We literally stumbled across this place by accident after having lunch at Beyond Bread at their east side location. Despite its small size, the shop carries a wide variety of 5" pies. The smaller size makes them perfect for grabbing a couple to take home and sample (with reasonably sized slices) without feeling too gluttonous or having to commit to an entire pie. They are also reasonably priced - most of them ran around $5-$6. Our two pies set us back about $11.50. They all looked looked lovely, but we chose to try the key lime and the lemon meringue. The key lime was good, though the graham cracker crust could have been packed down firmer (the slices did not hold together at all). But the lemon meringue was excellent, the lemon filling being a creamy combination of sweet and tart, and a nice fluffy meringue on top. We kept our tins (you get a free pie if you bring in 10 of them) and will definitely be back to try them out again, and maybe give their turkey pot pies a chance as well. read more

Called a few days prior to reserve a key lime pie and a strawberry-rhubarb pie and was told they generally only reserve pies when 6 or more are ordered - however, they made an exception for me since I was coming from out of town. The key lime pie was nice and tart with just the right amount of sweetness - the tartness grabs you and the sweetness settles the punch! The strawberry-rhubarb pie was sweet and filled with a lot of rhubarb, which I rarely find. The crust was perfectly golden and flaky. I purchased the Kahlua cheese cake and the strawberry margarita pie and was not disappointed. Beyond Bread in the Monterey Village at Wilmont and Speedway just opened take-out only store just behind the Beyond Bread store. They have a collection of different "pies" for purchase. These pies are just over 5 1/2". They have an assortment of cream and fruit pies. In addition they have a couple of pot pies (chicken and turkey). My dad was in rehab recently so my mom and I picked up a couple of desert pies and a pot pie. Dad loved the coconut cream pie, we shared it. I put the chicken pot pie in the refrigerator and heated it up the next night in the oven. It was very good. The crust was still flaky and rich. It had plenty of crust on the top, sides, and base. The "guts" were amazing too. I will definitely be heading back for more of that tasty treat. My favorite pie is strawberry pie. Of course it is only available seasonally. Luckily it was the season. The berries were large and firm. The strawberry glaze was sweet but not too sweet. The cashier also told me about a discount policy. If you bring back 10 of the pie tins, you get a discount/free pie (not sure which). Regardless, I am sure that I will easily fulfill that quota. The only negative is the hours, they are only open 8-4 daily. So if you want something for dinner you going to have to plan ahead and pick your choices up early. A small price to pay for such amazing pies. It has been a week or so, but I think the pies were in the 6-8 dollar range. Not too bad. I ate on the Strawberry pie for 3-4 nights. read more

The basics: The business location was decent and from the looks of the inside, it looks clean. The staff were also friendly. The order: Turkey, Chicken, and Steak Pot Pies. Strawberry, Rhubarb, and Lemon Meringue Pies. Mocha or Espresso with Chocolate Cheesecake Pie. ALL DELICIOUS!!! The lemon meringue was a tad too lemony tart, but pretty good. All pies had a great crust... The steak pot pie was too peppery for our taste, but also tasty (But we absolutely loved the turkey pot pie the best - oh so tasty!) The pot pie crust were flaky and yummy... The cheesecake's espresso/mocha crust was to die for! No complaints whatsoever and will be back for more when in the area! FYI - We have been here in the Tucson area since March and should be leaving soon. Since our stay, we have mostly been sheltering in place, but on occasion do place orders for pick up or to go. What a hidden gem! My husband and I are pieaholics and I love to bake pies as well, but after finding Back Dough we are hooked. So far each dessert flavor has been great and have tried the chicken pot pies. Now a staple each week for a quick and delicious meal. Wow. An amazing local find here in Tucson! There is a huge variety of all sorts of wonderful pies--not too big so that you can sample/try some/etc. Towards the end of the day, they run out of a number of them, but still a good number to choose from. I tried the sour cream blueberry and it was amazing--very generous for the price, too. It's one of those places that gives Tucson its really authentic, local charm and I'm sure this won't be my last visit out there--definitely a must try dessert spot! read more

