We had such a fun time at Bakersfield on Mass Ave! Great tacos, strong drinks, fast service, and a lively atmosphere. I'd describe the vibe as an elevated dive bar meets taco and tequila joint--casual and energetic, but the food and cocktails are definitely a step above typical bar food. We ordered the mezcal pineapple margarita pitcher, which was absolutely worth it. A single margarita was around $12, while the pitcher was $45, so it was a great value if you're sharing. The drinks were strong and they definitely didn't hide the mezcal--you could actually taste that smoky flavor. The Tajín rim was perfect with the pineapple. For tacos, we tried the short rib and Baja shrimp. The short rib was a solid 4.5/5--tender, flavorful and, most importantly, not dry. But the Baja shrimp was a 5/5 for us. The shrimp had a great texture and crunch, and both tacos felt like a good value for what you get. We also ordered the chips & guacamole. They give you a very generous amount of chips, and the guac tasted fresh and was nice and chunky. Service was one of the highlights. Our server--I believe her name was Addie or Ada--was fantastic: attentive, friendly and FAST. Another server/host even surprised us with two shots each on the house, which was such a fun and unexpected touch. My partner mentioned that Bakersfield is usually pretty busy, but we lucked out and were seated immediately. The whole place had a fun, welcoming and gay-friendly atmosphere, which fit perfectly with Mass Ave. We loved walking around the neighborhood afterward and checking out some of the cute shops. It was also within walking distance of our hotel, which made the margarita pitcher an even better decision. Great tacos + strong mezcal margaritas + awesome service + fun Mass Ave location. After a couple days of conference food (BLECH), I snuck out for a Yelp recommendation at Bakersfield Mass Ave and proceeded to live my best life. I ordered chips and guac plus three different tacos, and this meal was exactly what I needed. The guac was plentiful, chunky, and super fresh, and I absolutely ate more of it than I should have. The chips were thick, hot, and fresh, which is basically all I ask for in a chip. The tacos were the real stars. My least favorite was the mushroom taco, mostly because it was a little too cheesy for me. But the crispy fish taco? INCREDIBLE. The flavors, sauces, and textures were all so good. I took my sister here yesterday to celebrate her birthday. I made reservations for us and requested a booth. From what I could see, there is very limited booth seating available in the bar area, and I was happy that our request was honored. Our server, Alyssa, was extremely helpful and patient throughout our visit. We decided to go with a classic margarita pitcher ($45) and the Dinner for Two ($49). The dinner for two is a lot of food! It consists of one dip, two bocaditos, and 6 tacos. Alyssa was sure to acknowledge the note that I'd entered into OpenTable when I made the reservation. I let them know that we were celebrating a birthday and for that my sister was given a free shot for her birthday. It is the shot of the day and yesterday's was El Jimador Blanco. I ordered one as well. We chose the Short Rib Queso as our dip. We asked Alyssa for details and recommendations throughout our meal and she was very knowledgeable. She had advised us that their queso was very smoky. We thoroughly enjoyed the short rib queso. The tortilla chips were crisp and thin, but not too thin. They were able to stand up to the dip. As we progressed through the meal, I noticed that every single thing came out within minutes of us ordering them. Service was extremely fast. While we were still enjoying our drinks and the dip, we ordered our Bocaditos. We got the Carnitas Taquitos and the Esquites. The taquitos were crisp and delicious. Three came in the order. The esquites is a cold corn salad. I missed that in the description and was expecting a warm dish. That was my bad. It was okay, but I was expecting a warm, creamy dish, so I was a little disappointed. This portion of our meal also came out very quickly, so at this point, our table was covered with a variety of different dishes. We hit pause on the ordering at this point, but Alyssa continued to check in on us without rushing us. We advised her that we'd like to hold off until our pitcher was at least half gone and she obliged. By the time we ordered our tacos, our bellies were full. We ordered and then later asked for those to be packaged to-go. My sister, who had ordered two carnitas and one short rib taco, later told me that hers were yummy. I ordered one fish taco (amazing!), one short rib taco (delicious) and one al pastor taco (would've been good, but there were too many pineapple pieces). We had a great time. It was an amazing and fun atmosphere. It was rainy that day, but I could see us hanging on the enclosed patio area on an overcast, but not rainy day. If I had known they were as small as they were I would have probably gotten 3 instead of 2. Bakersfield is one of my favorite Indy Restaurants. The food is always top tier. You can't go wrong with their delicious margaritas and chips and guacamole. The salsa trio is another good appetizer. I love their pollo rojo, al pastor, and carnitas tacos. I've never had a bad experience at Bakersfield, I've celebrated birthday's here too and the staff always helps make it a memorable celebration. I did not realize that not only does the restaurant have outdoor, front eating area but also an enclosed, yet open sky, back patio. It is connected to The Oakmont restaurant. The concrete was a little slippery at the benched table with an umbrella. The restroom stall door was rustic metal. I ordered a short rib taco and tried a fish taco without slaw and with sauce on the side and add pineapple pieces. The flavor and quantity of the short rib were much better than the fish taco so I ordered 2 more short rib tacos but without creme and with pineapple bits. We were down in the downstairs section since we had a large group, they were very helpful. Our waitress was fantastic. She was so helpful took care of all of us. We had two people show up very late and she got with them right away and got them taken care of so that they got caught up with the rest of us. Food was really good. we had chips and their salsa trio as well as queso. A number of people got empanadas they were crispy and totally stuffed. And then most of the rest of us got some tacos variety of chicken, shrimp, pork, and one vegetarian. Olive more great. They were small, but they had tons of meat and other spices and additions. Seating inside for our party was a large table with benches, we fit comfortably with lots of room to spread out. Music was a little loud for my taste. Drinks were great we got several Margs. No frozen margs, all on the rocks in a mason jar. Food options were good; we started with chips and salsa, guac and queso. All very good with generous EXCELLENT chips.
