Dry, dry, dry. I don't like doing negative reviews but I keep trying to find a decent baguette and on my first visit they were out so I tried a few expensive rolls and they were dried out and not good. They said they make baguettes every night so i went back this morning. Got the last one but it was more the size of a sub roll and really dry and crumbly on the outside and just okay on the inside, not to mention it cost $5.50. When I have the chance to stop in at The Crusty Ban, it's for the crusty buns. I love the crusty buns but they seem to get smaller all the time. On Friday when I stopped in to pick up a dozen buns. The staff are lovely and the pastries and sandwiches are to die for. It's clear however the owners don't care about the staff or customer's safety. There are no protections for staff (I remember when they weren't even wearing masks right into August, so management never mandated that), no glass, barely enforced distancing. I can't believe dine in is still an option. There is one hand sanitizer dispenser by one of the cashiers, no others. And there is no enforced mask rule for customers in this cafe. It makes me worry for the young staff, who I know are not responsible. I fully expect management to improve their practices or lose more business. read more

Still one of the best bakeries in the city. The turkey sandwich at $4.99 served on pumpkin seed bun sounds a bit pricey but is worth every penny - the bread really makes it. All the pastries especially their doughnuts and turnovers are great without being overly sweet. I think their croissant tastes better now. Nothing is disappointing here! read more

Oh my gosh! What an incredible gem! My friend had recommended this place and boy was I in for a treat. The bread is truly the most delicious that I've ever had. I tried the seed bun with butter and homemade jam. One would think, meh? But the bread was a perfect little round with sprinkles of flax seed, pumpkin seed and a smattering of other seeds..crunchy crust and soft on the inside. The homemade jam was I think raspberry and I devoured it all. I then came back the next day with boyfriend in tow for lunch. Chicken and barley soup, tomato veggie soup, crusty buns - a simple oval golden bun that is insanely delicious (fluffy on the inside and a thin golden crust on the outside), and oma's apple bread - fresh apples baked with a streusel topping. Short version: This is probably one of the best bakeries in Winnipeg, hands down. If you are nearby stop in and grab something - you won't regret it. Longer version: I passed this bakery every day on the way to work and finally decided to stop in one morning. Behind the counter there is a wall of breads of so many varieties. They are all fresh and every one I've had thus far has been delicious. In the display counter there are rows and rows of delicious baked treats - everything from croissants (the best croissant I have ever tasted by far) to danishes, and an ever rotating variety of things. In large baskets they have several types of buns and pretzels, all made fresh. The pumpkin seed bun is incredible, and I get at least 6 every time I stop in. I have also had the ham and cheese baked pretzel - and it too was incredible. I'm working my way through the bread rack, trying every type they offer and I haven't been let down yet. read more

I'm lukewarm on this place. The counter is run with a decided falseness. I have to admit I didn't feel very welcome. Even though there were only three customers in the store, the ladies appeared to be in a rush to get us out. Even the manager was terse with those in line. Crusty Bun is an European bakery located 5 mins from the St Vital Mall. They have a wide selection of pastries. I absolutely love that there is a seating area in the bakery so customers can have their order fresh there! Below are a few items I've had and my thoughts to them: - Bee-sting Cake: This is a German dessert that is made of a sweet yeast dough topped with caramelized almonds. It is filled with a vanilla custard and buttercream. It was good but it was too sweet IMO. - Ham & Cheese Pretzel: Excellent! This is my favourite pretzel ever!!!! Make sure you get there early if you plan to get one because they are sold out quick! Highly recommended! - Chocolate Croissant: Really good! This is my significant other's go-to order! Highly recommended! - Danube Waves: This is a German vanilla cake that is topped with chocolate cake, cherries, butter cream and chocolate ganache. The one that I had from Crusty Bun had too much buttercream....if they had cut down the buttercream, it would have been perfect. - Witch Pretzel: this caramel twisted pretzel is topped with sugar glaze. I probably wouldn't get this again. It was way too sweet IMO. In summary, if you have never been to The Crusty Bun, I would highly recommend it! It is definitely worth the try! Just keep in mind that the dessert pastries are generally pretty sweet but they do a great job with all their other pastries. read more

I've been here a few times already, and everything I've purchased so far has been delicious! Off the top of my head, I would recommend a pumpkin seeded bun sandwich with either turkey or ham. Their cream puffs are a delicious (messy) desert! Plenty of other sweet snacks as well. Prices are a bit high, but not too much. I'd say the cost is on point for the value that you're getting. read more

I am giving one star because of an incident happened with me that shows poor customer service! I bought a ready packaged sliced farmer's bread, and sat down at the place for coffee, as I looked into my bread. Noticed its crustier than how I usually buy it, ( I buy it frequently), so I went politely to the young man I bought it from and asked for another pre-packed from the shelf that felt and looked like a softer crust. He first went and checked and told me that mine is softer, I pointed to one and asked him to exchanged it with as the crust looked a bit less brownish than the one I have, he was confused and I think angry and went to the baker's inside and came saying that they can't exchange any bread that left the counter( mind you I haven't left the store as I was sitting with a friend, the package is tightly wraped as I bought it) I took it back and sat but felt that this was a bit over, I thought may be because another hand touched the package from outside so may be for safety reasons, but then I thought that lots of people and customers handle pre-packed bread everyday in bigger backers or supermarkets, i went back and returned and told them that I am not taking it and I don't need the money, I was really upset and felt that this was a poor excuse not to exchange it, I sat again with my friend to finish the coffee, nobody came to explain, to even apologize that this is beyond them and it's the policy of the place as sometimes people do or offer at least that I would take something else.
