I moved from California to Washington and needed to do the "moved to Washington?" Thing of getting a WA drivers license and updating registration/license plates. This office is specifically for the registration/license plates portion of that process. I was literally in and out within 5 minutes - insane for someone who is used to CA DMV wait times! I came in with my CA registration, my new WA drivers license, had to walk out to check my odometer (do that when you arrive in their specific strip mall parking lot and save yourself some time) and by the time I came back in with the reading and signed a few papers it had been 5 minutes and I was heading out the door with new plates. I got here about 20 minutes to closing, so probably not a surprise there was a long line. All but one window open, which is good, but only one worker able to turn over customers. The other slots all with the same person being helped until my turn came up. I waited around 15 minutes and hoped I would get my tabs before they closed for the day. Then a few windows opened up, all at the same time. The customers that had been getting helped for 20 minutes or more got processed. My turn at last! But when I walked up, the worker at the window helping me decides to yell out "anyone else here just for tabs? I can do both of you at once. It will be quick!" So she can help the woman who got in line after me, and I get to have a stranger standing 1 inch from me. I have no idea why. There were several windows now open, and only 1 in line behind me. While I had to remove all the credit cards from my wallet to get the drivers license out. I hope she didn't grab one, she was certainly close enough to. Leaning over the top of me because I had been standing in front of the window. From there - the employee ordered me to sign the registration - I need to do that to get the tabs? Never happened before - I've always just signed at home. She saw me hesitate and then asks me "Don't you know where to sign?" Yes, I know. I am just baffled as to why I need to do this now. She did not miss one chance to offer a snide reply to me, yet just handed the form to the person she had come up to join me in line. Did not order her to sign the registration. Offered nothing rude, just smiled and gave her her tabs. In hindsight I should have just told this worker I would wait for the next window. Perhaps she doesn't like people who are not Caucasian? I don't know what else could have generated this odd & negative response from her. I've never had a complaint about this licensing office before - but after this I'm sure any other place offering tabs would be just as good and more than likely better. read more

I renewed my tabs online in mid-April and chose Ballard Licensing to mail them to me because in the past they have always been very quick to mail the new tabs, even though I now live in Lake City. I still haven't received them (it's now May 29th) and have left two voicemails asking for someone to call me to give me a status update. Just called once more and the voicemail box is full. My tabs expire next month and I was trying to do the right thing by being on top of this. This is not good customer service, especially when one can be ticketed for expired tabs and I've given plenty of time for renewal. read more

Vehicle licensing and titling (NOT drivers licensing - that's different) is done by independently owned and operated businesses in Washington state. I really like this office. They're super fast and efficient despite being in one of the most densely populated neighborhoods of the region. And the employees are nice and genuinely seem to like each other and not hate their jobs, probably because they aren't dealing with grouchy customers who've been waiting for hours all the time. They don't do appointments here as far as I know, but honestly you don't really need one. Longest I've waited in line is about 30 minutes, and it's usually less than that (granted, I've only ever come on a week day). They do title boats here and they also do the "quick" titles. The office is also really nicely decorated. Weird, I know. They've got loads of local artwork as well as some fun local seattle sports memorabilia. Makes what would otherwise be a boring 1970s office space kind of fun to look at. For getting there, it's easiest to enter through the parking lot side on 56th, rather than the Market side. The parking lot has a few designated spots for 30 min of free parking, paid after that. I think it's a Diamond lot (saw 2 parking patrollers in the blue Diamond jackets), so you're probably better off paying for Seattle city street parking or going a few blocks north for free street parking and walking. read more

Just got back from spending about 30 minutes here. Had to get multiple vehicles transferred over and Annie really was patient, organized, and took great care to make sure I was up to speed with all of the forms and requirements for transferring different types of vehicles. Awesome experience, and thanks again Annie! Beware, it's all paid parking (even their tiny lot) with the exception of a handful of 30 minute stalls available to customers of Ballard Square (which this office is party to). read more

The staff were incredibly kind, patient, and knowledgeable, and I never once felt rushed or like an inconvenience, which is rare at places like this. Walked up to the door during business hours and has a sign on the door saying the business is closed due to a break in with no ETA on when they will be open again or any resources/contact info. Have tried calling multiple times only for it to go unanswered. Here's hoping my snapshot of the sign is proof enough for the city should I be cited for expired tabs that I ordered for pick up at this location and now have no way of obtaining. I hate to leave a one-star review but I'm hoping by doing so this will get to the proper person to help me figure out how I'm supposed to get my vehicle tabs. read more

