If you live in Winnipeg and haven't been here - you must be living under a huge rock. This place is a staple and will be around for a long time. Most people tend to head here for their amazing (and I mean amazing) selection of desserts. They are made fresh daily and if you can, come with as many people as possible. I say this because then each person can order something different and you can all share! I'm a genius and you're welcome. Unlike a lot of hot spots in Osborne - Baked Expectations is actually quite clean and looks updated and trendy. There are a lot of chairs and tables, but they are really close together so if you are heading here on a date try to get a corner side booth. The other food they make here is also really good. I would highly recommend coming in for breakfast or lunch. The servers are great and really fast. This is just one more reason people keep coming back! read more

Coming from San Diego, this place deserves one star. I heard rave reviews about the desserts here only to be sorely disappointed. Let's start with the service. The patrons next to us had been seated long before us and they didn't even have a menu! They complained that they had been waiting for ten minutes. As for my group, we had been waiting for five minutes. Our waitress (when she finally arrived) had to come back three times to repeat our orders because she didn't even write it down. It took FOOOOREEEEVEEERRRR until we finally got our orders. The atmosphere was like being in a sardines can; jam packed full of noisy people. If you like that kind of environment, then this place is the place for you. I felt like I was in a bar! I couldn't hear the person that was sitting two feet away from me and that REALLY annoyed me. The food, surprisingly, tasted delicious. But it doesn't get any points for that because for a tiny portion of spaghetti and meatballs, cost an arm and a leg; $13 for a small plate! That doesn't even include the tax. The food here appears to be comfort food. I have no idea why this place is packed because the gist of this review is that the service sucked, prices are over-the-top, too crowded, noisy and I honestly don't think the wait time was worth the food. Baked expectations is home cooking and home baking at its finest. I can't speak much for the food menu items, all I've ever come here for are the desserts. The dining area is one big open space. To one side is a display area of the cakes and pies to choose from. The rest of the space is a round dining area, plenty of room to bring a few friends. The space is causal enough to come in shorts and T-shirt if you wanted. I've been here a few times (3) so far in the last month. Each time I have been greatly impressed with the cake I selected. The red velvet cake is nice and heavy with an amazing icing. The banana cake was excellent and had a nice texture without falling apart. The last one I had was the chocolate cake. Layers of chocolate with some banana slices in for good measure. If your sweet tooth is calling then this is the place you should be at. They also do take-out in a nice branded box. I had the most amazing cheesecake I've ever tried here. It kicked the ass of the cheesecake in Vancouver at Trees Organic Cafe where it's voted best in the city. I just went with the Strawberry, and holy freaking crap. HOW IS THE CRUST SO GOOD? The filling was great too! Perfect, actually. The strawberries were nice and sweet with a drizzle. I also tried a big bite of the Pumpkin cheesecake. It was delicious, like an ultra creamy pumpkin pie with the perfect amount of spice and topped with pumpkin seeds. The only downside for me was the price. A little much just for a slice of cheesecake... but it was so good I'd keep paying for it anyways. read more

Great place for dessert or food! I've mostly had the dessert here and I've never been disappointed with one of their cakes! I'm not even sure what kind of cake I got this time, but I can honestly say It was awesome! Had fresh fruit which is always my favourite, a hit of lemon which actually went very well and wasn't overwhelming at all, then the toffee adds an extra sweetness that is just so satisfying. I've had other pieces of cake here, but this one just seemed to be the most interesting one I've tried so far. The food here is pretty good too. I've gotten sandwiches and wraps with a side of fries, and remember the fries being pretty good! It's a very fun and modern vibe inside. Staff is always friendly and are helpful for cake suggestions. We went here based on a local's recommendation and it was alright. It reminded me a lot of Johnny Rocket. The place had a retro theme going on for them which as nice. They also had a great display of desserts, ranging from cakes to pies. All good things if you were looking for it. We had the classic burger with cheese and it was nothing out of the ordinary. I concur with the previous review...practically took the words right out my mouth! Delicious fresh baked from scratch daily cakes and pies, healthy portions and good service when the focus is on. Well informed staff (they can tell you about every slice in the case) and outside of the desert the food isn't too bad, just make sure they roll it out immediately so it doesnt get cold...soemtiems theyll hold onto the the first plate so they can make one trip with 3 and the 1st one is all cooled off -_-... When plans fall through, what do you do? Have a dessert and wine night at home. We picked up a few bottles of wine and then headed over to Baked to pick up some cake. The selection that night was pretty good, though there were a few items missing from their display. Still, there was more than enough options that appealed to me. We decided on the Old Fashioned Chocolate Cake, Crazy Chocolate Cake, Tia Maria Torte and Deadly Chocolate Mousse. Probably more than two people really needed but if you're going to indulge, you might as well really indulge. Counter service was about average - not slow but they seemed a little disorganized, and four slices of cake came out to about $30, which seems pretty standard. The portions were quite large (at $7 per slice I would expect them to be). All four cakes were great - the textures & flavours were all lovely and all that chocolate went great with the red wine we had. (Yes, we finished all four slices that night, with a wee bit of help from a third person.) For take out, Baked worked out perfectly. read more

