Backwoods French Toast
Marah H.

This little cafe is worth the stop if you find yourself in the Yakima region. We we greeted the moment we talked in and found it to be quite busy for brunch time. Fortunately, they had a table and the wait very brief. I was rather impressed as service was friendly and attentive during our entire visit. I ordered the backwoods French toast and my buddy had the corned beef hash. We both really enjoyed our time here and I would definitely return again the next time I'm driving through.

We will always come here for a breakfast while in town and they're open. We're always warmly greeted, promptly I might add. The food is great, along with good prices. And the table service is spot on. Food comes out quick and hot, and the beverages rarely get to empty.

Skillet breakfast. Have a very large menu choices.

I don't review a business unless It is outstanding good or bad. HANDS DOWN- Best tasting breakfast ever and I am 78 years old. They are only open for part of the day and they are tucked away off of 1st street. What a jewel!

Very busy but the service was great and food was amazing. The pictures on the wall were cool to look at and made you feel like you were in the woods.

Service - so good! The thing that impressed me the most was watching the waitress greet her regulars.... Hugs... more hugs.... Asking how their week was... this is def a place regulars regulate. Ok- onto the food. It took me a while to order because IT ALL SOUNDED AMAZING! Pancakes tasted like vanilla cake. I prefer the classic taste of pancakes but I think people who love vanilla will love these pancakes. Hamburger was great and the fries in the picture (crinkled) were not what I got. I got steak fries but they were really yummy! I got the fry sauce and it was just a classic experience. I had to remove a few onion slices because there were massive amounts of raw onion. They asked if I wanted pickles and I did! They were awesome too! I would order the burger again.... But Next time I come I will do one of their amazing breakfast items.

We needed a place for breakfast for our group of 7 that was in town for wine tasting. Based on the reviews, we wanted to give it a try and glad we did. Small space but well used. Service was wonderful. Our order was taken and although they were busy it didn't take long to get our food. Food was great and pricing reasonable. Parking lot is shared as it's a strip mall. I would recommend giving it a shot as we will be back next time around.

Had an awesome breakfast here! We had a larger group of us and had awesome service! The reviews were what drew me to try Backwoods Cafe, and the other reviews were right- great food and great service! Definitely will be back!

I had them cut it in half and my husband and I split it with a side of fries! We barely even touched the fries and were stuffed! It was a great burger! Lots of fresh veggies, if it were a single patty I don't know that it would have been as good because theyre thin patties, similar to McDonald's. We ate in the car which was a mistake lol. They're pretty messy, a lot of dripping and onions falling out etc- as a good burger should be!!! The regular fries were just like McDonald's though could have used a bit more salt... My diet soda tasted watered down, like the machine needed a refill which is a real bummer, especially when you're spending $5 on a soda. Staff wasnt terribly friendly- kind of felt rushed like I was unconvincing them or something. Thought $36 for a burger, fries, small soda and small shake was a bit much but again, we did split it and were stuffed so guess can't really complain too much.

The restaurant has a spacious sit-down dining area, and the staff was friendly and welcoming throughout our visit. As for the food, the sides were the clear winner. The tater tots were awesome--perfectly crispy on the outside and warm and tender on the inside. The burger is undeniably massive, but unfortunately, the patty itself was on the drier side. Given that it's their signature item, the burger definitely could use some work to match the portion size. Overall, it's a great hangout spot with awesome sides and friendly service, but the main event needs a bit of fine-tuning.

Good call because that group was noisy and we would have had difficulties conversing. My friend had a skinny breakfast with some modifications and I had chicken salad. The orders were correct and very tasty. This former Grant's brew pub and later Russillo's pizza place is comfortable and I plan to return. Parking is easy. I don't count this against the restaurant, but the building's restroom is old and not clean feeling. It doesn't appear to have been upgraded since the days this location was a train station.

