We ordered from here yesterday when our son came in town. We had drunken noodles with shrimp and basil fried rice with shrimp. The rice was more greasy than we preferred, but it was good. Very enjoyable meal, beautiful interior, great value. What I loved were the fresh vegetables, and the zucchini in my Penang! Great apps, great entrees... But... I truly hate giving this place a 4 and not a 5, but two things made it happen: 1. A frazzled waiter greeted us like we were annoyance then told us he needed at least 10-15 minutes to seat us with two empty tables that needed bussing when we had an 88 year old woman we were walking in. In reality it took all of 3m. 2. Although the food was delicious, one glaring omission was spice; we all specified that we wanted our food spicy, you know, like Thai food spicy, it was served white people spicy. And to make matters more confusing, my brother was wearing a Sriracha sauce red shirt. Like really?? All the food was very good but one of the things that draws me to Thai food is flavor with a punch of heat that leaves my face sweating. Not so bad that it's searing pain, but a notch or two lower. I understand this is not for everyone but neither is Thai food. Most other Thai restaurants have figured this out and put a spice level rating that people can also customize: 1-5 and usually will step up or down the burn for diners, but even when we all said spicy, it was not even halfway there, even after the dish of chili they gave us to remedy the issue, it got gobbled all up fast, I almost asked for more. Curries are spicy. Papaya salad is always spicy. I suggest you edit the menu to address the spice dilemma and when someone says spicy, please don't hold back, we may be Italians but check our cuisine out, there's more than a few face melters on our menus. read more

I ordered the drunken noodles with veggies and tofu. The takeout process was smooth and safe & as many have commented, the potions are very generous. I'll have leftovers for a few days. They didn't ask about my spice level preference as other Thai places do so I was curious to see how spicy it would be. I would say the spice level was a medium - noticeable spice but not too hot that it masked the flavor. And there were small pieces of Thai chilies throughout with seeds so some bites were hotter than others. This is my preferred level of spiciness but if you prefer mild, it might be worth mentioning when ordering. read more

It was some of the best Thai food I've ever had in a Thai restaurant in the US (caramelized ribs, tempura soft shell crab in Penang curry, veggie phad thai - see pics). But staffing was only two waitresses and one busser for the entire restaurant (inside and outside) on a Saturday night which puts a huge strain on service. I noticed quite a number of diners complained about their food taking longer than an hour who no longer wanted their food. After my waitress delivered my food, I did not see her againso I had to ask for boxes and my check at the register. Still the best Thai food I've had in the area so far. read more

Amazing as always. They really know how to cook and they are so good about gluten free.

So much of their menu is gluten free as well as so many vegan options. It's nice to not have to ask about fish sauce or soy sauce in each meal. Generous portions and I really like how their dishes aren't rice or noodle dominant, instead we got tons of veggies and tofu with a great amount of rice and noodles too. Tom kah was delish. Jasmine tea was nice. Cozy atmosphere. Knowledgeable staff. The only thing with one of the noodle bowls is that I got a small piece of what tasted like chicken I haven't had meat in years and it's really off-putting to me, the texture and taste of it. So I'd just recommend separate cooking for veg stuff. read more

