We were playing tourist at Broadway with a bachelor group of five when someone suggested an escape room as we walked by. I went in to inquire about available times and we lucked out. They had an opening but it was in 7 minutes. Luckily I wrangled the troops and we got checked in right away. One of the best escape rooms I had ever done was with this same group of guys so we already had experience together. I won't give anything away but I will say the room we did was very elaborate and definitely had us thinking outside the box. One thing that was different was that sometimes instead of a physical key or combo to get to the next clue, it might be an action or something not so definitive to move forward in the game. It was cool in a way, but once we wasted time because the game master said we did it wrong and we actually had it right the first go around. By the end, we finally figured it out and made it under the allotted time. As we were exiting our guide let us know that we actually had one second left on the clock. Talk about a buzzer beater! At the end they don't do a photo which I thought was odd because every other one I went to they did, but the guys snapped a pic for us anyway. read more

We did the Haunting of Hyde House and Atlantis. We are avid escape room players. I'll give notes on the rooms individually below. TLDR: Backstage is a below average escape game experience, especially considering the price of tickets. If you still want to try a room I would recommend Atlantis over Haunting of Hyde House. Haunting of Hyde House (1/5) - The visual design and ambiance of the rooms appropriately capture a haunted house. - The room is poorly lit and the game master did not provide is with a flash light or a wipe board for notes. - Some puzzles require the players have prior knowledge from outside of the game. - A critical prop was broken and the game master did not inform us for 5 minutes. - One prop can create a trip hazard and another could possibly cause head injuries. - The game master was too quick to give unsolicited clues. - One prop took up half a room and could not be interacted with. Atlantis (3/5) - The visual appeal and ambiance of the room makes you feel like you're exploring an ancient ruin. - The room is poorly lit but our party was provided a single flash light and an index card for notes. - The blue ambient lighting distorts the colors of a puzzle requiring color matching. - One puzzle did not provide enough visual output to suggest it was being done correctly. - One critical magnet related puzzle was not functioning properly and need game master assistance. read more

We did the Atlanticus one yesterday while we were visiting Broadway at the Beach. It was just the four of us, and we had a lot of fun. There was one technical malfunction, but other than that it went smoothly. We didn't escape, but we only lacked a couple of steps to finding the last crystal. The staff was very friendly and welcoming. It was expensive though, as most escape games are. We paid for both the escape game and the mirror maze in the same building. We are avid escape room enthusiasts and were going to be in town for the weekend, so we booked one over the phone (Online) with the help of the front desk. We showed up on the night of the booking excited to get started and then realized we would be sharing the experience with another family. We kindly asked if we could switch to another time and would gladly pay the difference. I'm assuming the manager come out to help (she never introduced herself) and kept saying "You booked yourself, I'm going to lose this money." She repeated this statement multiple times. We didn't want a refund, just wanted to book privately and would gladly pay the difference. We explained we booked over the phone and were not aware that we had to book privately, but would gladly pay more. She kept repeating how "They will lose money." we responded with "We will also lose money since you don't refund, we just want to book a room privately." We finally were able to book for an hour after our scheduled time and proceeded to our escape room. The room was challenging and we enjoyed it. It would be best if the guide provided you with insight into the game instead of reading a pamphlet beforehand. It makes the experience more personal. Will not book here again based on the service alone. Will not recommend and solely provided two stars based on the room experience. read more

On our family's 7th annual Myrtle Beach trip, the group of 8 cousins decided to explore a different escape room this year. We saw the amazing reviews for Atlantis, and Backstage as a whole, and were so excited to take this difficult room on. Unfortunately, immediately upon arrival we felt unwelcomed and a burden to the staff working there. We were hardly greeted, only spoken to where the bare minimum was needed, and made to feel a burden when we responded "no" to the female "game masters" dry question of "do you know your mission". When we finally asked for our first clue well into the room, it took multiple attempts to have anyone even respond. Once we got a response, the male staff refused to provide any sort of helpful clue. This back and forth lasted a minimum of 5 min and was extremely frustrating because it preventing us from successfully moving forward at the end of the room. I can only assume our game was not being monitored, as it should be so the game master can do their job correctly. Finally, once the game ended it came to light that one of the crystals was never even placed back correctly from the previous room. This point was the most engagement we received from the female staff, who appeared she only wanted to prove us wrong. Whether we escaped or not, our entire experience was ruined due to the so called "game masters". We had multiple experienced escape room players in our group, and have never had such a disheartening experience. The game and puzzles were fantastic, and we were really looking forward to doing their other rooms in our future family trips but will not be returning to Backstage. read more

