Discovered Bai Mai Thai while visiting Detroit recently, and was quite delighted by it. I didn't eat in the restaurant itself at any point, so I can't speak to the level of service when dining in, but I will say that the place can be quite busy for dinner (especially over the weekend) and take a while to get your takeout order (I've picked up takeout myself, as well as ordered from DoorDash). That said, the portions are HUGE (easily could have been 2-3 meals worth) and delicious. My main regret, if you can call it that... perhaps it was just an unfortunate circumstance, during my stay in Detroit was that the hotel room I was staying in didn't have a microwave, so I ended up with a lot of leftovers that I didn't get to fully enjoy. *sad face* (And by no means is that the fault of the restaurant, obviously. I'm mainly saying that the food is so good, even as leftovers, that I'm bummed to not have been able to enjoy it all because they give you SO FREAKIN' MUCH.) Side note: I asked for extra crushed peanuts on my pad thai order that I ordered for takeout one night and they COVERED it with peanuts. As someone who loves the texture component, this made me so happy... so many places skimp on extra crushed peanuts. Not this place! TL;DR. Highly recommend for when you're in Detroit.

This is my go-to Thai spot for carryout. I usually stick with the same order: Gaeng Gai (curry chicken with white rice) and a side of crab rangoons. (not pictured) The food is consistently flavorful, always hot, and very satisfying. I've also tried their noodles, which were just as delicious. The ambience inside is nothing special, it's your typical Thai restaurant with simple decor. They do have a small bar area and some indoor seating, but I personally recommend it for takeout. The staff is limited, and dine-in service can feel a bit slow, so ordering online is the most convenient option. Overall, this place is a solid choice for carryout and is reasonably priced. One of these days I'll branch out and try something new, but for now, my usual order is just too good to pass up.

Truly excellent Thai food in a spacious atmosphere with cool Thailand decorations plus great service and also very convenient WiFi (you just scan the QR code and it automatically connects). Got the pad thai curry noodle and also a dessert called Kow Tum Mud that is sweet red bean and bananas wrapped in rice rolls. Highly recommended!

Tom Yum Soup (Large) with Shrimp.

I stopped in on a cold Monday night (yes they're opened on Mondays) after yoga. I just wanted a Tom Yum soup. The broth was vibrant, juicy and everything you expect in Thai. I had hot sake, but only because they were out of the Thai iced tea. The tea they sell is bottled and that turned me off. Plus they were out, which explains the 1 star deduction. I was surprised to walk in to a full bar and that had me wondering. Does this place get interesting on a Friday night? I imagine old Detroit - the folks who have lived in the neighborhood for generations (mostly black), meets the hipsters who moved in down the street in the last decade. Do they commingle here? I saw said hipsters leaving with carry out on my way in. Do they just dip in and scurry out? I wonder. Either way, the owners are a great, hardworking family who deserve your business. Give them a try. Sit at a booth. Stay a while.

Kow Pad Dinner (Thai Fried Rice) With extra egg and bean sprouts and tomatoes.

Good fried rice, fresh and flavorful. and great customer service. Will highly recommend.

Vegetable Curry

I am so happy I finally got to dine in! Started with an order of the most crispy and delicious spring rolls. The table has chili sauce which went perfectly with the sweet sauce. For the main course I had the veggie curry which comes with tofu. So full of vegetables and ordered med spicy still made me sweat. It's a good thing our friendly server hooked us up with a carafe of water. Love the old school dark vibe. Looking forward to returning.

I have been searching Metro Detroit for my favorite Thai restaurant and I finally found it in Bai Mai Thai! The restaurant is in a strip mall on Lafayette - so convenient and free parking! It has a fun vibe, with ample seating and also a bar if you are so inclined. We ordered soup, spring rolls and two entrees. Our food was brought promptly by our friendly server and it was just perfect. We ordered our food medium spice and I will say it was perfect for our tastes, but if you shy away from heat I would order it mild. The soup was the best Tom Yum I have ever had in Detroit and both our dishes were fantastic. Our friends also really enjoyed their meals so we had 4 thumbs up from our table of four. My only problem is that they are so far away from me that I can't order carryout every week. When I am in the area I plan on going back. Sooo good!

I liked the question "what Spicy level do you want ... (mild/medium/spicy)" for each dish. Decent sized portions and tasty food. The many and varied Pad Thai plates beckoned and we tried the omlette Pad Thai which was delicious and piping hot. Chicken Tom Yum soup and shrimp fried rice also were pleasurable. The atmosphere is really casual - the layout is more of a cafe than a formal dining room. I would definitely return and with friends.

