    The new look!
    Alex R.

I love this store! I walked in this week and they were in the midst of a new cheese delivery! The store has a new look, which was explained to me as a remodel to bring in their storage so that they can adjust to their store & shipping needs since they're also online. They shared that they still do charcuterie boards, especially during the holidays and if I'm interested, I just need to let them know some time in advance. They just also brought back Rancho Gordo beans( so hard to get) and my favorite mustards and pickles! They let me know that even though the store looks different, they were able to fit everything that they originally had in the smaller space and that now it's much easier to manage for the staff and makes it an easier process to help customers as they walk in to shop. I'm going to keep coming back here to support the small small local, family owned business and its employees. Let's not knock this small business or any others when we can lift them and our community up.

This is a small store in Encinitas that has top class products; not cheap but this is a classic case where you get what you pay for. I go there, mainly, to buy my vinegars. Aged 12+ years, from Italy, if you want the best vinegars you have ever tasted this is the place. My favorites are the Pomegranate Balsamic Red Vinegar, their regular Balsamic Red Vinegar, the Fig Balsamic Vinegar and their French White Balsamic Vinegar. Tip: check in and you get 15% off! Try them out, they also provide free samples. You won't regret it!

    ooh, so-o-o-o-o many EVOO's !!!

without surrendering completely to hyperbole, there aren't enough stars in the sky to rate this place. at the counter there's a small selection of salumis (including a CHORIZO and two ABRUZZOs, one sweet and one spicy) and a couple PATES. sampled the FINOCCHIO which had a very interesting texture (mouth feel) and, in spite of its name, no strong fennel taste before deciding on the SOPRESSATA which is amazing. TOMATO CONFIT was luscious with a bright tomato flavor and no harsh acidity. can't get over how something so simple (and i don't particularly like tomatoes) could be that good. there were three or four kinds of OLIVES (we brought home two including some big, green brine-cured ones). they carry a great selection of cheeses (including several from SONOMA's COWGIRL CREAMERY and NOCAL's HUMBOLT FOG). we picked up a quarter pound each of MOLITERNO, a pecorino-style sheep's milk cheese with black truffles, EWEPHORIA, a sheep's milk gouda with a sweet, nutty butterscotch flavor, and ST. AGUR, a cow's milk double-cream cheese with a buttery texture and a delicate sharpness that's not too salty -- very approachable with a milder twang than most blues. after tasting an astounding variety of flavored vinegars and EVOOs, we settled on the TRADITIONAL BALSAMIC and HOJIBLANCA, a SPANISH varietal. did you know that OLIVE OILS have a one-year shelf life? yeah, me either. so, six months a year BAKER AND OLIVE stocks from the northern hemisphere and the other six from the southern. lots of great, organic, handmade breads. we started at the top of the list (a FRENCH BAGUETTE) and figured we can work our way down to the bottom on successive visits. now, here's the bad news. this place is as habit-forming as heroin only more expensive. one visit and i'm hooked.

Great service and don't forget to sign up to receive news and discounts as well as events

At first, it felt weird tasting all these olive oil and balsamic, but it turned out to be quite fun.

The one in Rancho (near Spring Valley) just closed. So sad about that. Thankfully, we still have this location. This is such a great spot. The market appeals to shoppers who value freshness, thoughtful sourcing and convenience. There is a huge selected range of fresh produce, including organic and seasonal fruits and vegetables. The meat and seafood department -- my favorite department -- is a standout, offering high-quality cuts of beef, chicken and pork, along with fresh and sushi-grade seafood. The deli and prepared foods section is phenomenal! And it's full service. They have Boar's Head meats and a wide assortment of cheeses, along with house-made salads, sandwiches and ready-to-eat meals. The market also offers a bakery selection with pastries and desserts, as well as artisan breads that pair well with the store's specialty items. My absolute favorite item in this section are the chips, which are fresh, thin, crispy and perfectly salted. I will stop in for the chips alone. Beyond the fresh departments, Harvest carries a thoughtful mix of pantry staples and other products. Shoppers can find specialty oils and vinegars, unique seasonings, sauces, olives and chocolates. The wine selection excellent as well. The overall shopping experience is clean, friendly and personal, and the staff are generally very helpful and knowledgeable. Prices tend to be higher than large grocery chains but, again, this is a specialty store often with much higher quality. One of my favorite grocery stores in San Diego.

Wayde (I hope thats spelled correctly) was so sweet when we walked in and gave us the run down and made some great suggestions. If you plan on sitting down to eat, I highly recommend getting there early because seating is limited but also its a great spot to grab and go to the beach! We got the DBL (as first timers) with the beef fat fries. The flavor profile and portions are SOOO worth it. Be wise and come to The Wise Ox

I get that smash burgers are all the rage these days, but if a burger patty spends as much time on the second side as it did on the first, it's not crustified; it's as tough and juiceless as jerky. an abundance of aging primals are on display at the WISE OX. when they're cut into steaks, the trimmings are ground for burgers. a not-particularly-wise cow died for our sins (so said the family's vegan son who begged off lunch). honor that and cook the meat properly. to not do so is beyond sacrilegious. if I told the meat cutter (aka the "butcher") I was going to use the dry-aged Rib Eyes or New Yorks he'd just carved up to make jerky, he'd be horrified. so, why isn't he raging at the guy on the grill doing that to our burgers? the BEEF FAT FRIES (aka Tallow Fried Fries) still have great flavor, but are still way, way, way too salty. check the photo, and count the visible salt crystals if your cardiologist's on speed dial.
