A table full of food
Jessica D.

I had read about this place a lot and had wanted to try it so when my friend and I couldn't decide on where to eat one Friday night we decided to try it. Located down in an underground lair and decorated like my grandma's house, the restaurant was practically empty. The staff were friendly although not particularly efficient (the father/son owners spent a lot of time reading the newspaper or eating their dinner while a poor girl ran around doing everything.) My friend and I ordered the vegetarian mezzeh and a goulash to share and we were overwhelmed by the amount of food we were served. All of it was very tasty - amazingly tender lamb in the goulash and wonderful hummous, cheese and aubergine dip on the mezzeh. It was a feast and a half and we were both completely stuffed by the end of it. The big downfall was finding a large piece of plastic in the tabbouleh but they replaced this and gave us extra bread. Not that we needed it. We shared a carafe of house white which was fairly average but cheap and we were given cherry flavoured digestives at the end of our meal. Overall it was an enjoyable evening and well priced for the amount of food we were given.

Meat platter to share - Starteroos

"Excuse me, do you know someone called Barouyr Der Haroutounian?" I wasn't even ashamed to ask the question and the answer was irrelevant. (It was a private joke and I was already texting two of my childhood friends, who both instant replied with glee and customary LOLs) It'd taken me 20 years to venture into this place having first heard about it from a school friend with the aforementioned name. So discreet is the entrance to this place you'd be forgiven for walking straight past it as I nearly did. Having planned to attend the Making Waves event at Trof (https://www.facebook.com/making.waves.mcr) this event was a welcoming addition to proceedings. Despite arriving late (something that never happens!) I discovered to my delight that the sharing platter starters hadn't yet arrived. Score! The manager, attentively spotting me as the newcomer promptly handed me the menu as everyone had already ordered their mains. What would you like to order? A menu book that has a menu for a start please was my retort as I handed back an empty book. A comedy value start to the evening and we were off. Before we get to the food it's important to mention that despite the 3 stars, the decor would get 5 stars from me. Entering the basement one is instantly transported into a time warp. We discovered that the decor hasn't been changed in over 25 years. Yep, I'd say! Film makers take note if you want to shoot a scene for a film set in the 60's. Having said that, it does have an indelible charm to it. (If the magna carta-esque paintings on the walls are your cup of tea) The sharing platter was plentiful and the Madznov kebab was delicious, however my first ever Aremenian foodie experience left me feeling a smidgen underwhelmed. Aside from the obvious difference in terms of dish names, it felt very much like overpriced Arabic food. The kebabs were marinated well but lacked the depth in texture that you get from the Persian/Afghan/Lebanese/Indian variety. It was like tasting a Kobeda's distant cousin. It looks the same but isn't. A stunt double if you will. Ironically the best part of the main was the salad that came with it. The zesty seasoning was sensational and that's no exaggeration. I duly went about the task of blanketing the meaty Kobeda wannabe with copious amounts of it. Granted after which, it did taste rather good. Although the main was served on pitta bread with a side of boiled rice, the sharing platter came with what can only be described as another distant shy cousin of my trusted old friend, the naan bread. I can almost hear foodies (used to dining in places like East z East) saying something along the lines of "THAT's not a naan bread, THIS is a naan bread" *Crocodile dundee voice* I guess once you've tasted the tandoori naan breads of the East there's no going back. The sharing platter also played host to an array of different sauces and mezzes all of which I'm sure had various cool names. But in reality nothing stood out worthy of an honourable mention beyond what I've already tried at places like Petra and Beirut. In conclusion if you're looking for somewhere with a vibe that's the polar opposite of your run of the mill Post-modernistic city centre restaurant, give this a whirl. In fact, if Middle-Eastern food is something you haven't had the pleasure of delving into, you may even love it, and that's ok. The staff are attentive and friendly and it's certainly one to tick off on your foodie world adventures. If however, like me you've tried off the radar cuisines like Afghan et al, it'll probably be a bit bland for your taste buds. Which is not to say you can't check it out for it's decor and homely atmosphere. Areminain Taverna may have only got 3 stars from me, but gets a huge thumbs up for it's uniqueness and warmth.

A veggie dish for a change ...

