I am a carb enthusiast so of course I had to try a real Montreal bagel. As an American who has…read moreaccess to good New York style bagels, I was unfortunately not impressed. Like it's a good bagel, but nothing I was super excited about. I did love the amount of sesame seeds on this thing, being able to see the bagels coming right out of the oven, and the service. But the biggest highlight of my visit was seeing how many options for cream cheese and toppings there were inside for purchase. Like so many cream cheeses it was beautiful. We got a garlic and chive one and it was soooo good, def carried the bagel.

Jamie W and I didn't waste any time trying this one. It was a bus ride away from our hotel, and we were anticipating a long line when we arrived in the morning. Surprisingly there was a queue but not for Fairmount. It was for the obviously popular gnocchi next door at Drogheria Fine. Lucky for us we walked right in and didn't really have a chance to think about our order. The no-nonsense order takers were not up for chit-chat, so we impulsively decided on two C$1.40 Sesame and one C$1.50 Cinnamon & Raisin (Photo 8) plus a couple of C$0.80 mini-packets of Philadelphia cream cheese. There wasn't much to our interaction, so we took our haul across Boulevard Saint-Laurent to Parc Saint-Michel where we found an open picnic table. We immediately noticed how much softer they were than the ones we were used to. They were also a bit smaller which we didn't mind at all. The sesame bagels were nicely aerated, and the cinnamon and raisin one had a sweetness beyond the raisins. It turned out the cream cheese was somewhat superfluous, even though we ordered it more out of habit. As it turned out, we did end up trying a bagel from St-Viateur later that day, and I'm here to report that we are Team Fairmount. There wasn't a huge difference between the two, and St-Viateur has the advantage of showing how they make their bagels, but flavorwise, Fairmount has the slight edge. If you're preference leans towards less carbs, more flavor, welcome to the Montreal Bagel Lovers - NYC Chapter. Fairmont was the most pleasant mistake I've made recently. I thought the line was for gnocchi but instead I ended up with the best bagels I've had in years. The bagels are fresh and packed with flavor. The Pina Colada bagel is life changing. The wait is well worth it and I highly recommend that Fairmont be your first stop in Montreal during your visit.

I ordered the smoked salmon with fig jam on an everything bagel, and it was incredible. The bagel was perfectly fresh, with a chewy interior and just the right amount of crispness on the outside. Combined with the smoked salmon and the sweetness of the fig jam, it was one of the best bagel sandwiches I've ever had. I rarely say this, but it was 100% worth the wait. My only disappointment is that I didn't have enough time to try their famous competitor so I could compare the two. I guess that just gives me another reason to come back to Montreal!

I looked at Mom and Dad. We left. But Mom does not give up easily when carbohydrates are involved, so we returned on Friday and successfully secured a table on the street patio. Much better. The patio is right out front and turned out to be an excellent place for me to sit with Mom and watch Mile End go by. You go inside to order and pay first, then they bring everything out to your table. Very convenient because when you're finished, you can simply get up and continue your adventures. Mom ordered the Traditional bagel with smoked salmon, cream cheese, tomato, onion and capers. It also arrived with two tiny slices of melon, which I assume constitutes dessert in the bagel industry. Dad ordered two plain bagels with butter. Please study the accompanying photograph carefully. You will see Dad actively eating a bagel while I sit approximately 18 inches away staring directly at the table. This was not an accidental composition. This was a cry for help. Mom had an iced coffee and Dad had a Diet Coke. The humans agreed the bagels were worth coming back for, and I have to admit the entire operation is pretty fun -- busy, casual and very Montreal. From a dog perspective, the outdoor patio works well and I was perfectly happy hanging out with the humans. However, no water bowl was offered during our visit. Dogba's verdict: 3 paws out of 5. If I was to judge the two competitive shops on optics and friendliness, St-Viateur would win hands down. The moment we opened the front door, we were dumbstruck by the sea of freshly baked bagels laid out to be picked up by the cashier. Behind the bagels, a couple of the more seasoned staff were taking bagels out of the huge brick oven (Photo 5). None of that was visible at Fairmount nor was a smile. Here the cashier was really friendly. He also happily accepted a credit card for payment. In a way, it wasn't a fair fight because we bought three bagels at Fairmount and had room for just one from here. Some of the ones I got were still warm in the paper bag I received....and many of these bagels are only about $1.50 CDN. What a steal. I got a few flavors, Everything, Cinnamon Raisin and Blueberry. Check out their factory and get some bagels to go.....they sell cream cheese and other spreads on site.

