The fried shrimp appetizer had fried noodles wrapped around them. They tasted like greasy cardboard. The Tom Yum soup was so tart and had only a couple mushrooms and a couple sliced tomatoes in it. We've only ever gotten takeout, so I can't speak to anything but the food. That being said, this is our ABSOLUTE go-to for Thai food. Or just takeout in general. We probably get something from here a few times a month. Portions are generous, flavors are strong and delicious. Our favorites include: pad see eu, pad kee mao, duck curry, basil eggplant, combination fried rice. Finally stopped in on my way home after a whole year of driving by and saying, I want to try that place! Unfortunately, I was somewhat disappointed. I entered the restaurant to find that they have converted it to a take out or delivery only business. Ok, no price there. Ok, no problem we all have to do what we have to do to get by, I get it. I let the (shopkeeper? Waitress?) know that I need to place a to go order, and she says "ok" from across the room. So I grab a menu booklet, look through it and looking at the sushi menu I ask, "generally how many pieces come per roll?" She answers curtly, "depends on the roll".... So helpful. I say "ok, how many pieces for the crunchy spicy salmon roll?" She says "6". Great! That works for me. I tell her I'll take the crunchy spicy salmon and a spicy miso soup. I wait about 8 mins, (quick service!) and she sets my food down in front of me. I say "thanks!" Then look to see if there is a paper menu attached that I can use to order offline/directly via phone call. She looks at me like I'm crazy and says "no, we don't use those." So obviously they prefer only online orders to be placed. Finally I get home and sit down to my food. The roll flavor is ok, but the sushi roll is a weird unnatural bright red. Additionally, they don't use sushi soy sauce and they packed my sushi roll in a metal container placed right next to my hot soup... yum!/s. The spicy miso soup was good. All things considered, I don't think I'll stop in again. I was really looking forward to this place, and I'm sad that I had a less than ideal experience. read more

Quick quarantine update: As of July 9, 2010, Bangkok Belly is still doing carry-out only. They have tables lined up inside the dining area, blocking you from going further. There are a couple of chairs for you to sit and wait on your order, along with a giant bottle of GermX hand sanitizer. We ordered the Fried calamari, Pad Thai with Tofu, Pad See Eiw with chicken, and the Tempura. The amount was smaller than expected but the noodles were good. The fried calamari was a little rubbery. The tempura was over fried on the shrimp and not enough on the large broccoli. I will most likely order from here again since it's in my hood but will try other things on the menu. read more

Really really tasty Thai food. Unfortunately it's juuust a bit far for convenient frequent visits, but when I have some extra time for lunch this is a strong candidate. Pad thai is flavorful but could use some vegetables for crunch and variety. Basil entree is excellent. Those are my two go-to dishes, but I have tried others which are good to great. Fried calamari is excellent. They have an $8 lunch special as well. Overall, this may be the best overall Thai joint that we have tried in this quadrant of the city/suburbs. read more

