Our Home Warranty program provided us with Backyard Pool and Spa for servicing a water leak by the pump motor. I called as soon as I heard who would be servicing us and left a message because it was after hours. The next morning, I got a follow-up call from Liana. She told me that the boss, Jack, would coming out, and gave me a possible time window. I later spoke with Jack and we figured out possibilities. We spoke the morning of service, and he confirmed the time. He called when he was on his way with an exact ETA. Arrived exactly when he said. He and Zahan, the tech, came to the pool and assessed the situation in seconds. As Zahan disassembled the pump, Jack explained best case to worst case scenarios. When it was disassembled, Jack quickly left to get parts. Zahan showed me the problem. Jack came back and explained everything and possible problems that could arise from the way the pipes were run. BEWARE: Lazy and disrespectful. HIGHLY DO NOT RECOMMEND IT!!!!!!!!!!! Technician: ZACH This company came out because of a warranty review. initially, he diagnosed the issue and verbally told me that the heater and pool pump were not working. For the pump, he explained that the bearings and the pump itself were leaking. in regards to the heater, he never told me why it was not working other than it's "old". Turns out he submitted his opinion to the warranty company but failed to communicate that he concluded that it was due to pest issues. The warranty denied the claim and only replaced the pool pump. A couple of days later the same guy returns with attitude and even gets more disrespectful when he is confronted with the lack of communication on why the heater was not working. It was clear that he was cutting corners to do minimal work. I understand that the heater is old but when he reports that the heater is not working because it has been destroyed by the wiring yet he VERBALLY agrees that the "wiring works fine" it just seems like it was easier for him to report damage because of pest versus wear and tear and having to replace the entire system. This company just chased a huge headache because they were lazy. I have attached pictures as proof that the wires are in tack...yes fibers are missing but it is very obvious that the wires are not chewed..you are unable to see metal. I will update this review once I have a 3rd party tech fix the issue. The warranty company was trying to contact him on-site and I literally had to go outside and let him know and all he said was "OK." He ignored the calls. The warranty company was trying to investigate why he had told me that the problem is not due to pest it is due to wear and tear but since he reported that it was due to pest he is "unable to change it." This now results in me having to pay for a second opinion and a third-party pool repair company to counteract his diagnosis. I seriously do not recommend this company at all because of how they behave it is seriously was not called for and I am deeply saddened to even write this review but it's the truth. I was very nice to him very respectful and in return, he gave me the complete opposite. Zach needs to improve and become kinder and stop lying and cutting corners. Jack was great! I had a Pentair Mastertemp heater that was not working. I originally asked my pool service company to see if they could diagnose and fix. They told me that the manifold bypass valve was broken and that a piece of the valve was stuck in the pipe. Luckily they were able to retrieve. They did not do any further diagnostics or trouble shooting. They said it could be any number of things and they could try to fix, but probably wasn't worth fixing since the heater was 10 years old. They insisted it was better to rebuild or replace it. Rebuild would be $3,000 and replace would be $5,000. I called Jack as a last chance effort and was willing to pay $150 before shelling out $3,000 to $5,000. He came at 6:30AM to accommodate my schedule. He diagnosed the problem in less than 10 minutes!!! It was a bad control module and touch pad. He charged me $350 and it was fixed. Jack also gave me some tips to make sure my pool equipment lasts longer. I feel like my pool service company was just trying to make money off of me for a new heater install. I highly recommend calling Jack to diagnose and fix your pool equipment before replacing! read more

This is a very honest comment; we have used Backyard Pools several times thru our homeowners insurance, the employee's come an really do very little, they aren't able to ever solve our pool problems; just make suggestions and do little and charge a lot. Recently, the guy came for service, I was unable to get my salt level down, after draining the pool 3/4's twice... I felt like I needed my system reset, this guy said drain it again.... Second opinion it was the salt system... I bought it and I changed it my self, ran it a week an everything back to normal.... Backyard pools charged me $150, 2 or 3 times, didn't know nothing and I had to fill my pool 2 times 20,000+ gallons, fined by the water co. an a water bill like $800 each time we lost more, called the owner of Backyard Pools to complain and he said " Service Calls are $150 and if I want his guy to come back it's $150, this guy n these guys should try to do whatever they could to satisfy us, to finish the job yet told crappy shit! I am having to deal with Backyard Pool & Spa repair through an American Home Shield service request. I have issues with both my heater and chlorine generator. Backyard Pool & Spa came for a first visit. A part was replaced on the heater. The salt cell was replaced. At the time, the salt level was too high. Salt could be seen visibly in the pool. Pool would need to be drained and refilled in order to restore salt to proper level. Everything seemed fine. When it was time to use the heater, it would not turn on. With their new inspection, I was told that it's an old heater and that it will not turn on unless running pump at a higher RPM. No repair done. Can you imagine being told that the heater in your car won't turn on unless running engine at a higher RPM? Plus, having to run at higher RPM significantly increase electricity usage. The heater doesn't work like it should and needs to be repaired or replaced. The chlorine generator registered a lower number over time. My pool guys recommended draining the pool, refilling, and getting the salt at the right level, since we know that needed to be done anyway. After doing so, manually testing read 3000. For Backyard Pool and Spa, it read 1900. Whichever of those two is right, the chlorine generator reads 1100, which is not even close to either number. Something is broken and needs to be repaired or replaced. American Home Shield will not cover any of this. According to them, this is a filter problem that requires a cleaning. The filter should be cleaned roughly every 6 months. It was last cleaned in April, which means only two months from when Backyard Pool & Spa came out the second time. The filter is currently reading 20 PSI, so that shouldn't be an issue. If the filter really is the problem, prove it by cleaning it and charging me for it. In the meantime, I'm been without a working pool heater and chlorine generator for a few months now. read more

If you're calling them directly and not going through home warranty then you might have better luck. I am one of the unfortunate souls that had to go through home warranty for a non functioning pool heater. The thing is obviously broken. Zack came out and spent 15 min, took some photos and collected my $75 for the call and went on his merry way. He told me he would tell the insurance company that he recommends replacing the unit. But he must've told them a different story because they denied my claim. Wtf?! I then called home warranty and told them my home inspection (when I was buying my house) even recommended we replace the unit. So now they're sending out a second contractor for a second opinion because clearly, Backyard Pools can't do the job right. Perhaps the only way they make money is by contracting with home warranty companies. I highly recommend Backyard Pool. Jack the owner actually returns phone calls. They repaired my pool at my old house after Upland Pool and Unified Pool failed to make the approved repairs. They did not even bother to return my phone calls or the calls of AHS. Backyard Pool not only repaired the pool at my old house but also repaired the pool at my new house. They were able to get First American warranty to pay for the repairs. Backyard Pool really made First American look good.
