All I'm saying is... Canada bagels CANNOT compete with NJ/NY bagels. Coming to Montreal, you heard that this is one of the spots you MUST try. So try I did... and disappointed I was. Ordered a scallion bagel with cream cheese and I got a bagel cupcake???? Bagel = cupcake, cream cheese = frosting. Bagel was okay. Nothing crazy that made it a must try. If you are on the search for real bagels.... Pull up to NY or NJ. Service was quick. Shop was crowded and rowdy.

Had a sesame bagel with plain cream cheese. The bagel was really good, though I wish the sesames were better toasted. But it did take 15 minutes for them to bring out my one bagel. For the cost and wait i probably would prefer somewhere else. Nice and clean inside, small seating area.

When planning my trip to Montreal, I was somewhat surprised to find out that the city was well-known for their bagels. As a native New Yorker, I have strong opinions on bagels - I may be biased but I think we have some of the best bagels out there. That being said though, I wanted to see what the hype was all about - and since Fairmount was one of the more well-known bagelrys in the city, I made plans to visit. The main differences between a Montreal and NYC bagel are that the former are thinner and denser, with a larger hole in the middle. They are also slightly sweeter as they use sugar in their dough. I learned that two of the most famous spots for bagels in the city were St-Viateur and Fairmount, so I wanted to see how both compared to each other. As I approached, I was greeted with a line - but it wasn't too long and before I knew it I was placing my order. The space is small, there's really no room inside to do anything except place your order. There's a semi-open production area behind the counter with the walls lined up with bagels and spreads. I found it odd that none of it was able to be taken off the shelf, so you need to ask. I decided to get a plain and a garlic bagel. They were fine - too dense for my taste and lacking the chewiness I love in bagels (I get that's a NY thing). It's interesting because I enjoyed the bagels at St-Viateur, but the ones here at Fairmount didn't do it for me. I would be open to giving them another try, but for now I feel there are better bagel spots in the city.

Montreal-style bagels are sweeter and harder than a NY-style bagel. They're also smaller. They are not my preferred bagel, but definitely fun to try! The everything bagel was my favourite. The all-dressed bagel had an overpowering fennel taste. Bring cash or debit. The line moves quick. They don't toast or spread cream cheese for you.

I haven't eaten here....YET. But just look at the Apple Maps description of the place: "...Fairmount is the only one to have been authorized by NASA to go into space. ..." I would go here just because of the description. This place seems like they know what they are doing. And ask about the "Bagel Toss" that they do. Go on. Enjo

Bagels are not worth a 1 hour wait. CASH OR CANADIAN DEBIT! If you're eating them within the hour they're decent but not life changing. NYC bagels are definitely more of my style. I got several dozen bagels of almost every kind and even got the bagel sandwich with lox and cream cheese. Nothing stood out as amazing.

Came noon on a weekday. 4 minute wait to order. Lots of people waiting inside but most have already ordered and are waiting with their tickets to be called to pick up their order from the same counter as you order from. Would love if the pickup counter was seperate. Cream cheese available and they just spread it on-top. If you get cream cheese you get your bagel in a plastic container which is super wasteful but also keeps the cream cheese safe. Bagel was delicious and even more so with the cream cheese. Lots of benches in the area to sit and eat. 2 bagels with cream cheese $11.

Solid bagels! Go for the sesame. I went in the afternoon so there was no line and it made it totally worth it.

Delicious Bagels! I've wanted to try the famous Montreal Bagels for quite a while. And I'm so glad I did. This is a very small bagel shop, but everything is made fresh all day long. So, don't overthink it here. Just order a bag of bagels and get out of the shop. The bagels are really flavorful with a nice chew. The Blueberry Bagel has lots of real blueberries, and they will stain your clothes if you're not careful. The "All Dressed" bagel is coated with all the seeds and salt your palette desires. The service is quick and, because of the volume they serve each day, some of your bagels will likely be fresh out of the oven and warm. That's a good thing. Do yourself a favor and grab some Fairmount Bagels whenever you can.

I know everyone compares Montreal bagels to NY and NJ bagels but they are 2 different foods in my opinion. These are made in the same fashion as NYC bagels but much thinner and a tad sweet as they boil them in water with honey. These Montreal way is to eat the traditional sesame bagel hot out of the oven in a bag with nothing on it. This is similar to how you would eat a pretzel. They are very good and definitely crave worthy. Fairmount in my opinion is the best of the "famous" Montreal bagel joints. You can't eat here as it's only take out and often the line runs out the door and down the block so prepare for a wait.

Slightly disappointed with this bagel spot. Although you get your bagels fairly quickly (even when there is a long line), and the price is very good, they don't give you your bagels warm. We got the all dressed bagel and the garlic one (burnt garlic flavor), herbs spread and lox. I get the concept of making it yourself but at least serve it warm? I liked the size of them though. Perfect for me to be able to eat one full bagel by myself.

We heard Montreal is known for their bagels, so we stopped by on a Tuesday morning on our way out of the city. There's street parking in the area and no tables/seating here. We tried a few different flavors: Blueberry, Cranberry, Sesame, and Sun Dried Tomato. The sesame bagels were freshly made and so good. The blueberry and cranberry were okay and wasn't a fan of the sun dried tomato. The bagels do not come with cream cheese, but they sell Philadelphia Cream Cheese in the tub.

