The staff was kind and let me know about all the options to the side to add to my order In terms of utensils, sauces, etc. I ordered miso soup and edamame for starters which was pretty standard. Definitely didn't disappoint. I ordered a cooked tuna nigiri but received raw which is fine. It was okay just not super fresh or full of a flavor. The sushi roll I ordered was good, but at this time I don't remember the name. Decent amount of seating, though it can get absolutely swamped during peak times, especially if there's a big football game, parent's weekend, event, etc. making seating a little difficult (no fault of the restaurant) Considering the traffic/volume and turnover, they keep the tables and restrooms pretty clean. I wouldn't consider this a "fusion" restaurant, but rather an eclectic selection of east Asian cuisine such as Japanese, Chinese and Thai. Sushi, noodles, stir fry, etc. They do a very good job of offering and labeling for allergies and dietary constraints, including gluten free, vegetarian, nuts and shellfish. All of the food is freshly prepared and tasty. The portions, especially the noodle dishes are quite generous and could potentially be shared between a couple of people. The staff is friendly and good with communication. Its the kind of place where if you order at the counter then you bring a flag/marker to your table and they'll find you and bring it over when it's ready. Plentiful drinks are available in both bottles and cans, and there are self serve fountain drinks etc. as well. You're getting a generously portioned, fresh, tasty meal at a very reasonable price. No, it's not top-end Asian cuisine, nor are they pretending to be. It's a quick-bite eatery putting out large quantities of food. For what they're doing, they're meeting all expectations in a clean and friendly environment. Certainly would return. As an aside, I've been told that there is some type of a martial arts facility in the floor above, so every once in a while, be prepared to hear the echoing crash of a human being being thrown to the ground above. I placed an online order and realized minutes later that game-day traffic made pickup impossible. I called within 10 minutes (well before the food should have been ready) and politely asked to cancel. The hostess was kind and said she'd connect me with a manager. When Holden got on the phone, he sighed dramatically and said, "Sure, we can cancel. I mean, it's $40 worth of food being thrown away, but sure, we can throw it right in the trash." His tone was sarcastic and condescending, as though I had inconvenienced him personally. A professional response would have been as simple as: "I'm sorry, the order is already being prepared, so we can't cancel it." Instead, I was treated to theatrics and hostility. The noodles were not traditional thick noodles, but the sauce was light and tasty and the size of the dish was large enough for me to share. Counter service so it's efficient! We had ichiban roll sushi, the Wok your way teriyaki chicken rice bowl, sweet potato fries, egg rolls and a salad. The teriyaki sauce was flavorful and not too salty, the egg rolls were not greasy and had a generous portion of filling so it wasn't all egg roll wrapper! The Ichiban roll could've been a more generous portion, the rolls were a bit petite for a sushi roll and the shrimp tempura was somewhat mushy and the BBQ eel topping was sparse. Stopped by here yesterday with a colleague for a quick bite. The prices are very reasonable based on the portion sizes. I had the coconut curry bowl with chicken. It was served with white rice. I asked for medium spicy but it was flaming hot. You knew it was going to be hot simply based on the amount of pepper flakes piled atop the bowl. My colleague was a little disappointed that nobody mentioned the daily special upon ordering. It is also relevant to note that they were NOT busy. We were the only two customers in the entire restaurant when we arrived. Well apparently it was something like "two roll Tuesday", but this being unbeknownst to her (yesterday was our first time dining there), she ordered just ONE roll and the crab rangoon (the latter of which were delicious). Anywho, the cashier made no mention of the special that she could have easily capitalized on. It is also worth mentioning that the specials are written on a discreet sign near the place where you pick up a menu - not exactly large print in an area where prospective diners would be looking. The food was good, but the ordering process was not. The gentleman who took our order also failed to mention the sauce bar, which another colleague told us about when we returned to the office from lunch. Call me petty, but this is getting 4 stars for one pesky reason. You'll have to read through to get at it. Great ambiance, service, and flavor. What else is there when it comes to enjoying a restaurant? I came solo - in between client meetings. Normally, I try to go three times before putting down some thoughts but since I've been to Big Masa plenty of times I figured I had license to publish after the first visit. Great space. I'm sure the Feng Shui set would approve. Clean lines - open