Local favorite for many years and we send people from our B&B there virtually every weekend. My only complaints - and they are small ones - is the chicken-fried steak can be a little tough sometimes and after so many years as a customer, I sure wish they'd change the menu some. Just a great spot, locally-owned, the chef/owner is actually working in the kitchen. It's tucked behind an antique shop off SH-16 just outside of Pipe Creek. The parking area is well-shaded. There is a large outdoor eating area with play area for kids. The menu is great - for example, Aaron's take on bruschetta is fantastic. I had a question about the level of sweetness on the pecan-crusted chicken and Chef Aaron described it. We also ordered the pomodoro pasta with chicken. Service was great too. And it is definitely worth taking an order of dessert to-go. We took a slice of coconut pie and even two days later it was awesome. We carefully planned our trip so that we would arrive before they closed at 2:30--as arriving when they re-open at dinner time would have us driving home in the dark. More lunch-type selections on the menu would have met our expectations. (Due to the layout of the website, we had difficulties locating the menu selections for the day that we planned to arrive.) However, my shrimp omelet was great. My friend had the buttermilk fried chicken--since there was no chicken fried steak on the menu. Great atmosphere...Very restful...and appropriate for conversation while eating. We do suggest a redesign of the website to make it more user-friendly. read more

I was super impressed by their soup of the day, Carrot Curry and Ginger. Sooooooo delicious. Since I don't live nearby, I'm going to have to try to mimic it at home cus I wanna drink it all day. The shrimp corn dogs were just as amazing, crunchy and flavorful. They were lightly battered and comes with a Thai chili sweet sauce. Great combo. Our entrees were good but didn't wow us as much as the starters. I was happy they offered a vegetable dish, so that I had room to try an extraordinary homemade ice cream. I really wanted the wildflower honey flavor but only the cinnamon black pepper basil was available. Reluctantly, I ordered it. Happy that I did! That was probably the highlight of my visit. I could not believe the chef was able to blend cinnamon, black pepper, and fresh bits of basil into this amazing treat. Today was perfect! I took my neighbors out for a drive and to lunch. I have been several times but this was their first and they were very impressed with my selection. We all had something different and everyone raved about his/her own dish. I had blackened flounder that was very moist and not too spicy. One friend had the Hamburger special, one had the chicken fried steak and another Chicken tenders. And, we finished it off with two different chocolate cakes to split between the 4 of us. The atmosphere is wonderful! Laid back, perfect place to eat outside, cutest little restaurant. Super fun play space outside for kids, our 2 & 4 year olds loved it. Food was pretty good overall--maybe just lacking a bit of seasoning on the meats. The house salad dressing is absolutely delicious, the bread was wonderful, the pecan chicken was perfectly cooked. Coconut cake was a bit dry overall, and the creme brûlée was tasty but the sugar was just a bit over the toasted stage & was a bit burnt. All in all a great fun meal. read more

This place is a no for me. The place itself is super cute and quaint but the food is not the best. The crab cakes Benedict was very fishy and not the best. The potatoes were mediocre. This place has a lot of potential but needs to work a little harder at paying attention to detail. My husband ordered the same thing as i did but got a salad instead of his potatoes who in their right mind eats salad for breakfast?!!???? We went for brunch. The location is cute. The restaurant cannot be seen from the street. It's behind an antique store and surrounded by gardens. You can see chickens roaming the grounds and I heard a pot bellied pig although it escaped our sights. The server was nice but since it was an hour before closing, we felt a little rushed. The food was good but nothing special for brunch. The biscuits were a bit hard and dense and the steak was a bit tough. The shrimp corn dogs as appetizers were interesting and tasty. We really wanted some dessert but they had sold out of everything! It really makes us wonder what we missed out on. One of the best restaurants in the area and located in a cute building near the Antique store. In Bandera you kind of have to get used to fair to middling food but Backyard Bistro stands out as a really good restaurant with great food. I usually get the vegetable crepe, which comes in a delicious (I think) bechamel sauce. The Pecan Crusted Chicken is excellent and the carrot cake is amazing. You can sit out in the little garden and watch the pig that comes to the fence on the adjacent property. It's a hidden gem, but all the locals know where it is. read more

The moment we walked in, we were greeted by a smiling hostess and we were sat very quickly. The menu was filled with many Farm to Table items that all sounded delicious. The Chicken Rollete, stuffed with truffles with a side of fabulous homemade mashed potatoes was phenomenal. It was tender and wonderfully flavored. My sons decided to split Aaron's Chicken Fried Steak and wee not disappointed. The portion was huge and even though they split it, it was wonderfully plated separately. Being that there is an antique shop connected with the restaurant, the ambiance is quaint and cottagey. The stars of our evening were Wilbur and Templeton; two handsome and well behaved pot-belly pigs that live on the farm part of the property that got the pleasure of meeting.
