As a local restaurant server, there are certain expectations I have when dining out. I have given this restaurant three chances, and it has failed me each time. The food is far below mediocre and has the service to match. Expect to wait 10-20 minutes on a slow day for drinks and expect rude, argumentative service. Chris (tall man, big beard), was our server this last visit. I brought in a water bottle and was immediately told I could not have it. Understandable, it is a health policy. He snatches the water bottle from my hand and says, "it might be vodka." I ask if I could close the silicone straw on the bottle, and he proceeds to put his finger IN my straw and close it for me. I ask for the manager on duty, Jody, explained what happened, and am told, "he was right. You should know not to bring it since you work in a restaurant," arguing with me that I was wrong and that I should know that his hands are clean. He asked repeatedly where I worked as if trying to frighten me. I asked him calmly to speak to the server (I'm sure they were gossiping about it) after being talked over again and again. We promptly received a new server afterward. I am shocked and disappointed and will not be coming back to this location. read more

First: you're not allowed to call them San Diego fish tacos if they beats zero resemblance to San Diego fish tacos. My husband, who is a San Diego native, born and raised, was excited to try this place out for a possible taste of home so far away from Southern California, and was deeply disappointed. We ordered a Carne Asada burrito (which was mediocre at best and a very small portion size) and the fish tacos. As to the fish taco... It disappointed on so many levels. To have a factual understanding: a San Diego or Baja style fish Taco, is two corn tortillas with beer battered cod or halibut, with cabbage, cream sauce and salsa Fresca on top. That is the standard. Now, I know everyone has different ways of making tacos, but the tacos we were served were on a single flour tortilla, with lettuce, and what we are 90% sure was a frozen fish stick, chopped up as to not appear as said fish stick. I'm giving it two stars, instead of one, because the restaurant is clean, and the staff were nice enough, but were completely uninterested in conversing when my husband asked about the San Diego connection, and was told "it's the owner, and he's not here" just before walking away. I know this sounds like a tirade and not to be unfair to what seemed like decent people working here, it makes me sad to think that someone who has never been to San Diego would eat at this restaurant and think this establishment represents what is an amazing multi-generational heritage of Mexican-American cuisine. I seriously cannot believe that I paid for this meal. Let me say that this was my third visit to Baja Bean in Staunton, and i let it go with no review. Until today. I got the fish tacos which had a few tiny pieces of what tasted like chopped, overcooked fish sticks in them. No batter-fried goodness with cabbage like fish tacos are supposed to be. My daughter got chicken fingers. Pretty straightforward, right? Nope. Dried out, overcooked chicken patties cut in half is what came, with a pile of the most disgusting pinto beans I've ever had. I swear they were mixed with cat food. This place really is awful. If you want Mexican food, or even edible food, don't go here. Just drive to Harrisonburg to the taco truck and don't bother with anything in Staunton at all. I have yet to eat any even passable Mexican food in Staunton. Oh, and while you're at Baja, because I know you'll go anyway, have a look at how dirty the floor is. Yes, I believe that is caked-on dirt and mildew around the bottoms of the booths. I am unsure as to why I continue to go back to BB. The restaurant is grungy and the food just isn't that great. The chips, which you pay for, are usually stale and the salsa has no kick but A LOT of sugar! Let me start off by saying, I am a long time resident of Staunton and have therefore eaten at the Baja many times. What has kept me coming back time and time again has generally been the good food, this was definitely not the case with my last visit. I usually order the Enchiladas Cubanas, but I thought I would branch out a little and order something else, big mistake on my part. I ended up ordering "the Whole Enchilada" promising "An ENORMOUS enchilada filled with shredded chicken, corn salsa, & cheddar cheese topped with tomatillo sauce & jack cheese. Served over rice." While it did indeed encompass all of these ingredients,"ENORMOUS would not be the word I would use to describe this dish. In fact the only thing that was "ENORMOUS" about this dish was the price. Now granted I am not looking for an "enchilada built for two" but I am looking for a decent sized meal. Then to add insult to injury the whole thing was rather bland and unassuming. The last couple of times that I have ordered from the Baja I have noticed a downward trend in food quality. I am not sure if there is a new owner, but from now on I think I will pass. read more

The service was very nice and attentive, but that's the only thing that's good about it. The food didn't seem fresh. I had the chori pollo and the rice did not taste good. My girlfriend and I both had dishes that came with black beans, but hers and mine were completely different colors. It also reeked of cigarettes at 11am. Talk about off-putting. Just happened into Baja Bean, in a hurry, hungry and slightly stressed at our timing, walked in, got seated immediately and sat down to a fantastic meal in no time, the fish tacos were the absolute best I have had since I was in Jamaica and I must say I set that bar pretty high, and my daughter had the chicken pesto burrito which I tasted as well and it was phenomenal. The staff was courteous, promt and just wonderful, I cannot recommend Baja Bean highly enough, if your in Staunton stop in you will not regret it!!! read more

I like the menu; it's quite friendly for vegetarians. My chile relleno wouldn't be notable in New Mexico, but it was an Anaheim pepper - not the usual east coast poblano! The flan is made in-house and is tasty. The atmosphere is college-town funky. read more

I love Baja! Great beer, delicious food and not full of salt, cheese or anything that might have come from Taco Bell. The unique set up allows for smoking in the bar, and a separate non-smoking restaurant side as well. Beer and nachos here make a great afternoon. read more

We havent been here for about eight months and when we came 4th of july week we found the menu had changed somewhat food was not the same prices increased (not by much) and didn't recognize the staff, dont know if the owners changed but dont think i will be going back. Great local restaurant. The food is yummy, plentiful, and cheap, the staff are friendly, and the service is quick. There are two sections- the bar is smoking, the restaurant is non smoking. This is a local hangout so it is a good place to go if you want to meet the locals. They also have live music sometimes on the weekends. read more

Stopped here on my way back from a hiking trip at midday on a Monday holiday when very little else was open, and man, what a find. Decided to stop here with my husband and 2 other family members on Saturday afternoon. While my food was ok, one of us had a horrible experience. One member of our party of four ordered the fajitas and when it was delivered it had a long black hair in the food. We told the waiter when he finally came back with our silverware and he didn't even apologize. Just took it back and another one was delivered once we were almost finished with our meal. The waiter came back to deliver the ticket, leaned on the extra chair and said "how's your hairless fajitas?". I was in total shock. I couldn't believe he said that. My husband and I put out our card but the family member with fajitas was still eating. The waiter stood there, once again leaning on the chair, waiting for him to pay his ticket. I mean who does that? He received his food after the rest of us... Give him a chance to eat! Needless to say we will NEVER return to this place. It felt as though we were not welcome. We moved to this area last July from the Central Valley of California and have been searching for decent Mexican food. Last Thursday we decided to check out Baja Bean and we're pleasantly surprised by the food. It really wasn't the kind of Mexican dishes that we were accustomed to, but our family of four all agreed that it was absolutely awesome. I ordered the So Gouda Tacos and am still amazed at all of the different taste sensations I experienced as I savored each and every bite. They even had Sopapillas on the dessert menu, something I never found in California. I grew up on the NM/AZ border and Sopapillas were a staple, not just a dessert. Baja Bean's Sopapillas weren't as good as those I grew up with, but they were still awesome! Baja Bean gets 5 stars read more

you don't expect to find such imaginative dishes in staunton. the salsa is homemade, the entrees are good and the vegetables fresh. great atmosphere for people watching on the street. interesting selection of beers on tap as well as margaritas. the staff seems to be...well rather different. it's southwest virginia though....it's not a sprint...it's a marathon. if you want fast service, go to the drive thru at taco bell. read more