layout - totally IG-compliant backdrops! Ordered pad Thai with Chicken, Thai hot. For you would-be "Thai hot orderers", be forewarned. I always order the hottest available when a scale is given because my experience is that it's seldom unbearable. This doesn't cross the bearable line but it definitely lets me know I'm AT the line. Here, Thai hot is no joke. I will likely order 3-star moving forward. To be clear - this wasn't the kind of HOT that obliterates all flavor - it was very tasty; a "hurt so good" kinda thing. It's just that I was struggling! Incidentally, this ISN'T the reason for the four stars. Immense portion. Tasty - all good. So - why the four stars? I'm a stickler for unbroken rice stick noodles. I make pad Thai at home plenty as it is, and I'm able to make a 4-portion service without breaking EVERY single strand into sub 2" lengths. It's possible there were some noodles over 3", but - without exaggeration, there wasn't a SINGLE noodle that showed up in its original packaging length. I DID bring this up to the very friendly and accommodating server (we recognized each other from Big Masa) and he explained that the "Thai Hot" processing likely broke up the noodles. My sense, instead, was that I got the "shake" from the rice stick package after all the good ones were taken out for the better customers. I say this in jest. I'm CONFIDENT this had to be some 11:10AM kitchen oversight. I know that the next time I order pad thai here, the noodles will be intact. After all, if an amateur like me can pull it off at home - I know the pros can too! Why is this a big deal, you ask? YOU try eating 2" rice stick noodle pad Thai with chopsticks! This is a five-star place - just as "Big Masa" is. I just need some time to get over this prank! My picture will help illustrate the maddening moments of futility. I actually had to use a fork and spoon... Yep - I know this makes me sound peevish and whiny... p.s., my initial reaction was that this was karma for my 10% tip - a percentage offered on the credit card prompt and entirely appropriate for walk-up counter service. Think about it... McDonald's is a walk-up counter service business - and employees deliver it to your table - so I quickly shook off my first reaction as absurd. Such great service! The cashier helped me out to find exactly what would match my dietary preferences since I don't eat eggs or meat. She did a great job and even told me about their Friday deal which made my day because I got a free eggroll out of it!! They literally have a different deal every night which is just amazing when you need to save money as a student. On top of that they had a veggie option for about everything even the eggroll. The atmosphere was great very eclectic but lively and bright which makes it very inviting. They even have the WiFi password written down for you there already so there's no awkward conversation to ask for it. *UPDATE*: Came in again in June and the general manager, Holden, kept the good vibe going here still. Went for lunch with my friends and we had a very nice experience. Brittany greeted us and we felt right at home in the casual, comfortable and somewhat vibey dining room, which features cool international dance music. The customers are mostly younger people associated with the university and that is the standard in College Town. If you aren't familiar with this area of the city, College Town is located a couple of blocks south of the campus and features businesses for shopping, eating and drinking. If you've never visited the area, it's worth a trip. Back to Little Masa. When we picked up our soft drinks we noted the socially responsible straws that accompanied the plastic cups. Our food was delivered by the staff to our table, and the food was hot and timely. For appetizers we had Steamed Bao, with lemongrass beef. This was a nice starter. There wasn't one overpowering flavor. It was the perfect hint of lemon and beef, and the flavor was on point. We also had chicken potstickers, which were crispy and flavorful. All of us agreed that the starters were very good. For the entree, two of us ordered tonkotsu Ramen. The bowl was visually appealing, and as my friend said, it was sitting comfortably between good and great. The pork belly had the perfect texture, the amount was plentiful and the flavor was excellent. There was a nice mix of garlic and pickled ginger. The highlight was the soft boiled egg, as it was perfectly prepared and super tasty. And the broth, loved it! My other friend ordered the Shoyu Ramen. He said the fish cakes were really good, with a perfect balance of flavor, as he praised the nice blend of spice in the fish sauce. This is a really great place to eat. The pricing is great, considering the generous serving size and the quality of the food. They have a make your own stir fry option for $10 that includes your choice of protein, starch, 3 veggies and sauce. I tried the sweet basil stir fry with chicken, rice noodles, waster chestnuts, broccoli, and corn. The basil was too strong for my liking so I ended up sticking with the familiar and getting the sesame chicken instead which was just what these taste buds wanted.
