West was unavailable during our trip, but he made sure we were taken care of by referring us to Uncle Jose--and that worked out perfectly. After a quick and easy walk through customs, Uncle Jose met us right across the street and got the day started smoothly. He was friendly, knowledgeable, and made us feel comfortable right away. He guided us through a mix of local shops and restaurants, then gave us the flexibility to visit the spots we specifically wanted. We made our way to Puerto Nuevo for lobster, which absolutely lived up to the hype, and of course stopped at Restaurante Caesar's--the birthplace of the Caesar salad--which was a highlight of the trip. Uncle Jose took great care of us throughout the day and made the experience easy and enjoyable. If you are able to walk across the border and walk back or take a $10 shuttle back into the US, ask for Uncle Jose a warm and knowledgeable local that will take great care of you. I can easily give the highest recommendation for West and his company, Baja Border Tours. West knows how to navigate the border crossings, traffic jams, and any other glitches quickly and efficiently. He is known and welcomed by the locals, who can sometimes be seen high-fiving him. He chose terrific local venues, sights, and vendors for us, some of which only an insider might know about. Perhaps the best part of the trip was watching how West handled one of our tour-mates who was in a difficult state. When a tour-mate left their passport in Mexico, West was able to sail us through the border check into the US in spite of the missing passport and humongous lines. Let me just start by saying I've been on a lot of tours. City tours, food tours, hop off and on tours, etc. No tour will ever compare to this one. This is not just a tour. This is spending an entire day with a tour guide who is absolutely in love with Mexico. The amount of passion the tour guide has for for Mexico is unbelievable. This tour lasted about 12 hours but it was the most informative, fun, exciting tour I've ever been on. There was not a single moment where I was bored. I've traveled and taken many tours in my day. But West and this crew really are at the top of the list. Here's what I valued most: a) While there is an itinerary, he is not so rigid that you're always on the clock. Instead, he rallies the tour based on how fast people are making it back, enjoying the sights, etc. b) He has a real personality and discusses things like you're a friend. It's not a rehearsed script that is impersonal. While he does make sure to cover certain topics, he's really just story telling in regular language. He relates to people very well. c) He seems to know everyone in all the towns we visited. He should run for mayor. :) But seriously, he is very well liked and I think that speaks volumes. d) Most importantly, he's a genuinely nice person to everyone on the tour. My wife and I were celebrating our 9th anniversary, and I can tell you he made it VERY special to us. I don't want to say specifically what was done (because people might expect a specific thing)....what I can say is that it was totally unexpected, and it was really neat. best tour ever! We have been to Cabo twice and enjoyed it but this tour was real Mexico! There were seven of us including the tour guide West. He was outstanding, not only personable but knowledgeable! He took us to various villages where we got to meet the locals (very friendly bunch, no exceptions) and see how they lived. We got to see art and artists, walk the beach and of course, go into shops. Seeing the sights was worth the trip alone but West also took us to Mexican restaurants for great food. This tour really will exceed your expectations and is an excellent way to get around Baja Mexico with someone who has been going there for 18 years, knows everyone, and takes you to places you would never know existed if you went on your own. West is a nice guy and good driver, but if you are looking for a party experience, I would not recommend Baja Borders for your tour to Valle de Guadalupe. I realize now his 5 star yelps are for a different tour. My group was 13 people flew in from all parts of the country ready to party and day of we were told, "It's wine tasting, not get drunk". Day of (after being 15+ minutes late) we were told we could play our music, but he controlled the volume. I coordinated with West prior regarding having a ice chest with beers in the van for the 3 hr drive, it seemed fine until day off, he didn't have the cooler and wouldn't let us drink in the van. He said it was against the law especially in Mexico, which I find ironic because we know many people that have done other Valle tours that drank in the their bus. He spent over 30 minutes going over his waivers for the first pick up group, then another 30+ minutes going over the waivers again with the 2nd half of the group when he could have just started driving to the border and tell us to read and sign or at least condense to one explanation at the second pick up location. We did not get to the Valley until 6+ hrs later due to his delays, inefficiency in discussing his rules, and unexpected traffic! I just wish he checked the traffic on his maps and bypassed that route