Unlike most bakeries I visited, Boulangerie Guillaume has a much more modern look, and is larger than a standard bakery. Walking in, I was immediately greeted by stairs which led up to the main production area. All of the bakes were arranged on the back-wall perimeter of the space separated from the pedestrians by a glass wall. The color scheme was mostly black to contrast the bright yellow of the bags and signage. The arrangement of the bakes, combined with the color scheme and modern aesthetics, resulted in a stunning, visually striking presentation. I wasn't too hungry, but I can always go for some sweets and their date square looked good. I went with that, along with a cappuccino. The square was delicious - the dates were high quality, and the crust underneath was moist while maintaining its integrity. The cappuccino was also good, a great complement to the bake. Service was efficient, and overall I had a great experience at Boulangerie Guillaume. I definitely want to return to explore more of their menu - I noticed they had some savory items so perhaps for some lunch. Definitely one of the best bakeries I visited in Montreal.

With large picture windows, seating, and bagel production able to be watched, it ended up to be a good choice. Chose Kettlemans Pumpernickel Bagel with Light Cream Cheese, a Cinnamon Puff, and a Coffee. The friendly attendant provided a pager while he prepared my baked goods. Kettlemans house coffees happen to be Lavazza, so selected the Dark Roast option. The great, super fresh Bagel also was half coated in Sesame. All was perfectly delicious at Kettlemans - plus sitting there enabled me to see one of their bakers rolling bagels, people watch, and charge my phone! Noted they had other enticing specialty treats that, had I not been on vacation with a full agenda, would have tried. Might consider next time trying their Sesame Bagel Dog! Definitely would recommend checking out this Kettlemans!

The guy running the cashier is a racist. Here's the low down, as a university kid, bagel etc seemed like a good choice for a quick brunch, oh how I was so mistaken. The food in comparison to that of a dining hall is barely above average. It wasn't particularly busy at the time, yet the waiter stopped by once every 20 minutes, so me not wanting to be rude, I sat there and waited well over 30 minutes just to order. My smoked salmon Benny came out rather quick, which is really the only good thing about this shitty establishment. I devoured the mediocre dish almost immediately as I was starving, then proceeded to wait another 20 minutes before I was told that I had to go up to the counter to pay. Here's where it gets really good. As an Asian man, born in Canada, I speak perfect English, so being polite, I tried to small talk with the angry balding dude, asking how it was going and such. He doesn't even answer my banter, instead telling me the price of my Benny in an exaggeratedly slow way. I pull out my credit card and he puts his hand up, again telling me slowly that he only takes cash. At this point I just wanna leave, I hand him a $20 bill and be hands me back $2. There is no fucking way that this garbage of an experience costed me $18, when the Benny was listed as $14, so I just let him take a tip, it was fine. Whatever I just wanted to leave. But then he says, "leave a tip with me, or on the table." At this point I'm like, I already have him a $4 tip. I'm fucking Audi 3000. So I left. But the nightmare didn't end there. This angry bald man ran outside after not seeing another tip, and yelled down the entire block, "you fucking chinc! You don't leave a tip! Don't ever come back here!" And to this day I've followed his instructions, and have never gone back. The level of ignorance and disgust this man exhibits is just astronomical. All I wanted was good food, but I ended up paying $18 for shit food, shit service, and to be called a racial slur. There are at least half a dozen places within a 3 block radius of bagel etc that have much better service and food. Don't eat here. read more

