Chicken kofta charcoal grill with Arabic rice and salad
    Rach M.

Bakchich is one of my go to places on Bold street. It has fragrant Lebanese dishes, a lot of meat choices (halal) and it is incredibly cheap! It has an arabesque interior with Arabic writing swirling all over the walls. I normally go for the baba ganoush and hummus as sharer plates. This time I had the chicken kofta charcoal grill with Arabic rice. The portions are generous and I struggled to finish my plate! The chicken was succulent and spicy and the Arabic rice tastes authentic. The waitresses were perfectly friendly, if not a little forgetful with our drinks. However, they did prioritise my friend's meal and wrapped it up for him to go as he had a train to run for. This is one of my favourite restaurants, and I think this one on Bold street had the edge on the Manchester chain.

I have had better Lebanese food, the flavor just isn't there and this is based on their Lamb Shawarma and Kabsa dish. It is very bland, and the garlic sauce has no garlic taste to it. Although service was impeccable, I just do not think this place has good flavor Lebanese food.

    The beautiful tiles (Entrance)

Location: Bold Street - a hip road! The entrance has beautiful tiles - modern middle eastern style with cute mosaic. Lovely, stylish venue with an awesome painted wall with arabic calligraphy. I came here because I loved the ambiance inside - it was full but everyone was so happy and relaxed. Food: I ordered lamb shawarma and panache drink (mixed fresh fruit smoothie) which was uber delicious! The shawarma was divine, mouth watering and well seasoned. They accept only CASH but there is a cash machine not far from the venue. I will definitely come back (impressed by the staff because they were super friendly and very attentive at busy lunch time).

The food is delicious and cheap, with large rich ingredients and it also serves speciality coffee. I have tastes a few dishes there unlike anything Ive tasted before and I eat out A LOT !! An added bonus is that they do corkage so we were able to bring wine and champagne that had been bought for me. The interior is a mix between intimate and modern with an exotic influence and also boasts a Shisha bar upstairs with a balcony. They also do takeaways , so if you ever need high quality food and not a greasy pizza, I recommend ordering. I will eat there again and again.

I was in the mood for Mediterranean and there it was across from Costa Coffee, offering the FLAVOURS OF LEBANON. The ambiance was laid back and reminiscent of an Arabian outdoor garden, including climbing vines and flowers, hanging lights and intricate tile designs, all whilst Arabic music played in the background. The lamb kofta was deliciously seasoned & the vegetarian mezze very nice as well. I would have given 5 stars if the wait from the kitchen wasn't so long. We had a choice of places to eat here with Yo Sushi nearby, but it has become way too overpriced for what it is, and Tampopo which was also nearby, but we remembered that the last time we ate there the portions were just mean and the food wasn't hot. So in here it was. It's an open kitchen but I suspect most of the dips are factory made off site and plated here. We ordered a mezze platter for one and a mixed grill main consisting of chicken & lamb which came (served fairly cold) with a salad and a choice of spicy potato (the waitress declared the potatoes weren't that spicy) rice or cous cous. Cous cous was instantly our choice and it was very good. The food was refreshingly delicious with fresh herbs lifting the taste buds to another level. The salad with the mixed grill was ace tasting. The mezze plate was entirely vegetarian with some vegan food on the plate. The portions were mostly generous, but only one small falafel; should be two. Whilst it was all delicious the smoked aubergine and the baba ghanuj were really stand - out stunning and the flat bread on the side was a wonderful vehicle to dunk and munch. The service was friendly, but on the slow side and we got the wrong bill at the end of our meal. It was also odd to hear that only credit card payments were accepted and one couldn't put a tip onto the card payment either. We were fine with card payment and if we can't tip than that's that but it would be good manners if not necessary to tell guests this before they are seated or put a note on the window. Solid three stars - if the hot food was hot and the service focussed it would be four stars but if I'm not getting tips I wouldn't be super efficient either and to management - it's not rocket science guys & gals.

