Buffet bar

Atmosphere: We went to Bali Hai pre-COVID lockdowns. Bali Hai had a large yet simple dining area with a buffet bar where you could stack ingredients onto your bowl. In the back of the restaurant, you would drop off your bowl to the chefs who would grill up your chosen ingredients! Service: The service was always friendly and quick. We never had to wait long for our food to come out, and they brought out your order to the table for you! Food: The customization at Bali Hai was great. We each ordered a bowl (one with house sauce and one with combination sauce level 3) and went to a buffet bar to stack our plates. The selection of meats and vegetables were great, and the cooking was fresh. Both sauces were yummy and had just the right levels of flavor and spice! Overall: For the price, Bali Hai is a must-try especially for Duke students. We will note that our review is based on pre-COVID lockdown conditions when the food was priced by bowl (instead of by weight). Nonetheless, Bali Hai's food is fresh and comes hot in minutes!

Love this place. It's so good. It's a Mongolian grill. Go fill your bowl with the raw vegetables, fruit, meat and the grill master grills it with the spices to your 1-10 heat level. I do a 6 which is the most heat level I can stand. I fill my bowl with tomatoes, pineapple, eggplant, zucchini, and turkey. You can pay extra and get shrimp or scallops or other tasty options. The service is fast and accurate. Only get what you can eat - no takeouts on the leftovers.

Ah, my go-to place back in undergrad when I'd meet up with dukies. With fond memories aside, I can't give this place more than two stars. For the price you pay, this place is technically a steal. I love the fact that you can add whatever you want and show your competitive side by trying to stack your bowl(s) as high as possible. Yup you have the choice of filling up either 1 or 2 bowls with as much meat and veggies as possible. The spices/sauces they use is something special. It's to the point where you think about it if you haven't had Bali hai for too long! However, they are consistently the worst with customer service. The combo of disrespectful owners and rude servers really can agitate you by the end of your meal. If you stack too well (aka too much food in your bowl), depending on the owners' mood, they'll kick you out, no joke! Also, if you stay even a little past closing, the server will legit tell you he's leaving so you better too! The atmosphere is that of a cafeteria- most definitely not fancy. You can order your dish however spicy you'd like it (on a scale of 1 to 10). The only problem is that the scale seems to vary depending on the cook haha Also, since they cook everyone's dishes on one big grill, I often get pieces of other people's bowls. I.e. I got a few pieces of pineapple in mine this time around when I didn't put any in my bowl. This concerns me because what if I were allergic to pineapples? (Someone call ems!!!) Overall, the reason why people come back is because of their sauce. Whatever it is, it's saving them.

I wouldn't say its one of the best places i've ate at, but its definitely one of my favorite places to eat at. The thing i like about this place is that you get as much as you can eat. No its not an all you can eat buffet but its kind of like that. The menu is very simple. Pick one or two bowl, pick a sauce and start piling as much food as you can.. I've been going to bali hai for about 4 years and this place has yet to disappoint me. The waiters can be rude at time but thats fine. As you come here more you will begin to understand the art of 'stacking'. The more you stack the more you will get. I usually go with the D6 for medium spiciness. If you are looking for a high protein meal, look no further because you can stack all the meat you can get here. Overall, i say this place is worth trying and eating at every so often.

My son loves this establishment. It is a place where we bond. The food is fresh, the place is clean and the staff is polite.

Parking couldn't have been easier. We found a space right out front in the lot off 9th Street and walked straight in. It was a quiet Thursday afternoon, so we were seated immediately. The dining room has an elegant, relaxed feel, and with only a few other diners it made for a peaceful lunch. Lunch for two came to about $80 plus tax and tip, making this one of the more upscale lunches we've had recently. We ordered: * Crispy Brussels Sprouts * Shrimp Dumplings (6) * Mongolian Beef * Grilled Lemongrass Hanger Steak Salad * Unsweetened iced tea The Food The Crispy Brussels Sprouts were a great start. They were crisp on the outside without being overcooked, and the mint, peanuts, and pickled onions added both texture and freshness. It was also a large enough portion for leftovers. The Shrimp Dumplings were excellent. The flavor was outstanding, and the Thai chili oil, garlic, scallions, and sesame worked beautifully together. My only criticism was the portion size. At six small dumplings, they felt a little pricey for what you receive. The Mongolian Beef was probably the best value of the meal. The beef had a nice sear while remaining tender inside, and the portion was generous enough that we had leftovers for another meal. It had a nice overall flavor as well. The Grilled Lemongrass Hanger Steak Salad was good, but not quite at the same level. The steak had good flavor, but the cut itself was somewhat chewy. The accompanying rice was simply prepared and didn't add much to the dish. The flavors were enjoyable, although slightly sweeter than my wife prefers. Service Service was excellent. Our server took the time to walk us through each dish, explaining ingredients, spice levels, and preparation so we could choose items that fit our tastes. We especially appreciated her knowledge of the menu and her attentiveness throughout the meal, my iced tea was never empty. Overall Juju offers an attractive setting, excellent service, and several very well-executed dishes. Our biggest challenge was simply that much of the lunch menu leans toward spicier offerings than we typically enjoy. While we probably wouldn't return specifically for lunch, the dinner menu appears to offer a much wider variety of choices that fit our tastes. We'll likely be back to give dinner a try.