I was meant to come here last Valentine's day...but didn't happen :( so I was glad I had the opportunity to come here last night. Walking through the disappointing Xmas markets I was a bit nippy and hungry...when I saw the sign for this place so l thought why not? Going downstairs led to a beautifully warm environment, the walls are painted in a beautiful warm red with Armenian motif..the waiter led us to a table adorned with candle light .. The waitress was really approachable and friendly...who informed us the card machine was not working, luckily I had cash on me for a change. For a starter we ordered these things that resembled a samiosa ...but when I cut into it it tasted fresh and balance of cheese and spinach was good. For my main I ordered this veggie dish for a change...it was a type of dolmas filled with chick peas and kidney beans which were beautifully seasoned and the whole dish was full of flavour..It doesn't look as great in the photo as it tasted. My colleague ordered the lamb kebab which liked really good too despite its meatiness.. The whole meal came to an end with segments of orange..I admit the portions were just so,and I could have easily polished off a dessert. Overall, a lovely cosey place that had food filled with flavour down to the last lettuce leaf..they offer Russian and Ukraine beer here too at £4.50 a pop but it's good. Customer service was fantastic, and portions were just enough without feeling over stuffed...I will come back :)

Armenian Taverna is one of those tiny little treasure troves of a restaurant that is barely visible from the street. You really have to be told about this place otherwise you could quite easily pass it by. Being a neighbouring country to Turkey and Iran, expect a lot of the cuisine to mimic Eastern European dishes such as Baba Ganouge and Ful (with slight differences to the spelling and presentation). The Mezze is great but there's also national favourites such as Armenian Goulash or King Prawns which I highly recommend. I also tried the Cous Cous Bidawi, a taverna specialty using seasonal vegetables and their special Kosko grains. The decor too is rustic and intimate and has changed little over the years, adding to the overall authenticity of the experience. The dishes are large here so beware, you might not save room for their wonderful Paklava desserts, but you can always buy a few to take away with you!

I have walked passed this restaurant many times without realising it was here. Its a small entrance between a clothes shop and a bank and not that were advertised/sign posted. The restaurant is downstairs and much bigger than I expected. We were showed our table, which was kind of towards the back of the restaurant and near the toilets. There were loads of other tables we could have sat and it wasn't as if they got lots of other customers booking in while we were there. Anyway.... I had never had Armenian food before but after reading the menu and reviews, I got an idea of what it would be. Nothing was massively different or unusual. For starter, we all shared a ordered a couple sharing platters - a vegetarian one and a meat one. They looked very similar to one another really and this was confirmed after looking at the menu. Overall, it was pretty good. We also got something called a Kagambov dolma. (Cabbage leaves filled with minced beef meat, rice, onion and herbs, delicately spiced). I really liked this and would recommend it. For main, I had the Chef's Mixed Khorovac (charcoal grilled lamb chops, chicken, pork, Lulu(minced lamb) served with rice and vegetables) - basically grilled meats with some veg and rice. It tasted nice - nothing amazing but still good. None of the meats was dry and overall tasty. For about £14, I think it maybe a bit on the expensive side for what it is, The choice of beer was a bit limited. It was Efes or Peroni. They have a Ukrrainian beer but it was out of stock. Would have been nice to try but not their fault. The service was a bit patchy - possibly down to the reason we were kind of on the other end of the restaurant when they waiters were at other side. One of us had to go up and actually get there attention and take our order.

Super! Loved the cheese khachapuri --so cheesy!-- and the rolled aubergine starters. The mushroom blini was rich and creamy. Service was friendly and attentive. Highly recommended!

What a fabulous little gem this is, we have come to celebrate a birthday on recommendation from family. So pleased we made the effort. Food is stunningly tasty and the staff are welcoming and super helpful. We will definitely be returning. Thank you for a fabulous evening.

Pleasantly surprised with how good the food is. The place is secluded in between Virgin Money and a clothing store making this a hidden gem. The food is on the pricey side but it is well worth it of you've got a gourmet soviet card.

Basically this place does amazing Middle Eastern/Lebanese cuisine and on this occasion with it being Friday lunch time, I popped in just as they were doing their all you can eat buffet. For £11.95 I tucked into some amazing kofta, breads, dips, salad, wings - wow, so much great food just check out my snaps - plus there was lovely cake and pudding included to follow. The food was wonderful and tasty - really nice! To round off I bought an Arabic cardamom tea which was fantastic - really nice and complimented the meal well. It was nice to go somewhere not on my normal radar, I'll be back!

Nope its not a randomly named curry house, Beirut serves food deliciouso Lebanese-o! For those not in the know, Manchester's curry mile has seen a mini Middle eastern revolution of its own. The Mile of curry is now equipped with a plethora of Shisha bars as well as restaurants such as Beirut. In honestly of alls, my first impression of the place was not great. The capital could be described as chaotic from the kids running around whilst parents going to town on their meat feasts to the directionless type waiting staff, more laid back than the kobedas on show. First impressions however don't last and I'm here to announce that the food thankfully did make a lasting impression. I'd personally recommend the mixed grill, even if I struggled to get through half of it. Don't be put off by the cover, its the contents of the book that count. If Beirut was a book, I would highly recommend it, it was a great read.