I took my family and friends here. We did 2 of their escape rooms, the 'haunted house' and 'help save Christmas'. The haunted house was with the older kids, 12-14 yr olds w/ adults, the Christmas one was for 8-11 yr old w/ Adults. They say the haunted house has a 15% success rate and The Christmas one has a 28% success rate. The older kids almost finished it, a their RFID scanner was not reading the proper sequence for them, so if it read it properly, they would have finished just in time. Impressive. The younger kids also almost finished but one of the girls had to go to the bathroom so a NL Adult left with her, so they missed the last few mins w/ their input, otherwise they probably would have finished. The employees gave helpful and timely hints. If you are at Broadway at the Beach, I'd say give this place a try. I was Impressed with our kids and the staff!l working here. read more

A companion and I did the Atlantis escape room, and were grouped with a family of 4 (this was pre-pandemic). We didn't mind this as we've done escape rooms with strangers before. They had the option to reserve the entire room for a private experience, which costed the same as having a full room of participants. Both my companion and I had done several escape rooms before, including a few with each other. We liked that the puzzles were a range of solving complexity, but ultimately with a group of 6 felt that it was a bit crowded and harder to feel like we were progressing. Since the puzzles were mostly sequential, there wasn't much to do while other people were tackling the only puzzle currently accessible. We liked that there was a good mix of physical and written/text-based puzzles, with some creative designs that were fun but not significantly different from other common patterns in escape rooms. If you've done other escape rooms in the past you'll still have fun, but the puzzles are not especially challenging or unique. I would recommend doing this with no more than 4 or 5 people total - and it's always preferable to do escape rooms with people you know for easier communication. read more

Our group of 6 went here on Saturday. We paid 38 a person. We had an hour long to solve the puzzles. This was my first time doing an escape room. This one was haunted theme. I did enjoy it but I honestly didn't feel like it was worth 38 a person but they had really good puzzles. We have escape rooms back in Charlotte, according to my boyfriend (who does them) the rooms are bigger for around the same price but he said the props in this one were better. If you like solving puzzles, I would definitely try an escape room at least once. It is a good bonding experience for everyone involved. We booked a party for 11 people. We spent over $500 dollars to book 2 private rooms. One room we booked was Atlantis. The Atlantis group had the time of their life. The game master was amazing, helpful, sweet and led a great game. The other group had the Darkest Night room. As they were getting hints, the game master had the mic left unmuted and they heard comments like "man they are so stupid". This was through out the last half of the game. I have NEVER seen this behavior or treatment in an escape room ever before. I confronted the General Manager, who was the one who led this game. She denied it all. Blamed it on the cross chatter from the maze, and the boardwalk. Little does she know, she admitted there was only two people in the control room and the only two rooms in progress were filled with our family members who were able attest to what they heard. The one room heard the "stupid" comments while the other room did not telling us that it was that one game master and not the background noise. If it was background noise, both games would have heard these comments. Bottom line: Great Environment, Great Games, Pour Management who calls their patrons stupid. If you like getting belittled and spit on while you play an escape room...you should try this out, it definitely spiced our vacation up. read more

The decor makes you really get into the game. It wasn't just one room , you had hidden rooms get revealed and had to go between all of them. I did an escape room in Maryland recently it was ok. We really enjoyed the "Dark Winter's Night" escape room here. They are a bit pricier than some other rooms in town, but the game master was very attentive and helped us all have a great time. We were traveling with our young children (1 and 10) so we need to check with escape rooms to see if they can/ will accommodate the little one. They were great about it, let us walk right in to one of the rooms and get started. The only downfall- there were a few things broken in the room. IE- we had to have a metal connection at a certain point and they told my husband to use his wedding ring as the connection. Also, when we "escaped" and finished all the puzzles, the room didn't react like it was supposed to. That was disappointing. All in all, a great experience. read more

One of my favorite escape rooms so far! Only because this was the only one I haven't been able to crack thus far and I've done a few of them! I love how this one has multiple rooms rather than just being trapped in one. So essentially you're escaping the building rather than an expected room. The puzzles were quite challenging! My friends and I were stumped in one of the rooms for a while because it was so tricky. We were so close into making it but sadly was a few minutes shy. This was a blast! We only had four people which was a little on the small side for the Atlantis room, but we almost beat the room! This escape room does a great job with having just enough clues to keep you on your toes without being overwhelming. The staff were all super friendly and helpful. The rooms were clean and well thought out. This was a great rainy day activity and did not feel like an hour!!! It would have been better if we had 6 or so people because at the end there are some clues where it really helps to divide and conquer. It is on the pricey side, but on par with a good escape room and on par with other area entertainment. Not overpriced for what you get. I definitely recommend checking this place out. Parking is easy too compared to other attractions at Broadway (just park on the Landry's side). The Atlantis room was so much fun! Wish we had beat the room!! read more