At this point it feels like Baked grew an ego because they became a popular local cake place. The prices are on the higher end but the cake is definitely good. However the staff are very rude and unorganized. I called on a Thursday to pre order Cake slices and was told that they only do cake slice pre orders same day and to call back tomorrow right when they open at 12. So I wait and call the next day a Friday and am told because it is the weekend they don't do slice pre orders and have to either come in or go through door dash. I was told this by an extremely rude manager who gave short one word answers on the phone. I enjoy baked's cakes but at this point they are taking advantage of the fact that they are popular and are making customers jump through hoops. They are located in Osborne with pretty much no parking which is often why people pre order. On top of that they aren't doing dine in at the moment so I am not sure why they cannot take pre orders and need to 'save their cakes'. All in all I will only go to baked for special occasions now and even they I will definitely consider other places before them. I've been to this place a few times and I'm always satisfied with the desserts. (Went there for food once and it was okay, too, but the desserts are why people go there.) The only problem I have with Baked Expectations is when it gets busy, the entrance gets jammed up with people because people are paying at the till and then there are also people waiting to be seated and then you have people who are just grabbing stuff to go, so they also have to pay at the till. They really should start doing pay at the table service so their entrance doesn't get so crowded during busy times. read more

First, some explanation. I've been a regular customer of Baked Expectations for going on three years now, since I moved into the area. Since then, I've purchased a piece of cake from them from between once a month to once a week, regularly. While the service has never been outstanding, the deliciousness of their food makes it worthwhile. I don't think anyone can claim that they don't make great cheesecake! But my experience with them tonight has soured me on Baked Expectations for good. After purchasing a piece of Red Velvet cake to go, I got home and saw that the piece I'd been given was tiny. A sliver. Out of curiosity, I weighed the slice, it was 200g (I had previously weighed a piece of their cake, for diet reasons, and it had come up more than 350g). Confused and upset, I returned to the store and spoke to the manager, who we had dealt with in the first place. She remembered me and took the cake behind the counter, and put it on a plate (I think to look at its size next to the other pieces sitting there). On a plate, it was even more obvious that this piece was insufficient, but amazingly, she looked at me and we had the following conversation (paraphrased): Manager: Yup, this is the right size. Me: What do you mean? It's smaller than all the other ones on the counter. And besides, I've come here every week for a long time and I've never seen a piece that small! Manager: Well you must have just got lucky I guess, this is the size we sell it for. Me: For $9? I've never got a piece this small. Manager: You must have just been lucky in the past, I'm sorry but there's nothing i can do for you. I can give you a difference cake if you want, but it's going to be the same size. The fact is, I've worked in food service and retail before - she could have taken care of me if she'd wanted to. The customer service at this restaurant has always been sub-par, but this was a new, disgusting low. Shame on them for how they treat their regular customers. I will not be returning. read more