I visited the Back Dough on lunch and found that they had most of their selection available. I purchased the chicken pot pie and key lime pie to try at home. They add a label to the pot pie with preparation instructions. I'm from out of town and could only microwave my pot pie in my hotel room so I can't comment on how crispy the crust would be coming out of an oven. What I can tell you was that the pot pie was delicious and still maintained it's flakiness even coming out of the microwave. You could taste the butter in the dough and the filling was excellent. The key lime pie was fantastic as well with a great tartness that didn't pucker your mouth too much. I like how there's a wide variety of pies to choose from here. But I was surprised the first time I came in at how they are all smaller than normal pies. Tip: just go inside of Beyond Bread and follow the pie signs. The pies are delicious! The crust is great and the fillings even more so. That sour cream apple pie is an absolute must! We tried a savory pie. I'm usually not a fan of pot pies (I think the fillings look like throw-up) but these are pretty yummy! These come with heating instructions too (oven or microwave) so you can enjoy a nice warm meal. Another tip: Remove pie from foil tin if you are going the microwave route. I hadn't noticed Back Dough before, but recently drove past their sandwich board sign next to the curb on Wilmot and decided to look it up online. The rave reviews sealed the deal... I had to go in and check it out! I went in and got some of the Chicken Pot Pies for dinner (with a super cute saguaro cut-out/accent on the top of the crust!), as well as the Strawberry Margarita pie, and the Chocolate Peanut Butter pie for dessert. Chicken Pot Pie: Two thumbs up! The crust was particularly impressive, in my opinion. Flaky, tender, and buttery. The filling had plenty of chicken (white meat), which I appreciated. Everything had a good flavor. Each pie also came with a full sized cornbread muffin! $5.99 is a steal! Overall, we gave them 8/10. Strawberry Margarita: This is a Key Lime pie with a layer of strawberries + glaze on top. It was my choice for "something different", and well received. The base had a nice bite, and the strawberry topping blended nicely. The graham cracker crust was nothing super special, but good. Overall, we gave it 7/10. Chocolate Peanut Butter: Again, the crust was nice. It was not too dry, and had a real buttery flavor (not fake/chemical buttery flavor). This pie is a layer of chocolate silk with a layer of peanut butter, er, silk? On top. Plus whipped cream garnished with chocolate sprinkles and chopped peanuts. The gal behind the counter told me that their peanut butter silk/cream layer is made with chunky peanut butter, and I really liked that! This is NOT an overly sweet pie like some versions of the chocolate+PB combo I've tried in the past. It definitely tastes homemade vs. commercially overly sweet/HFCS-y. I appreciated that a lot! Overall, we gave this one 7/10 again. I, too, was told about their program offering a free pie when you bring back 10 of their pie tins to recycle. I think it will be an easy mark to hit, because I can't wait to go back and try some more flavors! Edit: I've been back several times, and have to add that their Ham and Spinach quiches are DELICIOUS! Easily one of the top 3 quiches I've ever had. I passed by this place several times before I decided to give it a try--boy, am i glad that I did. While I wanted to take home every pie in the display case, I ended up getting the fresh strawberry and the sour cream blueberry pies. OMG!!! Soooo, tasty!!! They were both utterly delicious and the pie crust (a pie make-it-or-break-it for me) was very good. Each pie could easily satisfy three people and the price is quite reasonable. My only regret is that it is so far from my house, but that just makes me anticipate my next trip out here all the more. I'm already looking forward to taking home their Boston cream pie. read more

Great option for a quick dessert but wouldn't be my first choice. Their crust is often a bit underdone and their lemon curd tastes like soap. I adore lemon curd so this was a real disappointment as I tried two different lemon pies on two separate occasions which leads me to believe that's just how they make it. The chocolate cream wasn't even chocolatey enough for my 4 year old who thought it tasted funny. The blueberry sour cream was pretty good and the fresh strawberry was a pleasant surprise. Buyer beware. I bought 3 chocolate pies for a small party. Only after one of the guests eating the pie did we discover that nuts were contained in it. Luckily our one guest who is allergic was not the one that tasted the pie. There is no sign, no vocal warning that nuts were in the pie. When I called the shop to register my concern, I was breezily informed that most of their pies contain nuts, and it was up to the customer to inquire . Lemon meringue, blueberry, strawberry,and more....according to the unfeeling clerk, they would all have nuts, and its tough luck if you don't ask. To me, Beyond Bread and its affiliate, Back Dough, have a responsibility to inform people that they could possibly go in anaphylactic shock when they eat their pies that normally would not have nuts in them. How socially responsible is that? Do you really want to spend your money in a place that doesnt care whether you end up in the hospital, or worse, after consuming their product? read more
