I hate moving but I heard about Band With A Van from a friend and tried it. Rob was great! He came with one other guy and they were right on time. Moving took two hours and it cost $250 (+tip), exactly what he quoted. I didn't have to do a thing. I had a few pieces of furniture and lots of heavy suitcases and boxes and they did everything like a pro, even with the 3rd floor walkup. I can't say a single bad thing about the service and value of Band With A Van. I had to move some stuff to storage - too much to cram in a Zipcar. Rob arrived on time, we had the van loaded and stuff stored in no time. The price was reasonable, but what made the difference to us was that he charged in 1/2 hour increments - everyone else was 1 hour. I called Band with a Van when I was in a lurch (getting enough friends to move heavy furniture up 3 flights of stairs turned out to be harder than I thought). I called Rob, and he gave me an incredible timeline and very reasonable quote. On the day of the move, he called to let me know he was running a little late and (only 30 min). A two man team did my move in the exact amount of time quoted. They even helped me with the boxes that I hadn't anticipated and moved in my car. Although it took the two trips he planned (they really do have a van, albeit a large one), Rob didn't charge for the extra travel time. Rob even told me that if I needed any additional help in the future with a piece or two, to let him know. I would wholeheartedly recommend them to anyone moving in the NYC area. I got a yelp account just so I could write a review for Rob, the owner of Band with a Van I was lucky enough for him to move my 2 craiglist bought bookcases at fairly short notice. After a horrendous experience hiring movers to move my queen size bed, I trembled at the thought of having to relive the experience once again. My previous movers advertised as being a man with a van (also on craigslist), and failed to mention that the van was actually a mini van, and ended up tying my bed and box spring to the roof of their car. They were rude, inconsiderate, and even threatening at one point when I gave them too little a tip (in their opinion). It was just one horrible experience. Rob was the complete opposite. Although he was late, he apologised profusely and more than made up for the lost time. He treated my crate and barrel bookshelves with the utmost care and they arrived without a single scratch. I didn't even have to lift a finger- he managed to move 2 fairly sturdy bookshelves on his own. He was incredibly friendly, happy to make some nice conversation in the car, and was always courteous and considerate. Also, being a girl living on my own, I never felt at all uncomfortable or uneasy around him. His rates were fair. Although I did find movers who gave me a lower quote, I'm glad I spent the extra $15-20 going with Rob because I wanted someone who I could trust to treat my furniture as their own. I was referred to Rob by a friend who used him for a full move even though I was just picking up a couch. Pricing was excellent, Rob was prompt, efficient, able to do a night-time move around my schedule, and nice enough not to groan when "elevator building" I was getting my couch from proved to be a 5 floor walkup (obviously a BIG tip was appropriate). When we arrived, the seller asked where everyone else was -- apparently it took 4 people to get his couch up and into his apartment. I was concerned we wouldn't be able to get it out, but Rob expertly navigated the couch over banisters, around corners, and through doorways while coaching me on holding up my end. I had an unbelievably seamless and efficient moving experience with Rob today. I had been referred to him by Greenbaum Moving Co as they had quoted a number way above my budget to move my bedroom furniture and suitcases out to Long Island. I called Rob and left a voicemail with all of my information, and he called me back promptly with his quote, which was incredibly reasonable! He made communication easier by texting to answer any of my questions, and I was able to take a picture of the load and send it to him for him to gauge the size. These guys are totally deserving of all of the other 5 star reviews on here. They are exactly what you want when you need a man with a van - totally professional, nice, prompt, careful, reasonable, easy to communicate with. I had them pick up a big chair from my mom's previous residence and they were given the wrong chair to deliver - not their fault. That wasn't discovered until they got here with it. Another mover might have demanded payment at that and called it a day but Rob, the owner, was really nice about it and went back to get the real chair with no problem at all. I offered to pay more (before he got a chance to ask ) because of the extra trip but I don't think he would have asked for much if anything at all. Really great service. read more

Having lived in NYC for eight years and moved as many times, I consider myself pretty knowledgeable when it comes to moving in this city (on a budget!). I've had a horrible experience (that's you, Sven moving!) and mediocre experiences (getting a UHaul and begging friends to help, which is way too stressful and which I will never do again), so I took to Yelp to help me find a new solution. After seeing all the great Yelp reviews, I entrusted my cherished belongings to Rob. What an easy moving experience (and you thought moving couldn't be easy!). Rob and his helper showed up right on time. He told me ahead of time that it would take two trips considering the amount of stuff I had, but that I wouldn't be charged for the extra legs of the trip. Fine by me! Everything went smoothly until the end when, despite their skill at furniture-tetris, there was barely enough room for everything. This was probably due more to my poor judgment of how much stuff I actually have (way more than I told him, I am sure) than anything else. I was really stressed about moving and exhausted from lack of sleep and proper eating, but Rob is great and my move went better than I could have anticipated. He called to confirm whether he could come early and upon arrival started moving my stuff right away. I hired Rob for my move on 9/30 and at the last minute realized I would need more help, so he came with a second guy and a second van. He moved everything from my place in Williamsburg to my new apartment on the Lower East Side and to a storage place by the Seaport. He was absolutely fantastic, fitting near everything into one of the vans and then working miracles by fitting it all in the storage place. I emailed Rob late morning, the day I was hoping to move. He gave me a thorough quote and despite having more to move than I initially thought, the charge was spot on. He was able to squeeze me in the same day and even offered to come earlier when his prior job finished sooner than he thought it would. (I wasn't going to be done packing in time for him to come earlier and he was totally fine to stick with our original scheduled time slot) He arrived early, but indeed called to begin the move at exactly the time we had agreed on.
