First of all, those folks need to put some respect on Miguel Jr.'s name, because if you're not already aware - it's a local fast food powerhouse that's poised to take over the nation one day. Any one that knows the level of food served up at Miguel Jr.'s fast food restaurant should believe that their sit down restaurant ain't messing around. I absolutely love it here. I've been at least 10 times. I bring friends from out of town here, I've had a birthday dinner here, and I'll be back again and again. The service is always great and the vibe inside is cool. The main seating area has an outdoor plaza theme that looks like you're sitting in a courtyard below colorful Spanish style buildings. It always gives me Disneyland vibes (sorry should have taken pics). Outdoors with the lake view is nice too, but not in the August heat. Maybe 1 time I've been and the food wasn't too great. But 9/10 times...or maybe more...it's been a 5-star experience - and this was one of them! I came for happy hour before a movie across the way, because they have good prices on appetizers. I don't drink, so I can't speak to that side of the happy hour menu, but I've tried every food item on it. My favorite thing is the queso fundido. If you don't know, it's a melted cheese dish with chorizo on top typically served with tortilla (corn or flour). I love the house made, fresh, flour tortillas here! The queso fundido may look like a dip, but you it's more of a thick mozzarella consistency. You gotta scoop and stretch it on to a tortilla and fold it or roll it. Sure it's a little greasy, but the tortilla helps soak that up. Share it with enough friends and you don't feel as guilty about it! After that I had my house salad which was super solid for only $5. It was simple, but satisfying - especially after my greasy queso. The naked relleno was my third course. Also super solid with great flavor. The chili had a nice char, and sauce/cheese had a nice complimentary flavor. These three items had me pretty filled up, but I also charged my wife the husband tax and stole one of her carnitas tacos. If I wasn't here for happy hour, the carnitas plate is my go-to, so I already knew these were going to be good. The carnitas was plenty juicy with that nice pork flavor. I think the perfect carnitas have some nice crunch without being dry. These didn't have any crunch, but certainly were not dry - and that's a win enough for me. They tasted juicy without having the overwhelming flavor or sensation of being fatty. Trust me, my wife would have said something if they were too fatty. Overall I highly recommend Miguel's to my local folks in the IE and anyone visiting. It's one of my favorite sit down Mexican restaurants in the area and definitely for happy hour. And maybe most importantly, it seems to be maybe one of the more affordable (in comparison), family friendly, and relaxed sit down restaurants to eat at within the Dos Lagos shopping center (anyone feel free to correct me if I'm wrong on that!).

It's a rented commercial kitchen, not a store front or residence. They do not sell here. I am always on the hunt for a really good smoked brisket. Albert's smoked meats are beyond reproach. He is gifted, providing a product that is moist and delicious. The wood he uses for smoking is one I could never get tired of. I ordered brisket meat only, hoping for a few slices, forgoing the bread and sides in an effort to avoid all the carbs. So what I ended up with was only a small tinfoil packet of meat, well chopped. The Hubs ordered a pulled pork sandwich with Cole slaw and baked beans. It came with a small container of their bbq sauce, a very sweet version, on the side. Due to rain, Evans Brewery had graciously opened up their lobby to the Ochoas for setting up their operation. We had expected to bring our food straight home regardless, but there did happen to be a few places we could have plopped ourselves down and ate inside. Once home, we took a good look at what we had spent $42 for. These portions were certainly not intended for anyone who sports a large appetite. Fairly recent pictures of their menu indicated I would be purchasing a half pound of brisket. It was not, more likely around 5 oz. Mr. B's cole slaw and baked beans sides were unremarkable, and sadly, the bbq sauce was overly sweet. This left us with very mixed feelings. While I really loved my brisket meat, and Hubs also said he liked his pulled pork, the smaller servings stunned us, and the sides were unimpressive and meaningless in the scope of things. I figured we were paying close to $60/lb for our meat. I admire the energy and passion they have put into their business. But as nice and friendly as they were, the great tasting meats were not enough to draw us in, and the fact that they are relatively expensive for an informal, seating-less pop-up, left us feeling torn.
