had an excellent experience here, which is not something I say lightly after past dental trauma. I went more than two years without seeing a dentist and came in feeling anxious. There was zero shame, just kindness and professionalism from the moment I arrived. My hygienist, Mackenzie, was truly wonderful. She explained every step before she did it, checked in often, and worked with so much patience and care. The cleaning was thorough but very gentle, and I felt respected and safe the entire time. The dentist and staff were equally kind and attentive, and it's clear this office values patient comfort, not just speed. Even though I needed significant work done, the experience was calm, supportive, and far less uncomfortable than I expected. If you have dental anxiety, past trauma, or have been avoiding the dentist, I cannot recommend this office highly enough. I'm actually looking forward to my next visit, which is something I never thought I'd say about a dental appointment. I went in for my pre scheduled appointment yesterday with my regular (10 year!) hygienist and was greeting by a new employee. I didn't take that too well to begin with as the whole reason I started going there is due to severe anxiety of being in the dentist chair. I reluctantly let the girl clean my teeth and I will tell you she did a fantastic job. And when I went home and looked my teeth look really great ! I hope I didn't leave claw marks on the arms of the chair lol. The only reason I only gave 4 stars is that I have not received any dental work from the new dentist yet. What Happened to the Balcones Dental We Loved? My husband and I have been loyal patients of Balcones Dental for over four years. We've always appreciated the high level of care--especially from Dr. Lindsay, who once worked wonders on a tricky crown issue for me. That's why the decline in our recent experiences has been so disappointing. Back in January, I had my first appointment with Dr. Shaefer and found her to be impersonal and curt. My husband had a similar experience and left feeling the same way. Still, I decided to give her another chance during my July 2025 visit--hoping it was just an off day. Unfortunately, it only confirmed our concerns. I arrived expecting my usual hygienist, Michelle, only to be told she was no longer with the practice--something no one had communicated ahead of time. As someone who needs a bit more TLC when it comes to dental care, I was caught off guard. I explained to the new hygienist, Cayman, that I would need hand scaling due to sensitive teeth--something Michelle always accommodated. Cayman questioned why, then told me they'd have to "assess my gums," which didn't exactly put me at ease. She then added that Michelle had probably been "cutting corners," which I found incredibly unprofessional. Michelle was excellent--thorough, gentle, and kind. The cleaning itself was underwhelming, and when Dr. Shaefer entered, she didn't introduce herself, didn't say hello, and seemed in a rush to move things along. The entire appointment felt cold and impersonal. It wasn't until later that I was told the practice had been sold and most of the original staff had left--yet no one thought to communicate this to patients until a generic email after my appointment. It's disappointing to see a once-warm, patient-centered office turn into something so disconnected. And it's telling that only the positive reviews get acknowledged now--Dr. Lindsay always responded to both the good and the bad. Sadly, we'll be finding a new dental provider. We truly wish Dr. Lindsay and his original team all the best--they were the heart of what made this office special. read more

My cleaning appt was set for August, but someone from the office called me saying that they had some open spots for July, I accepted to move my appt to July. I was very disappointed to realize that they were trying to trick me to get additional work done, I could perceive that they were trying to simply reach a financial goal. Right after I lied on the dental chair, the dental assistant started asking me question about what work had previously been done on my teethes, and she started offering me additional services. After the X-rays were done, instead of proceeding to do the regular cleaning....they tried to force me to do a deep cleaning...(regular clening was not an option at that moment) Do I need it?... I don't know, but the payment for this work was going to be tripled of a regular cleaning. I felt very uncomfortable, and after they wasted almost an hour with me, I also wasted my time there. I had to leave and could not agree to get anything done at that moment... Obviously, they charged me for a regular service even though, at the end, they only provided me the X-rays service. I'm not going back there... I don't trust them anymore. read more