In terms of getting your licensing done it's a pretty great place because it's open later than most licensing places and it's way way faster most people don't know it's even there. But I will say I ordered a specialized plate and they didn't do a very good job of letting me know it was going to be Extremely long before I picked it up. It's been four months now and I still don't have my license plate, which is kind of a bugger so they could've done a better job of that. And then I called them last month and it took him about an hour and a half to even find out where my license plate was. But they were all really nice and it's not crowd. read more

I renewed my tabs online through Washington DoL and chose to have them mailed to me via Ballard Licensing. My registration certificate arrived in an OPEN, UNSEALED envelope! The adhesive on the envelope is still new and the envelope is untorn, which means it was never sealed. Anyone could have viewed my personal information & VIN, and anyone could have taken my tabs. Tried to call and report this directly to the company but no one is answering the phone & their voicemail is full. Really unimpressed with this level of carelessness. Won't be using Ballard Licensing again next year. read more

Wouldn't recommend this place. I didn't have a positive experience at all. It's dirty and the lady I spoke to refused to read my paperwork as soon as she found out I was a veteran. Instead she tried to make me go down some rabbit hole of gathering a bunch of stuff that I didn't actually need. I can't speak for everyone else there but I can say don't go to the lady on the far right unless you want to be sent away, come back and still not be helped. Don't waste your time here. I would give 0 stars if I could. I am trying to transfer ownership of a car from NC. I went here 5 times trying to get my car registered. Each time I had the manager who was rude and promised me the next time would be my last, eventually I went to the Rainier licensing agency and not only were they incredibly helpful they informed me that the documents they had given me to help me register my car would actually increase the amount of taxes I would have to pay on my car. So yea, never go here and I hope the manager who runs it had a fun time trying to get me to pay an extra 1000 on my car read more

Very nice people when you come into the office. Once you pay your money they totally forget about you. They have very sub- standard recordkeeping. When I called in to check on my license in the status of my vehicle registration, they say that I'm not in their system. So be sure to have your VIN number because they won't even recognize you by name. Who walks around with their VIN number on hand at all times? Your name is a part of your payment when you use your credit card or debit card so why would not they not store your information at least by your name so that they can recall your records? That just makes absolutely no sense to me. I filed for my registration months ago I have not gotten any response. They seem not to notice that there is a problem. Just returned from picking up my fast tabs: the smart choice in a pandemic, least amount of contact. BUT NO!, they let a man in before me without a mask who used the fast tabs window, put everyone at risk, and did not sanitize the window station afterward. If you have a REAL health condition that prohibits you from wearing a mask under the ADA, you are entitled to ask for reasonable accommodations. I rarely write reviews, but this place is so good at what they do, I am compelled to. I had an issue with the title of a car that had been imported from Canada and registered in other states before arriving in WA. It had been 6 years of me trying to figure out how to get it registered, 6 years of calling the DOL and getting conflicting information or getting sent on wild goose chases for new information or documentation. On a recommendation from my brother, I gave these folks a call. In one visit on a Friday afternoon, I walked out with registration, WA plates, and the promise of a title in the mail in 6-8 weeks. Unbelievable. I would drive out of my way to use this office (and I did - from about 30 minutes away) because they are so good at what they do, and so friendly about the way they do it. The line can get long at predictable hours of the day, but it moves reasonably fast. If you have any issues with vehicle registration or titling, do yourself a favor and head up to this unassuming office in Ballard. read more

Here's the most important thing you need to know. If you buy a used car from a private owner the owner didn't charge you sales tax. So when you go to register the vehicle in your name you're going to pay taxes. Make sure you can. Reduce the price if you have to so your taxes isn't. I wish I knew that. My day just got ruined I had to cough up a bundle. Oh well I got the car I wanted it's all good. There's parking in the back. Didn't know that either it's Ballard so I had to find free parking. I stopped by to confirm that my car registration tabs were indeed 450 bucks like the website said... sadly it was. If you pay in person there is a base fee for debit transactions and a 3% charge for credit card transactions. I decided to pay for my tabs online (here is no fee) and as soon as I hit he submit button, they were able to look up my transaction and give me my tabs. When I went there weren't many people so I was in and out. There is 30 minute free parking for Ballard licensing customers but make sure you look at the signs; its limited to certain parking spots. read more