I came in around 1 on on a Saturday and there was maybe one other customer in the restaurant. Not a great sign. I didn't get a menu, I was just shown directly to a booth. I had seen online it was 13 dollars for all you can eat so that was my expectation. As I walked, I saw there were were cleaning supplies on different tables. Piece of advice... thank you for cleaning, but don't leave the chemicals and rags out in plain sight. I went to the buffet three times. Food was fine, standard for this kind of restaurant, though I wish they had the seeded bread that other Mongolian places have. And I was charged 26 bucks for the food. Turns out they charge one amount for one bowl, another amount for two bowls, and another amount for all you can eat. I've never heard of a place doing this. I did find a menu by the sushi area and it reflected the 10 and 13 dollar prices for the buffet. I mentioned it to my waiter and he said those are menus from before covid. Ok... that was 6 years ago and it was over 4 years ago, if I'm being kind. They have 6 plus year old menus there! I felt really misled. I won't be returning.

We just found our new favorite Chinese restaurant in Durham!…read more We placed an online order for pickup and ordered the Beef Chow Fun and General Tso's Chicken, and we were delightfully surprised by how good everything was! The General Tso's Chicken had a wonderful taste and just the right amount of crispiness, which I absolutely love. It came with fried rice that was delicious and perfectly cooked without being greasy. The Beef Chow Fun was equally impressive, with well-seasoned noodles and incredibly tender beef with a slight crispness. Everything was cooked just right, and we couldn't have been happier with our meal. We're already looking forward to ordering again. If you're looking for great Chinese takeout in Durham, give Shanghai a try!

Also, since my husband and I can't eat rice we requested noodles with our entree and I was told outright that they could not do that so we ordered soup and an egg roll. It was my fault that I didn't tell them to serve our soup and egg roll as an entree as it was served right away and our guests food arrived 20 minutes later. I doubt I will be going back any time soon.

The staff are incredibly friendly and hardworking, and the atmosphere feels both welcoming and authentic. All items are affordable and with reasonable prices! It's the only legit dim sum place near Chapel Hill/Carrboro, about a 25-minute drive for us--and we gladly make the trip almost every week. We simply can't get enough of their food! Warning: Everything on their menu is dangerously addictive. You've been warned! Our Favorites 2. Pork Dumpling (Siu Mai / Siomai) -- Steamed pork in a wonton wrapper, perfectly juicy with just the right balance of pork and vegetables in every bite. A delicious classic done right. 6. Beef Onion Dumpling in Chili Sauce -- One of the best dumplings we've had--and we've been to dim sum spots all over the world! The beef is flavorful and juicy, wrapped in a thin, perfectly chewy skin. The chili sauce complements the filling beautifully without overpowering it. Generous portion, amazing value, flawless execution. 9. Steamed BBQ Pork Bun -- Soft, fluffy buns filled with mildly sweet BBQ pork. Comforting, classic, and delicious every time. 11. Egg Yolk Bun -- Lightly sweet custard filling inside soft steamed buns. The perfect bite of dessert to end your dim sum feast. 16. Bean Skin Stuffed with Pork -- Juicy, lightly seasoned pork wrapped in delicate bean skin. Flavorful but not overpowering--simple and satisfying. 27. Crispy Shrimp Ball -- Juicy and lightly seasoned shrimp goodness inside a crispy ball. They disappeared into the void of my stomach as soon as they touched our table. 28. Crispy Taro Puff with Chicken -- Think of these as bite-sized empanadas with savory, well-seasoned chicken inside--like the best mini chicken pot pies! Crispy, flavorful, and completely addictive. I could easily eat 30 of these! 41. Crispy Beef Onion Pot Sticker -- Pan-fried to golden perfection for that satisfying crunch. The beef and chives inside are juicy and flavorful, and the portions are generous. I dream about these dumplings when I'm asleep. Absolute perfection. Take all my money! The Finishing Touch Dim sum is meant to be enjoyed with tea, and they offer a simple traditional brew that pairs beautifully with every dish. If there's one downside--it's that they're only open Friday through Sunday. We wish they were open all week! Everything on their menu is so good! Best Dimsum and service in Durham!
