My wife and I were in the mood for authentic Thai food and decided to check out Bahn Thai. Based on pictures and reviews, it looked like that's what we were going to get. We were sadly mistaken... Our first warning sign should have been when our waitress was taking our order. They were out of the Masaman double beef curry. When my wife ordered an alternate item, our waitress would say they were out of it. They were out of or not serving about half of the items on the menu. This was sort of acceptable, as our waitress mentioned that they were going to close for a month starting the next day. Fine, we were already seated and might as well try other dishes. We ended up ordering beef pad Thai and Panang curry with beef. 30 minutes go by and we still haven't gotten our entrees. Meanwhile, there was a party of 3 next to us that came in shortly after us. They had already received their food. An hour goes by and still nothing. Meanwhile, the party of 3 had already finished their food and we're getting the bill. I went up to the waitress to check on the status of our food. She went to the back and came out shortly and actually said, "I can't really talk to them back there, but they look like they're plating your food now, so probably about 5 more minutes". I was very confused. Why can't you talk to the cooks in the back? Oh well, 5 more minutes we waited, then 10 minutes. Finally, we were starving and decided to walk out, letting our waitress know to cancel our orders. She replied, saying she would let the cooks know. This is the first time I've ever walked out of a restaurant. It was a pity, as I was really craving that Pad Thai. I was baffled that the party next to us, as well as other parties were receiving their food before us, though I did notice most dishes that were coming out were soups. I'm not sure if the cooking staff had issues with other food. A point to note, most patrons who were getting their food before us were white, while my wife and I are Asian. It's a humble mom and pop run restaurant that serves authentic Thai cuisine in Tallahassee. The service was amazing, but be warned that it does take a while for the food to come out. It's worth the wait as you can taste with every bite the freshness and the quality of the ingredients. I ordered that Pad See Ew and they ask you for your desired spice level. This is traditional Thai, so don't be a hero and order the spiciest level possible! I had ordered somewhere between mild and medium, and it had a really good kick to it. We waited our time, I got Tom kha which was delicious and a good serving, then we got our curries. My duck curry was bright, popped with color and flavor, the fried basil leaves were a nice and tasty garnish, but the duck just tastes like fried chicken (was also expensive for the portion). Now onto the hardest part, we paid $7+ each, for the taro and pumpkin custards, they were these nasty, dry desserts that looked like they wanted to be flan, ironically tje pumpkin was topped with mango, when they said they were out. The foods here is LEGIT! Best Thai foods in town. I'm here to visit my daughter and we are 20 mins away but will drive there for authentic Thai foods anytime. I arrived late (1:45) for lunch but the website said they were open. The sign on the door said they were closed, but there were people going in. I asked if they were open or closed and when I said it was just me, I was invited in. They are suffering from a severe staff shortage! However, the inside was very clean! I ordered Tom Kah soup chicken and it was very good. I also ordered the yellow curry with chicken. The bowl was generous and the rice delicious. The curry had chunks of potatoes, zucchini, onions and peanuts. The flavor was delicious. I usually like my food spicy but because of a silly medical issue can only have things mild for a while. The owner , Ken, was the greeter, cashier, waiter and table busser. His wife (I forgot her name) was the cook and kept things running smoothly. They have one waitress for now and are very understaffed so please be patient. After Christmas, family will be coming in to help them and things will get better. They will even open earlier in the afternoon to accommodate state workers that go to lunch at 11:30. I will be back to this location. I stopped going there because of service and food not tasting the same when it was off the South Monroe location. There was once upon a time I ate here at least once a week or every other week. The ambiance may not be up to par but the food was delicious. Chicken basil rolls are crunchy and full of flavor. There was plenty of leftovers. This is one of those hole in the wall restaurants that make some of the tastiest food in the city. I think the best way to enjoy eating here is to just take it as it comes because they know how to prepare these recipes the correct way and customizing it takes away from the overall taste experience. They have nice decor, nice settings, and very very well thought out recipes. Servers take on multiple roles; I recommend asking for everything at once and leaving them alone after that. They will bring you everything you ask for and check on you but you don't really need anything when the food comes anyway as it is a complete thing once it hits your table. Bahn Thai is the best Thai Restaurant in Tallahassee for taste and value. Bahn Thai has the most flavorful curries, the largest portions, and more veggies in their dishes than the other Thai restaurants in Tally. They recently re-opened at their new location: 2531 Apalachee Pkwy, Tallahassee, FL 32301. They are only accepting take out orders right now. I am not sure when they will have dine-in service. They only have 5 main dishes that can be made vegan (yellow curry, panang curry, red curry, green curry and drunken noodles) because the cook wants to make the other entrees with fish sauce. However the other Thai restaurants in town don't have a lot of veggies in their curries and the sauces are super bland. It's worth it. Plus they have lots great vegan appetizers - veggie gyoza, avocado spring rolls, vegetable samosas, fried tofu, and vegetable spring rolls. Stopped here recently with a friend. The Pad Thai was a bit spicier than I am used to which was OK but not what I expected. I usually order my dish "Thai Spicy" which is met with disbelief in most cases and the question "are you sure?". Yes I'm sure and many Thai dishes are very warm. Others are generally quite tame. The coconut milk curry used in Massaman comes to mind.. anyway, I think you'd be happy with the restaurant, and just be sure to inquire as to the level of spiciness of the dish comes in order accordingly. In my opinion the chicken curry and the Pad Thai "Thai spicy" are the way to go. The right amount of heat and and curry to make you miss Thailand. This my third favorite Thai place. Thai tea with whipped cream: 5 stars. I first tried w/o mixing the cream in and is very good but not too sweet. I can't believe it has taken me so long to visit this place: I've been missing out! We took Pad Thai and Pad Se Ew to go and it was really great! They were both flavorful and the spice level was perfect. There was also a good amount of meat in each dish (some other places put like 8 pieces of chicken). Also, each meal could really serve as two meals, so it's also a great value! The man taking my order on the phone was very nice and, in person, prompt and respectful. The service and the food here is amazing. Now in a new location near capital circle I found this great spot. I didn't take pictures of the appetizers or the deliciously Thai sweet tea but I can vouch how tasty they all were. We had the spring rolls and crab ragoons. They lasted 2 seconds on the plate. lol. I ordered the beef pad thai and the pork skewers, though the waiter informed me that they didn't have enough ingredients. My brother ordered drunken noodles, though 15 minutes later we were informed that they didn't have enough ingredients. My brother then proceeded to change his order to chicken pad thai. The bathroom was clean. The wait was one hour and nine minutes. However,the food was delicious, and rich in flavor. If you ever come here, you should expect some wait time. read more

Bahn Thai has had quite a few incarnations over the past few years. We were there recently and were told by one person that the owners are new, and by another that they are not new. So not sure what to believe. The food was pretty good, but the service remains a bit lacking. We went with a group of 8. When we arrived the place was only 1/2 full, yet whoever greeted us said that with 8 people the food would likely come out at different times and would likely take quite a while. When we asked why, we were told there are only 2 people in the kitchen: the owner and his wife. We talked it over and decided to take a chance. Contrary to what the server said, the food came out in a reasonable time. We had the Kramer Rangoon, a tofu stir fry, and pad see ewe with chicken. The playing was nice, and the food was pretty good.