by going the other non coastal route. We did not get to the Valley for the first winery until 3 pm and we had dinner reservations at Fauna's at 5pm. Fortunately, we were able to move our reservations down to 7pm, which I am grateful for. I do appreciate that he felt bad we were not having fun in the end and he did spend a few more hours driving us around to make sure we could execute most of the plans. We didn't get to have any street tacos as mentioned in the tour fee, but I feel like he did compensate by driving us a little longer. What he also would do during the day would be to ask us for cash for the tips. He would then pay us back for the tips, but then tried to ask for them back in the final invoice. The hidden fees were strange and he said that nothing on his website said it includes tipping the wineries and restaurants. Why would we pay for his services for him to bother us for cash and move reservation times around? Unlike other tours, he hovered over us a lot and didn't let us do our own thing. He was always on HIS agenda rather than cater to us, the paying clients. At the end of the night, he was going to have us get out of his car and cross the border and meet him at Jack in the Box on the US side. This was around 2 am! Lastly, when the first group got dropped off, he couldn't find one of the wine bottles we bought. Everything was just so frustrating. Supposedly he has been doing this for a long time, but nothing was streamline and done with ease. West is a nice guy, but I would not recommend his services for Valle de Guadalupe tour. My friends had a completely different experience with a different tour company. read more

My husband and I vacationed for 2 weeks in La Jolla in July 2018. Prior to arriving there from Phoenix, I researched the myriad of border tours, as my husband and I love Mexico, its people, its food, its wine, its culture. My husband and I wanted to "experience" Mexico, especially the food and the local wineries. I could not find a tour that did both food and wine for a reasonable price. They all seemed...well, touristy, catering to the cruise-line crowd, with little to offer. THEN I found "Baja Border Tours!" The company had nothing but FIVE STAR reviews! So I picked up my phone and called. A man named West answered the phone and he spent 20 minutes answering all my questions. I was SOLD! We booked a tour for July 5, 2018. It was 7:40 a.m. when we met the bubbly, cheerful West (who owns the business and conducts all the tours) at a gas station close by where we were staying in La Jolla. He whisked us off to pick up four other couples who would be making the trek South of the Border with us. We were so looking forward to this trip. West is an amazing Colombian man, who will create an experience for you like no other. He absolutely LOVES what he does and his only goal is to make sure you are treated like a rock star. The trip started at the border where we checked in with authorities. Then across the border we went with the first stop in Tijuana at a wonderful, quaint, little Mexican restaurant that served us up street side with some of the biggest and most delicious Tamales we've ever had (and we live in Phoenix where Tamales are plentiful). We filled our bellies on these amazing gems. My husband and I were hungry, having had no breakfast--anticipating Mexican delicacies (as West promised when I first called him). We each had two tamales--one beef--one pork belly--and a few samples of corn Tamales, and even a bite or two of a strawberry tamale. Yes! A strawberry tamale! West gave us a short history on the border wall and how families from both sides connect with each other and even introduced us to a man who runs a shelter for refugees that desired to cross over to the U.S. A great experience. Soon we were off to the next stop...driving further south into Mexico, headed to Rosarito--and all along West talking, joking, telling us stories and giving us historical perspective of the people and the culture. Not long after the Tamale binge (West did warn us to go easy on the food at first because there would much more food to be had), we stopped for street tacos at a road side stand which was soooooo good! No, more than good...these street tacos could be served up in a 5-star restaurant for $$$$. The two men preparing the tacos for a huge crowd in open air were masters at their craft, as they busily carved meat from a spit and added it to the grill with fresh guacamole sauce and Pico. Still full from the Tamales, we each gobbled down two tacos (mine were spicy--just the way I like it) and fully enjoyed every single bite. From here, it was back in the van and headed to our first wine tasting. We pulled up to the most spectacular restaurant in downtown Rosarito. The interior of the restaurant and the wine cellar was like stepping back in time to Old Mexico. We felt like we were in a movie. We met the restaurant owner and enjoyed wine that was out of this world and warm, freshly made tortillas. After downing a couple of bottles of terrific wine, West let us loose to experience all the wonderful shops nearby. Here we gained a driver named Aaron--who is an amazingly hard worker, relieving West from his driving duties, so he