The food was amazing! Please forgive the picture because I didn't realize I would want to take one till I had already chomped a big bite of my pulled pork sandwich with slaw added. But It was SO good! I had the hash brown casserole as my side and I was equally impressed with it! I most definitely will be back. They have coke products in the fountain machine (including cherry coke) and delicious fresh sweet tea. They also have a range of desserts and I couldn't pass up trying the cheese pie. This is one of the worst restaurants in Paducah. There is no consistency at all. Depending upon the moodiness of their surly cook, you might get a decent amount of food, or end up with a to go box of gristle, skin & bones. I ordered a deboned chicken for $12 & didn't have enough actual meat in the box to make 2 sandwiches at home. I opened my to go box in the car, walked it back in to the restaurant, & was told, "Yep! That's a full chicken!" Maybe a Cornish game hen! But if you are bored, stick around & watch several of the family members argue with each other in the evening, teenagers running in & out behind the counter, & eating food & grabbing pieces of meat & food from behind the cooks line. Moms argue with daughters & the sh**show begins. Save your money & wait until BANDANA'S BBQ opens here. Now there's a BBQ restaurant that's extremely consistent & has a huge following, with about 20 locations in MO, several in Illinois & a few in IN & IA. They actually have beef brisket, which Backwoods BBQ doesn't offer on their menu. Bandana's is excellent. I should have pulled up the reviews and avoided this place. Lady taking the order let me know their ribs constantly win awards in the region for being the best. Maybe this is because they don't venture out to any other competitions. The ribs were okay but nothing to brag about like she was. They make their own sauces but are only willing to give you one small container holding two tablespoons of runny sauce. Forget trying to sample them or have a variety. The vinegar based coleslaw should be thrown away and try should just buy a commercial made one as it would have to be better. Their baked beans are the commercial sized one gallon can type and they are adding a small 1/4 cup can of diced green chilies and just a little bit of brown sugar. So basically they have no baked bean taste. No onions, no bacon, no pieces of burnt ends. Just making them as cheaply as possible and hoping anyone who eats them will think it is better than hospital food. What a shame they seem to have no clue. read more

Wonderful customer service and delicious food. The chicken falls off the bone and the hot sauce is just right. Be sure to get the hash brown casserole! From 5 Stars down to 1 Star~ I have been visiting Backwoods BBQ every year since I can remember. The pulled pork used to be packed in Styrofoam containers and now is wrapped in paper. The pork is not as flavorful and is now abundantly salty. I also purchased a bottle of Backwoods Mild BBQ Sauce which is runny and tastes more of vinegar than anything else. I ordered 6 - 1lb packages and paid $11.99 per package. I also weighed each package and each 1lb package weight does not equate to 1lb of pulled pork. 1lb = 16oz. Please see photos for weight and note the packages are still sealed. I cannot express my disappointment with the changes Backwoods BBQ has made. I question whether there are new owners as I cannot fathom why Backwoods would change their BBQ quality and short-change customers on the 1lb weight paid. read more

Backwoods was suggested to us by a family member while we were in Paducah for Christmas and wanting some bbq. Their special was written in chalk behind the counter and it sounded good so we ordered it only to be told that was actually last weeks special. Since the special was apparently not available we ordered bbq sandwiches and sides instead. The sides tasted fine, but they weren't very large. Overall the food was good, but maybe slightly overpriced for the amount we received. It was almost $20 for 2 sandwiches, 2 sides and 2 drinks. read more