We always crave Thai food while traveling and this place blew us away. We had the green curry with chicken and the spice was right. Fresh vegetables and perfectly cooked. We also had the lemongrass stir fry chicken and it was so flavorful. The service was impeccable. We spent a few months in Ocean Grove this winter and this became our go to takeout. We tried a couple different dishes - green curry, stir fries, dumplings, calamari... The noodle soups are fabulous. But my favorite dish that I suspect I'll have a hard time finding something just as good where I am now... the Pad Thai. This was freaking AWESOME! I seriously am addicted to it. They get busy so service can sometimes be slow, but its totally worth it. We got there at around 6pm, somewhat early for dinner but since it's a small place and we had no reservations we wanted a table right away, which we got. We waited about 10 minutes before we ordered, i get the app beef sate then the drunken flat noodles with beef. The food took about an hour to arrive which normally I would hate in such a small place but since I had no where to be it was fine. When the food came out it was totally worth the wait. It was hot (both in temperature and spice) full of flavor and there was more than enough for two people. Bamboo Leaf has great food and so much potential but it definitely fell short of expectations my first visit. I had made a reservation for a Thursday night and immediately got seated. The dining area is very small but quaint. It can be a little claustrophobic but I didn't mind. What I did mind was how they had a "private" party right smack dab in the middle of the dining room. These people were anything but private as I could hear them talking over everyone and at one point they even had a speech and everyone in the restaurant just stopped. I understand that they made their reservation and they have a right to this and that, but don't act like there is a wall surrounding your table when their really isn't. The whole group was loud and obnoxious, granted this isn't necessarily the restaurants fault, really it isn't. However, it for sure didn't add anything positive to my experience. I wanted to preface my review of the service with the mention of the party because the service was sub par that night. I am unsure if it had to do with the private party or the fact the front of house is insanely understaffed and overworked but I digress. The server almost seemed like she was avoiding us but really she was so busy with that party she was just extremely unfocused and scatter brained. I had asked her at the beginning of the meal for separate checks and to put the initial appetizer for the table onto my check. All is going well so far. Appetizer came out timely, we ordered the sampler and it was very good. Next we ordered the main course, I had the shrimp pad thai and i also asked for pork dumplings. The entrées took a little longer than expected but nothing out of the ordinary. I noticed my dumplings weren't accompanying my pad thai so I tried flagging her down but decided to wait a little longer. Shrimp pad thai was good, I wasn't blown away though. The tofu was really nice however and the dish all over was very flavorful. As time goes on I still see no dumplings. Both my friends have their entrées alongside whatever else they ordered. So I finally flag her down and just mention the dumplings and she acts like she has no idea what I'm talking about. Eventually her memory comes back and she's says she will put it in right away sorry about that. We also ask for dessert. The dessert came out quick we all ordered fried ice cream, and seriously if you're reading this far and decide to come her do yourself a favor and order it. It is really good ice cream and it's accompanied by a fried banana. Surprising to some, it was the best thing I had there, but don't take that as an insult because it was really good. Still no dumplings. So I flag down another worker for the check and the dumplings, and he puts it in immediately and it comes out within 10-15 minutes in a to-go container. Wow Our original server comes back with the check and instead of actually making separate tabs for each check, she takes the total bill and divides it by three. Un-fucking believable. So I take care of the total bill and my friends pay me back. The problem with dividing it by three is we all got different priced entrées and some of use didn't get dessert. The attention to detail is non-existent unfortunately. Having worked in a restaurant I can't help but feel bad for the staff, some 3 people, working the front for a 12+ party and the rest of dining room probably amounting to 60 to 80 diners. Overall I had a mediocre experience as far as service goes, but the food for all its worth was good and the dining room is nice albeit small. TL;DR Went to Bamboo Leaf on a Thursday with friends, asked for separate checks. Ordered shrimp pad thai and asked for dumplings two seperate times and my server never ordered them. Had to ask another worker to get my dumplings at the end of my meal after dessert. And then our checks weren't separate but rather the whole bill just divided by three. Bamboo Leaf has set the standards so high for Thai food, that even when in Thailand I was comparing my meals to ones that I have had here. When I come home to New Jersey this is ALWAYS the first place that I go. The Tom Yum Soup is by far the best I've ever had. We actually have a family friend who drives over an hour to come to eat here, because after trying Bamboo Leaf he wont eat any other Thai food. They are also very accommodating and knowledgeable when it comes to dietary restrictions and I have had no troubles eating here as a vegan, or with people who are gluten free. read more

Relieved to say I FINALLY found a decent Thai spot. I'm in town for a few months and was craving some authentic, spicy Thai food. I got the beef basil fried rice (thanks to a fellow Yelper's photo!) and Massaman curry with fried tofu. I kid you not, I opened the rice while on the road and could NOT put it down, it was DELICIOUS. The curry was great too, a lot of veggies which was nice. Only con was the spicy level, I asked for spicy and it was on the mild side. I read a few reviews regarding the same issue so hopefully the owners reading this understand that some of us can handle the Thai heat too! I guess I'll try it "Thai spicy" next time. Lastly, I feel it IS pricy for Thai (my total was $32) but the portions are huge, and ambiance is nice, I do think it's worth it. read more

I've been going here for 10+ years and always enjoy every meal and the service! This family run restaurant is authentic and always accommodating of changes to dishes. Their pad thai, papaya salad, curries, chicken spring rolls, and steamed dumplings are always delicious. The peanut sauce is so good too! I am so happy to find a mouth-watering Thai food restaurant! This place is top-notch and sets the bar very high for any other Thai restaurant I try around here. I started with the Tom Kah soup- which was sooo favorable and I could have eaten 2 more bowls of this. Then I got the Panang Curry with chicken and Bamboo stir fry with beef. They both were really rich in flavors and spices but also so very different from each other. I highly recommend getting both. They were VERY packed on a Friday night and it was hard to hear the person sitting across from me, so I will most likely do take out on a Friday or Saturday night and will try eating in on a weekday. Very much worth the wait though if you do venture in! read more

Something odd is going on here. I've worked in several restaurants in my time. This restaurant has a shocking lack of support, and front of the house staff. There is a help wanted sign displayed, but the few times I have gone it's only been the same three people working. Which begs the question, why don't people want to work there? OR. Why won't this restaurant hire anyone? I have been to bamboo leaf twice over the course of the summer. The food is delicious. The wait staff is excruciatingly overworked. And the customers, service, and food all suffer for it. Wait time is 30 minutes +. Even with a reservation! Wait time at the table is 20 minutes +! When the staff arrives at your table- harried and unfocused -you only have minutes to put your order in before she has to leave again. Food may arrive cold, likely left over from another order or have been sitting in the kitchen. But if it's hot, it is delicious! Pros: Great food, intimate setting and BYOB is a plus. (you don't have to wait for your server, to have a glass of wine) Cons: Wait time and service are woefully inadequate. But with more servers, and support staff this problem would likely be solved. Food sometimes suffers due to understaffed front of the house. read more