An excellent experience with all involved. Scheduling was a breeze once I called their office. (Two online messages that I sent to them never got through to the right person.) The front office staff is exceptionally friendly when you check in. (And if you do the very minimal paperwork online before you come, all you need to do is literally tell them you're there.) My hygienist, Michell, was exceptionally patient, kind, and thorough with my exam and cleaning. And I'm definitely a fan of Dr. Lindsay. He's warm, experienced, and very practical in his approaches. I've been going here for about 9 years now. I've had a lot of work done to my teeth in that time and many cleanings. I absolutely love my dentists and the rest of the staff. The hygienists have always been really friendly and knowledgeable and the receptionists are quick to address everyone and even some patients by name once they walk in the door. There aren't enough positive things to say here. The staff is absolutely fantastic, docs definitely know what they're doing, and the location is fairly easy to get to. I have a husband with severe dental anxiety issues, and they were super kind and worked with him to overcome his fears. I also have a medically fragile child, and the team worked closely with his other doctors to make sure his cleanings and fillings were completely safe. I have been going to Balcones Dental for almost 2 years now. I receive routine cleaning done twice a year, had a night guard made there, and had 1 cavity filled. I ask a lot of questions and my hygienist as well as Dr Johnson always have intelligent answers. Dental visits are not usually a happy or pleasant visit. You get bad news, there's pain involved, pressure to get work done, etc... My visit at Balcones Dental was none of the above. The staff was super friendly and professional, there was no pressure to "do more", there was no pain involved...in any way. I just found a new dentist and glad I went! Update: In ALL of my dentist visits in the past...there's been the "surprise bill" from the insurance about something that you now owe that wasn't covered. On the good side, it's a pleasant (if chilly) office, with friendly staff. They have some impressive equipment. They do sedation dentistry for people with dentist phobias. The bad thing is I think this office is way too aggressive when it comes to dental work, maybe criminally so. Because they do sedation dentistry, my wife went here several times, and had a LOT of costly work done. We sucked up and went along, because we were aware her teeth weren't all that great. Now I wish we had gone elsewhere. After I got tired of driving all the way to Cedar Park to my old dentist, I came here to try it out. They said I needed two crowns AND some fillings! While in there I heard them tell another patient he was in need of a crown as well! Now, I've had great teeth, and in the last thirty years the only work I've needed was to replace some fillings I got when I was 12. After my initial shock, I got suspicious and sought not one but two more opinions, from another area dentist and my old one. They both said my teeth were fine, no work needed of any kind. It's been a year now, and I go to another dentist. My teeth? Still fine. Stay away from these people. They want your money. read more

I've had bad experiences with dentists in the past, dating from childhood. This has probably affected the lack of care I exercised in dental hygiene. After many years of not going to a dentist, I saw an ad for sedation dentistry. I've been going to them ever since! They are very gentle and caring and competent, as well. After getting two of the crowns done on my teeth (that were "probably unnecessary" as I was later told by another dentist that is a 5 star on yelp) they told me that I needed to get one more done on the other side and fill 2 more cavities. I have never missed a 6 month dentist appointment in my life and being told this much work needed to be done all of the sudden struck me as strange. I put this work on hold until I saw a new dentist. During this time I also had a permanent retainer removed, and I paid for a new Invisiline retainer. After waiting a few weeks I returned for my fitting only for them to hand me a wired retainer and not the one I paid for. They insisted 3 TIMES that I was wrong and that the wired one was what I paid for. After some kind of conversations away from my chair they came back and apologized telling me that someone wrote it down wrong... Makes me wonder what else could have been "written down wrong" Another strange thing was that for the first year I would go in and speak with and be quality checked by Dr Lindsey every time. At some point another lady who I was never introduced to took over his roll for my last two visits. I was never told where Dr Lindsey was or what was going on. Jim G Tyree, DDS was the next dentist I saw and I made specific requests for him to thoroughly examine all the work previously done by my Balcones, and to pay special attention to the area where Balcones told me I'd need another crown and fillings. He showed me x-rays, photos and live video of it all and told me that everything looked great. His only recommendation was to do a seal on one tooth that was starting to lose it's previous sealant. I wish the other two friends that used to go to Balcones would write reviews here. Their experiences were less than favorable as well. TLDR: Beware of unnecessary and invasive work. Update: Today I got a root canal. And it was tedious. But it was *not* painful or difficult. They were well-prepared and organized to perform the root canal, and the hygenist warned me of every change in noise or sensation before it happened. Even better, they numbed only the affected tooth, and so I am not drooling or talking funny. They also offered for me to go to the lab where the crown is made, so I can get the color of the crown custom-matched to my teeth, at no extra charge. I told my hygenist about the horror stories I'd been told leading up to my root canal, and she remarked that a root canal should never be a very big deal, and if it is then you need a new dentist. read more