We were lucky enough to walk right in and have the room to ourselves (one of the perks of going to the beach in December, haha). We did the save Christmas theme room and it was really fun. Enough plot twists that made the time go really quickly! The room was themed very well. The attendant only chimed in if we got close and frustrated, I'm sure they have an absolute blast watching the guests interact. We managed to save Christmas with only three of us and a few minutes to spare on the clock. I feel like we would definitely return next time in MB! read more

Great theming and design is the best I've seen of the rooms we've done! However, several items needed to be take along for the ride and it was difficult to know what to take and what to leave. Several keys at the beginning, more than one was broken and fit poorly into locks. A friend and I stopped by this at Broadway the other night and decided that we should give it a try. So, we reserved a spot for the next day at noon. I was a bit sceptical of the price at first, but once we began I had a blast. We were a bit small as a group,( I feel as though it is designed for 4 or more, and there were only two of us) but the puzzles were challenging and fun. The story is deep enough for you to care why you're there, yet simple enough that anyone at any age could follow along and enjoy. We didn't end up finishing, but it was a ton of fun, and the staff were absolutely amazing. I've been to almost all of the tourist attractions in Myrtle Beach and the surrounding areas, and considering that most of them have a 25-30 price tag on them, Backstage Escape Room is definitely among the very best Myrtle Beach has to offer!!! 11/10 read more

The rooms are so difficult that it makes them unenjoyable. We did the Atlantis room (which was so hard, Sherlock Holmes couldnt solve it), and was literally almost out except for one last clue to solve. Our time ran out. These escape rooms are by far the best ones we have ever done....challenging to the point of frustrating but the room monitor gives you just enough to figure it out if he sees you're stuck and then you're flying again....would say a bit too challenging for anyone under 14 yrs old...and it has some great technology unlike your standard rooms which are typically all numbers and combination locks....a great way to kill an hour and meet other tourists doing the same.... read more

This was our first time doing one of these and we LOVED the experience! Ages for the seven of us ranged from 17-43. It was not easy but the assistants were there to guide us when needed without just giving us the answer and we made it out with seconds to spare. My friends and I had a really good time. It was all of our friar time doing an escape room so we didn't know too much about what to expect. It exceeded our expectations and we will definitely be checking out other escape rooms back in Maryland, where we are from, because of our experience. The only reason I didn't give a 5 star is because the staff in the beginning where you buy tickets were not that friendly and seemed like they didn't want to be there. We had a blast. A friend and I were looking for something to do on a rainy day in Myrtle Beach. As I had already done an escape room game before in Maryland the concept wasn't new to me but it was everyone else's first time. Our group of 8 included 2 kids around the ages of 10-12 and we were able to easily include them in the tasks. This escape game is one of the few that have several rooms that are connected to each other and I really liked that. Usually there's only one room to work in. We were pretty impressed by the setup and interior decorations and how the riddles were all connected to each other. It kept us on our toes and the hour flew by. Whenever the game maker who was watching us felt like we were stuck in a way that wouldn't let us finish on time she nudged us in the right direction because as she said they "want us to see every room in order to have the best experience". We ended up not finishing but only by like 1 or 2 minutes. But it was still fun and so worth the cost. Loved this, thanks for having us! read more

I would not recommend going with young kids. We had a group of 11. Reserved ahead of time over the phone with a nice female and paid for 8 (as the rest were young children and we were told they would be free). When we arrived we were told again that the young children were free by a female staff member. Once entering the room, a male staff member told us over the intercom that upon completion we were to return to the front office and pay for the young children. We told him that we already reserved/paid over the phone and were told both on the phone and when we arrived that as long as we had/paid for a party of 8, we would not have to pay for the young ones. He said we were not informed that (in essence calling us liars) and must pay. I think this is what upset me that most. He easily could've said we were misinformed but instead made us look like liars. If we were lying then obviously we would have been made to pay for them before we started. Keep in mind these kids were so young they could not read and played with a box of jewels nearly the entire hour. Upon completion of the escape room, the female manager met us immediately at the door and said she had new staff that was unaware that all children cost $36, but still required us to pay for another ticket. I understand that we may have been misinformed, but had we had been informed of this prior to, we would have chosen one of the other multiple escape rooms available that did not charge for children 12 and under (6 of our party of 11 were ages 12 and under). We did the Atlantis room and did not complete it in time. I would not recommend this for anyone with children. You can find it much much cheaper at other escape rooms with staff that is more respectful and family friendly. read more