I'm in Winnipeg for a couple of days to visit my mom and decided to take her to Baked Expectations, a Winnipeg institution from back in the day when I lived here, for dessert. The food was ok, she had an apple cheesecake which she seemed to enjoy while and my pavlova had a rather gummy meringue, it was quite tasty. The drink selection was poor. The only mixed drinks were ones made with liqueur. And the prices were atrocious. $29. for two desserts, one drink and a cup of tea. My biggest issue was with paying. The sign on the door said no credit cards, only debit, but when I offered mine up, they informed me they would not take American debit cards. Fair enough. I pulled out cash. They then stated that the American dollar was only taken at par. Excuse me!!! The exchange rate is 81 cents on the dollar. So effectively, I would be paying almost $36. for the already overpriced snack. When I questioned it, they said they could refuse my money all together. Great customer service, guys. You can bet I won't be back here anytime soon. And my first stop after was to an ATM to score some Canadian cash. You can bet that if the exchange rate was the other direction, they would be factoring it in. read more

Disappointed that their Tia Maria torte is made with half real whipped cream and half cool whip. They claim it's because real whipped cream is not firm enough the cake would topple however, real whip cream can be whipped so it's firm like cool whip( I mean it can turn into butter???) so I feel this is just a way to cut costs. I decided to treat my son and his girlfriend to lunch at Baked Expectations and once again, this place did not disappoint me. A wee bit pricey but you get what you pay for. A popular place for deserts in and around the area. The place itself feels old and needs some updating. It has a prime location but it is far from being a great place to visit. There is a wide selection of deserts and food. Obviously the deserts are recommended. The idea is to go find a table, pick a desert at the counter for it to be served to you. Most of the deserts are good. The service is iffy though. I'd rather pick a place which is smaller and feels a bit cozier...especially if its for desert. read more

Server came back to say they were out of the dessert I ordered but forgot who ordered what and asked my friend instead of me. When my friend corrected the server and pointed to me, our server said "No, you ordered this". We know what we ordered. The second time she came back to say that they were also out of the second dessert we ordered, so I cancelled my dessert and just took coffee. I got one cup of coffee and didn't see our server for the rest of the night. When we were leaving I asked if a manager was around and a woman behind the counter said "Yes I am but I'm too busy". Cakes look much better than they taste. But what left a bitter taste was the poor customer service. Ordered 3 slices to go with my 2 friends and just before leaving I decided to use a knife and fork to just cut my slice in half to give it to my friend. I also took a small bite just to give it a little try with no intention to sit down and eat the rest there . Well the two staff that were on this Wednesday afternoon were So unfriendly and cold and one of them said I can't eat the cake inside if its for takeout. I literally was dumbfounded at this asinine "store policy". I said i took one bite and want to put the rest in my friends cake box. She said its fine this time but thats their policy. Wow! So be forewarned.....They shame you incase you might change your mind and want to stay and eat it there. And that wasn't even my case. This used to be my hangout place for Friday nights, as sort of an end of night excursion. It's great that they're open so late I think that's perfect for people who want to go do something and then need a decent place to go for food or dessert after (someplace that isn't MacDonalds) The food is great, i love their burger and fries and you get so much! but their dessert is so expensive. I mean... 8-9$ for one piece of cake is extreme no matter how good it is and yet people (myself included) still pay when they're there, so I guess if you can... why not. I don't like that there's a customer minimum price because if I come with a table of people who are ordering eight dollar pieces of cake and I only get a $3.00 iced coffee I think that should be acceptable and really who is going to go to a place like this to not eat and or drink anything? Does it happen so much that they had to enforce a minimum? Since you seat yourself it can be hard to get the attention of the staff because half the time it's so busy they probably don't even notice a new table of people, or realise that they haven't greeted them yet. I'm not super uptight about it so it doesn't bother me since I'm there to relax and talk anyway I'm never in any sort of rush. Over all I would say it's good. Baked expectations is a double edged sword. While the food is very good (burgers, fries, sandwiches etc) and their desserts offensively delicious, they have some of the slowest and inconsistent service of anywhere in the city, even if they are not busy. Music is always too loud, making it's patrons have to essentially yell at each other to hear of the music and other diners. Expect to be trying to flag down your server for most of your visit because they rarely check to see if your meal is good or if you need anything til long after you are done. If you don't mind that kind of service and are in no rush when you arrive, you will enjoy the tasty eats and treats they have to offer nonetheless read more