In 2011, Dr. Lindsay placed two crowns and one onlay in my mouth. After less than three years, 100% of the work has failed, forcing me to get corrective dental work on the same teeth in order to fix the work that was done incorrectly by Dr. Lindsay. Some background: a few months ago a large portion of the onlay sheared off, leaving a jagged surface and damaged tooth that now requires a crown. (I was not even eating anything hard or abrasive at that time!) While preparing for a root canal on the tooth (that was potentially caused by the large onlay) my current dentist remarked that there was substantial greying along the gumline and underneath the surface of both porcelain crowns that had been placed there. The assessment was that they were experiencing "leakage" as a result of not being properly sealed at the time of placement in Dr. Lindsay's office in 2011. The crowns will have to be removed and new crowns will have to be made, incurring substantial out-of-pocket costs (to the tune of a few thousand dollars). Having all of the work fail in less than three years is unacceptable. I am now forced to have each tooth re-done, which is causing me great pain and inconvenience. The office offered to fix the crowns (though I now live out of state) but I am not comfortable having Dr. Lindsay fix the work that he botched to begin with. I asked for a refund of the money that I paid out-of-pocket (because I'm now having to pay for the work to re-do the crowns) and they would not even consider a refund or partial repayment. The entire experience has been incredibly traumatic and debilitating and I would NOT recommend Balcones Dental. read more

I grew up with the best dentist ever and then he retired. So I've been trying to find the right dentist since then and have visited several other places in Austin. I met this group at a networking event and really fell in love with the people. Then I visited the place to leave some goodies and same thing--everyone was wonderful! So today I went for a cleaning and it reminds me of my old dentist. They were VERY thorough, seemed to really care and didn't try to sell me stuff I know I don't need. Every other place I've been has done this since my former dentist. I look forward to returning in 3 months and will plan to go every 4-6 months after that! read more

Two nights ago, I broke a tooth while clenching while sleeping (I have some serious medical issues that have left me dealing with extreme pain at night) When I discovered the broken tooth, I called my family dentist, Dr Gotun. He was on vacation in Norway, so I asked the office staff for help. They referred me to Dr Lindsay at Balcones Dental. I called Balcones Dental, explained what happened and they got me an appointment that day with the doctor. Even though I wasn't a regular patient, they saw me right away and treated me as though I were a long time patient there. It was such a nice experience! My wife and kids were with me because I can't drive. My wife was able to nurse our infant while waiting. The kids had some room to play with some toys while they waited. Everything was pleasant and the people were very patient and kind there. The dental assistant was very good at explaining what I could expect and when the doctor came in, he took care of my problem right away and explained my options clearly. The dental assistant and the doctor seem to make a great team. Recommended! read more

