmere, cotton, and wool seem to dominate the current batch of women's clothing, and I made several stops during my Brownian motion through the small store. You could definitely shop for a whole outfit here, hats, shoes, earrings, and all. But definitely at a price! A tiny wall near the front of the store is dedicated to the fashion forward baby - so I guess you could kill two birds with one stone if you're so inclined. Other gifts and Cleveland-themed knick-knacks similar to what you'd find at Urban Outfitters (but less risqué) were also on display. And they have a variety of cards for all occasions! The two ladies on duty at the time were very friendly and only slightly hover-y since I was the only customer inside at the time. The two fitting rooms were very nice, with tilted floor to ceiling mirrors and separated from prying eyes by maroon curtains. Not the best coverage, but the spaciousness and cleanliness pretty much make up for it. The quality seems up to snuff but remains to be validated after the test of time, and hopefully they'll be introducing sales over time so I'm not forced to spend $30 on a (albeit cute) hat or $50 for a sweater. read more

I thought this place was really fun and I would go back to look around for no particular reason! Carries clothing, odds & ends, candles, jewelry, some beautiful purses, and who knows what else. My friend and I bought matching teardrop rings for 8 dollars each*. This place has some really cute stuff but it's so snotty you would think you accidentally drove to Beachwood. I don't like leaving bad reviews unless I feel like I have given something a fair shot, but at this store, the staff are never friendly, and I've been in at least four times now over the course of months. I should be this store's target: young professional woman who likes eclectic and pretty clothes and housewares. But the staff really ruins it--I think their favorite thing to do is stand behind the register looking bored or too cool for everyone, while eyeing you down...it's pretty lame. And it's too bad because they do have a well-edited store but it's not worth the attitude. Not to mention the price point; this is Cleveland, not New York. I get that you're a boutique but really? They might have some nice stuff but let's be real, it's still just a magazine rack, and still just a candle, even if it is made from 100% organic free trade soy smells-like-heaven rarest flowers on earth in the remote rainforest discovered by natives and revered for its healing capabilities from a single burn. It's a candle, it shouldn't cost the same as an entree at Lola even if it is the best candle you've ever had. Only Oprah should burn $40 candles. In theory, I like this place. Their wares are a nice mix of style for the home and style for the self. Compared to stores that sell similarly stylish goods, they're at an "average" price point. The, let's say, "questionable" points are two fold for me: 1) Whoever does the buying for this place seems to be trying to please two separate target audiences. I feel like half of the clothes are meant for the style-savvy, sorta artsy, unique, professional 25-35 year old. The other half? Think eclectic, unmarried art teacher with an inheritance and a half dozen cats (don't get me wrong, I loved my art teachers and I also love cats - this is just to paint a little visual for you). 2) Though I didn't find the staff to be as standoffish or rude as "Allison G" did, I felt that they lacked experience in how to piece outfits together and/or a desire to help a customer do so. Quite honestly, I can put myself together without help from a salesperson just fine. However, if I really love a piece of clothing, often I will ask "What are you showing this with?" just to get some ideas. Hey, I might even BUY something else. I'm always a little bummed when given the answer "We're not really showing it with anything" or "It just came in as an individual piece." See, this is the fun part of your jobs, ladies! Don't shoot me down, let's play around with clothes! Clearly I've got time if I'm asking for your help... I continue to pop in from time to time and usually walk out with something. It's great for Tremont to have a store like Banyan Tree - hopefully other locally-owned apparel shops will move into the neighborhood as well. Tremont "galleries" are largely trust fund, divorcee diversions for Pepper Pike housewives so bored their exes would rather throw money down the toilet for years on exorbitant Tremont rent just to keep the old dear occupied and elsewhere. This is the only explanation I can come up with for why Banyan Tree still exists. In my 9 years living and working and hanging out almost exclusively in Tremont, I think I've seen the same crap do laps around this shop at least 6 or 7 times. There's the foofy overpriced thingie in the window. Now, it's on the wall! Oh look there it is again tastefully surrounded by wine corks! If only the pointless chachki could get frequent flier miles, they might realize some revenue from that. Overpriced does not begin to approach accuracy. At these price points you'd think the monthly Art Walk hors d'ouvres tray could feature a bit more than the oh so Tremont rubberized broccoli flourettes encased in plastic. In short, the perfect place to be across from Lolita. read more

