They don't serve alcohol, but they happily let you bring in drinks from next door, our Bloody Marias were a great start to the morning. The food was outstanding. I did some researches on where to eat in Bandera. I found some good options which are more modern. I wanted to eat somewhere historical. I settled to try this place. We walk in and there were at least 3 waiters around looking at us confused if we should order at the counter seeing a line there or just seat ourselves. We finally decided to flag a waitress and ask her. As friendly as people are in this town it was not the case at this restaurant. The lady was short with her answers and almost felt like she is mocking our questions. I saw that the must try is the Texas Spud which seems to be a loaded baked potato. In general from what I know baked potatoes might include bacon and my friend doesn't eat bacon. The way she answered about it was such a turn off! We were about to have a full mean ended up opting to just try the Texas Spud and a side of onion rings since she recommended that The onion rings are old and inedible we left them. The Texas Spud when it came to the table I ended up having a full understanding of it by eating it. So basically it is a baked potato with chili on it (no meat) it feels it came from a can and cheese pickled jalapeño and sour cream decorated with tortilla chips around it. It was ok but I could say I have tried it. The restaurant itself is very old. I believe it is the oldest running restaurant in Bandera I got to see The John Wayne Room which is western-themed dining room. Decorated with memorabilia dedicated to "The Duke". Also they have a salad bar that looks like a wagon. Just take a picture of it from far away the veggies and everything in it looks very sad! Will I return to eat there? Definitely not! This is a split review. I ordered a medium-rare ribeye. The chef delivered it on a hot platter that cooked the steak to well-done. The server offered me steak sauce. I told her "I hope not". Old fashion country diner. The decor will transport you back in time. It appears to be a local favorite and a tourist must eat. Salad bar set up inside an old wagon carriage. The building alone is from the 1800's. Service is fast and super friendly make you feel at home even if your just passing through. Was here for lunch on two occasions during the bike rally. Big place, so even with all the folks waiting it didnt take long to get a table. Theres a lot on the menu & both items I had were delicious. I went with the Monterey chicken the first time which was really good & I loved the beans that came with it. Service here is absolutely 5 star as getting seated, ordering & getting your food is really fast, but you never feel hurried. Cowboy town rules. Service and atmosphere: This restaurant was established 104 years ago! It's the iconic spot in the most American cowboy town in the Great State of Texas. This restaurant is also famous for John Wayne memorabilia. The service was fast and very friendly. Food and drinks: Good selection of comfort foods with a touch of good old home cooking. This is the oldest operating restaurant in Bandera. Since 1921 I believe. Its name is short for "Old Spanish Trail". We stopped in after checking out some antique stores and had a very good meal. It has a varied menu so you should be able to find what you want. The staff is very friendly and their service is prompt. One thing to remember is that they don't serve alcohol. But they serve breakfast all day! Of course, I had to try the Chicken Fried Steak, which is called "The Cowboy Breakfast". For some reason I always seem to be on a quest for the best Chicken Fried Steaks in Texas. I have to say it was near the top of my list. The steak was seasoned well and wasn't over-cooked. The breading was fried to perfection and when topped off with that tasty country gravy...it was on. I have to say that the only lowlight was the Lemon Meringue pie. It didn't have a solid lemon zest to it and was pretty bland. Unfortunately, it had an off putting after taste. Hopefully it was just a one off. Regardless, definitely give this Bandera institution a try when in town. read more

Sooooo good!the hubs got the Duke CFS and the middle kiddo got the middle one. They were huge! We did the loaded fries with chili and bacon on the side (I'm vegetarian) and the youngest had the waffle. Everybody enjoyed everything! It was chilly due to the a/c and the restrooms had very attractive photos :). Fairly inexpensive for what we ordered. If you order sweet tea...get ready for some diabetes. My daughter, my friend and I ate breakfast at OST Restaurant. My friend & I ordered the pancake breakfast consisting of a Texas size pancake, 2 strips of bacon & 2 eggs any style.. The breakfast was delicious. My daughter ordered the chorizo & eggs breakfast Enchiladas. She said it was tasty. Our waitress was very attentive and everything & the ambiance in the restaurant was great. We also saw the cowboy gun fight which is displayed twice on Saturdays. Stopped in around 11 am on Saturday, 25 Oct. FYI, there is a parking lot around the corner on Cedar St and 11th St if you cannot get in the limited parking in front of the restaurant. We stopped in Bandera on our way from Fredericksburg to San Antonio as we wanted to stop for lunch in a cute town. We opted to eat the Wednesday special which was fried chicken as was delicious. I checked out OST while on vacation. Such a great diner! Walking in you immediately notice all the fun decorations. Very old west vibes, like a cowboy is gonna burst through the doors any second! The service is great. Our server was on top of everything, even though it was a bit busy. She was very friendly and made our experience personable. It was a day trip to Bandera, TX. I had asked on the San Antonio Restaurant Facebook Page, where folks recommended to stop for lunch. Most recommended O.S.T. (Old Spanish Trail) Restaurant. It's the longest operating restaurant in Bandera County, having started in 1921. Dad had pink lemonade and the Old Fashioned Breakfast with 2 eggs, a slice of ham, hash brown, and toast. Hubby and I both had coffee and shared The Duke Chicken Fried Steak with mashed potatoes, toast, and a trip to the salad bar. The CFS was a little chewy, but the gravy was good. The mashed potatoes were really good. We had wanted to try the Bluebberry Buttermilk Pie, but they didn't have any, so we tried the Chocolate Meringue Pie. I was hoping the chocolate part was more like mousse, and this one was more pudding-like. The meringue was perfect. The John Wayne Room was impressive, and I had Dad take a photo with The Duke. We visited both the original courthouse and the current courthouse. Bandera is the Cowboy Capital of the World. Sure enough, we saw folks on horseback across the courthouse. The chicken enchiladas were topped with chili and cheese with fresh chopped green onions. They didn't skimp on the roasted chicken as the couple of bites took me longer to finish. We've been coming to OST for quite some time, and have NEVER had a bad experience until today. The restaurant wasn't crowded at all and we were looking forward to breakfast on our day off. Two customers who came in after us, were served before us.. we sat patiently for over 45 minutes..our waitress made no eye contact nor offered to re-fill our coffees even once, we asked another waitress for re-fills. We were told there was one cook, but honestly, the restaurant was half empty and others were served before us. Our order was basic: eggs & bacon. We finally got up and walked out. What a great place to stop for lunch - full of tourists and locals. Guests seat themselves and no was worried that we might need to flag someone down for help. I worried in vain. The wait staff was keeping a close eye on guests and we had menus and nice tall ice teas in a flash. Lots of great choices on the menu and food was brought quickly. Although the Texas toast and biscuits were bland, the main courses were flavorful and filling. But save room for dessert- the homemade pies looked delicious. We went for breakfast for the first time since the new owners bought the place. The food was hardly edible. My scrambled eggs were not real, they tasted awful. They used to be real so why aren't they now? The hash browns looked browned but they tasted burnt. There were a lot of burnt pieces in them but even digging them out the non-browned potatoes tasted burnt too. The biscuits weren't browned. The waffle was mushy so it was hard to spread butter on it. I drive a lot for work and one of the places that I travel to is Bandera, I had a bit of time to kill and it was lunch time so I stopped at OST. Instant nostalgia from the wood paneling to the salad bar with the baco's. Service is always exceptional and the food is always spot-on. I can't and don't eat a lot of food but I had to have the CFS and it was worth it. Tender, covered with cream gravy and a side of mashed potatoes. Carb me up for the day. It looks just like it did when I was a kid, always clean, always nice, and always a good break in the middle of a long day on the road.