To start, we got moo krob (deep fried pork belly) which is the Thai version of Chinese siu yook. I have to say, I like siu yook so much more - it's a lot more flavorful having been marinated with five spice and served with delicious sweet hoisin sauce for dipping. The pork here was bland and the sauce (fish sauce based) was pretty one note. For my entree, I got rad na (rice noodles with gravy, Chinese broccoli, carrots, and choice of meat - I got pork) which was one of the best I've ever had! They used fresh rice noodles and sautéed it properly to give it the "wok hei" (wok-seared flavor). The gravy was deep and flavorful and the portion size was very good. If everything else was as good as my entree, I'd give this restaurant 5 stars. Unfortunately, my mom's Kao mun gai (steamed chicken with rice and "special sauce") was awful. She asked if the dish had any spice because she can't do spicy, and the server said no, so she decided she'd try it. The chicken was way overcooked and dry, with no flavor at all. The sauce, the only thing providing flavor and moisture, was spicy so that she couldn't eat it. We asked if there was any sauce she could get instead that wasn't spicy, and they said no, but they can give us a bottle of soy sauce. So my mom used some of that, and also took some of my rad na gravy. But because the chicken was so dry and bland, it was beyond saving. My dad got the Thai basil fried rice, mild spice. It was definitely hotter than other Thai restaurants' mild, and my dad said the spice overwhelmed the other flavors. I tried some of it and it was not bad, but nothing remarkable. They told us that traditionally, it's served with the rice on the side, which was strange to me because then it's not fried rice - it's sautéed meat and veggies with rice on the side. I am curious about how some of the other dishes taste here, but it's a shame that 3/4 of the things we ordered were mediocre to downright bad. While I enjoyed my entree, I felt bad my parents didn't enjoy their food.

Our food is always excellent and I like to try new things all the time. But we still have favorites. Appetizers. It's hard not to order the fried wontons, my spouse's favorite. We both enjoy the apple or papaya salad. And I'm a sucker for tum yum soup, theirs does not disappoint. Entrees we often enjoy traditionals like Pad See Ewe and Fried Rice. They are staples for a reason. But I've enjoyed trying many of Sue's recommendations. And I love a ground chicken dish she recommended served with lettuce cups and a fried egg. I wish I remembered the name. But it's one of her favorites. She will know! Be sure to ask for the Thai pickled lime and hot peppers condiment (upon request). My newest obsession is their Chicken Satay salad. It's fantastic. So fresh and delicious, not to mention gorgeous. I can't imagine anyone being disappointed. I can't tell you about dessert because we are always too full. But I'm determined to try her mango rice because I'm confident it will be amazing . If you have tried this place, it's worth a visit. Thai-Osha -- Where Laughter, Love, and Crab Rangoons Fill Your Soul…read more There are some places that feed more than just your appetite -- they feed your spirit. And Thai-Osha is one of those rare gems. From the moment I stepped inside, I knew I wasn't just walking into another Thai restaurant. I was walking into someone's heart and soul. Someone's home. The space is cozy, welcoming, decorated in beautiful Thai decor, and intimate -- like a little sanctuary where you immediately feel at ease and ready for home cooking. But the real magic? That comes from the owner. Let me tell you about him. He greeted me like an old friend -- with the kind of warmth and joy that you can't fake. So Funny, charming, down-to-earth, and so full of light... he has this way of making you feel like you've known him forever. It's like you're not just a customer -- you're family. The kind of energy he brings is rare. You can feel it in the way he laughs, the way he connects, the way he sees people. His spirit is so vibrant and kind, it honestly feels contagious. I left with a full stomach and full heart and a smile I couldn't wipe off my face. That's the kind of business you want to support -- one that feels built on love. The service? Fast. Friendly. The whole staff radiates the same positive energy as the owner -- everyone just seems genuinely happy to be there, and that joy spills over to the customers. You don't feel like you're just being served -- you feel like you're being welcomed. And don't even get me started on the food. Every dish was an experience. The flavors? Out of this world. Fresh, authentic, deeply comforting -- the kind of food that takes you places and lingers in your memory. The crab rangoons? I'm still dreaming about them. I could have ate them all day. Home Made, Creamy, perfectly made -- I nearly cried. Everything we ordered was beyond amazing, and I have no doubt that anything you choose from that menu will blow you away. But honestly? Even if you didn't come for the food (though you absolutely should), come to meet and talk to him. Come meet the kind, hilarious, big-hearted owner who reminds you that people like him still exist in the world -- people who lead with love, who make strangers feel like friends, and who carry a light that lifts others just by being near them. In a world that feels fast, disconnected, and overstimulated -- Thai-Osha is a breath of fresh air. It's cozy. It's sincere. It's the kind of place you want to keep coming back to. You're truly missing out on something special -- the kind of special that fills both your stomach and your soul. Let's keep celebrating places like this -- the ones that remind us what kindness tastes like.
