I couldn't tell you how long I've been a member here but it's been a long time. I really should update this review at least annually but I see that it's been six years since my last one. Yep, I'm still a member here. I've been doing better about showing up at least once a month to enjoy a tasting with a friend or two. I joined the cheese club for about a year and a half but I was the only member I ended up canceling because I could just buy the cheese when I wanted it Carruth Solana Beach has fun events throughout the week. I know they're set days and the calendar but I like to be excited surprised every time I go so I never know what I'm getting into. There is trivia night which is free. I don't officially play, but I quietly play. They have food vendors coming in. All local usually pizza or cheese or something fun. The staff has changed over a bit over the years. Everybody is so friendly and makes it feel like a neighborhood hang out spot other than the wine that warm feeling is my favorite part about coming here. Came here after having dinner at Pizza Port. It took a little bit of effort to find as the building on the street is under scaffolding and we had to make our way back. I was previously a member at Solana Beach for years but let the membership go when they expanded and it lost all the things I loved about them. This space is TINY. They have seating, a stage and the bar but compared to the Solana beach location (the one they are in now, not the original one). We had difficulty finding seating but a person was leaving, let us know and we were able to grab a table. Unfortunately the table was not in any kind of shade and it was a hot day so it shortened my time there. I decided to have a wine flight "Let it Flow" which included the chardonnay, saginee rose, merlot, unicorn blend and cabernet sauvignon. The chardonnay and rose were good. The unicorn blend was very spicy (peppery). The other wines were ok. I was happy to see the GSM back on the menu (it was a favorite of mine) but at $50 a bottle and no option to get a glass, I skipped it. The flight was $25 pre-tax. The bartender who helped us was super nice. My husband tasted 2 different wines trying to decide what he wanted. If I was in the area I would consider stopping by again. While there we did discuss renewing our wine membership as remembered our visits previously fondly. There was live music while we were there and it was nice but not intrusive. read more

We've been loyal members of Carruth Wine Cellars since they first opened in 2016. We've always loved supporting a local winery and stuck with them through the challenges of COVID, continuing to pay our membership even when things were uncertain. We even kept our membership when they reduced the wine benefit from two glasses a day to just two glasses a week -- a big change that we accepted because we wanted to continue supporting them. Unfortunately, we're now canceling our membership due to the recent 30% price increase. What's most frustrating is that we were never properly notified of this change. They sent the notice to an old email address on file that is no longer active -- it likely bounced back. Meanwhile, they failed to send it to the primary email we use and receive all other winery communications through. A change this significant should have been clearly and thoughtfully communicated to loyal members. We understand that costs go up, but this felt abrupt and poorly handled. We'll miss the wine and the atmosphere, but this change just doesn't reflect the value or customer care we used to feel as part of the Carruth community. read more

Hi, we have been a member for years here at the Carlsbad location. We're a part of the OG crew. Tonight we went in as we often do on a Sunday evening. There was no where to sit or even order. When I finally got the attention of the young lady who was working, she was very distracted and rude. When we tried to order our wine and grab our monthly bottle, she didn't even know what was the bottle of the month. She placed down a selection menu and said pick what you want. The kind gentleman next to me said you're correct in what the bottle of the month was, he said " I just picked up my bottle last week." When she came back I politely pointed out on the menu she provided what the bottle of the month was she said to us, I have to take care of other customers just select what you want. She dismissed us twice in the first 5 minutes of being there. This is very disappointing. This is actually the second time we have encountered this same young lady, the last time she disappeared on the nice young man working and was gone for quite a long time. In all the years we have been members we have never had any staff treat us in such a rude and dismissive manner. The saving grace is the wine is so good. read more

From Chicago, my daughter wanted to do a wine tasting and we discovered this hidden gem in downtown Carlsbad. I'm a rookie when it comes to wine tasting, but here's a little glimpse: We decided to do a wine tasting flight (4/5). Cool concept where you get to try samples of 5 different wines. The only one I really liked was the Sauvignon blanc, the only white wine. We also got a charcuterie board (3/5), which is ala carte rather than pre made. The fig spread and the French bread were my favorite. The ambiance (4/5) was good, a lot of people, pretty friendly. The hostess was very helpful. Took time with us. Recommended. read more