Price range is 6-12 pounds, and dishes are enormous, so it is impossible to leave the place hungry. What I didn't like was the service - our party of 12 people received a one (!) jug of water and 7 glasses. The servers were nice yes, but the food was far from what I expected. I had the lamb shawarma, and while yes I realize it was only £3.50, any hole in the wall on the curry mile would have a better and bigger shawarma for the same price. It was very thin resembling more of a wrap with scant filling. I did eat the whole thing so it wasn't bad, but then I looked down and saw my little basket/plate. It was filled with oil. I tilted the basket in different directions playing with the puddle of oil running from side to side at the bottom of the basket (I posted a video of this). Then I saw my hands covered in oil and was immediately terrified knowing that I was going to wake up with puberty like acne on my face as a result of eating this shawarma. The garlic sauce was ok but then the hot sauce was definitely not spicy (less than Frank's red hot or tapatio). As someone who swears by her hot sauce, not having adequate hot sauce lost major points. Although the ambiance is nice and the servers are friendly, I am disappointed bc this place promotes itself as a trendy and lovingly crafted restaurant with authentic tastes of Lebanon, but with the copious amounts of oil, if I wanted greasy take away quality, I would choose the hole in the wall on the curry mile any day.

Basically this place does amazing Middle Eastern/Lebanese cuisine and on this occasion with it being Friday lunch time, I popped in just as they were doing their all you can eat buffet. For £11.95 I tucked into some amazing kofta, breads, dips, salad, wings - wow, so much great food just check out my snaps - plus there was lovely cake and pudding included to follow. The food was wonderful and tasty - really nice! To round off I bought an Arabic cardamom tea which was fantastic - really nice and complimented the meal well. Nope its not a randomly named curry house, Beirut serves food deliciouso Lebanese-o! For those not in the know, Manchester's curry mile has seen a mini Middle eastern revolution of its own. The Mile of curry is now equipped with a plethora of Shisha bars as well as restaurants such as Beirut. In honestly of alls, my first impression of the place was not great. The capital could be described as chaotic from the kids running around whilst parents going to town on their meat feasts to the directionless type waiting staff, more laid back than the kobedas on show. First impressions however don't last and I'm here to announce that the food thankfully did make a lasting impression. I'd personally recommend the mixed grill, even if I struggled to get through half of it. Don't be put off by the cover, its the contents of the book that count. If Beirut was a book, I would highly recommend it, it was a great read.

As a vegetarian, kebab shops obviously tend to push me to the edges of their menu. But I had decided that I was going to tough it out whatever, even if that meant a meal of fresh naan and salad. With no falafel on the menu, no real cold mezze, and the advertised hummus unavailable, things were not looking good. However, surprisingly, I ended up enjoying my best meal out in a while for the sum of....£2.50! Here is what can happen in place like this - due to kebabs being the main attraction, salad (albeit basic) is complimentary and stewed vegetable 'sauces' to moisten the meat are also priced very cheaply. So my meal was two naan, a lush vegetable stew of mainly aubergine and tomato plus the complimentary salad. The naan was just OK, but still a fresh bread. But the vegetable stew with just a hint of heat - I can hardly think of anything more soothing to digest! A man definitely needs some meals like this to stay in balance. I will definitely be back - I will probably have the same thing on rice next time. Or perhaps there are other vegetarian options ready to serve from the small bain marie, we shall see. The Turkish (or whatever) guys running this place are fairly friendly, and there is a nice balance between a majority Middle Eastern male clientele, but the construction workers, a townie couple, some Chinese guys and myself blended in OK. Food is mainly kebabs, biryanis and I'm not sure what additional takeaway sundries. One final observation - this part of London Road boast six or so businesses that seem strongly Middle Eastern - this place, the adjacent 'Roman' restaurant, Marmaris grocery store across the road, a barber, a dessert café. Watch out for my upcoming reviews of these places.