I, too, agree with the Banyan Tree being too pricey. I have sort of decided that if and when I venture inside, it's just for "browsing." It's more of a museum to me than a store. Or maybe a museum gift shop. Where you wander around, look at pretty things, maybe touch some things if nobody's looking, consider buying some set of chopsticks or wine-glass identification tags or a pair of sunglasses, but then you put them back because you realize you don't really need them. I haven't gotten the "cooler than thou" vibe from the people behind the counter, but they definitely have seem uber-sophisticated and too fashionable for their own good. A little intimidating, which is another story entirely, but which also contributes to the fact that I am almost too self-conscious to buy anything here. There was one time I actually went in with the purpose of buying something specific (a pair of "thingies" that convert wine bottles to candle holders), only after I went in I realized I hadn't seen those at Banyan, but instead, at the Geode gallery. Banyan tree is one of the only non-art gallery stores in Tremont. The Banyan Tree is definitely a boutique, with small quantities of the very unique, environmentally minded clothing, house wares, and gift items. What do I mean by environmentally minded? Think sheets made from bamboo. I am priced out of most of their clothing, but I enjoy browsing. I did purchase a great silver cuff bracelet with a fun inscription for my little sis' graduation. What's nice about shopping here is you don't have to worry that the gift you are giving was made by 11-year-old Bangladeshi girls. I have always found the staff friendly. I might have gone in here because my sister bought some stuff and it came in one of those cool "Save the Earth" reusable bags with a Banyan tree logo. I looked, and then looked at the price tag. It wasn't THAT unique or exciting that I would pay that much for most of the stuff. If I had to give a gift to someone, I would suck it up and know that I'd find something there, but pay a high price. Per the other reviews, I didn't find the staff very helpful at all. My friend must have tried on 6 or 7 different sweaters (whom was actually planning on spending money) and nobody came to assist her through her whole shopping experience. They cautiously moved things around or gently retouched a window display, but did not aid to the customers. It seemed like they were all pregnant, too. I felt like I had to get outta that fertile environment ASAP. Good for days when you're depressed and want to shop to make yourself feel better with no regrets about how much you're spending. read more

Yes I love the delectable delights the event shuts down Professor for, but I make my yearly appearance just as much for the Banyan Tree booth as the three cheese mac and chicken. Twenty plus dollar accessories (super funky & fun - my favorite style) in bins for 3 bucks! I'm grabbing bracelets, earrings and scarfs for my mom, sister - and yes, myself. So, at Taste I'd give them five stars, but on the rest of the days of the year, It's all for want, but I just can't justify the price tag. read more

I would like to thank Banyan Tree for ushering me into the Cleveland independently owned boutique scene a few years back. I didn't realize what an abundance of great places there are, and Banyan Tree is one of my favorites! Banyan tree has accessories and clothing for women and men, baby goodies, as well as decor and things for the home. Everything they have is unique and fantastic. It is my go-to place for a few things: 1) Birthday Gifts - their accessories are wonderful. Earrings galore (literally - all over the store), as well as local Cleveland artists and their jewels. They also have great hats/mittens/earmuff options, as well as unique purses, wallets, rings and scarves. 2) Baby Gifts - I'm not sure about you, but I'm sick of the traditional baby stuff you find at chain retail stores. I'm in the market for something unique and adorable - which will make my friend's babies "crawl" or "roll" their stuff in fashion! 3) Cards - they have the most wonderful cards, for all occasions from Birthday, Wedding, Showers, New Baby and Anniversary to cards which are more for the "oops, I effed up" crowd. This place is so damn cute that I can't help but pop in to explore whenever I'm passing by. Everything is trendy & unique & quirky & just... I want all of it. I also follow them on Instagram & am constantly swooning over the adorable & well-designed photos they share there. I appreciate a local biz with social media savvy! Alas, one star off for two reasons: First, I just... never, ever find the very hip staff to be particularly friendly or welcoming. They say hello when you enter the store, but even that usually seems bored & in keeping with their general display of blasé. I tend to get the impression that the staff likes their jobs but disdains their shoppers, which is not a great feeling when you're, you know, one of those shoppers. Perhaps most importantly, for me, is that, at the end of the day, Banyan Tree is still pretty spendy. I understand that independently owned retailers have to charge more than, say, Target, & their selection is certainly more interesting, but the prices here just aren't working for my budget most of the time. Sure, they have some more moderately priced trinkets & paper goods, but most of their jewelry, clothes, etc. are all marked up to standard boutique prices that are just not feasible for my wallet, much as I'd always like to be able to buy local. Banyan Tree is a boutique-type store. I've been here 2x most recently and haven't been incredibly impressed. I find the store to be a mish-mosh of this & that and I can't really figure out what happened to the more gallery-style shop from years ago that I loved. Also lost is customer service. I'm not greeted when I enter, leave, or wander about the shop. I feel like the "hip" people working there are just that, too "hip" for boring, old, little me who may or may not spend money in this shop. The clothing options lend themselves toward the younger set, and while I'm not old in any sense of the word but I kind of feel like I'm walking through an expensive Forever 21 with baby clothes, jewelry, and random home-goods thrown in. I love that the CLE is finally being peppered with more "unique" and "boutique" shops that gives a variety the big-box stores do, but I can't get a good read on Banyan Tree or what they're really about. Honestly, I can't say I'd really go here if I wasn't in the hood walking around, or of my own accord. Just un-impressed overall. read more

