I drive past this shop a thousand times and always wondered what kinds of merchandise they have. Finally got to see. Entered shop, lots of the typical souvenir stuff. Zero greeting, zero customer service. Guy behind the counter. They got some affordable Aloha shirts. I liked the little water fountain (table top) in a coconut shell. Being that the employee didn't care to greet us, I didn't bother to inquire about it's price. Lots of bamboo logs. Bamboo made souvenir items. Nice bamboo chest of drawers. read more

What a great store! If I lived here, I would be getting so much from here. We went inside for a look. I'm amazed at how affordable this store is. We did buy a small bamboo cutting board. We do have a big one at home, but need a small one. The guy at the counter was friendly. The store has a variety of bamboo products that really stood out, and we will buy more on our next trip! Place closes at 4pm. We walked in at 3:18. The person working there told us 2x they close at 4pm. I told her "that is like in 40 minutes...I am sure we will only be here for like 10 minutes". She than tells us that she has to close the door exactly at 4pm so we have to be out by 4pm. Instead of looking around we left. This place should look at replacing their help. If I could give a "0" or negative I would. She was an ANTI salesperson. The place looked like it had some cool stuff but I refuse to ever go back. read more

For sure, my consumer emergency warning system was poised on full alert, I didn't anticipate finding much of interest in this store. It's strategically placed smack-dab in the center of tourist row on main street, and it's called Bamboo Works, I mean, hello? That's about as specific as "hang loose". It was the last place I expected to find a random house gift for our hosts: a cutting board. Indeed, we found a high quality bamboo board, at a very fair price, and we spent a lot of time perusing the rest of the place. From bamboo shades and watches to art and fashion, this place delivered its title in spades, it's worth a visit, you'll like the attention to detail regarding service, too. read more

Living up to its name, you really can get the works, everything from flooring and furniture to bed sheets and clothing. I buy all of my underwear here as living in the tropics, once you wear bamboo you won't want anything else next to your skin. Socks and hoodies are great too. May cost a bit more but bamboo is more durable And a tip ladies, the men's boxers make great lounging shorts. Now if they could just keep the black camisoles with shelf bra in stock...in demand and hard to get from the manufacturer just now. read more

Two doors down from Java Kai in Kapaa, Bamboo Works is well worth a mooch. I've never seen a store before that's completely devoted to bamboo, and it's fascinating to see how many things can be made from this one sustainable material. They had a nice selection of kitchen stuff from Totally Bamboo in CA, like a Kauai cutting board for $20 and a long rolling pin for $27 (see pics). There's a good selection of clothes containing bamboo viscose, which is made by deconstructing the cellulose from bamboo pith or leaves. There are some Hawaiian shirts containing 65% bamboo viscose and 35% cotton ($69), some T-shirts made by Spun Bamboo (70% bamboo viscose, 30% organic cotton, $29) and some very nice T-shirts with prints for $35. Some of the socks looked a bit sketchy - it would be nice to see bamboo socks from Footprint and boxers from TexereSilk. There were some beautiful surfboards and paddleboards from Blue Planet Surf in Honolulu (which unfortunately only contain bamboo veneers over standard expanded polystyrene cores - we need greener surfboards and SUPs!). There are also some non-bamboo items such as slippahs (flip-flips to non-locals) from Zoz (HI), made from natural rubber (50% recycled content) and recyclable, with 20% of profits going to local youth foundations. Besides the normal rating above I'm giving Bamboo Works 5/5 green stars for social and environmental impact. On their website, Bamboo Works list some reasons why bamboo is a good choice - the very high growth rate which means the ability to remove a lot of CO2, produce a lot of oxygen, and supply a lot of material from very little land. Bamboo also requires very few agricultural inputs (pesticides, insecticides, nitrogen, water), grows well with compost as a fertilizer and can also remediate land that's saturated in nitrogen (common these days). It can also be harvested without disturbing the soil, the roots remaining intact and fresh plants regenerating quickly. For textiles, bamboo compares especially well to cotton, which is responsible for almost one quarter of global insecticide use (and some nasty ones too) and over one tenth of pesticides. The viscose process does have some downsides (mainly the carbon disulfide solvent used in the process) so it would be great to see some more bamboo fabrics made by the linen or Tencel processes if Julian can find and stock them. The owner (Julian) is experimenting with different varieties of bamboo to see which ones are best suited to the Hawaii, and could have a big impact on sustainability of construction needs on the islands in the future. In the meantime, the store does a great job at educating and enthusing people about the many uses for one of the best plants on the planet. If you're looking for sustainable textiles in particular, then also check out some of the nearby stores in Kapaa that feature clothes made from hemp and flax (two stores within a 2-min walk that sell hemp clothing, and for flax linen check out the Kauai Plantation Store, a mile south beside Kauai Pasta). read more

OMG No!!!! Bugs galore in this store!! Dust. Imported items with bugs!! Help!!! No shipping. Try elsewhere. You want to put something in your house that's going to be a total nightmare; buy from here. The bamboo imported comes with bugs that will really hurt this Island if they are allowed to spread via this store. Bamboo Works in Kapaa is a really cool store with a wide selection of bamboo products. You can find everything from large bamboo poles to bamboo sunglasses to bamboo hats to bamboo furniture to bamboo clothing to bamboo kitchen accessories to bamboo speaker docks (no electricity or batteries required!) and more! The only bummer for us is that we traveled to Kauai with only carryon luggage, so we didn't have enough room to carry everything we wanted to buy. However, we were told that the possibility of shipping may exist in the future! I feel like just about anyone could walk into Bamboo Works and find something they wanted. We ended up getting several fan/hat combos - they can be used as a fan or made into a hat - very cool. They also have some non bamboo items, like jewelry and other gift items. For example, I bought a cute foot shaped pumice stone and a little tin of tuberose solid perfume that smells amazing. Great place to shop whether you're local or a visitor! read more

This was a very interesting store. We had brought family visiting from the mainland here. My boyfriend and I had never gone into here before. It was pretty neat. There's so much items in here and its really unique. Not to mention that everything is made of bamboo. From sunglasses, to chopsticks, hats to tables, tea sets, it's all made of some form of bamboo. read more

Top notch customer service! I recently attempted to possibly exchange an item I had purchased at Bamboo works. The person in charge at the front desk was super friendly and easy to deal with. I would have understood if he was unable to replace my product due to the fact I had owned it for about one month, but that was not an issue. He helped me with my concern and issued me the brand new item as replacement. I would recommend bamboo works to anyone. I will definitely be returning to the store! read more

I had to write a review for this place because my experience with their customer service was magnificent! I bought a watch there while on vacation in Kauai. I really loved the design and was extremely disappointed when it stopped working a week after returning home. I contacted them and they had me send in my broken watch, sending me back a replacement. It is nice to know that this small business does not take advantage of their customers who are more-than-likely one-time tourists. THANK YOU! read more

This is a small interesting boutique where you can find several cute gifts to take home with you. Some prices are reasonable, and some prices are a little inflated. The lady behind the counter is not an aggressive salesperson which makes it easy for you to take your time shopping, however, she is very informative when you approach her with a question. Due to certain items being inflated, I could only award this place three stars instead of the four it could have (I found the same item I purchased from here a few dollars cheaper at another local store). read more