Carruth is an amazing wine tasting room in the village. I love coming here with friends to grab a glass or even a wine flight. My personal favorite wine from them is the Cabernet Sauvignon. The staff is extremely knowledgeable and friendly, especially Ryan who works at the Carlsbad village location. You have two options: "Keep it Light" or "Smooth and Silky" (each of which has its own specialties). It's time for an updated review I didn't write when I was drunk! Carruth Cellars is our favorite spot. After a few visits we quickly joined the wine club as members and enjoy going every week for our two free glasses and monthly bottle pick ups. The atmosphere is great - comfortable, quaint, and yet upscale. The bread and cheese selection is fantastic and Friday pizzas are a treat. Live music on Sundays! Staff is always friendly and accommodating. I won't drink Chardonnay anywhere else, but I love theirs. Wine tasting flights are the way to pick your favorite blend. I went with a club member (and would totally join if I were local) and we got to do some free tastings. The tastings were generous and the staff was friendly. It's a great atmosphere for a quiet, relaxing afternoon with great wines (though it does get busy later at night if that's more what you're looking for). I had the Bordeaux flight. Perfect for sipping on a warm afternoon. I highly recommend the Barrel Select Cab from Alexander Valley! Full body, notes of dark plum, fig jam, squashed raspberries, licorice. Complex and refined. Saaha and Shauna were very friendly and knowledgeable, helping us find the perfect choice for what we were craving for. Also, the vibe is very relaxed. You can easily spend a couple of hours or more. Full disclosure, we've been Carruth Cellars Wine Club members for years and years. Began going when only Solana Beach was the option. Now we lean towards the Carlsbad location. Just stopped by yesterday to pick up our wine club bottles, and had a member glass of wine. Sat at the bar and the server who told us that he is also one of the wine makers was so pleasant to us as well as anyone he encountered when we were there. Excellent Service, for sure! Appears that this location is working to add on a kitchen (WOO-HOO, for real!!!) so it is a little 'skitty wampus' inside, but not really, only if you've been going awhile. The ambiance is still cool vibe, wine tasting on the coast. Hubby chose a Claret as his glass of wine and I tasted it too, so very tasty. And I chose the Rosé of Pinot Noir. It was a warm day and red wine sounded heavy. This was tasty but a little too sweet for my liking. I drank it, no duh, but next time I would try something else. That Claret was so tasty, might go that route. We did not order bread or cheese as we were heading out for lunch elsewhere. We've had it before though, and we've never been disappointed, plus they have added some other fun little additions, like cornichons. Looking forward to seeing what their kitchen will offer, didn't look like a huge space, so probably a small plate menu, but I do not know. This location was a bit difficult to find because it's located behind Baba Coffee. Service was okay. They only serve charcuterie which was $30 for what you see in the photo. We were given our own makeshift charcuterie ingredients and it wasn't even plated. The Carlsbad location is dog-friendly and spacious enough to hold an intimate event as well. read more

I got into Carlsbad a bit early for some reservations at a table nearby, and I found this gem of a wine spot. Decided to grab a glass and relax in their spot while waiting for my table to open up, and I'm so glad that I did! The spot is open to the air, and even though it was rainy when I was there, the temperature was perfect. We go there around 8 pm on a Saturday, and it was not super busy so we were able to choose really wherever we'd like to sit. We chose to pull some chairs around one of the large barrel tables, next to the great background of the current wine barrels. They had the spot decorated slightly for the holidays with some lights and, instead of popcorn, they had a wine cork garlan which was great. As soon as we entered the spot, we were greeting by the lovely people working there. Our server was amazing and very helpful with suggestions--she even let us have a small taster to make sure we wanted the different wines. I am so grateful for how attentive and friendly she was, as my mom sometimes has trouble finding wines she really enjoys but the woman helped us find one for her. After 3 negative experiences (as a wine member), I can confidently say this place is not worth your money or business. I was sold a wine membership on my first visit and told it comes with a monthly bottle for pick up and 2 weekly wine flights or glasses. Killer deal, right? Sounds like a no brainer. My next 2 visits, I ordered wine flights and both times I was told that I couldn't get a flight (once because "they don't do flights during COVID" (when I had purchased my membership during COVID), and the second because it was an hour and a half before closing so "too close to closing")). Tonight on my visit, I walked in with a party of 7 and was telling them to sign up for a wine membership prior to arrival. We walked in to sit at the table I always sit at and a young blonde guy looked at us funny and said the table wasn't open because of COVID (I had just sat at this table 3 days prior and there were no changes or announcements with COVID or the county). I then asked the girl bartender what the difference was between that table and the two next to it that had the same set up. She said there was new rules and couldn't care less. After a member in my party asked if there were any tables available, the blonde guy said there's a wait and he didn't know how long. We then walked out to find a table open that would easily seat us.. Between the inconsistent hours and constantly closing early, bad service and random rules that change by the day and employee, I decided to cancel my membership and give my business elsewhere that deserves it during these trying times. read more

I was actually impressed by this small urban winery in Carlsbad Village. The tasting flight was reasonably priced and quite delicious. Is it amazing? Not really, but it's decent and we had a great time exploring their offerings. We didn't try any of their whites but the reds that we did try were fun. My wife and I thought their Syrah was the best! We will definitely be back for another tasting before a night out for dinner. It's nice to have a wine bar nearby without having to drive too far. read more

Delicious! We spent a week in Carlsbad and Oceanside area, tried several different wineries and tasting rooms and this was our favorite. We had a great experience. Our server Jay was fun and fabulous and made our time wine tasting great. We tried several reds, most were okay, we liked the GSM alot, the others were just okay. But the Zinfandel was especially delicious. We highly recommend this tasting room, and if you come early they even have a happy hour. They don't serve food, but you can order pizza and have it delivered. The server always makes the difference, Thanks Jay for doing such a good job serving us. Actually just happened to stop in here and really glad we did! Happy hour was going on (4-6pm) so we got $3 off our glasses of wine! I'd recommend getting the Sauvignon Blanc if you're looking for a white, especially during summer. It's so crisp and refreshing with delicious flavor - I've been wanting more since we left!