I didn't spend a lot of time in BT but the quick 10 minutes I did, they made it count! I was in a hurry and on my way to a wedding shower that I didn't pack a dress for. After a quick stop at the R/S boutique a mile away, I was referred here. Upon walking into the store, I grabbed the first sales associate I saw and said that I had 10 minutes to find a semi-conservative dress for a party an hour away, I needed something to cover my legs, I have black pumps and I don't really care about the price. The sales associate I was talking to quickly introduced me to someone else who immediately started pulling things for me. All of there dressing rooms were occupied and she helped me cut in line so I could start trying stuff on. They were all cute!! After I decided on one that was displayed with a necklace, I asked for tights and put those on. The sales associate pulled off all the tags that were on me and met me up at the counter to pay for everything. Tights, necklace and long-sleeved dress, total damage of $108 even. Not bad! Not bad at all! Looking at my receipt later told me that the dress was $44 (great deal!), tights were $8 (Targets might be cheaper) and the necklace was $48 (but its one w/ a lot of bling). Overall, I'd love to spend more time in there if I had it and the service was great and the prices are reasonable. Definitely worth your time and money to go! read more

I yelped for "fun shopping" and Banyan popped up. I decided to grab a nice dinner instead and found myself walking right past this place on the way to dinner. It's essentially 2 storefronts with mostly fairly priced women's clothes, jewelry, some stationary supplies and some super cute kids books and such. I snagged a very unnecessary turtle soap dish (only $10!) and some handmade earrings (by the owner!). Cute boutique shop in Tremont. They have their own style and it seems everything in there is very "green" to it. However, it wasn't cheap either. It is mainly a womens clothing store but they also have baby clothes and miscellaneous items in the back (i.e stuff for your kitchen, random gifts, accessories, etc.) any cool gift u wanna get for someone can be found here. This is probably a store for a 30 something year old. I like this little place as it is perfectly located for shoppers who have to wait on a table at one of the nearby restaurants. Would I ever buy anything here? Probably not as the prices are high for things i can make at home or find on Etsy for cheaper. Half of this place is made up of clothes of which I spent 0 minutes looking at. Every time I'm back in the CLE, I make a point to stop by Banyan Tree. They have a great selection of clothes, jewelry and home accessories. Recently I picked up some fleece lined leggings (awesome, warm but not bulky at all!). The staff is always super friendly, stopped in on Christmas eve and the owner, didn't get her name, was there with husband and baby in tow, helping customers. The store has a every expanding baby section, which I don't get much use from but is understandable because of previous mentioned baby. The jewelry is my favorite thing to get there, I still get compliments on pieces I got there years ago. Rings, necklaces, earrings - great destination for a last minute gift. I feel like Banyan Tree makes the effort to keep the CLE in Cleveland with city themed pieces. My wife and I have strolled through this Tremont boutique a few times and have always found interesting, high quality items for our home or clothing or accessories for my wife. This reminds me of a lot of the more urban niche shops I've visited over the years. It boasts a nice atmosphere with largely eco-friendly wares that are unique. Because of the atmosphere, quality and absence of cookie-cutter garb, I found their prices to be where I would expect them as well. read more