The only reason I go to Paducah Kentucky is to visit my 97 year old grandmother in the "Land of Lincoln" on the other side of the Ohio. But when I'm there I make my obligatory artery-clogging stop at the Backwoods BBQ. Located on the main strip of Paducah right next to Lowe's this is probably the only restaurant in the entire 50 mile radius that has genuinely great food. The competition in the area? Fazzoli's (cheap Italian fast food), Arby's, Subway, Wendy's-- you get the idea. The one thing about this area of the U.S. is that all of the food is extremely greasy and fattening. I couldn't find a health food store in the area, but there is a new gym there, which I worked out at for several weeks (and I really needed to because I ate A LOT of Backwoods BBQ). The baby back ribs are some of the best I've ever had. The baked beans and potato salad were decent, and the pork sandwich was truly the best ever with pork so tender it made me want to sit back in my booth and talk about bass fishin' and skinny dippin'. Also, the Southern hospitality is really genuine, and that's something us Coasters aren't used to. The prices are extremely affordable. I was able to purchase a meal for 5 for under $20 and there were plenty of left overs. Backwoods is a good place to dine (you can sit at the bar area, or grab a booth), but it also does catering, and I noticed it has very good carry out traffic. It's open every day and its employees are very accomodating. Next time you plan your big adventure to Paducah, hit the Backwoods. read more

All I can say is OH MY!!!! Fall off the bones ribs, amazing homemade sides and the desserts...WOW!!!! My husband and I both had the rib plate that came with two sides and a slice of bread. We both grabbed each bone slightly turned it and every single bone slid out with no meat attached, no mess, all meat and all delicious!! So after being on the road 15 hours, moving from South Florida to Colorado, we stopped overnight in Paducah. Asked where we could eat, and this place was mentioned. Also close to the hotel which was a bonus. I made a wrong turn and tuned just past the entrance to the restaurant...no side entrance. But something caught my eye. A man throwing wood into the pit. YES. A real pit. I parked around front and went to the back. Asked if I could take a photo. Ya see, my whole family has been in the BBQ world for many years. One son is a pitmaster and my husband judged and competed for many years. Chris and Aaron not only let me take pictures, they gave me a full tour of all the smokers. How cool is that?! Went inside to order. Got ribs for my husband, which had been recommended. I got the pulled pork, my favorite. Wasn't bothered by no beef on the menu as we aren't beef eaters. I was so excited. Asked for extra sauce, was told the sauce comes on the side, not on the meat. That's how it SHOULD be done. Sides were Cole slaw, potato salad and the hash brown casserole I saw raved about on Yelp. Took food back to our hotel. The good.... pork was very tender and had a decent smoke ring on it. My husband deemed the ribs tasty but overlooked. That had been our suspicion when we saw reviews saying the meat fell of the bone...sure sign they're overcooked. No sauce at all in my bag, never mind extra. The meat was good but I wanted it with sauce. Asked for a piece of bread, which was put in the box with the ribs....plain thin white bread. Soggy from the steam. Recommend you use Texas toast vs regular white bread. The hash brown casserole was indeed tasty. I expected more smoke flavor from the meat after seeing and smelling the cookers. We usually eat here about once a month and its great ..... but today i was very disappointed. Ordered the smoked chicken , which i normally get , and typically its so hot and fresh i have to let it cool before i can eat it . When my 1/2 smoked chicken arrived today , i noticed it wasnt piping hot so with fork in hand i dug in ............ to my dismay the chicken was luke warm on the outside and cool to cold in the middle ? Did you seriously re heat a chicken from yesterday and try to pass it off as fresh smoked chicken? Any smoked chicken eater can tell by the look of the skin if its a reheated chicken even if it were hot . I would have ordered a different dish had i known re heated cold chicken was my option? Hey, if you can put time in a bottle, you can surely ship real Kentucky bar-b-que in a cooler! (Don't call me "Surely" though.) My parents, who live in middle Tennessee, sent four pounds of Backwood's pulled pork bar-b-que to my hubs and me all the way out here in Los Angeles. It arrived on the second day via Fed-Ex, in a styrofoam cooler which was wrapped in paper inside the box. Yum! It arrived fresh, tender, smoky, and delicious! The occasion was the Titans' recent playoffs loss to the Ravens. My husband's from Baltimore, and we lived there for several years, so there's this ongoing rivalry. A Titans victory would've won my folks a bushel of crabs. Having grown up in Tennessee and having lived the last three years in Texas, I claim to know good bar-b-que from the fair to middlin' kind, and Backwoods bbq -- despite the logistical disadvantage noted above -- held up very well to that of my favorite places: Bobby Q.'s in Cookeville, TN, Rib N Loin (499-OINK) in Chattanooga, Ironworks (for beef ribs) and Green Mesquite (for beef brisket) in Austin, TX , and The Salt Lick just outside Austin. As a BBQ lover I was highly disappointed at our experience here. Even though the place was not to close for another hour when we walked in we were treated as if we popped in 5 minutes before closing. The waitress was nice but she seemed distracted, even though there were only two other people in the restaurant. The food----ugh! My pork sandwich was a sad excuse for pulled pork, the BBQ I tried to salvage the pork with actually made it worst. The worst part of it all was my son ordered a hot dog and when it came out it was GREEN. Not just a little tinge of green like it sat a little too long, like GREEN as if they made it at 9am the previous day and it sat in lukewarm water for 2 days. To give them the benefit of doubt I tasted it and it was absolutely repulsive. When I presented my concern to the waitress she said "we just made it FRESH" No mam', there is no way this GREEN hot dog is fresh. I think we then ordered him a grilled cheese instead and nothing else was said about the disgusting hot dog. No apology, just a said excuse that it WAS fresh. Never ever again. read more

