Went to Balsas Mexican Restaurant tonight, weather was very iffy and wanted to get outdoor covered seating. Our server was very friendly and checked on us frequently. We ordered a pitcher of their house margarita, cheese dip with jalapeños which was very good. I ordered the mini changas and my husband ordered Diabla steak and shrimp. All food was very good. We did get plenty of sunshine and was able to watch the playoffs outside! Just a fyi they do charge a extra alcohol tax and a charge if you use a credit card, we were charged approximately $3.00 more for using a credit card. read more

I been driving by this place and been meaning to stop by and I finally got a chance to. I came in on Saturday during lunch time and there wasn't many people yet. Parking can be limited as it's right off the road next to HWY 9. The outside of the restaurant looks like a house and not much. I always love trying these hole in the wall places Lower cars beware as there is a nice dip from the roadway to the parking lot that could cause you to bottom out underneath. Lol. Thank god, I came in my suv and not my sports car!! We were seated right away by our friendly waitress in a booth of our choosing. I picked Fiesta Calamari as our appetizer. Of course the place had complementary amazing salsa and chips. The fiesta calamari was amazing. It had a spicy sweet mayo sauce to it with pineapple, onions, green pepper, cilantro, lemons, already inside of it. The portion was a generous size as well. $10 well worth it! For the main course, I ordered the Balsa Steak with rice, beans, salad, and veggies. The steak was cooked to perfection and super tender. I loved the rice as well. My date had the shrimp fajitas tacos that looked and tasted super amazing. Service was great here and food was awesome. Quaint little place on the side of the rode. Went with a friend after a hike. We were seated promptly and the server got our drinks. We got a fiesta shrimp for our appetizer which was pretty good, however when I inquired about the menu to the server it seemed that she wasn't familiar with it and repeatedly had to go back and ask. I eventually settled on the molcajete which was okay but was absurdly salty. They also charge for sour cream which I used to temper the saltiness. Overall, disappointing service and just OK food. If you're in a pinch and are craving Mexican food, this would be a place to tickle the craving but not satiate it. read more

I think I found my new favorite Mexican joint! Cumming is not exactly known for restaurant excellence, so this little jewel stands alone. I was delighted to find a fish taco prepared just the way I like it. Each taco contained two or three fried fish cutlets along with a yummy cabbage slaw and some sort of seasoned remoulade-type sauce on top. Boy, that was some tasty fare! Rice and refried beans were the sides. My only complaint was the bland rice. My husband had a humongous untraditional Cuban sandwich which was accompanied by some outstanding seasoned fries. Now, this isn't a fancy new place, but in fact an older, smaller restaurant that probably needs some professional updating! However, you'll overlook all that once you taste their food! read more

This is wine of the best restaurant I have been to in a long time. The staff is super Friendly and attentive even siting down and having a good conversation with us (where ing a mask of course) and going as far as to us being first timers giving a free appetizer and recommendations for the best things on the menu. The place isn't the most welcoming when it comes to appearance, but when we walked in the staff was nice and promptly seated us. I had a margarita and a steak burrito. The burrito was very good and the meat was tender. The margarita lacked flavor and wasn't that strong. My fiance got the chicken quesadilla and it was somewhat bland, i rarely add salt to mexican food but the quesadilla needed it. The service was solid and the food came out quick. First off, the staff was great. Friendly and attentive. The food was pretty good - I wouldn't say great, but there are definitely worse places around. The main thing that struck everyone in my family when we stepped in was the old musty smell - like mildew. The place hasn't had a serious cleaning on a long time - the windows were dusty and the whole place just felt a little grimy and run down. We were all careful not to touch anything we didn't have to. However, again - the staff was great and everyone liked the food well enough. I don't think it stood out as amazing or anything, but provided no ends up getting sick in the next 24 hours, I'll consider the trip worth it. This is a great family owned Mexican restaurant. The owners take pride in their menu and offering. The owner has years of experience working in large chains, and brings this expertise to this local spot. Casual, comfortable environment. The food is prepared well and beautifully plated, service is fast and friendly. A good selection of tequilas are available. They offer a .99 cent tasting glass of their house margarita, which is perfect size for those that have to get back to work. I had the Sopes, which were piled so high that i had to use knife and fork to eat them. Chips are thin, light, and crispy. Salsa was fresh and flavorful. Chips and salsa are some the best I've had in the area. Chips are crispy and not greasy, salsa is flavorful with just the right amount of spice. I had the crispy tacos, definitely preferred the chicken, but the ground beef was good also (just slightly greasy, but had lots of flavor). The waitress informed us that she had To give us 1 check for the 10 of us. Told her that was unsatisfactory. She would not give us separate checks for couples. We had to sit there & figure out our own checks but pay with 1 credit card. I complained to the manager & told her we were disappointed but to no avail. She said they can't give separate checks because they are busy. There was no one else in the entire restaurant. I told her we wouldn't go back & she could have cared less. I ordered the Balsas Burger and quickly came to the realization that it was one of the best burgers I have ever had...I kid you not! Very inconsistent and was bothered by us when we had an issue on a take out order where they didn't even cook the steak. It's been a while since I've ordered there due to it and wasn't sure how to write this. Their replacement they made us had half the meat.