This practice's sole goal is to exhaust your dental insurance for the year. The result is invasive and unnecessary work being done. Case in point: Like so many others mention, I went in for my first appointment they found heaps of work that needed to be done. I was very surprised. I keep up with my dental appointments. They came back with a list of root canals, and crowns, and fillings. Apparently all my old silver fillings had to come out and new ones put in, and those required root canals. And some of my older composite fillings needed to be replaced as well. They mapped out a plan over the next few years to get everything sorted and like new. They take care of two of my old silver fillings because these are critical, they say. I've never had a root canal before, so I don't know what to expect. The temporary crowns pop off repeatedly. I end up with a crazy case of vertigo for weeks following the procedure. It takes a long time for the crowns to come in. The new crowns don't seat correctly and it takes a few revisits to get them filed so my bite is correct. Everyone is very nice, so I'm assuming this is how things are supposed to go. I'm done for the year - maxed out my insurance. They say next year they will handle the next round. Great. Then I get a call from them a few weeks later that it appears I still have coverage available and I should come in and get a third crown. I tell them I don't believe that's correct, they need to call my insurance company and confirm that I haven't exhausted the benefits. They call back and confirm that I still have coverage. That should have been my first clue that I should have called insurance myself. Like a fool, I go in and get the third crown done. They submit to insurance and guess what? I have exhausted my insurance for the year and now I am 100% responsible for the cost of that crown. I call their billing department to find out how they "confirmed" my benefits and yet I have exhausted them. I am told that they didn't know my company had two different dental plans so they just assumed I had more benefits available. So they LIED. They didn't CONFIRM anything and I was on the hook for the full amount. They offered their handy payment plan, but I didn't want anything more to do with this dental office. I ended up having to cash out some company stock to cover the cost of the procedure. They are not honest in their assessment of dental work. They will do procedures simply to maximize insurance billings, whether you need them or not. I have moved on to another dentist (5 stars on Yelp and Google, BTW) and they have confirmed that I don't need any of my remaining old silver fillings removed at this time and the other composite fillings that Balcones Dental had slated for replacement are also not needed. There's no reason to visit this dental office. There are far better and far more honest practices out there. read more

Dr. Lindsey and staff are fabulous!! I had a bad experience else where in town and choose Balcones Dental because they offered a free first time exam and xrays. While I did wait 45 minutes the first visit (not complaining because it was free!) when I came back to have some cavities filled I was taken back immediately and done within 30 minutes! Balcones Dental has awesome customer service, I received a thank you note after my first visit and a phone call the day after my cavities were filled. Everyone is super sweet there. I never felt pressured into having any work done and the cost of my cavities was very reasonable. I highly recommend Balcones Dental! read more

I would just like to say that I have been to balcones dental I have been charged for a service I did not receive nor attend.Dr Larry Lindsey had operated on me pulling a couple of teeth and doing an upper lip surgery or forget what they call it halfway through the procedure the Novocaine wore off and as I was telling him he told me to tough through it and kept going when I left my jaw was black and blue and swollen my upper lip did not heal in the right time and now I have to deal with my tip of my nose my upper lip and my gum inside is all numb because he cut a nerve and he said he was concerned about that at 6 months now when I asked him what do we do about that he tells me I need to deal with it it may take 5 years for the feeling to come back I said so what do I do in the next 5 years learn how to deal with it is what he says they have canceled on me three times when I was in the parking lot during this covid and total unprofessionalism and no bedside manner of a professional doctor which I don't believe that he is he refuses to discuss any matter with me I told him I wanted to have a discussion with him and no service is done and they put me in a chair and started grinding on the teeth that I kept telling him were wrong they refused to send the teeth back and make them right so now I have no dental for 2 years I've been dealing with them no teeth I'm numb on my nose and my upper lip and my gum from that surgery he did to cut the nerve. If you have been there and have regular dental work that's great I'm sure he's good at that but if you need dentures or implants or something like a tooth pulled I suggest you find a completely different doctor because this one will put you through unnecessary pain that you don't have to go through charging you for things that you never even received unbelievable! His staff is so rude and inconsiderate and the only one that did any good there is no longer there so take your business someplace else Don't go through the pain and all this crap that I've gone through and get nowhere with them but they want money but they don't want to fix the problem so good luck if you go there read more

I am a student without dental insurance so I was looking for a good dentist who wouldn't cost me an arm and a leg. I searched Yelp to find that Balcones Dental does offer FREE x-rays and exam during your initial visit, and you're not required to do a cleaning! I knew something was wrong with a particular tooth as I had small holes in the top of it so I scheduled an appointment. I went to my appointment a couple days later. The staff were extremely friendly and professional. They took me back within 10 minutes of filling out my paperwork and got the x-rays taken within 5 minutes of that. The technician did an exam as I explained to her my problem tooth. Turns out my tooth was damaged from grinding my teeth, a simple fix with a nighttime mouth guard. The dentist, Dr. Lindsay came and did an exam and talked to me about my teeth health (I didn't have any cavities) as well as what exactly happens when you grind your teeth at night. He was extremely personable and friendly! My insurance doesn't start for another few months so until then they recommended a night guard from CVS (one you boil and fit yourself). Four days after my appointment I received a had written thank-you note in the mail from their office! Talk about customer service! I will definitely be recommending them to all my friends! read more