So I'm not a ribs fan or even a bbq fan. But my cousin came up from Wisconsin and is a huge bbq lover. We moved to paducha from chicago at the height of Covid so for a year and a half we pretty much lived in lock down. The first sit down restaurant we went to was backwoods. We were all game to give it a go!?! Ok so it really looks like a small place but is much bigger on the inside and kinda cute. I'm not personally crazy about how you order and pay but I'm lazy that way. I just had a plain pulled pork sandwich on wonder bread. I was kinda hoping for home baked fancy bread but I get it!?! My husband ordered the ribs and he was slightly disappointed. The meat was firm aka not falling off the bone and very dry(maybe on that day over smoked or cooked too long) he wasn't crazy about the vinegar sauce, he said just a pinch more of brown sugar would have ticked his sauce box. My cousin and her husband loved their meal. We were going to take either a pie home or at least a slice but everyone was on order for customers. We had a little dust up leaving. There was a large order going out when we got there so we had to wait a few minutes but not bad. The bbq nachos where not good at all. The whole place smells wonderful and when I walked in the person in front of me ordered 35 LBS of pork with sauce, SO, that must be good! The place was clean and neat. When I opened the door I was greeted by the wonderful smell of smoking meat! I ordered a rib plate and got a pulled pork sandwich on the side. After 14 hours of driving from FL to KY, and a couple of hours of sleep in the hotel, we decided to venture out for lunch in Paducah, KY (10/24/2008). After consulting the local Yellow Pages, we decided to hit Backwoods BBQ for some carry-out. Two pulled pork sammiches, a double order of baked beans and a double order of hashbrown casserole. All totalled it was about $10 for lunch which isn't bad. The hashbrowns were pretty good. The baked beans had green pepper in them and a bit too much. When you can taste pepper more than bbq or beans or even bacon grease that's in there, that's not good. The sammiches were, as Michael said, uninspired. The pork was a bit dry and even after adding some sauce, it was still pretty dry. We asked for the buns (over the toasted bread) and it was like they warmed them and then smashed them down on the pork. For as much raving about Sonny's I did previously on this trip, the opposite will happen for Backwoods. Sorry, it seemed to be popular with the locals, but I've had much better BBQ. read more

We stopped here while traveling to get sandwiches. I had the BBQ Pork sandwich on toast with cole slaw. It was perfect! They don't smother the meat in sauce so you can actually taste the pork! I also had the hash brown casserole as a side -- delicious! My husband had the pulled pork sandwich on a bun with BBQ chips (package -- they didn't make them). There are a couple of good BBQ places in Paducah, but this one is my favorite because of the quality of the food, and the menu selection.