Another recommended spot upon others learning of my forthcoming trip to Montreal. Although I am not a huge fan of Montreal bagels - New York is more my preferred style - I really liked Fairmount! Chewy, flavourful, and fresh. I had a plain and blueberry, which was not too sweet. I also had a pretzel which was HUGE and chewy and had just the right amount of salt. Prices are quite reasonable, but you need either cash or Canadian debit (with a minimum spend amount).

To be honest, I didn't think there would be any sort of difference, but I was wrong. Montreal style bagels seem more dense. And while you would think that the higher density would make it less tasty, you would be wrong. These bagels were on par with their new york counterparts, and I dare say their "all dressed" (everything) seasoning/toppings are better than the "everything" ones in the US. I can only imagine how crazy this place gets on the weekends, and in the summer. Thankfully, we went on a Monday in March, so there were only a handful of people in front of us. We got a half dozen of the all dressed, and they gave us both a brown paper bag, and a plastic bag (in case we wanted to freeze them for later). We saw people at our hotel with bags and bags of bagels, so clearly, this is a thing people do. OVERALL - gimme some more! Sadly, I'm not aware of any place around me that sells these bad boys. Great smoked meat sandwich!…read more Honestly my first thought was to compare this sandwich to the many pastrami sandwiches I've had in NYC but that would be comparing apples to oranges. Even Schwartz will tell you it's not the same product although it is very similar. Both institutions cure, spice, smoke and steam the meat but that's where the similarities end. Although I don't know for sure, I've heard the cut of meat is different. Katz uses a naval cut, which is noticeably fattier and juicy. Schwartz's smoked meat doesn't lack in fattiness but it's far less fatty and juicy. Another fact on the first bite is -the flavor. Katz's flavor profile on the pastrami is a knockout punch while Schwartz delivers a jab. Schwartz's smoked meat delivers a different flavor profile all together. That's not to say Schwartz isn't great because it's half the price on Katz essentially and you don't have to tip your slicer here. That's not to say Schwartz doesn't bring their own brand of chaos. On my way out the slicer shouted he'd serve no one until the line was straightened out to his liking. LOL. It's all good though, that line was a mess and Sometimes tourists need a stern talking to. I'd get in a straight line for sure for this sandwich! I got my sandwich from the takeout next door versus waiting for table service. The line was 20 deep at 3pm and I just didn't have the patience on a drizzling afternoon. I'd revisit for another one of these smoked meat sandwiches.

I gotta say, it was a bit of a trek to get here. My wife dropped me off and drove around while I went to get my order. Let me just say, going at 10pm on a Monday night probably played in my favor. Still being that late on a Monday in March, this place was still busy. I could have gotten a table if I was dining in, but that was not my plan. I ran in to grab some take out, and I have to say, in the time it took me to turn around and pay for my sandwich, my sandwich was all ready to go. The anticipation built as we drove back to hotel with my smoked meat sandwich. When I opened it up, I can't say I was overwhelmed by the size of it, but after that first bite, I was hooked. This was the best bite I had on my whole trip, and I am now cursing myself for only getting one sandwich. We almost went back the next morning, but we had to be on the road, so alas, this one sandwich was all we got. OVERALL - if you don't go, it is truly your loss. So, what is a Montreal bagel and how is it different from any other bagel? Well, they are smaller, thinner, denser, and sweeter, with a larger hole in the middle than most other bagels. Back in the day, they were always baked in a wood-burning oven. Today, those types of ovens are illegal, so they engaged a team of bagel production experts to reconfigure a cooking process and replicate the test and texture of their old-school wood fire baked ancestors. And their bagels can be enjoyed in eighteen different varieties, and that is a pretty awesome selection. We decided on an Everything Bagel with jalapeno cream cheese (C$5.25) and a Plain bagel with salmon cream cheese (C$5.25). Our drinks were a Small Americano (C$3.50) and a small drip coffee (C$2.75). My Everything bagel was wonderful. Chewy on the outside, soft on the inside, with a subtle "hint of sweetness" taste. It was everything you'd ever want in a bagel. And the jalapeno cream cheese was great. I order this a lot and sometimes I end up with a dissapointingly bland cream cheese with the lightest green tint to it, as though someone used an eye dropper to administer a few milligrams of pickle juice. But not here, there were actual hunks of raw jalapeno in the cream cheese that left no doubt in your mind what you were eating. They sure delivered the old zip I expect in anything with the word "jalapeno" in its description. You order on their assembly line (the servers were great), then grab a table out in the common area outside the store. PRO TIP The store can be tricky to find. It's inside an office building on a lower level which resembles a shopping mall. What a great thing for the office workers to grab some food without confronting the harsh Montreal winter weather.

Unlike most bakeries I visited, Boulangerie Guillaume has a much more modern look, and is larger than a standard bakery. Walking in, I was immediately greeted by stairs which led up to the main production area. All of the bakes were arranged on the back-wall perimeter of the space separated from the pedestrians by a glass wall. The color scheme was mostly black to contrast the bright yellow of the bags and signage. The arrangement of the bakes, combined with the color scheme and modern aesthetics, resulted in a stunning, visually striking presentation. I wasn't too hungry, but I can always go for some sweets and their date square looked good. I went with that, along with a cappuccino. The square was delicious - the dates were high quality, and the crust underneath was moist while maintaining its integrity. The cappuccino was also good, a great complement to the bake. Service was efficient, and overall I had a great experience at Boulangerie Guillaume. I definitely want to return to explore more of their menu - I noticed they had some savory items so perhaps for some lunch. Definitely one of the best bakeries I visited in Montreal.