BYOB! Friendly staff and good food. Not great but good and it'll get the job done if you're in the hood. When recently dining here I tried both a couple maki rolls and one of their entree dishes. Prices are great for the portions you get. The edamame was perfect and enough for leftovers. The crab rangoons were plump and tasty. The potstickers were good, nothing extraordinary, though I liked the inclusion of some spinach for freshness. For my main dish, I tried the cashew chicken from the signature entrees menu. I liked the flavor, the fresh vegetables and amount, but the chicken was mostly breading and a bit soggy from the sauce. Still good but not a lot of actual chicken. My boyfriend got the sweet and sour chicken and enjoyed it but had the same thoughts about the excess breading. Also like ordering half a order. Our assorted vegetable dish was OK. The rice was lumpy, with half filled containers. The rama chicken was the big loser. The container it came in, had 1/8 inch of water in it. Looked like they microwaved the frozen broccoli, instead of steaming it. Now mix in overcooked chicken with a lump of peanut sauce. I told them I'm allergic to yellowfin tuna, which is the pinkish red tuna, and asked them to replace it. The lady who answered said she'll tell the cook that I can't have that. I said could you ask the cook, because it's chef's choice, what sashimi pieces he's going to put in there because if I don't like what he's going to put in there, then I'm just going to order more noodles, and he refused to tell me what he was going to pick as his chef's choice. So I said "Could you ask him again to just tell you what he's going to pick," (I felt the need to repeat to be sure they understood) "then if I don't like it, I'm going to order something else for myself, so you're still making money," and she said the chef refuses to tell her. I said well tell him he lost a customer as well. I've been going there for many years and years and years, and now I'm done. Food is average, so there are dishes I go back for, but my family tends to pass when I order from there, so 1 star for customer service and 2 stars for the food because they put a lot of cheap filters in, like onions in their Mongolian beef, to make it look like they gave you plenty. I visited Chicago this past weekend and my sister took me out to Bangkok Belly for my last meal in Chicago. We were looking for something simply low key, delicious and not very expensive and we found ourselves in a warm welcoming, cozy and cute dinning room of Bangkok. As a native of Thailand, what strikes me first is the crude hand written writings in Thai on the back walls - most are playful, some are childish and many are plain fun that brought me a smile. They have a large but manageable menu. We ordered in Thai, tempura appetizer, seafood fried rice and Thai boat noodle. Shrimp and Vegetables tempura came quickly. It was crunchy and the accompanying dipping sauce was just right. The main course timely came later and they nailed it! The seafood fried rice was seasoned evenly with nam prik prao sauce and white pepper. The seafood was fresh and generously portioned. The Thai boat noodles had also delicious broth. Long, thin rice noodle was cooked perfectly. The beef was slightly hard but flavorful. Both of these dishes are my favorites to order back home in Thailand and Bangkok belly did a great job! Coming from Washington DC where Thai food is now a rising trend in fine dining. I wish we would have more restaurants like Bangkok Belly in Norwood Park where it feels like eating casually in a small cafe in Thailand, not over the top but serves delicious food prepared fresh, taste close to home, and doesn't break my bank that I can go a few times a week. Used to be OK. Today my $7 two scallops were actually three tiny ones and not good and my noodle dish with beef had two small pieces of beef. Not acceptable. Garbage. I hope they go out of business. After waiting an hour, they only delivered half my order. So I called to say they forgot one of the entrees. The woman who answered said okay they'll send it as soon as possible. I waited another full hour, called again, and she said it was on its way. Still 20 more minutes, no food, so I called again and as I was on the phone the delivery person was pulling up. I was extremely patient and polite on my first call - mistakes happen - but to then take another hour and 20 minutes (2 hrs and 20 min total) to get me the entree that I paid for and barely apologize or try to make it better is awful service. Incorrect delivery, 2.5 hours wait time, multiple phone call reminders, barely an apology, no offer to comp the entree or throw in another dish. Bad business! Go to Siam Treasure instead. read more

This is a cute little place located Norwood Park. I usually order for take out or delivery but the decor at Bankok Belly is pretty cool with a sushi bar to boot! Its also BYOB! The food always tastes fresh and made to order. We uaually get the usual stuff (curries, pad see eiw, pad thai, tom yum soup, etc. We really enjoy all of it. The only thing is that i almost always indicate that i want my order to be spicy and it only comes mildly spicy...if at all spicy. Thank goodness I have spices at home to doctor it up to my preferred spice level. The people who work there are really nice and the service is fast. Five stars for great Thai food: the pad woonsen was fresh and balanced. The tom yum was a flavor bomb--amazing broth bright with lime and chili. We spent enough to get a free sushi roll that was fat and tasty -- perfectly done rice wrapped around thick, buttery avocado slices. However, my guys went with the Chinese entrees, which were simply awful. Both the Sweet and Sour Chicken and the Orange Chicken were stodgy, over breaded, oily and tasteless. The meat appeared to be chicken roll, rather than actual pieces of chicken. They took one bite of each and found both entrees inedible. This may be a case of one restaurant trying to cover too many different cuisines. You'll do fine if you stick to sushi and Thai, but stay away from the Chinese dishes. read more
