I came in for lunch after exploring nearby Deerfield Beach Island. Someone at my summer job mentioned this place to me for Mexican food and all of his recommendations were good so I have been meaning to get her ever since. There is outside seating but I opted for the AC inside. I loved the sign on the door letting me know that they value the ocean and will only give straws upon request. I see kids throwing away tons of plastic in the school cafeteria every day and it bothers me so I really appreciate their commitment to the environment. The restaurant is really cute on the inside with painted walls and Mexican art hanging. I loved the Frida Kahlo picture. As soon as I sat down I was given a mild and medium salsa and chips. The salsa wasn't my favorite. It was extremely watery and lacking in flavor and the chips were stale. For lunch I had a chicken chimichanga and that was amazing. It came out pipping hot, filled with a large amount of white meat chicken, and smothered in cheese. I didn't want beans so they kindly replaced them with extra rice. I also ordered a strawberry margarita. I didn't know they were two for one and so on their recommendation I had the mango margarita for my second one. That was a lot of margarita but at least it was Saturday afternoon. Two drinks and lunch was $20, you can't beat that. The staff here is so incredibly nice and friendly and the food is good and inexpensive. I loved my visit and will be back the next time I am in the area. read more

I have been to Baja many times. This last visit was disappointing. We went (2 people) in for cocktails and appetizers. The margarita was fair - mostly fruit mix with no taste of alcohol. We ordered the nachos and it was unappealing looking and quite small for the price. Taste was fair at best. When I got the bill there was a sharing charge added to the bill. Arrive Saturday night an hour before they closed and service was wonder and fast. Was set fast and food came quickly. They offer yummy free salsa and chips. The salsa was fresh and had a great taste. Got the armadillo eggs (jalapeño poppers) they were so good with the cranberry sauce , I would have never thought to pair them but it was good. This place is a super cool little dive in Deerfield with a neat atmosphere we enjoyed. It's not truly authentic Mexican food but the burritos we had were very enjoyable. We had excellent service and our salsa was heavily replenished (which is key!). This is a great place for taco Tuesday and we noticed this one day which fueled our interest in trying. The worse 'mexican food', i had ever tasted. I should say, it might as well call fusion Mexican food. If you want, actual Mexican food stay away from this place. Taco bell tasted more authentic than this place. Dont get fool with the number of cars outside the restaurant or the number of good reviews. Enchilada's red sauce tasted like pizza's marinara sauce. The whole enchilada tasted like calzone instead of enchilada. If you wanted to have a calzone, just order their enchilada. While the jalapeno sauce tasted like green-colored water, nothing tasted Mexican at all. Go somewhere else if you are looking for authentic or somewhat closer to Mexican food. It's been almost 4 years since the last time I ate at Baja Cafe. I don't think I'll wait even 4 weeks before I come back. From beginning to end, it was a great experience. Kudos to Savannah, my server. She told me she's been working there for 5 years as a hostess, and only recently became a server. She was both for me, and she was a complete pleasure. Service with a smile! She brought me the menu and asked me if I wanted a drink. Although I love good tequila, and they have a "wall of tequila", I asked for water with lime. Savannah returned quickly with the water (served with an ecological paper straw), a basket of warm chips, and 2 housemade salsas (mild and spicy, both delicious). After looking through their new menu, I decided on a few items and asked Savannah her recommendation. She told me the Mahi fajitas were her favorite. Both the rehipfried and black beans are vegetarian. She recommended the refried with the Mahi fajitas. First she brought me my sides of lettuce, tomato, cheese and guacamole (I asked for no for cream). The metal dish came out streaming and sizzling hot. It looked and smelled amazing. I made my fajita with a warm tortilla. The fish was tender, flavorful, and juicy, the peppers,tomatoes, and onions were perfectly cooked, not mushy but soft with texture. The seasoning was just right, no need to add anything else. When I was finished, Savannah asked me if I wanted dessert. I laughed and asked for a to go container because there was enough leftover for lunch the next day! BTW, if you do a Yelp check-in, you get a discount coupon! Baja Café is a very charming Mexican café! I really had a wonderful time there. It's a very simple restaurant. They do all of the basics admirably. The Salsas are great. So are the freshly made Tortilla Chips. The entrees are almost all covered with delectable cheese. I started my meal with an ice cold Coors Light along with the delightful salsas. You get two salsas. A very spicy, mostly corn, salsa and a mild, chopped tomato based salsa. Both are quite delicious and very different from each other. You could skip dinner, just drink beer and eat the fabulous, light, tortilla chips with the very unique pair of salsas. For my main course, I had the Steak Jaliisco. It was very tender strips of marinated beef steak rolled up in a soft tortilla with onions, chili peppers, spices and smothered with a fantastic cheese. On the side, it came with a hard shell tortilla cup filled with chili con carne and rice. Really fabulous! I put some of the great salsa on top of everything and had a ball eating this magnificent creation! My wife, Diane, had the Steak Tampiquena. It tasted like skirt steak and was equally delicious. I really had a terrific time enjoying this beautiful collection of Mexican tastes washed down with cold Coors Light. I'm coming back to Baja Café soon to enjoy more of this great food! read more