Excellent staff. Clean and relaxing office. I had not been to the dentist in quite a while and they put me at ease. Could not have asked for more with my cleaning and general experience. The staff did not seem rushed or eager to suggest unneeded procedures. A couple specifics: the plaque scraper with a built-in water mister is awesome! My review would have been one star, but I gave an extra star for Dr. Lindsay and Dr. Cantu, as well as Shanita. Both are nice doctors who took the time to talk to me, and Shanita was super sweet and made me feel at ease. But, I do have some gripes. Strike 1: I went in for the first visit exam. Took x-rays, talked to the intake person (can't remember her name), and spoke with Dr. Lindsay about a spot on my x-ray that appeared to be a really deep cavity. He recommended a root canal. Okay, fine. Got a payment plan for that, scheduled an appointment performed by Dr. Cantu. Turns out I didn't need one, since the cavity wasn't as deep as they thought. Awesome. I go to leave, and I'm handed another payment plan "for my next set of cavities." Excuse me, what? I was never told about more cavities. Okay, fine, whatever. I go through the next round, and after that is done, I'm handed YET ANOTHER payment plan for another round! WTF! I still haven't been back after this. Balcones keeps calling me, I don't answer. Strike 2: After the second round of cavity fillings, I pay with my card and get a receipt. I get a call a couple days later from the office, asking me how I plan to pay. WHAT? I told her I paid with my card, I can send her the receipt to prove it. "Oh, that's what I thought, but someone didn't put it on the ledger." Thanks for the heart attack! Strike 3: I had an appointment at 2:20. I get a phone call around 1:45, saying that the appointment before mine cancelled and would I like to come in early? Sure! I hop in the car, arrive by 2. I'm told they'll be with me soon. I watch some crap HGTV show while waiting until Shanita comes to get me. When does she come get me? 2:20. Go figure. On top of that, one of the teeth that had a filling is now super sensitive to cold/hot things. Looking for a new dentist at the moment. On the flip side of things, my fiance comes here twice a year for cleanings, and he hasn't had any problems (and he feels bad since I've had all this happen since he referred me...but not his fault). So, probably a good place if you don't need dental work. read more

As a new patient and the way the process flowed I'm giving it a 5. The office offers a warm feel along with the welcoming staff. I was brought in by Lisa who discussed with me everything that would be taking place as well as offered me sedation I'd necessary. After the xrays and teeth cleaning Dr Lindsay came in and explained everything clearly and was not rushed in any way. I will say I read some of the reviews before I came in and if Bob Cole from KOKE says it's a place he would use, I trust him! I recently fired my last dentist and I feel pretty lucky to have found an office I feel I can trust. read more

