I enjoyed my drink here; I went with the Abuelita instead of my normal old fashioned. While it's a shame that you can only have 1 drink here due to their alcohol licensing. Came here to try a new local distillery. Upon walking in the lay out and decorations were nice and I was excited to try the drinks. My boyfriend ordered an old fashion with their rye whiskey which they were out of, so the bartender recommended another whiskey. I ordered the surfliner and was really looking forward to a refreshing semi fruity drink. The bartender made the drinks one at a time and my boyfriend wasn't going to start drinking until mine was done which meant his got watered down a little. We got our drinks and sat at the wooden table eager to try. Upon my first sip I noticed that it had a strong ginger flavor. I'm assuming the bartender grabbed ginger beer rather than pineapple. Not a big fan of whiskey mules so I was very disappointed. I was going to ask him to remake it but I tried my boyfriend's drink and it did not taste like a traditional old fashion at all. Way too sweet! After that I just wanted to finish the drinks (not going to waste $22) and head out. So overall not a great experience. May try again when there is another bartender to see if the drinks are better but wouldn't be my first choice place. read more

Small distillery in a business park. If you like whiskey this is the place to go.

This was discovered through a quick search on Google Maps after we decided to see what else was nearby. Parking was decent when we got there and when we entered the building, it was a pretty small location. There was another group at the counter drinking and talking with the staff (there was only one guy working). After they left, our group was the only ones left and we had the full attention of the staff. We ordered a flight to try out the different types of spirits that they had available. The staff was very friendly and he even offered to show us around the back where they make their spirits. When we went back to our drinks, he offered to give us a several samples of the gin and whiskey that they recently distilled. Overall, the staff was a pretty cool guy. He was very friendly and informative. The drinks were decent and parking was not a problem. Only thing was that the place was pretty quiet at night. It felt kinda awkward to be the only ones there. read more

If you fancy yourself a whisky lover, this is the place for you! I've traveled he whisky trail in Scotland on numerous occasions and I can't remember a smoother tasting whisky. Their signature west coast whiskey is smooth beyond belief with a great taste and it will leave you feeling great the next day. They also have an outstanding Rum and Gin, tremendous customer service and fantastic membership deal. If you like spirits give these folks a try, you won't be disappointed! It kills me to deduct a star from this place but I have to based on the fact that you are only allowed a 1.5 ounce serving per visit...which isn't their fault. Its how the law works, however, would have been great to find that out BEFORE we ordered. I also suggested they add a note to the menu so that other newbies know the rules. With that said, the service was exceptionally friendly and the drinks were to DIE FOR. That's why it literally pained me to not be allowed a second one. I can't stop thinking about that daiquiri. So yummy. The prices were really steep though. A 3 ounce drink was $10. I take a pass at complaining about that because it was so darn good but would love to see them find a way to allow more cocktails at a friendlier price. I love supporting these types of places, especially when the people are so friendly (so often you go to these small places and the owners are arrogant, not here!) The tasting room was very clean, but very very small. I will go back and buy a bottle of their yummy rum so I can make some of those daiquiris at home. Still dreaming about it..... Definitely worth a stop in!!! Lets support them so they can get whatever licensing they need so I can enjoy more cocktails! read more

Visiting family over Christmas and stopped in to sample some whiskeys. The owner and his wife were there and were very friendly and knowledgeable. Had a sample of several spirits, all of which were very good. Others in our party had cocktails, which were also very good. Owner gave us a brief tour and shared his knowledge of spirits with us. I was impressed with the rye, very smooth and a chocolate flavor on your palette. Bought a bottle of it for home. When I'm back in CA,I will be back for more! Thank you! read more

I've had several opportunities to drink these spirits straight up, on the rocks and in custom cocktails. Made me reconsider my loathing for gin. Made me rekindle my romance with spiced rum. Astonished me with a local SoCal whiskey, what?! Is that even possible? Forget craft beer central San Diego... the future is full of spirits! I recommend calling ahead or making sure they are open, because they are small batch and artisan, they aren't BevMo, nor are they Burger King -- you don't get it your way on the right now super highway -- but thank god for small (and delicious) favors. I gotta say, I am continually impressed at the craft options popping up in this fair city. 117 West Spirits is a great example of the love for craft that these people have. My family and I came in for the first time on Fathers Day weekend and had a great time. Yes, the tasting room is small by some standards, but it proved to not be an issue and mad the experience more cozy. The spirits were genuinly good, and I particularly enjoyed the cocktails. Many of the accoutrements (big words today, are you impressed?) were most all house made and the gentlemen behind the bar even offered some off menu options which all turned out fantastic. Now, that coveted 5th star will be forthcoming soon I'm sure as the team here is just getting their stride going and will be offering some more spirits and cocktail variations soon. I can't wait to try them and pop in that 5th one....star that is, cocktails I'm usually good at four. :) read more

DON'T MISS THIS! I'm a wine drinker, my husband loves his IPA's, so we were AMAZED at the unique and thoughtful spirits at 116 West! We decided not to have mixed drinks (although this WOULD make a really fun girls' night out/date night destination) so we could taste and appreciate the subtleties of what this brilliant alchemist does. (Seriously, Justin has a PhD in chemistry and creates some really innovative, complex flavors!) I was surprised that I enjoyed my husband's flight of whiskey as much as I did, and picked up a bottle of the spiced rum as a gift after savoring the rum flight because it's such a crowd pleaser...Layers of spice and citrus, not too sweet, and DELICIOUS, even straight up!