This is such a great find! We sat very quickly and we went around a strange time but it was still busy. It smelt so gooood inside. The decor was also cute and really captured but I think a Mexican restaurant is.I got a house margarita and I didn't know it was 2 for 1. I declined my second one and my waitress gave me a rain check for my other one. It was so nice and unprompted! Service was wonderful. The margarita was very good. It was strong which is always a plus. My tacos were amazing. They had so much flavor and were filled with chicken cheese and the best mango salsa. It was so delicious and I essentially licked the plate clean. Before you order, they give you chips and salsa, which is the best. The Mexican food at Baja Cafe was very good. As soon as we sat down a server brought tortilla chips and two kinds of salsas. One salsa was spicy, the other was mild. The salsas tasted fresh. Both salsas were good, but the spicy one was a little too hot for me. I enjoyed the mild salsa. When I go to a Mexican restaurant I must have a Margarita. I was going to get the house Margarita. The server suggested getting the Baja Gold Margarita which was only $1.00 more. It had pancho villa gold, orange curaçao, and Baja juice. It sounded good. I was disappointed with my Margarita. It came in a regular glass, not a Margarita glass. The taste was fair but not great. I asked the server if the bartender could sweeten the drink. He took the drink and returned a few minutes later. It tasted better. For my entree I ordered the steak Tampiquena which came with rice, black beans, avocado, and. a cheese enchilada. The steak was very good. It was tender. Everything was tasty. Service was very good. Our server went out of his way to be helpful. Baja Cafe is a cute Mexican style restaurant. You can sit inside or outside. Chili Relleno was prepared the way it should be with a thin breading and cheese in the middle. Pork Wings were fall off the bone tender and had great flavor. Extremely disappointed in this visit. Been there a few times and always enjoyed. Enough so that I talked it up and took an out of town guest there from the moment we walked in until the moment we left it was an unpleasant and unsavory visit. It started with two guys and a lady and a kid who seem like they were going to be remodeling the restaurant in the upcoming days. She was more attentive to the work that was to be done rather than the child. It was loud it was disrespectful. Then came the food which was completely inedible. So I passed by this restaurant a few times and I was thinking maybe I should try a new Mexican place. My usual order at any Mexican restaurant is Chicken Fajitas and instead of rice and beans I ask for a salad. So first off, they bring some really good chips and salsa (two kinds), one a traditional and the other a slightly sweet and spicy corn. Both delicious and fresh. My side salad was pretty big and I only was able to get through a little of it. The fajitas were generously portioned and full of lots of peppers and onions. Tasted really good and I really enjoyed my meal. The service was excellent and everyone was helpful. Definitely will come back again Update! Took my dad here for dinner and he loved it! Buried somewhere in that mess, there is a frozen patty that somehow tastes worse than grocery store fish sticks. Upon further inspection, one can see the terrible quality of the fish. I would give it a Zero, specifically for Cinco de Mayo. It was a seriously annoying Brazilian take-over with loud, obnoxious speakers that you could not even hear the person next to you along with drunken, rude patrons. Once upon a time there was this teeny tiny mexican hot spot in Boca in a retail strip mall and the popularity of this roughly 8 table establishment skyrocketed. So popular they would regularly offer patrons free coffee and dessert if you take it outside (standing area, no tables) so they can seat some of the many people always waiting to get their mexican fix. They finally moved to Lighthouse Point and go figure they outgrew that establishment too. And here we are today in Deerfield Beach. You know you're there the moment you drive in (a serious collage of color). Parking is a bitch here but worth the fight because the food rocks. I tend to try new things here normally but my friends/family are hooked on fajitas. To be honest I never order them because no one can finish an order; so I try something new and still manage to create a fajita masterpiece (or two). Food quality and quantity are both above par. Other favorite dishes worth trying: drunken burrito, satan's revenge burrito, pepe's spinach enchiladas with chicken, shrimp or steak asadas Great bar with huge selection of tequila of course. Frozen margaritas are the obvious choice here but choosing one can be a bitch (at least 10 on menu plus specials). My advice is don't splurge for any of the specials or anything other than the basic frozen margarita (it's fairly priced... just decide salt or no salt, regular or strawberry, frozen or on the rocks). Sangria is pretty good too. The prices are very fair already, but it's easy to find a deal here too. Wednesday is 2 for 1 margaritas and tequilas all night long. The very often give "free margarita" cards to use on you next visit (ask for it if you don't get one). Restaurant.com almost always has deals for Baja Cafe available. Groupon or Living Social have made offers not too long ago. So no excuse not to try it out... read more