Best Bagel and smoked salmon(lox) and cream cheese we ever ate. It came with sliced red onion and sliced cucumber, and tomato sliced so thin, which is perfect on the sandwich, it also came with potatoes seared with some onion. This sandwich was so so good. Coffee was great. Such a cool place. Cant say enough great things about this eatery. Great ambiance, very cool decor. Simon the proprietor of the Bagel Etc is such a nice guy, he made us feel real comfortable with his warm personality. The staff is real nice and friendly. Great place. My girlfriend and I had a real nice time here. Bagel sandwich was so good with lox and cream cheese, plus cucumbers,tomatoes and sliced red onion. The potatoes were so good. Coffee was superb. Love the decor in the store. Very cool. Simon the owner is such a friendly nice guy made us feel very welcomed. The waitress kat was real nice also. Saturday morning in Montreal began with something called an Adventure Walk. Or so I thought. Next stop: Maman in Griffintown. Mom already knew Maman because apparently they have one back home on the Upper East Side. Yet somehow, despite living on the Upper East Side myself, I have never been taken there. Interesting. We will address this upon our return to New York. The Griffintown location has a really nice outdoor seating area running alongside the building, with blue café tables, big wooden pergolas and planters. Under normal circumstances, this would have been perfect for me. Unfortunately, it was raining. The staff very kindly told Mom and Dad that I could come inside as long as I remained in my carrier. Terms accepted. After an entire morning of adventuring, I had absolutely no objection to being carried around like important cargo. Mom ordered eggs Benedict and an iced latte. Dad went with scrambled eggs, bacon and toast plus a Diet Coke. I stayed tucked inside my carrier and monitored the bacon situation. Very closely. No further comment at this time. The humans declared brunch a success, and I appreciated having a warm, dry place to recover after my morning excursion instead of sitting outside contemplating my life choices in the rain. Dogba's verdict: 3 paws out of 5. we managed to squeeze in one more brunch on our last day, making our way to maman in griffintown…read more walking in felt like stepping into a little rustic farmhouse tucked into the city, exposed brick, weathered wood, whitewashed furniture, vintage blue and white plates, hanging greenery and a beautiful tree like arrangement covered in delicate blooms. every corner had a story, with little details that made the space feel warm, inviting and effortlessly charming. we were a party of three and arrived around 11:00 am. before the food arrived, i couldn't resist trying one more fun drink before leaving montreal, the peach pie iced matcha latte with vanilla cloud. it was such a pretty seasonal creation, with fruity peach notes layered with creamy matcha and topped with a soft vanilla cloud. refreshing, a little indulgent and the perfect drink to sip while settling into our final brunch of the trip. for my meal, i ordered the eggs ratatouille, stewed eggplant, squash, peppers and tomatoes topped with two over easy eggs, herbed feta and served with toasted country bread. the dish was colourful, comforting and full of fresh flavours. the slow cooked vegetables gave it a homey feel, while the runny yolks and herbed feta added just the right amount of richness. it felt like the perfect brunch after days of exploring, satisfying and flavourful, but still light enough to leave me feeling good. the toasted country bread was perfect for scooping up every last bit of the vegetable mixture and egg yolk. but what made this brunch special wasn't just the food or the beautiful setting. it was the chance to slow down and take in everything we had experienced over the whirlwind trip, the neighbourhood walks, incredible meals, rainy adventures, festival memories and all the unexpected little discoveries along the way. we sat, chatted and laughed, replaying our favourite moments and realizing just how much we had packed into a few short days. our server was friendly and never rushed us, allowing us to enjoy those final conversations before heading home. there was something cinematic about that last morning, sunlight filtering through the windows, flowers blooming indoors, plates arriving at the table, and three friends taking a quiet moment to appreciate the adventure before it came to an end. a beautiful space, a memorable meal, great company and one final chapter to close out our montreal adventure. au revoir montreal...until we meet again.

I only finished my omelet because I'm pregnant and needed some food in my body. I got the cathedral omelet which when it came looked so sad. The eggs were not fluffy at all and it was brownish. The prosciutto was just on top of it instead of on the inside. The potatoes were cold and had way too much seasoning on it I couldn't even eat one. Maybe I just ordered the wrong thing, or maybe all the food tastes bad?