Well, having deeply compromised my manhood in my previous Yelp review of a vegan cooking class, let me just go ahead and polish it off here by submitting a review of a woman's clothing boutique. That should finish the job, right? Confession: I like shopping with my wife. Why? Because she's hot. I'm not sure if she thinks it's a blessing or curse being trapped in the body of a mid-80's heavy metal video chick, but for me, watching her in alternating states of dress and undress in a variety of cool and sexy clothes is one of the sublime pleasures of my current existence. I even have a shopping system called The Bone-o-Meter. If she tries on something that gives me a partial right there in the store, it's automatically leaving the store with us, no questions asked. Ring it up. We're both in our late, LATE 30's and a bleak future of floral-patterned jumpsuits and pleated elastic-waistband jeans awaits both of us very soon, thus we might as well try to look good while we still can, so buy that damn dress already please. But still, she'll come up with the usual excuses. The tiresome obligatory cycle of feminine self-deprecation. I look fat. I need to lose some weight to wear this. Bullshit. Really, why don't women defer to OUR supreme knowledge of the female form when it comes to this stuff? I've been studying it in obsessive detail since I was like 6 years old. I have engaged in 4-hour-long discussions where the sole topic of conversation was one woman's buttocks. Trust me...I'm an expert. So, anyhow, far from being an indictment of my heterosexuality, I think of it as an affirmation when we step into Banyan Tree together to make a series of rash, impulsive purchases. (Like, remember when Richard Gere took Julia Roberts shopping in Pretty Woman? Richard Gere is a pillar of heterose--....oh, nevermind. Bad example.) During our last visit, the Bone-o-Meter was on full alert. Some tight jeans with excessively complicated stitching? Yes...I like that. A deceptively simple pearly-gray dress that makes her look like a classy airline stewardess from the 1960's? Yes, I'd like to join the Mile High Club, please. Some crazy pink top that actually, upon further inspection, turned out to be a dress that Britney Spears' wardrobe consultant would likely eschew as too revealing? The needle was in the red. This place makes Ann Taylor Loft look like the Dress Barn (...which I've always just assumed sold clothes exclusively for livestock.) The Banyan Tree also sells housewares and wine glasses, etc., but these things tend not to register on the Bone-o-Meter. I'll browse them with bored disinterest while my wife is gettin' busy whoring it up behind the dressing room curtains. They also have men's clothes, but they're sized for midgets and heroin junkies. Not much offerings in the XXXL Tall category. Oh, you poor girls who have to hide or justify your irresponsible shopping impulses. You should have been nicer to me in high school. read more

This is the tale of two reviews: the clothing itself and the staff. First off, the clothing. There are some cute items and accessories. Personally, I prefer Evie Lou down the street (LOVE Kim and her style) over Banyan Tree. What was really offputting to me was the staff. They were more interested in talking about what toppings they wanted to order on their pizza than paying attention to me. There must have been at least 5 people working on a Friday night, and not one of them bothered to ask me if I needed help. What the? I'll skip this place and go to Evie Lou every time. Our family stopped here while having brunch downtown. We loved the eclectic mix of items. Many of the clothes looked the same so a better variety would have been nice. The pricing seemed reasonable. The layout of the place was interesting - although haphazard. There is something for everyone in the store. One of the salespersons was semi-friendly..the other one did not say a word and seemed to be watching us as if we were about to steal something. Not sure we would return! When I need a wedding, birthday or baby gift, Banyan Tree is where I shop. I've been a customer for years and years, and love the Maruca purses, the unique and reasonably priced jewelry, the charming cards, the friendly staff. Their clothing lines are funky, sure, but this 40-something executive has bought a few pieces for weekend fun anyway! Spending $25 or $40 for lovely gifts, wrapped so perfectly, just doesn't strike me as outrageous at all. I've been in the store probably 30 times - always a warm greeting, it's easy to ask anyone questions, and no one hovers over me.. which I'd hate anyway. Banyan is totally charming - A real gem in the city. What is with the whiny tone in these reviews about this wonderful store's price points? It's unwarranted, girls - give your head a shake. If you can't afford a reasonably-priced store at age 25, is it now the store's fault? Do you post bitter comments about Lola and Johnny's because at this point in your young life you can't afford to dine there? No merchant is obligated to meet your personal economic budget At This Very Moment. Who doesn't love them some Banyan Tree?! The staff is always beyond friendly and the clothing and accessories aren't like anything else you'll find in the area. Now they've even become a fair trade shop which I love and have the cutest gift items for anyone. Whether it's newlyweds, a new home or baby or a friends birthday you can never go wrong with buying from Banyan Tree. You'll never find the same thing twice so everything is super unique.
