This is a small and simple restaurant in Vieques. Though the ladies spoke very little English, they were warm and friendly. I was able to get by with my basic Spanish. There was not a lot of choices in the menu; we really enjoyed the our food here. The cool breeze and their huge fan also made dining relaxing. The passion fruit juice and tamarind juice were nice (though the ones in Ochocielos in San Juan were tangier). The fishes (colirubia or yellowtail fusilier) were fried very nicely. They served two for each person with rice and beans. Simple yet delicious. They don't have desserts here though. They do not accept credit cards. We were initially told we could also pay with Paypal but this was not working too at that time. Cash is still the easiest way to pay here. read more

The food was delicious and the service was very friendly. The owners were very kind. However, I did get 12 mosquito bites, 9 on one leg, while eating there. Highly recommend dousing yourself in DEET before heading here, especially if you're going after 5pm!! The passionfruit and the tamarindo juices were delicious. We spotted this on yelp and decided to try it out in Vieques. We were staying at Bananas Beach Bar and Guesthouse but their restaurant was closed on Saturday. We were really happy that we found Rancho Choli. This was a block or two away from the beach where most of the other restaurants and food trucks are. It was close to closing, but they were happy to seat us anyway. They were really friendly and genuinely happy to have us as customers. The food was traditional and excellent. The price was a very reasonable. Buena Ganga! Our only disappointment was that we were leaving the next day and couldn't go back for another meal at Rancho Choli. read more

We dined here before our bioluminescent bay kayak. They had run out of chicken and beef, so we ordered mostly fish and crab. They did still have a few "pasteles con pollo" (basically thin tamales with chicken) left. The grouper filet came with tostones (fried mashed Plantains) was very good as was the arroz con yuecas (sp?)--rice with bean soup. Service was very kind and accommodating. Wonderful traditional Puerto Rican food a block or two from the Malecon. Very cute open patio for dining. I had chicken guisado ( a chicken stew) and rice and both were delicious. I would definitely go back more than once next time I am in Vieques. read more

So glad we walked into the neighborhood a bit to eat at this little gem. It was one of the best meals of our trip to Vieques. I had the whole fish, and my son had the chicken hind quarters. My 3 friends and I stumbled upon Ranchi Choli a few blocks from our Airbnb in Esperanza, Vieques island. This was the experience we had been hoping for but hadn't found on Vieques until our 4th day here. We had pasteles (shrimp, pork) which are made in banana leaf like Tamales but much softer and made with squash base), whole fish (grouper), chicken, rice, and beans. So absolutely delicious. Great option for authentic Puerto Rican food. The locals recommend this place which is a couple blocks from the touristy areas. The roast pork and red snapper were good. Large portions. They don't have any prices posted so ask them first before ordering. Don't expect your meal to be cheap but it will be tasty and authentic. BUYERS BEWARE. Cash only. We stumbled upon this spot since it was the only one open during the off-season (2nd week of August). They do not indicate prices for their dishes, and we should have asked but they insisted on us paying after the meal which should have been our first hint. We ended up have to pay for $20 for grouper filet, $20 for shrimp, side of rice (not included ) is $3, water $1. They ended up charging us for an extra grouper!! The grouper was sweet, flavorful, presentable. The shrimp was very meh. Rice was full of flavor. So overall the taste of the place was good but we were expecting a lower dollar point for the quality / quantity. Our bill came out to $173. There is a nice patio in the back with several tables and also bathrooms (with no running water to flush or wash your hands). I had a grouper fillet with a light garlic sauce and white rice and kidney beans which was in a delicious light sauce. The grouper was perfect. It was moist and flakey. The rice wasn't dry. Very good food! I wanted to go here as it was a bit off main street. I got squid (pulpo) with rice and beans and sweet plantains ($13). Squid was a bit chewy and platanos weren't as ripe so that's the only reason for 4 stars. I heard the fish was really good though. Staff was very nice and service was quick. Was highly referred to visit Rancho Choli by two local men . Our bill was $72.00 as if this was a Five Star Restaurant. The white rice red beans and breaded steak cooked in fish oil and fried plantains in same oil. Simply because we are from the out of state and not a local we where over charged. That's probably why the prices are not on the board next to food. Highway robbery total disappointment and upset. We felt it necessary to let other visitors of what occurred to us. read more