We arrived at the restaurant at just about noon when it opens. They saw us waiting outside though and let us in and gave us some karak tea! So warm and perfect. We thought that the only tables in the restaurant were downstairs at the entrance but it turns out there is a huge upstairs with carpeted rooms! There is a huge main room which seems to be for the men and then there are several smaller rooms in the family section. We decided to sit in one of the family rooms which is about the size for 2 people and maybe up to 4 if you squeeze in. As usual we started off the meal with some maraq lamb broth soup and salad. The salad dressing and sahawiq are in bottles which is so clever! It works really well to squirt the sahawiq over everything and it wasn't spicy here at all and tasted great with everything. I had also ordered some yogurt salad just in case to mediate any spiciness. For main dishes, we got lamb kebsa and chicken fahsa. I had originally ordered chicken ogda but the Yemeni guy said they couldn't make it in the black pots I think because there are too many bones. I don't like bones in the chicken ogda anyway and so he offered to make chicken fahsa which would fit in the black pot. It was my first time trying chicken fahsa and it was really good. They made it with a tomato base so it actually tasted like the chicken ogda that I like! So perfect. They also make malawah bread here which was awesome and made the meal complete. Another nice surprise is that they make fresh juice! We had fresh lime juice with the meal and it was really good. For dessert, we had some fatta masoob. It's very heavy and we were so full by the time we started to eat it but it was yummy. Hadramout is many times better than Queen of Sheba Restaurant in London and also 1/3 the price! We paid £22 for 2 people for this amazing and perfect lunch at Hadramout. For more information about Yemeni food, please visit here: http://yemenfood.blogspot.com/p/food.html

Hidden away on one of the side streets off wilmslow road, this understated, simple decor eatery was a gem of a find. Arabic food has always registered on my radar perhaps once a month, but this discovery may change all that. The menu is quite expansive and the pricing is extremely economically viable given the huge portions of food on offer. The roast lamb and chicken comes slow cooked with the rice and is nothing short of divine. One portion is easily big enough for two people and no one is gonna complain about food for the next few days it is THAT filling. There's also a host of sides that one can try, the lamb soup has a sharp taste that once engulfed by the palate has a delayed endorphin fuelled chemical reaction (in other words: its mint!) I have therefore declared thursdays as Hadramout day. It's a long menu and I intend to get through it next year! Canny wait.

Instead, have a look at the contents of the deli fridge - hummus, sauerkraut, salad, olives - the food on the tables and in preparation at the tandoor oven and grill behind the counter. As a vegetarian, I was still drawing a blank and so Beston (the owner) brought out first a yellow consommé and then a tomato & okra soup for me to try. For £6, I've found I can enjoy rice garnished with noodles, the tomato & okra soup which serves as a sauce for everything, salad mezze and one tandoor naan bread - it's a good meal! I also tried a cold yoghurt and lemon drink which was refreshing, if a bit sour for my tastebuds. There is a lot more choice here for the non-vegetarian - various soups and stews are ready to serve. The servers were nice yes, but the food was far from what I expected. I had the lamb shawarma, and while yes I realize it was only £3.50, any hole in the wall on the curry mile would have a better and bigger shawarma for the same price. It was very thin resembling more of a wrap with scant filling. I did eat the whole thing so it wasn't bad, but then I looked down and saw my little basket/plate. It was filled with oil. I tilted the basket in different directions playing with the puddle of oil running from side to side at the bottom of the basket (I posted a video of this). Then I saw my hands covered in oil and was immediately terrified knowing that I was going to wake up with puberty like acne on my face as a result of eating this shawarma. The garlic sauce was ok but then the hot sauce was definitely not spicy (less than Frank's red hot or tapatio). As someone who swears by her hot sauce, not having adequate hot sauce lost major points. Although the ambiance is nice and the servers are friendly, I am disappointed bc this place promotes itself as a trendy and lovingly crafted restaurant with authentic tastes of Lebanon, but with the copious amounts of oil, if I wanted greasy take away quality, I would choose the hole in the wall on the curry mile any day.

On these two points, this places Safad slightly behind Atlas Shawarma where the bread is fresh naan and also I always see the falafel being made to order at Atlas. Safad's trimmings such as hummus, tabbouleh and yoghurt mint sauce are above average, but still suffer from the unwritten law that kebabs shops must use only iceberg lettuce and pale tomatoes. But my overall verdict is that £3 is outstanding value for a substantial, freshly-made lunch. The décor is well-worn vinyl on the floor, formica tables etc. But for me is the integrity and warmth of the staff, plus the predominantly Arab clientele which give Sadaf a charm which beats many flashier places. They brought out a piece of chocolate fudge cake with candles and sang for my friends bday, a nice touch. We all tried a bite of cake and the fudge icing was delicious. I had a medium sweet coffee which was the only down side of this meal for me. The Greek delight it came with (a piece of pink sweet very like Turkish delight) was amazing but the coffee itself was very bitter and full of grainy residue.
