First time coming here. Loved every minute! From the great customer service to the delicious dishes to the decor. Every minute I was there just got better and better. The owner pulled out my chair when he seated us, he hung my coat, he gave insightful menu advice. My Hubby and I ordered an appetizer that was fantastic. Then we ordered three entrees to share, all we incredibly delicious. Then for desert we got the sticky rice with fresh coconut ice cream and it was to die for. We are vegetarians, which can make it tough finding good food sometimes but there were plenty of options for us. I would go there again and again. My husband and I visited Ban Thai for my birthday festivities, and it was a highlight of my weekend. The service was exceptional, as we were warmly greeted as we walked through the door. The decor is colorful, and the atmosphere is relaxing. We enjoyed hot green tea, a tasty spring roll, and a delicious chicken satay with peanut sauce for starters. Our entrees were a spicy and flavorful basil chicken with rice, and a comforting vegetable soup with tofu and glass noodles. Both were exceptional and bursting with fresh flavors. We look forward to visiting this wonderful restaurant every time we return to St. Joseph! read more

I love Thai food. Having lived on the west and east coast, I've been to many Thai places. I have eaten here a couple of times and have ordered take-out. It is decent. They have all kinds of options for any palette - but I'm a spice girl (tell me what you want, what you really want. Haha) and it's never spicy enough. I love their faux duck (which is pricey) but their tofu is kind of boring (and they were skimpy on the amount of tofu) and I always ask for extra sauce and extra spicy, but it never really matches up to my requests. I'm one of those that if the spice level is 10 - I ask for 11. I was actually told no to extra sauce in my dish last time I got take out. It's a bit pricey for the area, but being the only Thai place, I assume they cornered the market. I usually only go when my Thai cravings are overwhelming. But the service is always nice and it is a cute little place. read more

We really enjoyed this place! Looking to get away from the myriad bar food establishments, we found Ban Thai. The husband and wife team who run the place were very friendly and attentive. We had to wait a while for our order; they don't have any other employees and let us know about the wait right when we walked in. This was fine for us. Lunch was ok. Dinner was great. I like this place, but I'm a little annoyed with it. I was very happy to see SJ get a Thai restaurant. But my first experience was okay at best. They seemed to be very understaffed because the host/owner kept telling us how long it was going to take. At first, wait times were usually 30+ minutes. I think it's gotten better over time but it can still be terrible if you want take out. Another thing I thought was odd was that the owner FORCED us to order from the lunch specials when we went. He refused to serve us anything else! Who does that?? He's funny but a little weird. Against my better judgement my wife and I went there for dinner one day and were very surprised. We got the green and musaman curry. We loved it! I was amazed at the difference between lunch and dinner. So I guess if I were to give you advice, I'd say go only during dinner. The Pad Woon Sen is my favorite and the fried spring rolls are good (love the chili sauce). Lunch is a good deal with a small salad, app tasting of the day, and your meal for $6-9. So, here's the real deal. I went here with my boyfriend. He ordered the Green Curry (medium hot), and I ordered the Thai Basil Fried Rice. He said that his was great with just the right amount of heat (meaning it was crazy spicy), and mine was fantastic. I don't know what the lunch specials look like, but these portions were big. Mine was so big, I wanted to take half of it for lunch tomorrow...but, then I just ate it all. Next, and most importantly, WE SPLIT AN ORDER OF THE STICKY RICE WITH MANGO. Such a dish is only in season in the summer when Thai mangos can be shipped to the US. Sticky rice with mango is a staple at every Thai place I've ever been to...and it's the reason I keep going back. Sticky rice with mango consists of: sticky, white rice drizzled with sweetened coconut milk and a freshly sliced mango on the side. STEP 1: Take slice of mango on your fork along with some sticky rice. STEP 2: Insert fork into your mouth, chew, and swallow. STEP 3: Attempt to avoid becoming addicted. I will definitely be back this summer while it's still in season. And, besides the sticky rice with mango, our food was terrific. And, the guy serving us (seemed like the owner/manager) was ridiculously courteous. He even did this little bow when we left. Great! read more

This place brings a unique cuisine to the Joe. Jimmy, while he can be cut and dry in his interactions, is very polite and even more thankful for your business! Each meal is made to order with fresh ingredients he personally travels to purchase frequently (mostly from Chicago). I had the Green Curry with beef and with with Hot for my spice level, and everyone at the house was jealous of how good it smelled. Of course, I didn't spare any of this little treat because the taste is even better! People complain of the serving size, but for the quality of the food and the care in preparation, who cares? And for anyone who has traveled internationally will know that the portions are legit, they just aren't your typical American Fail Fest food pile. If that's what you want, go to a fast food Chinese place. Sure, it takes some time to get your order, but that's because it's all made fresh like I mentioned earlier. Great spot! This review is based on the lunch time menu and about 1-2 months after they opened. For lunch time you have about 10-12 specials to pick from and a few appetizers and thats about it. The lunch specials are very small for the price. If you look at the yelp pictures that is about all you get for lunch and you will pay $8-10 for it. I went for lunch one time and will never go back for lunch again, as I left still hungry and the specials where not that filling. And it took about 30mins to get our food and half my table (table of 4) was eating about 15mins before the rest. As for the food its self it tasted fine. read more

Food was very good, we typically get takeout from here as the restaurant is very small. It's nice to have different food around this area. I got the pad see ew, veggies were crisp and noodles were well sauced. We also got some spring rolls and pad Thai. Spring rolls were nice and crunchy inside, with good vegetables. Pad Thai had a good balance of tart, sweet, and crunchy, with the typical peanut/veggie toppings. Have not tried drinks here or seen how the service is. Takeout can sometimes have a long prep time, but that is stated ahead of time if it's a problem. read more

Ban Thai is awesome. Jimmy is a wonderful host and he provides excellent service and quality food. I know he travels to Chicago weekly to get fresh ingredients he can't find here, and it shows in his food. The restaurant is small, but it feels intimate rather than cramped. Classic Thai food- great curry and noodle dishes with some fiery choices. Personally I love the green curry but everything I have tried has been good. The only downside is that he is closed every Sunday and Monday...and sometimes it feels like a crapshoot the rest of the week. I know they frequently travel. Regardless of the size of Saint Joe, this is legit Thai food. Jimmy, the owner, buys fresh ingredients and it pays off! The food is great, the servings are right on in my opinion and Jimmy is great. Some people say the service is not that great, but he does pretty much everything, so he's just busy, not impolite. The place is very small, so keep in mind that you can't bring a party bigger than like 6 people. For a lunch special I highly suggest the Beef Pad Kee Mao with an app of spring rolls...so good! I was extremely excited that St. Jo would finally have a Thai restaurant. However based on my experience eating lunch, I am not overly impressed. The ambiance is nice, a step above a Chinese take out place. There was only one server, (the owner) who was very attentive. I was given the lunch menu and everything on it was pretty pricey. From my memory, most of the items were around $7.00. I went with an order of Pad (not sure what the second part of the dish is called) and received a tiny salad. The salad was fresh, but nothing else stood out about it. The plate of noodles that followed was disappointing. There was a very generous helping, however it was bland ( I asked for it to be spicy) and ultimately I've cooked better ramen noodles at home. At some point I am going to try a dish from their dinner menu and hope that it'll be better than lunch. I'll post an update after trying their dinner fare. read more