could spend more time with us in the van. From here, we traveled for quite some time into the beautiful wine country of Mexico. We stopped at an Organic winery where my husband and I tasted and discovered wine so good that we bought a couple of bottles to bring home. Here we enjoyed cheese, bread, salsas & jam with our wine. A wonderful experience here and the people who run the winery so very friendly and accommodating. I would be remiss if I did not mention in this review how much LOVED West is by the Mexican people. He knows EVERYONE (and even has the Churro maker at the border on speed dial--but that's another story for another day), and it was abundantly apparent to us that everyone we came into contact with revere him as he is so kind and loving and generous to these people. The next stop was at another winery/full service restaurant (mind you, we were still full from the tamales, tacos, cheese, jams, salsas and wine we just had) where we were served an amazing 3-course lunch. Then off to two more wineries--the last one being the most amazing. West timed it at sunset, high on a hill overlooking the ocean. HEAVEN! I have maxed out on words for this review--Yelp won't allow more. I could write much more. We arrived home at midnight! It was a FULL and AMAZING day! Don't miss out on West's tour. He really cares about you as an individual and the quality and care of his company. He took real good care of us: my mom being a senior citizen and me with my dietary restrictions. He made pick up and drop off meeting areas really easy for all of us. It's an all day adventure visiting Tijuana, Rosarito Beach and Puerto Nuevo. West knows all the local people so that he knows his way in and out of the city. He is so generous; not cheap at all. Free water bottles in the van all day. We were fed w food and drinks all day until we were stuffed: tamales, Mexican chili ice pops, Mexican lunch, street tacos, Mexican candies, nuts and chili covered dried fruits, churros, and lobsters for an additional price. For an additional fee, we also went horse back riding on the Rosarito Beach for 20-30 mins. We had some wine and tequila tastings throughout the day. We also participated in live Mexican spray paint art. Just do it. You won't regret it. Its the best bang for the buck. It's worth it. Going on this tour was one of the highlights of my trip to California! I'm not sure if words can describe how amazing West is and how special he made this tour for my family and me...My parents were in town visiting from Florida and I was hesitant about taking them to Mexico during the pandemic...but West assured me he was THE BEST and he lived up to that reputation and THEN SOME...my parents are elderly and he West provided door to door service, picked us up at my place, handled our visas, took us to the Mexican market to try local delicacies like tamales, fruits, spices, juices, and bugs...then took us to friendship park and taught us about the border wall and introduced us to some really kind, amazing locals...then off to Rosarito to the beach to walk around / shop...then Puerto Nuevo where we had a lobster and margarita lunch, mariachi band, tequila coffee drinks, and saw a beautiful art gallery. On the way home we stopped at a famous taco stand and got churros to go (West literally had a contact that brought them to us in the border line - which only took about 20 minutes to get back into the states). The price of this tour is an ABSOLUTE steal in terms of price to value...West is a honest, kind, hustler who really gives out more than he gets in life, gives back to the community, and always puts the happiness of his customers first...can't say enough great things about him - other than amazing!!! Hands down, the best tour I was ever a part of. West is a very passionate and energetic guide who shows you the real Mexico which is very different from what news channels and documentaries show. When we started our tour from SD, he was not kidding about us complaining at the end of the tour of too much food. We had tamales for breakfast, fajitas/lobsters for lunch, candy tasting, one too many shots of Tequila, Ice cream with Chili, TJ Tacos and Churros before crossing the border back to the US. Food coma is guaranteed! He definitely is not your usual tour guide. He makes sure you feel comfortable, jokes around and ensures you have a jolly good time. Our trip was wonderful. West customized our day to our desires. We wanted a less touristy trip. No bus tour dropping off a 100 tourists to visit a predetermined spot. My expectations were modest. I expected the usual canned tour: a guide taking us to the same sites s/he visits on every trip, reciting the same script, faking the same smiles. But, no! This trip was amazing! West was very creative in our destinations. When one venue was crowded, he switched on the fly to another equally entertaining. We visited hidden gems for family-made food and underground wine. He shared his substantial knowledge, and in a way that was nothing but stimulating. The food, wine, views, and company were excellent. And, the price was low for all we received. I only wish I could sit down and have a long chat with West -- fascinating guy with a fascinating story.
