I felt the need to write a review after I saw a 1 star review some what seems to me as a disgruntled human Lori. I've been to bananas 3 times in 2 days for lunch and dinner. The service is always amazing and the food is consistently good ! As you can see from the photo we clearly loved it because all of our plates are empty. I had the key wester sandwich and the fish was clearly very fresh and not pre packaged. My only suggestion is make sure you ask for the homemade hit sauce ! This spot was alright. The drinks weren't strong. I had ordered a parcha colada and it was juice. The ambience was average and the bathrooms weren't that great. Being that we're in Puerto Rico I expected Spanish music but it was all American. The fish tacos were good but it needed more flavor. I've been to bananas 4 times in the past 3 days and spent about $350. I noticed this past time on the check that an 18% gratuity is added to the check,Which is odd for small parties,(was just my wife and I) What's more is it is not mentioned on the english version of the menu as pictured,and the waiter(ess) never mentions it. Also when you submit your card to pay it asks if you would like to tip and I usually leave a 20% tip. Of course it's always a good idea to look over the check but this just seems scammy. Sheisty. Pretty sure I just tipped an extra $60 the past few days and instead of enjoying my vacation I'm now fuming. None of the other restaurants ive been to so far do this. Might be a good idea for the servers to mention the automatically added gratuity and to take away the option to leave a tip. Edit to respond to owner. Online it does. This restaurant is right on the Malecon (a nice sidewalk overlooking the ocean). We decided to give it a try because it happened to be near our hotel and we were tired. Based on the ratings on Yelp, I was hesitant. I even urged my family to consider other options. But, being tired, we gave it a shot. Turns out, Yelp was wrong on this one. Bananas is a 5 star in my book. Every entree we ordered was excellent. Top quality. I ordered the chicken mofongo. This is a tomato based chicken entree on top of mofongo (a plantain mashup). My wife had the churrasco steak and my kids had the mahi with coconut sauce. The coconut flan was awesome too. Each item was delicious and served in a timely manner. Our server, Caleb, was great! This place is located on "the strip" where a lot (if not all) the good places in vieques are located. Came here after the biobay tour and wanted to try some traditional Puerto Rican food. We started off with a couple of cocktails, a margherita and Pina colada. Both of them were pretty good, served in Mason jars. We ordered tostones as an appetizer on our server's recommendation. It's basically deep fried mashed plantains. Didn't really have any seasoning - maybe that's how they have it? Moving on to the entree's, we had vegetarian mofongo and jerk chicken sliders. Mofongo: They don't have veggie mofongo on the menu but we read that they can customize it. Apparently, the vegetarian version is more expensive than chicken because veggies are difficult to find on an island! The mofongo was well worth the price - so delicious and flavorful! The jerk chicken sliders were okayish (over-fried, hence -1 star). They have plenty of outdoor seating, you can find a good spot to dine by the ocean! Food is mixed quality, drinks are fine, and the staff is a hot mess. Some staff are working their butts off, while others are bickering with each other and causing drama. Some staff talk down to customers, and one yelled at a diner for no apparent reason. There's a few dishes that I will miss, but they are things I can get elsewhere on the island. The delicious paella had just the right amount of spiciness and was loaded with mussels, shrimp,chicken and sausage. There was a great selection of deserts. TLDR: Just a mediocare tourist restaurant. I recommend you find somewhere else. We originally planned to go to Bili next door but they were closed on Monday. We got the seafood paella which was disappointing and more like just a seafood fried rice. The seafood trio was fine and the ceviche was pretty good. They serve all drinks in plastic disposable cups which is kind of crazy considering the prices. The menu says there is a 18% gratuity added for parties of 5 or more (or can be added to any check). Well apparently they add it to all checks because we only had 3 people and still had it added. They probably expect no one will check and add more gratuity. Also, they still use an American Express check holder but don't take American Express. For the prices you pay I am sure they could replace those and stop misleading customers. I also found there was no soap in the bathroom. By this point my experience was just getting funny so I will stop. Overall I found it to be overpriced and disappointing and for sure NOT the "best" food on the island as people had said. I encourage you to find somewhere else for your limited meals on the island. This is not the only restaurant on the island but they sure do act like people have no other options. Before you pull up a chair, you're informed that "there will be NO substitutions to the any items on the menu" so immediately you feel the warmth of hospitality. I ordered the Caribbean salad, asked for no cheese and the owner couldn't wait to repeat the "no substitutions" rule. I said, "hey, no substitutions required. Just omit the cheese please?" The only edible food on our table was the side of french fries, after dousing them in ketchup of course. This restaurant AUTOMATICALLY adds 18% gratuity. This bar and restaurant was amazing! They have the fastest service on the island. We ordered food, thinking it would take the 30+ minutes it usually takes, but food was here 15 minutes max! In addition, the food was perfectly cooked, both the fish and the chicken were tender and well seasoned. It impressed us so much that we got dessert, which did not disappoint! The reviews on here made us nervous, but it mostly seemed like people who have never traveled to Latin America before. This place is good for a quick bite near the beach. There are many American-friendly options on the menu if you need that, and more traditional-inspired dishes as well. We came here looking for a meal when most other places were closed late at night, and it was absolutely packed. The food was pretty good (the mahi bites were actually miles better than fried swordfish we had at a famed restaurant the night before in San Juan...) and we simply got a pour of liquor knowing that sweetened/blended drinks aren't our thing. Shout out to our waitress, Alicia, who was clearly super busy and overloaded with tables and still made the time to chat, be attentive, give us recs, and be kind. Much appreciated! Last, lots of review complaining about the 18% gratuity. But the menus very clearly state (in English and Spanish) that the restaurant may add the gratuity. My family and I visited the restaurant. The restaurant was empty because everyone was on the other side of the island enjoying the Fiestas Patronales. The food was delicious and the ambiance was enjoyable. However, when waitress took our drink order she offered the local rum but failed to mention that it was double the price for each drink. I asked for an explanation of the high bill. The manager said she will reprimand the waitress for her oversight for failing to inform us about up charge but did not offer to fix our bill.