The gravy was alright, the biscuit was pretty typical. I enjoyed the sweet potato hash that I got with my omelette. The service was alright, but a bit slow. I realize they seemed to be slammed with at least one party waiting the entire time we were there. The idea that you are eating in the old train station is lost. It COULD be really cool, but dang. It's covered and filled with cheap tchotchkes, fake plants, and text/signs that aren't old, vintage, or even related to the train station itself. Of course it says eat, and all aboard, but come on. He asked if I wanted bread with my meal. I said "Sure". Well bread is $5. Not a big deal, but would be nice to mention or at least bring a nice warm bread? Neither happened! Bread was hard and cold. Menus still on the table. App one arrived, then app two arrived. Still no iced tea. Then he came around the corner after being absent for 10-15 min; app one was already finished. Then I caught him doing a 180 and then come back with my tea. At this point about 30 min since I sat down, he asked if I was ready to order. Really? I was done, asked for a refill on the tea and a check. He took the glass and came back with same glass refilled. Now maybe I am being picky here, but if you take the glass, then just bring a fresh one. Dont just top of the melted ice with tea. Old lemon wedged between the ice and new one on top. Overall: Place is busy. Food is ok, but they could do better!

I had a lot of folks recommend Yakima Steak, saw a few good reviews on TikTok, so I went, and…read moreunfortunately, I walked away wondering what all the fuss was about. (They must have paid for the good TikTok reviews.) Let's start with the service, or lack thereof. When I walked in, there were three people standing at the hostess stand, and not a single one acknowledged me. I actually had to say hello first. Now, I'm not expecting anybody to kiss my ass when I walk through the door, but when you're charging the prices this place charges, a simple greeting shouldn't be too much to ask. Since I was dining alone, I asked to sit at the bar but was told it was closed for an event. No problem. They ended up seating me in a corner by the stairs, even though there was an open table by the window. I ain't gonna lie, that rubbed me the wrong way a little bit. Looking around at the good ol' boys crowd, I couldn't help but wonder if my complexion had something to do with where they decided to put me. I'm not saying that's what happened, but the thought definitely crossed my mind. Maybe there was another reason, but the whole interaction just felt off. Anyway, let's talk about the food... I ordered off the happy hour menu because there's no way I was paying those steak prices, especially when the sides are à la carte. I mean, come on now. This is Yakima, not Vegas. Started with a glass of Pinot Gris, which was nice. The Caesar salad was actually pretty good too, although the dressing was a little heavy on the anchovies. I like a good Caesar, and I'm not gonna knock the whole salad over that. The potato cakes were probably the first thing that made me think we might be onto something. They were seasoned well, cooked nicely, and the sauce that came with them was REALLY good. No complaints there. The brisket sandwich, though? Just okay. The meat was a little dry, there wasn't nearly enough barbecue sauce, and the whole thing felt like somebody just threw it together. Nothing terrible, but nothing I'd order again either. Now, the lumpia.....That's right lumpia in Yakima... Man, what the hell was going on with those things? Three of the five had clearly exploded in the fryer, and it looked like somebody just flipped them over so the busted, burnt sides wouldn't be showing...bush league, should have never served those. The filling was sparse, and the seasoning was practically nonexistent. I mean, absolutely NO flavor. I've got Filipino family, and I can only imagine what they'd have to say if somebody put those in front of them. Lumpia is supposed to be flavorful, crispy and packed with a well-seasoned filling. These tasted like somebody forgot half the ingredients. Easily the worst thing I ate that night. Thankfully, dessert came through. I ordered the lemon blueberry cream cake, and THAT was fantastic. Easily the best thing I had the entire meal. Great flavor, nice balance of sweet and tart, and honestly, I would've been happier just having the potato cakes and that cake for dinner. Here's my issue with Yakima Steak. When you're charging premium prices, the food and the experience need to reflect that. I shouldn't have to greet the staff first, wonder why I'm tucked away in a corner, or sit there looking at food that clearly shouldn't have left the kitchen. Maybe I caught them on an off night. It happens. But there were enough misses here that I can't just chalk the whole thing up to one bad dish. I actually filmed a video of my experience for TikTok, but I've decided not to post it. It wouldn't paint the restaurant in a particularly good light, and I'd rather share my experience here than put together a video dragging the place. At the end of the day, there were a couple of things I really enjoyed, but not nearly enough to make me want to come back. For what Yakima Steak is charging, I expected a whole lot better. Unfortunately, I didn't get it...