I cannot say enough amazing things about Balcones Dental. My husband (and entire family) has been going there for a while. Then there is me...I was terrified of the dentist and had not been to the dentist in 15 years due to a previous unpleasant experience at another practice. Everyone there was patient and kind with me when I decided I was ready to take care of my dental needs. They were patient, explained everything, and put my mind at ease. My care started about six weeks ago...and I am actually looking forward to going back, knowing that dental health is directly related to overall health. If you are terrified, as I was, I strongly recommend this practice. The office staff are amazing as well. Lisa is the most kind hearted person I know, and Michell is an amazing hygienist. I have not actually completed any of the suggested work with BD yet. I am in the process of getting some funding to assist. It is expensive and I have some bad teeth. Multiple trips to different dentist's have confirmed that my teeth need work. So, I followed the advice of the 2nd opinion folks and turns out BD is detecting the same bad teeth. Here is the catch, Dr. Lindsay is actually saving me money by recommending I lose the teeth rather than try and root canal/crown etc.... a pair of teeth that may not survive the procedure. I'm all for it. ATTENTION: Here is the best part about visiting BD. THE STAFF IS AWESOME! FUNNY! I feel like I'm walking into a great ROM. COM. when I visit. There are tears and laughter every time. I needed a root canal and picked Balcones Dental because I heard an ad on the radio. What a WONDERFUL EXPERIENCE! The whole practice has been so nice and there wasn't one person I encounter that wasn't helpful. Going to the dentist is not my favorite thing to do and I am a white knuckle patience. This place is amazing, when I moved to Austin I never found a decent dentist and then I broke a tooth and had to. So glad I found them just had a root canal a few hours ago and they are great I fell asleep in the chair a few times wile they were working on me. It's been a long time since I've been to a dental office, my anxiety stemming from a bad experience. So, my husband ensured me, as he is a long time patient, that they are the best crew. They are not judgmental, and highly concerned about pain control with our dental choices. I am convinced and very satisfied with my first session. The treatment plan suggested is thoroughly explained. Dr. Johnson is great with his explanations and the staff are all very professional in explaining any detail. Amy did my first deep cleaning and I have to admit with gas and Valium to ease my nerves, she made the experience enjoyable. She was gentle and thorough with the process, and constantly checked in to see how I was holding up. Afterwards, she explained what she did and checked out her work which I very much appreciated. Fantastic! I have to add that I brought my earbuds to listen to music which definitely helped drown out any high pitch drilling and just added to the calm feeling of the whole experience. I would recommend this place for anyone who might just need a cleaning or who might need to get some major work done. My wife went to Balcones as a new patient for a routine dental cleaning. At intake she stated she had severe pain in the back of her mouth. The associate DDS recommended a root canal because of an infection he noted on the x-Ray. Not only did Balcones forget to provide my wife with much needed antibiotics, but they gave her another customer's pain prescription. The following morning I brought my wife back to Balcones for an emergency appointment. Balcones administered a numbing shot and prescribed a steroid to manage the pain. Since my wife was still experiencing a significant amount of pain after the numbing shot, I asked about getting a referral to a specialist. Only after we ended up in the ER the next morning (Day 3 of unbearable suffering) to manage my wife's pain did we finally receive a referral from Balcones to see an endodontist. Balcones' root canal procedure, prescription mistakes, and delayed referral ultimately resulted in my wife suffering in agony for four days, emotional trauma, two trips to the emergency room, and eventual removal of her tooth by an oral surgeon. read more

Dr. Lindsay and Dr. Bailey are both awesome and great at what they do. The hygenists are all incredibly gentle but thorough and they offer lots of nice extras that nervous people like me need. I'll be honest--I haven't visited the dentist in years and was having a minor freak out about my appointment. I was so scared not only that the procedure would hurt, but that I might be made fun of or ridiculed or just made to feel kinda dumb for having waited so long to visit the dentist. I can so happily say that that is not the case at Balcones! The minute I walked in the door I was feeling comfortable. The front desk staff was kind and courteous (they even came to grab my paperwork from me as opposed to me bring it to them--talk about customer service!), and from that moment on it only got better. I was talked to so warmly and non-judgementally the entire time. All my questions were answered (most of the time without me even having to ask!) and I was comforted about my anxiety. Financially they offer such great options, and as someone who is always surprised by random bills in the mail from healthcare visits, it was truly AWESOME that they bring you a statement to the back showing you EXACTLY what your insurance is going to cover and what you will be walking out paying. I knew what was being done and how much it was going to cost me--no surprises like I said. They also accept Care Credit which was a big deal for me as I knew what I needed going in there would not be cheap! I can't truly tell anyone how much their hospitality and gentleness made my visit. It really stuck with me with Dr. Lindsay looked at me and said that they weren't there to judge me for the state of my teeth or how they got to be that way, they were just there to help me fix them. I had such a great experience and have been bragging about this office to everyone who will listen. I was so scared walking in there and they acknowledged that and helped me.
